‘WWE RAW’ 12/16/13 Results + Notes – Bryan Vs. Orton, Shawn Michaels Confronts CM Punk, Brodus Clay Done Being Funky

WWE RAW logo

Venue: American Airlines Center (Dallas, TX)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

One night removed from unifying the World Titles, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton saw non-title action in the main event of this week’s RAW against arguably his biggest rival Daniel BryanShawn Michaels also made a surprise appearance to jaw with CM PunkBrodus Clay finally had enough of Tons of Funk, and the WWE Tag Team Champions lost another non-title match.

Read on for results and notes from the show. I was at the show live but didn’t keep match times.

Match Results

1. Non-Title Match: Rey Mysterio & The Big Show defeated *WWE Tag Team Champions* Cody Rhodes & Goldust when Mysterio pinned Goldust.

  • Notes: Mysterio & Show were voted by the WWE Universe to face Rhodes & Goldust on WWE.com.

2. Dolph Ziggler defeated Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] via pinfall with an inside cradle.

3. *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Mark Henry defeated The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter] when Langston pinned Cesaro with the BIG ENDING.

  • Live Notes: The TX crowd ragged on Swagger the entire night for his OU background and he played to that heat beautifully. Henry also joined in, using the Longhorn hand gesture to get the crowd even more on his side.

4. Ryback & Curtis Axel defeated Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] when Ryback pinned Tensai with SHELL SHOCK.

  • Post-Match: Clay splashed Tensai repeatedly until R-Truth and Xavier Woods (who were on commentary for the match) intervened. Clay walked off and spouted off once more about being a main event player. Truth invited The Funkadactyls to come dance with he and Woods and that they did…while Tensai was still motionless from being splashed.

5. The Shield (*WWE United States Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns) defeated CM Punk & The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) when Reigns pinned Punk with a SPEAR.

  • Note: The Usos were voted in as Punk’s partners via the WWE App.
  • Live Notes: Punk was awesome throughout the match, totally getting into the Usos chants and playing the cheerleader babyface role better than I expected him to. He appeared to be actually enjoying himself which was a nice change of pace.

6. *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee, Tamina Snuka, Alicia Fox defeated Natalya The Bella Twins (Nikki & Brie Bella) when Lee pinned Nikki Bella following a running knee.

  • Notes: Nikki Bella covered her face for the remainder of the match following a stiff superkick from Snuka, signaling she either broke her nose or lost some teeth during that exchange.

7. Non-Title Match: Daniel Bryan defeated *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton via DQ when Orton caught Bryan with a low-blow.

  • Live Notes: Orton started bleeding early in the match and was patched up by the ringside doctor during what I assume was the commercial. The crowd was absolutely insane for this match throughout, louder than for anything else during the show.
  • Post-Match: John Cena came out after the match and laid into Orton, but was caught with an RKO when he went to check on Bryan after. Orton posed with both belts to end the episode.
  • Off-Air: John Cena beat Randy Orton via DQ in a dark match with special guest referee Booker T. Cena then hit Orton with an Attitude Adjustement and Booker T did a Spinerooni to send the fans home happy.

Important Segments

-The episode opened with the entire WWE roster (including The Wyatts!) on the stage. Triple H & Stephanie McMahon made their way out and introduced new WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton to the ring. Orton cut a celebratory promo then was cut off by John Cena who apparently had a mic. Cena told Orton to put up or shut up and to wrestle Daniel Bryan (which the Dallas crowd was all for). Orton didn’t want to but Triple H & Stephanie signed the match anyway much to his chagrin. It eventually was shown to be non-title but that wasn’t known at the time by anyone in the arena until the graphic showed on the TitanTron later on.

CM Punk cut a celebratory promo about The Shield then once again accused The Authority of wanting to punish him for his comments made towards Triple H. He invited Trips to come out and discuss this but instead out came Shawn Michaels to a loud ovation. The cheers quickly turned into a “YOU SOLD OUT!” chant which Michaels brilliantly mocked the crowd about when they couldn’t keep it up. Michaels then brought up the fact he was the one who superkicked Punk last week and Punk said he would let that slide out of respect but if it happens again he’s going to kick back. Michaels then segued into The Shield making their way out for the six man tag team match.

Bray Wyatt cut an ominous promo on the TitanTron to “Sister Abigail” (his empty rocking chair), calling Daniel Bryan a coward and saying he thought he could save him. Luke Harper then piped in saying that Bryan would burn with the saints, teasing more attacks in the future.

-WWE Signature/Main Event Intro-

—–

Josh Matthews welcomes the home audience as we get a look at ringside, where there are tables, ladders, and chairs placed all around (including down the aisle and on the entrance stage). The WWE/World Heavyweight Championships are hanging above the ring. Dolph Ziggler makes his way out for the first match. Matthews hypes Ziggler’s kickoff match against Fandango on Sunday. Matthews introduces his broadcast colleague The Miz and hypes that he’ll be on the All-Star PPV panel. Ziggler’s opponent, Curtis Axel, makes his way out second joined by tag team partner Ryback. Axel is wearing his brand-new T-shirt. Glad he sold at least one.

—–

Match #1: Dolph Ziggler Vs. Curtis Axel [w/ Ryback]

Ziggler and Axel jockey for position around the ring, entangled in a lockup. Ziggler backs Axel into the ropes and breaks clean. Axel and Ziggler trade wristlocks, with the former winning and sending Ziggler to the mat with a hammerlock. Ziggler gets to his feet and reverses into a hammerlock before transitioning quickly into a side headlock. Axel breaks out and applies a side headlock of his own. Ziggler whips him into the ropes but is felled by a shoulderblock. Both men leapfrog one another then Axel connects with a dropkick. Axel celebrates the move while Ziggler stares daggers at him while on one knee. Axel grabs another side headlock, dropping to one knee to increase the pressure. Ziggler whips him off into the ropes and hits a hip toss after having his initial attempt blocked. Ziggler follows up with a drop toehold then applies a front facelock/chancery. Ziggler turns it into a neckbreaker then connects with his 10 elbowdrops of doom. He hits them away from the heart so he doesn’t accidentally almost kill someone this time. Ziggler goes for the cover but only gets 2.

Axel gets a kick to the midsection and clubs him down to the mat. Axel whips Ziggler in the ropes but eats a boot for his troubles. Ziggler ducks a clothesline and hits a running one of his own. Ziggler attempts the Zig Zag but Axel blocks it so he hits a dropkick instead. Ziggler goes for the Stinger Splash but Axel dodges and Ziggler hits the turnbuckles, crashing over the top and onto the floor. Axel has control as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Axel has Ziggler in a sort-of crossface (arm not grapevined) in the center of the ring as we return from commercial. Matthews hypes the Unification match for Sunday as Ziggler breaks out of the hold. Ziggler goes for a follw up but runs right into a sidewalk backbreaker and Axel covers for 2. Axel chokes Ziggler on the bottom rope then jaws at the crowd for a second before getting back to business. Axel sccop slams Ziggler down to the mat then heads to the second rope. Ziggler drops the flying forearm and covers once again for the 1…2…kickout. Axel arrogantly kicks at the fallen Ziggler, prompting him to fight back with a series of right hands. Ziggler, however, then runs into a knee to the midsection and Axel covers once again for the 1…2…kickout.

Axel rubs his forearm across Ziggler’s cheek then reapplies the crossface chinlock. Ziggler gets to his feet and busts out with a jawbreaker (more like a seated Ace Crusher) and connects with an inside out slam as a follow-up. Both men are down. Ziggler splashes Axel in the corner and follows up with the rapid-fire rights in the corner mount and the neckbreaker for the 1…2…kickout. Ziggler ducks a short-arm clothesline but Axel then hits him with it from behind and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Axel immediately peppers Ziggler with a series of rights as Ryback claps in approval. RybAxel RULES. Ziggler escapes a slam attempt and applies the backpack sleeper. Miz says he has beaten many people with said sleeper which is a flat-out lie.

