After an eventful and dare I say near-transcendent WrestleMania, the post-Mania RAW proved to be just as memorable, with new WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan finding unlikely allies, a new Divas Champion crowned, Randy Orton & Batista forced to work as a tag team, teases for new NXT stars, the return of Rob Van Dam, and…The Ultimate Warrior finally getting it and doing Warrior-like things.

Results and notes come courtesy of James Caldwell‘s much more interesting recap/analysis over PWTorch. Videos come from WWE’s YouTube page.

-WWE Signature/Superstars Intro-

Tom Phillips welcome the home audience as Titus O’Neil makes his way out for the opening contest. He’s wearing a WrestleMania XXX basketball jersey. We cut to the announce table as Phillips and Byron Saxton talk about the “Showcase of the Immortals”. O’Neil’s opponent, Zack Ryder, is out next.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Ryder is looking less defeated lately, which is nice. Seeing him come out with that ridiculous hair and “fuck it” flab was getting depressing.

—–

Match #1: Zack Ryder Vs. Titus O’Neil

Ryder starts a “WOO WOO WOO” chant. O’Neil backs Ryder in the corner but misses a cheap shot attempt. Ryder gets the crowd “WOO”-ing as well. Ryder grabs a waistlock then hits a couple of rights. O’Neil sends him into the corner, but Ryder leapfrogs out. Ryder is caught during a backdrop attempt, O’Neil delivering back to back backbreakers before tossing him to the mat like a ragdoll. O’Neil with a short-arm clothesline followed by back to back elbowdrops and a running legdrop. O’Neil drops Ryder with a European uppercut then does his seal thing before choking Ryder against the bottom rope with his knee. O’Neil picks Ryder up then brings him back down with forearms to the chest before applying a chinlock. O’Neil chants his own name as the crowd chants for Ryder. Ryder gets to a vertical base then gets sent back down. O’Neil pats himself on the back as he circles his opponent. O’Neil drops Ryder once again with a right hand. Ryder escapes a slam attempt but his O’Connor Roll attempt is blocked and he’s taken back down to the mat with a shoulderblock. More seal sounds from O’Neil and he misses the elbowdrop. Ryder kicks O’Neil from the apron then gets his knees up during a splash attempt. Ryder dropkicks O’Neil in the back of the head and goes for the Broski Boot, but O’Neil rolls out of the ring instead. Ryder catches O’Neil with a baseball slide and rolls him back into the ring. Ryder climbs to the top but O’Neil knocks him down with a big boot. O’Neil picks Ryder up, sends him into the ropes, then connects with CLASH OF THE TITUS for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Titus O’Neil (4:28)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: O’Neil is sloppy as hell and it shows, but he’s improving little by little. Ryder did what he could to make O’Neil’s offense look good but there’s only so much you can do sometimes. Not too boring of a match but not enough to really get into either. But hey O’Neil’s entrance music is boss so that’s something I guess. Also the short running time of this match means we’re either in for a ton of RAW recaps or a longer second match. I really hope it’s more of the latter but I won’t hold my breath.

Match #2: Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) [w/ El Torito] Vs. Ryback & Curtis Axel

Ryback jaws with the crowd before he locks up with Diego. Ryback backs him into the corner and Axel immediately tags in. Axel with a right to the gut followed by some rights to the skull and a chop against the ropes. Diego reverses an Irish whip and connects with a dropkick. Diego chops Axel in the corner twice then whips Axel into the opposite side. Diego does a “headstand” in the corner then takes Axel down with a headscissors. Diego with a wristlock and a kick to the gut. Fernando tags in and Los Matadores hit a Total Elimination. Fernando covers for 1 but gets rammed into the corner. Ryback tags in but misses a chop. Fernando responds with corner chops of his own. Ryback throws Fernando to the mat and gets in a kick, but Fernando ducks back to back clotheslines and slides under Ryback’s legs. Fernando dropkicks Ryback’s knees sending him into the middle rope. Diego tags back in and Los Matadores hit a double monkey flip out of the corner. Axel tags in and eats a double dropkick. Los Matadores clothesline Ryback out to the floor, then pose in the ring as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Axel drives a knee into the midsection of Diego. Ryback tags in and clubs Diego in the corner before connecting with a scoop slam. Ryback with a splash and a cover for 2. Diego fights back with some strikes, but runs into a gorilla press powerslam. Ryback with a lateral press for the 1…2…kickout. Ryback chokes Diego against the middle rope, then connects with a