Axel backs Ziggler in the corner to break the hold but misses the corner splash, hitting the ring post with his shoulder. Ziggler follows up with the Fameasser and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Ziggler heads to the top but Axel crotches him on the strut. Axel hits him with a Perfect Plex out of the corner for the 1…2…KICKOUT. Nice. Axel goes for the running neckbreaker but Ziggler mostly dodges it and plants Axel with the DDT for the 1…2…kickout. Ryback climbs to the apron and Ziggler knocks him off but this distraction is enough for Axel to hit him with a Hangman’s Facebuster for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Curtis Axel (14:26)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A solid match and much better than I was expecting. Good action and one of Axel’s better outings. I’m pretty sure it’s all downhill from here but I’ll try to stay positive.

RAW Recap (2 Weeks Ago): Kane puts CM Punk in a handicap match against The Shield to TLC.

RAW Recap (Last Monday): CM Punk wins “Extreme Moment of the Year” then hints at what he’s going to do The Shield on Sunday.

Natalya makes his way out for the next match. She’s in action next!

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

Natalya’s opponent, Alicia Fox, makes her way out as we return from commercial.

—–

Match #2: Natalya Vs. Alicia Fox

Natalya grabs a wristlock to start. Fox front flips out and reverses into one of her own. Natalya rolls through and sweeps the legs, grabbing a leglock into a cover for 1. Both women get to their feet and Natalya immediately takes her down with a side headlock. Fox whips Natalya into the ropes but gets taken down with a shoulderblock. Fox leapfrogs Natalya then takes her down with a headscissor. Natalya responds with an O’Connor roll for 2. Natalya grabs a waistlock when they both get back to their feet. Fox tries to break it but can’t so she grabs the top rope to force a break. Fox shoves her off, Natalya rolls back up and runs right into a big boot. Fox covers for 2 then tries again with the same result.

Fox applies a headscissor, increasing pressure by resting on her arms. Fox slams her back down to the mat. Natalya kicks out but Fox drags her back down to the mat by the hair. Fox connects with a Northern Lights suplex and bridges for 2, then goes back to the headscissor when the pinfall attempt fails. Natalya gets to her feet and picks Fox up. Fox escapes a move attempt and hits a back elbow. Natalya counters a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker into a lateral press for 2 then kicks Natalya into the corner after what looked like a strike botch (Fox covered it up well by posing and pretending that was her plan). Natalya all of a sudden mounts a comeback complete with a Michinoku driver and rolling clothesline for a 2-count.

Natalya grabs Fox’s head but gets a kick to the temple for her troubles. Fox dodges a corner splash and goes for a sunset flip but Natalya rolls through and applies the SHARPSHOOTER for the tapout victory.

Winner [via Submission]: Natalya (5:00)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Had some hiccups here and there but overall this wasn’t a bad match. Fox is a lot better than how she’s usually showcased and she had some good moves here. But since Natalya has the big Divas Championship match Sunday the finish was academic. Her Sharpshooter also looked less terrible than usual, so add that to the plus column.

-Commercial Break-

RAW Recap: The Championship Ascension Ceremony conclusion, including the Cena/Orton brawl, Daniel Bryan and CM Punk attacking Shawn Michaels and Triple H respectively, and Orton accidentally knocking Stephanie McMahon to the mat and eating a Pedigree for it.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Good end segment to Monday’s show. The best part, which featured the crowd torpedoing the beginning of the segment by nonstop cheering for D-Bry, was obviously cut out. It’s worth looking it up online though.

—–

TLC Hype Video: Cena Vs. Orton for the Unified WWE Championship

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Really good hype video that not only hyped the Unification match but also showcased their many title wins/accomplishments over the years. The Irish folk song was a weird soundtrack choice though; I mean it fit but it’s such a change from the usual “metalmetalmetal” stuff they use.

—–

After yet another shot of the two titles hanging in the air out come R-Truth and Xavier Woods for the next match, Truth rapping and Woods sort-of singing along. Woods rubs his ribs a bit to show he’s still feeling the effects from Monday’s attack but in all due honesty he looks pretty fine for a guy who got continually splashed by a man twice his size. Oh well. Tag team action next!

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

After some TLC 2013 hype for D-Bry Vs. The Wyatt Family we go back to the arena where Tons of Funk make their way out. Instead of doing the shoveling thing Brodus Clay just sort of dances in front of Tensai. Subtle but effective. We cut to clips of Clay squashing Woods in more ways than one on Monday.

—–

Match #3: R-Truth & Xavier Woods Vs. Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls]

Clay and Woods look to start, but Clay decides otherwise and tags Tensai in instead. Woods catches Tensai with a series of jabs but Tensai throws him into the corner. Woods hits more strikes but Tensai blocks the enziguri attempt. Woods escapes a slam attempt and connects with more jabs and kicks. Woods ducks back to back clotheslines and hits Tensai with a running one-foot dropkick. Woods gets sent to the apron and kicks Clay before catching Tensai with one as well. Woods flips over Tensai but runs right into a shoulderblock. Clay tags in and works over Woods in the corner. Clay puts Woods in a tree of woe and splashes him. Woods stands on Woods’ injured ribs with both feet before going back at it with some more strikes and an elbowdrop for a 1-count.

Clay continues to target Woods’ ribs, applying a claw to the hurt area. Clay connects with a delayed scoop slam then mocks Truth’s pelvic thrust taunt. Woods tries to fight back but Clay stops the momentum with a knee. Clay goes for a slam but Woods escapes and catches Clay with an enziguri. Truth gets the hot tag and hits Clay with a top rope missile dropkick. Truth hits a couple of rights and a dropkick right to the knee. Truth follows up with the scissor kick and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Clay bails to the outside and Tensai goes over to talk some sense into his partner. Truth takes the opportunity and hits them with a slingshot splash but they catch him so Woods hits a splash of his own and flattens all three men. Woods screams in approval as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Truth and Clay are going at it as we return from the break. Clay knocks Woods off the apron then launches Truth to the mat when he attempts a second-rope Tornado DDT. Clay walks over and connects with back to back legdrops. Tensai tags in and hits a butterfly suplex for a 2-count. Tensai applies a nerve hold to the shoulder to wear Truth down. Truth escapes and catches Tensai with a kick. Truth gets an elbow up during a corner splash attempt but Tensai catches him with a right immediately after. Tensai follows up with an elbowdrop for 2. Clay tags in and splashes Truth in the corner as Matthews/Miz try to retcon Triple H’s reaction to D-Bry’s popularity on Monday.

Clay continues the assault and hits a legdrop right to the midsection/sternum then covers for 2. Clay applies a nerve hold of his own to Truth. Truth escapes but gets sent hard into the corner. Clay climbs to the middle rope and hits a Banzai Drop for the 1…2…kickout. Clay applies a double nerve hold this time around. I don’t think Tons of Funk are used to wrestling this long. Truth escapes with a series of rights followed by a jumping heel kick and both men are now down. Woods gets the hot tag and dropkicks the knee of Clay followed by a kick and a DDT for 2. Woods hits Tensai then connects with the HONOR ROLL on Clay for the 1…2…kickout. Woods knocks Tensai off the apron but Clay regains the advantage in the ring. He sets up for a powerbomb but Woods escapes with right hands and Truth blind tags himself in. Clay hits Woods with a T-bone suplex and Truth immediately rolls Clay up after for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: R-Truth & Xavier Woods (12:51)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I did not expect this match to go that long but it’s nice to see a midcard tag team feud plus a slow-burn Brodus Clay heel turn. The match itself was a bit slow and featured too many “I have no idea what else to do” nerve hold rest moments, but I dug the finish as it was smart tag team wrestling on the part of R-Truth.

Post-Match: Brodus Clay attacks R-Truth and lays him out with a powerslam. Tensai yells at Clay and Clay shoves him as he heads to the second rope. Tensai stands in his way to prevent anything and they go head to head. Tensai shoves Clay and Clay leaves the ring. Clay yells for The Funkadactyls to come with him. They don’t seem to be into it. Clay leaves while yelling “MAIN EVENT PLAYER!” and Matthews hypes Smackdown before we cut to the next ION show.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: The impending Brodus Clay Vs. Tensai match is gonna be one hell of a HOSS FIGHT when it happens. I just hope they finally set the Clay heel turn firmly into motion sooner rather than later as this is something that doesn’t need to be dragged out.

*****

Overall Show Thoughts

  • A good episode of Main Event with two solid matches (Ziggler/Axel, Natalya/Fox) and the continuing development of the Tons of Funk breakup. This show is actually worth checking out if you have the time so make sure to do so both for the original content as well as the awesome Cena/Orton video package (which I’m sure will also be on Smackdown but that’s besides the point so shut your butt).

‘WWE RAW’ 12/2/13 Results + Notes – Cena/Orton Contract Signing, D-Bry Shrugs Off Kidnapping, Sin Cara (Sort-of) Returns

WWE Raw logo

Venue: Chesapeake Energy Arena (Oklahoma City, OK)

Commentators: Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & JBL

The hype for TLC 2013 continued this week on RAW as the two men involved in the main event, WWE Champion Randy Orton and World Heavyweight Champion John Cena, met at the end of the show to sign the contract for their “historic” unification match. Given how wrestling contract signings usually go you can probably guess how it concluded. Also on the show the Director Of Operations Kane assigned CM Punk and Daniel Bryan handicap matches for TLC 2013, dissension among Tons of Funk was teased, Sin Cara returned in a manner of speaking, and Wade Barrett brought his JBL and Cole Show character to the main stage.

Read on for results and notes from the show, gleamed from Jason Powell‘s much more detailed coverage/analysis over at ProWrestling.net.

Match Results

1. #1 Contender’s Match: Damien Sandow defeated Dolph Ziggler via pinfall with YOU’RE WELCOME (4:00).

  • Notes: I.C. Champ Big E Langston sat in on commentary. Sandow’s win earned him the opportunity to face Langston for the gold at TLC 2013.

2. Natalya & The Bella Twins (Nikki & Brie Bella) defeated *WWE Divas Champion* AJ LeeTamina Snuka, & Summer Rae when Natalya made Lee tap to the SHARPSHOOTER (4:25).

3. Daniel Bryan defeated Erick Rowan [w/ Luke Harper] via pinfall with a roll-up (14:00).

  • Post-Match: Bray Wyatt appeared on the TitanTron and beckoned Bryan to join their cause, saying united they can bring the machine to their knees.

4. R-Truth & Xavier Woods defeated Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] when Woods pinned Clay with a roll-up (4:05).

  • Notes: This was a rematch from Smackdown. Tons of Funk teased dissension, arguing with one another after the match was over.

5. Sin Cara defeated Alberto Del Rio via pinfall with the SWANTON (4:50).

  • Notes: Although Sin Cara the character returned, it was definitely not the same person playing him; judging by the tattoo Cara was once again portrayed by Hunico.

6. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns) defeated The Big Show and *WWE Tag Team Champions* Cody Rhodes & Goldust when Rollins pinned Goldust after he landed a superplex on Ambrose (20:40).

7. Ryback & Curtis Axel defeated The Miz & Kofi Kingston when Ryback pinned Kingston with SHELL SHOCK (5:55).

  • Post-Match: Miz helped Kingston up then slapped him in the face. They had put aside their difference to try and team again and I guess it didn’t work out so well.

8. Mark Henry defeated Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] via pinfall with the WORLD’S STRONGEST SLAM (3:25).

9. The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter] defeated The Prime Time Players (Darren Young & Titus O’Neil) when Cesaro pinned Young following a European uppercut (6:45).

  • Notes: This match played off of what happened on Smackdown when Cesaro’s Giant Swing made O’Neil throw up. Cesaro swung him again this time and O’Neil once again got super nauseous, tagging out to Young which led to the loss.

Important Segments & Other Notes

RAW concluded with a contract signing between WWE Champ Randy Orton and World Heavyweight Champ John Cena for their impending unification match at WWE TLC 2013, presided over by Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. As one would guess Cena and Orton bickered at one another, trading barbs, until it got physical. However it was Cena who was the aggressor, putting him through two different tables and standing tall to end the episode.

Kane made his presence felt this week, first interrupting CM Punk‘s opening show monologue to announce that he would face The Shield in a handicap match at TLC 2013 and later telling Daniel Bryan that he would face Bray Wyatt & The Wyatt Family in a handicap match as well on the PPV.

CM Punk opened the show by saying he knew that The Shield attacked him at the behest of “The Authority”, bringing out Stephanie McMahon to refute. The Shield then came out to attack Punk but McMahon told them not to, saying that he was to be respected and admired not attacked. This led into Kane making the handicap match for the PPV as highlighted above.

Wade Barrett made his return this week, using the “Bad News” gimmick he’s been doing on the JBL and Cole Show on WWE’s YouTube page. He came out twice to deliver bad news, which was mostly just making fun of the crowd.

-Next week the WWE presents the 2013 edition of The Slammy Awards and the company sprinkled hype throughout the show on various categories that will be highlighted.

‘WWE Smackdown’ 11/29/13 Results + Notes – Tag Team Title Defense, El Torito Makes His In-Ring Debut, Titus O’Neil Eats Too Much

WWE Smackdown

Venue: Mohegan Sun Arena (Uncasville, CT)

Commentators: Michael Cole & JBL

Tag team action dominated the second hour of Smackdown this week, beginning with a Tag Team Title defense as champions Cody Rhodes & Goldust took on Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns of The Shield. From there things snowballed into six-man action and then into 12-man action as CM Punk, The Usos, Rey Mysterio, and The Wyatt Family all got involved. Other stuff also happened on the show as well.

Read on for results and notes from this week’s episode, courtesy of Greg Parks’ much more detailed coverage/analysis over at PWTorch.

Match Results

  1. Mark Henry [w/ *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston] defeated Curtis Axel [w/ Ryback] via pinfall with the WORLD’S STRONGEST SLAM (3:09).
  2. Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) El Torito defeated “The Plymouth Rockers” (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre) (2:54).
  3. Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] defeated R-Truth & Xavier Woods when Clay pinned Woods following a second-rope splash (2:15).
  4. Antonio Cesaro [w/ Jack Swagger & Zeb Colter] defeated Titus O’Neil [w/ Darren Young] via DQ when Young interfered (2:00).
  5. Cody Rhodes & Goldust (c) defeated The Shield (Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) via DQ to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship when Dean Ambrose interfered (23:15).
  6. Goldust, Cody Rhodes, & CM Punk defeated The Shield via DQ when The Wyatt Family & Bray Wyatt interfered (11:30).
  7. CM Punk, Rey Mysterio, Cody Rhodes, Goldust, The Usos defeated Bray Wyatt, The Wyatt Family, The Shield when Punk pinned Erick Rowan with the GTS (8:46).

News + Notes

  • The second half of the show was dominated by tag team action as Vickie Guerrero changed the main event from a tag team match to a six-man match to a 12-man match due to constant interference each time.
  • Renee Young interviewed WWE Champion Randy Orton who said he was “playing possum” when The Big Show hit him with the KO Punch and that he didn’t need The Authority’s help to win anything. She then asked about TLC 2013 but Orton ducked her and left.
  • Vickie Guerrero held a food eating contest between Titus O’Neil and The Great Khali at the start of the show during a backstage party which included a host of other superstars. O’Neil won and ended up getting the grand prize of facing Antonio Cesaro in a match. Naturally Cesaro went for the Giant Swing in the match and the ensuing dizziness plus the fact he was super stuffed caused O’Neil to vomit in JBL’s hat before placing said hat on Michael Cole. This really happened.
  • Brodus Clay got into Xavier Woods‘ face backstage before their match, saying that he allowed Woods to use his music and The Funkadactyls but didn’t allow him to keep them. Clay continued to big league Woods and shoved him before exiting, R-Truth holding him back from a brawl.
  • Bray Wyatt cut a backstage promo saying that Daniel Bryan will reemerge a “monster” when they’re done with him.

‘WWE RAW’ 10/21/13 Results + Notes – D-Bry/Orton Contract Signing, The Big Show is Stone Cold

WWE Raw logo

Venue: FedEx Forum (Memphis, TN)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

With one week to go until Hell in a Cell it was contract time on RAW as Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton made their WWE Championship match official, with Triple H and guest referee Shawn Michaels in attendance. As with most contract signings, however, things did eventually break down and The Big Show made an appearance in a very “Stone Cold” fashion. Also on the show CM Punk teamed with newly-minted babyface Big E Langston to take on Paul Heyman’s guys, Ryback and Curtis Axel, and The Usos battled Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns for the right to challenge Cody Rhodes & Goldust for the WWE Tag Team Championship.

Read on for results and notes from the show, courtesy of Jason Powell‘s much more detailed coverage/analysis over at ProWrestling.net.

Match Results

1. Non-Title Match: Daniel Bryan defeated *WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose via submission with the YES! LOCK (16:20).

2. Santino Marella [w/ The Great Khali Hornswoggle] defeated Heath Slater [w/ Jinder Mahal Drew McIntyre] via pinfall with the COBRA (3:25).

  • Notes: Santino was in full Elvis garb because RAW was in Memphis this week. Khali and Hornswoggle had Elvis wigs. This happened.
  • Post-Match: Santino went to the announce table and got a “JERRY!” chant going for Lawler, who makes his home in Memphis. Santino and Lawler then climbed the announce table and did some brief Elvis shimmying.

3. Randy Orton defeated Dolph Ziggler via pinfall with the RKO (7:45).

4. The Bella Twins (Nikki & Brie Bella) defeated *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee Tamina Snuka when Brie pinned AJ with a facebuster (5:05).

5. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan) [w/ Bray Wyatt] defeated The Miz & Kofi Kingston when Harper pinned Kingston with a discus clothesline (4:55).

  • Post-Match: Harper & Rowan beat Miz up and tied him up in the ropes as Bray made his way ringside. He told Miz that he had already beaten him without lifting a finger then said he was there to lead Miz to the gates of hell. Potential Kane reference? Nah, probably stretching.

6. CM Punk & Big E Langston defeated Ryback & *WWE I.C. Champion* Curtis Axel [w/ Paul Heyman] when Langston pinned Axel with the BIG ENDING (Time Not Recorded).

  • Notes: It was inititally supposed to be a Langston/Axel non-title match but then a brawl broke out and all of a sudden it was a tag team contest courtesy of Vickie Guerrero.

7. The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter] defeated Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] when Swagger made Clay tap to the ANKLE LOCK (3:35).

  • Notes: Colter joined in on commentary then showcased his new weapon, a bull whip. Dutch Mantell is in full-force. Colter spent his time on commentary running down Los Matadores.

8. #1 Contender’s Match: The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) fought The Shield (Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) [w/ Dean Ambrose] to a no-contest (14:40).

  • Notes: Tag Champs Cody Rhodes & Goldust were at ringside doing commentary. A scuffle emerged between all three teams, leading to the no-contest.

(Important) Segments/Notes

  • RAW concluded with a contract signing between Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton for Hell in a Cell. Both men said their piece about one another and signed their contract, and then it was time for Triple H to talk. Triple H said that if people like Bryan (Edge, etc.) had become the “face of the WWE” then they would be owned by WCW right now and Bryan challenged him to wrestle. Triple H said if he wrestles again it’ll be against big stars like The Rock or The Undertaker, not him then said Shawn Michaels should have never bothered training him. HBK, who was also present, interjected and said that Bryan was good and that he didn’t waste his time training him back in the day. He then lamented that Triple H was no longer the cool guy he once was; now he was just a corporate suit. HBK asked why Triple H didn’t like Bryan, bringing up the fact he’s small and the fact he has a giant beard, then asked Trips if it was because he kept persevering despite everything Triple H had put in front of him. At that point The Big Show drove out to the arena in a big semi-truck and got on the hood, doing a “YES!” chant. Bryan caught Orton with a Busaiku Knee and led a “YES!” chant as well to conclude the segment and the show.
  • Brad Maddox was not on the show as he suffered a “concussion” from The Big Show’s Knockout Punch on Smackdown so Vickie Guerrero took charge instead.
  • Announced for Smackdown: The Miz will host MizTV with special guest, and heated rival, Randy Orton.
  • Announced for Hell in a Cell: AJ Lee defends the Divas Championship against Brie Bella, Curtis Axel will defend the I.C. Championship against Big E Langston during the pre-show.

Jon’s ‘WWE Main Event’ 10/16/13 Recap + Review – Ambrose Vs. Ziggler for U.S. Championship, Santino & Tons of Funk Vs. 3MB

mainevent

Commentators: Josh Matthews & The Miz

The U.S. Championship is on the line (I know, right?) this week on Main Event as The Shield’s Dean Ambrose defends against rival Dolph Ziggler. Tons of Funk also looks for revenge against 3MB as they team up with Santino Marella for six-man tag team action.

Read on for results, notes, and a full recap/review of the show.

Match Results

  1. Dean Ambrose (c) defeated Dolph Ziggler via pinfall with the HEADLOCK DRIVER to retain the WWE United States Championship (12:54).
  2. Santino Marella Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] defeated 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre) when Marella pinned Slater with the COBRA (5:17).
  3. Damien Sandow defeated R-Truth via pinfall with a Full Nelson Slam (4:41).
  4. The Great Khali [w/ Hornswoggle Natalya] defeated Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] via pinfall with the BRAIN CHOP (3:11).

News + Notes

  • The Miz returned to commentary this week, replacing his replacement Alex Riley.

Overall Show Thoughts

  • Ambrose/Ziggler started Main Event off on a high and then the show just plummeted with do-nothing matches. As much as I applaud WWE for “thinking out of the box” with the way the show is set up (marquee match first, everything else after), it’s hard as hell to stay interested in this show after the one match that matters has completed. That’s not to say I wasn’t entertained by some of it but I just knew that the rest was just filler. Oh well. Skippable week.

-WWE Signature/Main Event Intro-

—–

Pyrotechnics galore greet us as we go “live” to the arena. Josh Matthews quickly welcomes the home audience before Dolph Ziggler makes his way out for the opening contest. The Miz is back on commentary this week. Ziggler’s opponent, the U.S. Champ Dean Ambrose, makes his way out through the crowd. Matthews brings up the fact that Ambrose’s Shield mates lost their titles on Monday and questions if the same will happen to him tonight.

—–

Match #1: Dean Ambrose (c) Vs. Dolph Ziggler for the WWE U.S. Championship

Ziggler immediately catches Ambrose with a dropkick and covers for 2, then rolls him up for another 2-count before Ambrose bails out of the ring to quickly regroup. Ziggler slides out and chases Ambrose back into the ring, running into a couple of stomps. Ambrose takes Ziggler down with a side headlock. They get to their feet and Ziggler reverses into a headlock of his own. Ambrose whips him into the ropes but gets floored with a shoulderblock. Ziggler blocks a hip toss and hits a neckbreaker for 2. Ziggler immediately connects with a jumping elbow and covers again, this time for 1. Ziggler hits another jumping elbow and covers for 1 once more. Ziggler hits a third jumping elbow with the same result.

Ambrose backs Ziggler into the corner and connects with a couple of rights before facewashing him with his forearm. Ambrose connects with a chest chop then brings him to the next corner. Ambrose connects with a right jab to Ziggler’s jaw but Ziggler fights back with a series of rights. Ambrose reverses an Irish whip and catches Ziggler with a back elbow. He follows it up with an elbow drop for 2. Ambrose immediately applies a seated sleeperhold. Ambrose goes for a back suplex but Ziggler lands on his feet and hits a clothesline. Ziggler goes for another clothesline but Ambrose sends him into the ropes. Ziggler ducks a series of clotheslines then hits one of his own sending both men out to the floor. Both men fight to recover as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Ambrose takes Ziggler down with a knee to the gut as we return from commercial. Ambrose covers for 2 then drags him towards the corner. Ambrose climbs to the second rope and connects with a flying stomp for another 2-count. Ambrose wrenches the head and wraps Ziggler’s own arms around his chin to wear him down. Ziggler gets to his feet but goes right back down courtesy of a short-arm clothesline. Ambrose connects with a jumping stomp for 2, then drops a boot into Ziggler’s midsection. Ambrose turns Ziggler around and applies a deathlock/chinlock at the same time. Ziggler escapes, but Ambrose keeps a chinlock applied. Ziggler escapes with a jawbreaker, which angers Ambrose. Ambrose sends Ziggler to the apron, but Ziggler jacks his neck against the top rope and heads to the top. Ziggler connects with a missile dropkick and covers for the 1…2…kickout.

Ambrose begs to the corner and Ziggler meets him there 8 right hands of doom. Ambrose carries him out of the corner but Ziggler reverses into a pin for the 1…2…kickout. The two trade pinfall attempts then Ziggler hits a running clothesline for the 1…2…kickout. Ambrose dodges a kick but Ziggler ducks a clothesline and attempts a backslide. Ambrose holds his ground and attempts a backslide of his own. Ziggler flips over and connects with a Fameasser for the 1…2…kickout! Ziggler attempts the Zig Zag, but Ambrose bails to the outside. Ziggler follows him out and Ambrose meets him, connecting with a snap suplex right on the floor. Ambrose rolls Ziggler in and heads to the top. Ziggler pops up and runs to meet him, hitting a top-rope X-Factor for the 1…2…KICKOUT. Snap!

Ziggler applies a backpack sleeper and Ambrose starts fading. Ambrose rams Ziggler into the corner then drops down. Ambrose charges at Ziggler but only meets the corner and Ziggler rolls him up for the 1…2…kickout. Ziggler jumps to the second turnbuckle but Ambrose pulls him off by the tights then connects with the HEADLOCK DRIVER for the 1…2…3!

Winner and STILL United States Champion [via Pinfall]: Dean Ambrose (12:54)

  • Match Thoughts: Good match to start off the show with some fun offense from both men, but the crowd just did not seem to give a damn. Their loss. Ambrose winning the way he did felt pretty anticlimactic after the pinfall exchange spot and some of the other things they pulled off during the course of the contest; it’s like they pushed it to 9 then went back to 6 for the conclusion. Still it was a good match and a good title defense for Ambrose; more importantly it was a good example of how to use Main Event as a show. This could be a cool weekly showcase for the oft-forgotten secondary champions if WWE wants to put the thought into it…but given how high-profile Main Event used to be they probably don’t want to. Shame.

—–

Matthews and Miz segue into a video hyping the return of John Cena at Hell in a Cell.

—–

Santino Marella makes his way out for the next match, a six-man tag team contest.  Marella jokes around with the crowd while on the entrance ramp, then out comes The Funkadactyls to herald the coming of Tons of Funk. Marella dances with the foursome, even donning a floppy hat to do so. They’re in action next!

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

Time has stood still and the Tons of Funk entrance is still going as we return from break. Eventually it’s broken up by their opponents, 3MB, who make their way out second.

—–

Match #2: Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] & Santino Marella Vs. 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre)

Clay and Slater start off. Clay backs Slater into the corner then goes to break clean but Slater catches him with a right jab. Slater connects with another, then tries a third but apparently hits the hard part of Clay’s skull and screams in pain. Clay hits him with a headbutt then splashes him in the corner. Marella tags in and gets some rights in before tagging in Tensai. Tensai goes for a move but Slater holds onto the ropes and tags in Mahal. Mahal grabs a waistlock and Tensai backs him into the corner. Tensai locks knuckles with Mahal and takes him down with a monkey flip followed by a delayed butterfly suplex for a 2-count.

Clay tags back in and hits an elbow drop on Mahal after Tensai slams him for a 2-count. Mahal connects with a jawbreaker out of nowhere and tags in McIntyre, who takes him down with a running kick for 2. McIntyre goes into the full mount and connects with repeated right hands before tagging Slater in. Slater and McIntyre connect with a double suplex and Slater covers for the 1…2…kickout. Mahal tags in and kicks Clay in the ribs, following it up with back to back flying kneedrops for the 1…2…kickout. McIntyre tags back in and mocks Marella before going back to Clay. Clay pushes McIntyre into the corner then connects with a headbutt to the gut when he tries a high-flying move. Mahal tags in and prevents a Tons of Funk tag but Clay catches Mahal with a T-bone suplex and tags into Marella.

Marella takes it right to McIntyre, connecting with a hip-toss followed by a headbutt. Marella brings out the Cobra, and Slater/McIntyre run in to prevent it. Tons of Funk meet them and the fight goes to the outside for those four men. Marella goes for the Cobra once again but Slater grabs him by the wrist from the apron. McIntyre also joins in and grabs Marella’s arm. Tons of Funk splash the duo and Marella flies Cobra-first into Mahal for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Santino Marella & Tons of Funk (5:17)

  • Match Thoughts: And thus ends 3MB’s impressive Main Event winning streak of, erm, one match. Oh well. The match was a blow-off comedy affair but I was entertained so I can’t say anything too bad about it. Better here than on an important show like Raw.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

RAW Recap: The Rhodes Brothers win the WWE Tag Team Championship, thanks to The Big Show and much to the chagrin of Triple H. We then cut to Matthews and Miz who says Triple H will address all concerned parties on Monday.

—–

R-Truth makes his way out for the next match. He’s in action after the commercial.

  • Thoughts: Matthews saying R-Truth was in action after the commercial felt more like a threat than anything.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

R-Truth’s opponent, Damien Sandow, makes his way out second. He’s wearing a towel instead of the full-on blue robe and carries the Money in the Bank briefcase, handcuffs and everything.

—–

Match #3: R-Truth Vs. Damien Sandow

Truth with the hammerlock to start. Sandow escapes with a snap mare then rams Truth into the corner, connecting with a series of strikes and shoulderblocks to the midsection. The ref pulls him off, but Sandow immediately goes back on the attack, fire in his eyes. Sandow goes for a suplex but Truth blocks it and rolls him up with an inside cradle for 2. Truth kicks Sandow down but Sandow dodges the Ax Kick and drives the knee into the gut. Sandow connects with a snap suplex and floats over into a cover for 2. Truth takes Sandow down with a shoulderblock and covers for 2. Sandow fights back and sends Truth flying out to the floor. Sandow slams Truth’s head repeatedly into the apron then throws him back-first into the barricade. Matthews laughs at Miz for saying he and Truth sold out Survivor Series. My thoughts exactly.

Sandow rolls Truth back in and covers for 2, then hits the side Russian Legsweep and follows it up with the Elbow of Disdain for the 1…2…kickout. Sandow drives the knee into Truth’s back then hits a series of forearms to the jaw before locking on a rear-chinlock. Truth gets the hold broken and catches a running Sandow with a spinning heel kick. Truth catches Sandow with an uppercut in the corner and follows up with a series of clotheslines and a front-facing sitout suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Sandow catches Truth a back elbow but runs right into a kick. Truth follows it up with the Ax Kick for the 1…2…kickout! Truth can’t believe it. Truth goes for a suplex but Sandow lands on his feet behind him and connects with the Full-Nelson Slam for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Damien Sandow (4:41)

  • Match Thoughts: Nothing technically wrong with this, but that’s not to say I was all that invested. Glad to see Sandow actually win a match for once now; it’s almost like he’s a Money in the Bank briefcase holder or something!

—–

RAW Recap: Matthews narrates over CM Punk beating Curtis Axel in a Beat the Clock challenge. Punk then names the stipulation for Hell in a Cell: Punk Vs. Ryback/Paul Heyman in a Handicap match…IN A HELL IN A CELL.

  • Thoughts: On the surface Punk wanting to lock himself in a cage with two people seems like a bone-headed move but Punk has beaten Ryback so many times at this point that he and Heyman together barely equal one person to begin with. So, in a weird way, it’s logical.

—–

We go back “live” to the arena as Fandango makes his entrance for the next, and I assume final, match, joined by dance partner Summer Rae. Fandango has his own pink “Rise Above Cancer” shirt. What a heel. He goes one-on-one with The Great Khali after the commercial.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

Fandango and Summer Rae are dancing in the ring as we come back from break, with Matthews excitedly telling the home audience that Enrique Iglesias tweeted at the dancing superstar. His opponent, The Great Khali, makes his way out second joined by Hornswoggle and Natalya who’s apparently back in the group. He also has a breast cancer shirt.

—–

Match #4: The Great Khali [w/ Hornswoggle & Natalya] Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]

Fandango goes for a kick but Khali grabs it and shakes his butt before sending him to the mat. Fandango connects with a chop but Khali fights him off then connects with an open hand slap across his chest. Khali backs Fandango into the opposite corner and connects once again with an open hand slap. Summer Rae climbs to the apron to distract Khali but Natalya pulls her off the apron. Fandango uses the distraction and clips the knee. Fandango slams the knee across the apron then works it over some more in the ring. Khali breaks out with a forearm then connects with a chest chop while on his knees. Khali continues his comeback with a big boot across the jaw and back to back clotheslines. Khali gets in position for the Brain Chop but Fandango begs off into the corner to force the ref to separate them. Fandango clips the knee once more and heads to the top. Fandango flies right into a BRAIN CHOP and Khali covers for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: The Great Khali (3:11)

  • Match Thoughts: Uuuuuugggggghhhhhh. A match best left for Saturday Morning Slam or any show that I don’t watch on a weekly basis.

Post-Match: Khali, Hornswoggle, and Natalya dance to end this week’s episode.

‘WWE RAW’ 10/14/13 Results + Notes – New Tag Team Champs, CM Punk Adds a Stip to his HIAC Match, Triple H and Stephanie Accept Being Villains, HBK/Orton Confrontation

WWE Raw logo

Venue: Scottrade Center (St. Louis, MO)

Commentators: Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & JBL

The WWE Tag Team Championship got the spotlight this week as Cody Rhodes & Goldust took on The Shield in the main event. CM Punk and Ryback also competed in a “Beat the Clock Challenge” for the right to add a stipulation to their upcoming Hell in a Cell match, upcoming special guest ref Shawn Michaels had words with Randy Orton, and Triple HStephanie McMahon addressed the actions of The Big Show from the end of last week’s episode.

Read on for results and notes from the show, gleamed from Jason Powell‘s recap/analysis over at ProWrestling.net.

Match Results

1. Randy Orton defeated The Miz via pinfall with the RKO.

  • Note: The Wyatt Family appeared on the stage, distracting Miz long enough to fall prey to the RKO.
  • Post-Match: Bray Wyatt cut a promo saying Miz represented everything he hates in the world, then told him he was going to put him down. Wyatt concluded with “Follow the Buzzards”.

2. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] defeated Santino Marella via pinfall with a roll-up (2:30).

3. Los Matadores (Fernando & Diego) [w/ El Torito] defeated 3MB (Heath Slater & Drew McIntyre) [w/ Jinder Mahal] following their double Torture Rack drop finisher on Slater (4:05).

  • Post-Match: El Torito joined in on the action by beating up Jinder Mahal.

4. Beat the Clock Challenge: Ryback [w/ Paul Heyman] defeated R-Truth via pinfall with SHELL SHOCK (5:44).

  • Notes: R-Truth intentionally stalled at the start of the match to waste time and run up the clock as a way of getting back at the Heyman camp.

5. The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter] defeated Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] when Cesaro pinned Tensai following the CESARO SWING (5:45).

  • Notes: A pre-taped promo from Colter aired, talking about his distaste of Los Matadores.

6. Tamina Snuka [w/ *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee] defeated Brie Bella via pinfall with the BIG BOOT (4:30).

  • Pre-Match: Stephanie McMahon had caught up with The Bella Twins backstage earlier in the show, congratulating Brie on her engagement to Daniel Bryan then telling her that Nikki Bella wouldn’t be allowed at ringside for the match against Tamina…but AJ Lee would be allowed to be in her opponent’s corner.
  • Post-Match: Tamina continued the attack on Brie, finishing up her flurry with a Superfly Splash. AJ Lee then got in the mix, applying a Black Widow, until Nikki Bella came out to make the save and scare them off.

7. Beat the Clock (Non-Title): CM Punk defeated *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Curtis Axel [w/ Paul Heyman] via pinfall with the GTS (5:33).

  • Post-Match: By virtue of his win, Punk got to pick the stipulation for his Hell in a Cell match. He did so immediately after beating Axel, saying that he wanted Ryback and Heyman in a handicap match…INSIDE THE HELL IN A CELL. So there you go.

8. Non-Title Match: *World Heavyweight Champion* Alberto Del Rio defeated Daniel Bryan via countout (16:25).

  • Note: The TitanTron aired a video of Randy Orton entering the Bella Twins’ locker room, causing Bryan to leave the match and give the win to Del Rio via countout.
  • Post-Match: Daniel Bryan rushed to the locker room and was attacked from behind by Randy Orton. Orton glared at Brie Bella then walked off, leaving Brie and a trainer to check on Bryan.

9. No-DQ Match: Cody Rhodes & Goldust defeated The Shield (Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) (c) [w/ *WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose] when Cody pinned Reigns to win the WWE Tag Team Championship (19:20).

  • Notes: Before the match Triple H met up with The Shield backstage and announced it was a No-DQ match. He told the trio to “finish it”. Towards the end of the match The Big Show made his way out from through the crowd and knocked out Rollins and Ambrose. He then knocked Reigns out through the ropes, allowing Cody to cover him for the pin.
  • Post-Match: Triple H went mental as The Big Show smiled from the crowd and The Rhodes Brothers celebrated with the title belts. This concluded this week’s episode.

Segments/Notes

  • Shawn Michaels opened the show, bringing up his past training Daniel Bryan and his own dislike of Randy Orton plus his own connections to Triple H. He guaranteed that through his officiating a new WWE Champion would be crowned (for real real) at Hell in a Cell. Orton made his way out and said that as a St. Louis native he was aware of how dumb most of the people in the city are then said that HBK was mad that he could never be as good as him and threatened HBK if he “screwed” him out of the WWE Championship at the PPV. HBK retorted back and Orton tried to attack, but HBK fought back and went for Sweet Chin Music but Orton ducked it. The Miz then came out and attacked Orton, setting up the opening contest.
  • GM Brad Maddox met backstage with Ryback and Paul Heyman, who were trying to stack the deck in their favor for Hell in a Cell due to Punk using underhanded tactics at Battleground. Maddox said that didn’t seem fair then announced two Beat the Clock challenge matches, with the winner getting to pick the stipulation for the HIAC rematch.
  • Triple H and Stephanie McMahon came out to address what happened last week. Triple H said that the fans chanting “YES!” while he was out cold from a Big Show K.O. Punch last week was his breaking point and if the fans wanted him and his wife to be the villains they would do just that. Triple H said Show would now live in financial ruin for what he did. Daniel Bryan made his way out and was attacked out of nowhere by Alberto Del Rio, setting up their match for later in the night.
  • Two vignettes aired hyping the return of John Cena, one about his WWE career and one about his road to recovery.
  • Announced for Main Event: Dean Ambrose will defend the U.S. Championship against Dolph Ziggler.

Jon’s ‘WWE Main Event’ 10/9/13 Recap + Review – Tons of Funk Vs. 3MB, Big E Langston Vs. Zack Ryder, Divas in Action

mainevent

Commentators: Josh Matthews & Alex Riley

On this week’s episode of Main Event the team of Tons of Funk takes on 3MBBig E Langston eats Zack Ryder alive once again, and much more. Read on for results, notes, and a full recap/review of the show.

Match Results

  1. 3-on-2 Handicap Match: 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre) defeated Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] when Slater pinned Clay (5:48).
  2. Tamina Snuka defeated Aksana via pinfall with a big boot (3:30).
  3. Big E Langston defeated Zack Ryder via pinfall with the BIG ENDING (10:12).

News + Notes

  • The Punk/Ryback rematch at HIAC was made official.

Overall Show Thoughts

  • Three low-quality matches and a bunch of RAW recaps equals an episode of Main Event not really worth watching. HOWEVER this episode also featured 3MB actually winning a match so if you’re into rare moments this is up your alley. You could find a better way to spend an hour though, I promise.

-WWE Signature/Main Event Intro-

—–

Following the pyrotechnics display we pan the crowd as Josh Matthews welcomes the home audience. “Somebody Call My Mama” hits bringing out Tons of Funk for the opening contest, led by The Funkadactyls. Matthews’ broadcast partner, Alex Riley, is tongue-tied because the Funkadactyls are touching butts on the apron. T.O.F. finishes up their entrance and the pyro goes off. Their opponents, 3MB, make their way out second. All three are wrestling this time around since this is apparently a handicap match. A-Ry apparently had shoulder surgery earlier this week but is already back to work. C-show commentary waits for no man.

  • Thoughts: Drew McIntyre is alive and well after all!

—–

Match #1: Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] Vs. 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre) in a 3-ON-2 HANDICAP MATCH

Clay and Slater start the match off for their respective teams. Clay rushes in and Slater catches him with a right hand. Slater ducks another strike attempt and connects with a quick jab. Slater tries to duck for a third time but Clay grabs him by the hair and slams him to the mat. Clay slams Slater once more then follows up with a terrible-looking T-Bone suplex. Tensai tags in but their double team move is thwarted when Slater hangs on to the ropes. Mahal tags in and takes it right to Tensai but he gets dropped with a shoulderblock. Tensai headbutts Mahal in the corner then connects with a monkey flip. Tensai follows up with a delayed butterfly suplex for a 2-count.

Clay tags back in and Tons of Funk connect with double back elbows off an Irish whip. Clay covers for 2 then tags back out to Tensai. Tensai connects with a headbutt but misses a corner splash and falls victim to a flying knee. McIntyre tags in and hits a corner clothesline followed by a running one-foot dropkick for a 2-count. McIntyre kips up and chokes Tensai against the middle rope. Slater tags in and makes with the jabs in the corner. Tensai fights back with a back elbow and shoves Slater to the mat, but Slater rebounds with a dropkick to the knees for a 2-count. Slater immediately slaps on a rear chinlock to wear his opponent down.

Tensai gets to his feet but Slater connects with repeated right jabs. Slater takes too long to gloat, allowing Tensai to catch him with a right and toss him out of the ring. McIntyre rolls Slater back in but it’s too late as Clay gets the hot tag. Mahal tags in but falls victim to a T-Bone suplex (better this time) followed by a corner splash and a slam to the mat. Clay heads to the second turnbuckle and connects with a splash for the 1…2…McIntyre breaks the count. Slater gets the tag as McIntyre fights with Tensai on the outside. Slater catches Clay with a knee on the apron then follows up with a catapult twisting splash for the 1…2…3! 3MB WINS! 3MB WINNNNNNS!

Winners [via Pinfall]: 3MB (5:48)

  • Match Thoughts: Sure it was a handicap match and sure it’s against a fellow jobber team but guys guys guys 3MB finally won a match! Excuse me while I take a victory lap around my apartment. Oh my god this is what my life has turned into.

Post-Match: 3MB celebrates by taking a bow. My standing ovation commences.

—–

We cut to the announce table where Matthews and Riley talk about the CM Punk/Ryback at Battleground. They hype up the rematch coming at Hell in a Cell.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

Matthews and Riley hype the Bryan/Orton main event at Hell in a Cell which will feature Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee. Aksana makes her way out for the next match, wearing a “Diva” shirt over her wrestling attire. Her opponent, Tamina Snuka, makes her way out second.

  • Thoughts: I do not have high hopes for this match in the slightest but I’m glad to see both Divas get the TV time. Also if you’ll permit me to be a pigheaded man for a second…OMG AKSANA HUMINA HUMINA HUMINA.

—–

Match #2: Aksana Vs. Tamina Snuka

Aksana stops Snuka to take her Diva shirt off, but Snuka attacks her instead. Aksana kicks her off but Snuka fights back with a couple of chops and stomps in the corner. Aksana dodges a corner splash and takes her to the mat with a wristlock. Aksana works over the shoulder and arm then covers for 2. Aksana applies an overhead wristlock as the crowd struggles to figure out who they’re supposed to cheer for. Snuka gets to her feet but Aksana immediately pulls her down to the mat. Aksana follows up with a sidewalk slam then seductively crawls around the ring. Snuka kicks Aksana in the face mid-crawl and takes control. Snuka brings Aksana to the mat with a snapmare and follows up with a running kneedrop for 2. Snuka applies a chinlock to further wear her opponent down.

Aksana gets to her feet and breaks out with elbows and strikes, then follows it up with a neckbreaker for 2. Aksana tries another pinfall with the same result. Aksana hits the ropes but misses a dropkick. Snuka gets to her feet and connects with a gutbuster followed by a big boot for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Tamina Snuka (3:30)

  • Match Thoughts: Yup the match went about as bad as I expected, with the crowd sitting on their hands due to the fact there was no one to cheer for (both were heels and both tried the “babyface in peril” chinlock spots to no avail). Snuka not using the Superfly Splash was also surprising, making her win with the big boot feel sudden. Still happy these two got some TV time and everything but…oof.

RAW Recap: Stephanie McMahon “fires” The Big Show.

—–

Matthews and Riley tease the continuation of The Big Show’s story from RAW later tonight as Zack Ryder makes his way out for the next match. He’s in action next!

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

Matthews puts over the WWE/Susan G. Komen partnership as we return live. Ryder’s opponent, Big E Langston, makes his way out. I wonder how this match is gonna go.

Match #3: Zack Ryder Vs. Big E Langston

Langston uses his power to take the early advantage, gooziling Ryder to the top turnbuckle and slapping him. Ryder gets angry and fights back but runs right into a shoulderblock. Riley and Matthews put over Ryder’s Twitter follower count because that’s literally all he’s good for nowadays. Langston wrenches in a side headlock and connects with a forearm when Ryder tries to break out. Langston reapplies the deep side headlock, bringing Ryder to his knees. Ryder tries again to break out but eats a right hand to the midsection. Ryder leapfrogs a running Langston and ducks a clothesline attempt. Ryder follows up with a flying forearm that sends Langston to the mat, then a dropkick that causes Langston to roll out of the ring. Ryder connects with a jumping baseball slide, and we head to commercial with Langston angrily trying to regroup.

-Commercial Break-

Ryder has Langston in a front chancery as we return from the break. Langston escapes and connects with a strike to the ribs that sends him crumpling to the mat. Langston continues the rib punches in the corner, followed by the running midsection shoulderblock. Ryder crumples to the mat and Langston covers for the 1…2…kickout. Langston picks Ryder up and applies a standing side bearhug. Ryder boxes the ears and breaks the hold, but Langston catches him in a release belly-to-belly suplex for the 1…2…kickout. This match is lasting a lot longer than I expected. Langston with another right hand to the ribs but misses the follow-up running splash.

Ryder mounts the comeback, connecting with the second-rope missile dropkick to the back of Langston’s head. Ryder pumps the fist and connects with the Broski Boot but Langston slides out of the ring to avoid a follow-up. Ryder runs out after him and Langston tosses him into the ropes then hits a massive running clothesline. That was awesome. Langston rolls Ryder in and rams him into the corner. Langston picks Ryder up but Ryder slips out and rolls him up for the 1…2…kickout. Ryder dodges a corner splash and hits a running splash/forearm followed by another. Ryder goes for the hat trick but Langston counters with an STO. Langston gets a running head start and runs him over. Langston pulls the straps down and finishes Ryder off with the BIG ENDING for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Big E Langston (10:12)

  • Match Thoughts: I’ve watched Langston wipe the floor with Ryder many times before so I was more than a little shocked that this one went ten minutes. Unfortunately its super slow pace didn’t justify the extra time, but we did get Langston’s awesome “throw you into the ropes on the outside and follow up with a massive clothesline” spot that I wish I could watch over and over again. It was a cool random bit of offense that I hope becomes a bigger part of his repertoire. Hell I just hope Langston gets a feud soon; the man’s talent is going to waste (*insert “WATCH NXT, DAMMIT!” comment here*).

mainevent

Taped from Baton Rouge, LA

Commentators: Josh Mathews and Alex Riley

This week on Main Event Santino Marella takes on Damien SandowThe Prime Time Players once again face The Wyatt FamilyTons of Funk face The Real Americans, and Curtis Axel is in non-title action against Zack Ryder. Read on for Jerome’s recap and analysis of each match.

*****

Match #1: Santino Marella vs. Damien Sandow

Sandow calling out the fans for being stupid for cheering Marella is one of the better lines I’ve heard from him. Marella chases Sandow out of the ring with a naked Cobra. Not sure if that’s nearly as effective. Some basic wrestling to start. Clothesline by Sandow to block a hip toss. Marella finally gets a series of hip tosses and chases Sandow into the corner. Shoulder blocks by Sandow. Marella walks across the ring. Marella has enough and knees him in the midsection. Russian legsweep by Marella. Knees from Sandow. Out goes Marella.

-Commercial Break-

Marella in a bodyscissors as we come back. Sandow with a shot to the throat. Knee strike across the head. Chinlock.  Sandow drives Marella into the mat. Deposited to the floor. Marella rammed into the apron. Again he goes. Sandow sets him up and delivers an elbow strike. To the chinlock. Sandow reverses a suplex and ends up on top. Marella rammed into the top turnbuckle. Marella begins no-selling. He makes Ultimate Warrior like movements… and then collapses. Elbow of disdain. Forearm sends Marella down. Second one blocked. Back drop driver by Marella. Blind charge misses. Marella with right hands. Splits. Hip toss. Saluting headbutt. Out comes the Cobra. Sandow exits the ring. Sandow rips it off. Kick to the gut and Silencer. Sandow wins.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Damien Sandow/7:53 shown/**

  • Jerome’s Analysis: Santino is always good for a laugh, and Sandow didn’t lose. Winner!

-Triple H interview. Guy sure does talk a lot.

—–

Match #2: The Prime Time Players (Titus O’Neill and Darren Young) vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper and Erick Rowan)

Young with a forearm, kick, and headbutt to Harper. Young is hesitant as Rowan enters the ring and tags in O’Neill. Double team on the large Rowan. Double shoulder tackle. Young cover but not even a count. Rowan with a standing leg lariat. Young slammed into the top turnbuckle. Series of clubbering blows by Harper. One final shot sends Young down. Slingshot into the middle turnbuckle. Rowan with a knee. Elbow drop. Front facelock by Harper. Young enziguri and hot tag to O’Neill. Shoulder block for Harper. Rowan sent off the apron. Whip and splash on Harper. He barks. Boot to Harper. Powerslam gets two. Young works over Rowan with forearms. Rowan tosses Young over. O’Neill tosses Rowan out. Harper gets a twisting lariat and picks up the victory.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: The Wyatt Family/4:20/*1/2

  • Jerome’s Analysis: Too short to really mean much, but the Wyatts continue to do what they can in the time given. Because of the “Corporation” angle, it’s really tough to get other heels over or even concentrate on them, so unfortunately, they’re in treading water territory.

Preview of Battleground, a PPV that may be the least bought in history.

  • Editor’s Note: As long as December to Disemember still exists (and it will because time travel is impossible) then I think every other WWE PPV is safe from being the “least-bought”).

—–

Match #3: Zack Ryder Vs. *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Curtis Axel [w/ Paul Heyman] in a NON-TITLE MATCH

SOMEONE LET ZACK RYDER ON TV? OH MAN, SOMEONE IS GETTING FIRED! Quick clothesline by Ryder. Roll-up for two. He said he was this close, bro. Yeah, and then he got his knees cut out from under him. Clothesline to the back of the head by Axel. Ryder sent hard into the top turnbuckle. Snapmare and neck snap. Dropkick. Axel with an elbow off the middle rope. Ryder with a facebuster. Leaping clothesline. Ryder sent into the corner. Double knees and a middle rope missile dropkick. Dropkick to the back of the head. Broski Boot (which is merely a face wash). Axel holds onto the bottom rope. Axel with a kick. Neckbreaker gets three.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Curtis Axel/3:50/*

  • Jerome’s Analysis: I’m surprised Ryder lasted as long as he did. Axel is perfectly acceptable in the ring, but man, he just doesn’t do anything for me as a character.

—–

-Raw recap. Man, Triple H likes to talk. I also love how he went inside baseball on the Rhodes family and left behind a group of fans whose parents probably weren’t even born (or were really young at the very least) during Dusty Rhodes’ prime.

—–

Match #4: The Real Americans (Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger) [w/ Zeb Colter] vs. Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay and Tensai)

Swagger with right hands on Clay. Clay with a trio of bodyslam. Exploder. Cover for two. Swagger sent into the corner. Swagger with a chop block on Clay. Cesaro with a series of boots. Cesaro Swing on Clay. What a freaking beast. Front facelock. Swagger comes in the ring. Clay fights out of the corner. Clotheslines by Swagger. Second rope splash. Cesaro leap frogs his partner and hits a double stomp. Clay tosses Swagger over his head. Tensai with right hands on Cesaro. Big shoulder tackle. Cannonball senton. Cover for two. Clay knocks Swagger off. Double charge by Tons of Funk. Clay pulled out of the ring by Swagger. Swagger knocked off the apron. Cesaro hits the The Neutralizer on Tensai to get three.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: The Real Americans/4:34/*

  • Jerome’s Analysis: Cesaro is a machine. That’s all that matters.

‘WWE RAW’ 9/16/13 Results + Notes – Night of Champions Fallout, The Big Show Meets The American Dream, D-Bry Gets Some D-Backup, Ryback Hates Bullies (But Loves Paul Heyman)

WWE Raw logo

Venue: Quicken Loans Arena (Cleveland, OH)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

As expected shenanigans were afoot on RAW as COO Triple H once again crushed the dreams of Daniel Bryan fans and took the WWE Championship away from him. However Bryan would have the last laugh (sort-of) at the end of the night when, after weeks of being victimized by Randy Orton and The Shield, members of the locker room had enough and fought back. The Big Show also continued his saga of “I’m poor because what is an iron-clad contract?”, this time turning his WMD to the face of WWE legend Dusty Rhodes to further the McMahon Vs. Rhodes story. Oh and some matches happened too.

Read on for results and notes from the show, gleamed from Jason Powell‘s in-depth coverage/analysis over at ProWrestling.net.

Match Results

  1. Non-Title Match: Dolph Ziggler defeated *WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose via pinfall with the ZIG ZAG (11:10).
  2. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] defeated R-Truth via pinfall with the top-rope legdrop (3:25).
  3. Brie Bella The Funkadactyls (Cameron & Naomi) defeated Aksana, Layla, & Alicia Fox when Brie pinned Aksana (3:00); after the match Natalya and Divas Champ AJ Lee got in each other’s faces, the latter holding up her belt and signaling that a match between the two was on the horizon.
  4. Rob Van Dam [w/ Ricardo Rodriguez] defeated Damien Sandow via pinfall with the FIVE STAR FROG SPLASH (2:35); Sandow got on the mic after and reminded everyone he still held the Money in the Bank briefcase was a “guaranteed” World Champion.
  5. The Miz and Randy Orton fought to a double countout (1:45); Orton attacked Miz before the bell and injured him, but Miz wanted the match to continue anyway. Orton then injured Miz even more after the match, delivering a kneedrop to the chair wrapped around Miz’s head.
  6. The Usos won a #1 CONTENDERS ELIMINATION MATCH, last defeating The Real Americans [w/ Zeb Colter] when one of the Usos pinned Swagger with the Samoan Splash (13:10); Tons of Funk were also in the contest but were eliminated by The Real Americans.
  7. Daniel Bryan defeated Roman Reigns [w/ Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Randy Orton] by DQ when the heels interfered (18:15); The Usos, The Prime Time Players, Rob Van Dam, R-Truth, Justin Gabriel, Zack Ryder, and Dolph Ziggler all came out and rescued Bryan from another attack and PTP hoisted Bryan on their shoulders as they all led the crowd in a “YES!” chant to end the show.

News + Notes

  • The show opened with new WWE Champion Daniel Bryan who was quickly interrupted by Triple H. Triple H brought out the ref from last night’s match, Scott Armstrong, to the ring and replayed the count he made that gave Bryan the win. Armstrong admitted it was fast then was overheard saying that Triple H was onto them, so Triple H ran with it and stripped Bryan of the WWE Championship.
  • Randy Orton caught up with Triple H & Stephanie McMahon backstage and asked for his title back but Steph told him they needed the evil ruthless Orton from a few years back and if they didn’t they would look for a new face of the WWE. This led Orton into injuring The Miz later in the show.
  • Dusty Rhodes came out and after a brief spiel Stephanie McMahon joined him. She laid out her business proposal: he could get either his son Cody or his son Goldust their job back but not both. When Dusty refused out came both The Shield and The Big Show and Steph said Dusty could choose whether he wanted to be decimated by The Shield or knocked out by Show. Show eventually KO’ed Dusty, and “The American Dream” was carted out via an ambulance soon after.
  • Triple H later fired Scott Armstrong when the latter tried to ask him about what had happened in the ring at the start of the show. Triple H refused to let Armstrong speak, essentially proving that he orchestrated the whole thing to get the belt back off of Bryan.
  • Paul Heyman was wheeled out by Curtis Axel (who then LEFT!) and was joined by Ryback. Heyman said he had no plan going into Night of Champions but thanks to Ryback his life was saved after a savage beating by CM Punk. Ryback got on the mic and said he did it because he hates bullies (nice). Ryback told Heyman that he didn’t need to worry because Punk would never lay his hands on him again and Heyman responded with a kiss on the cheek.
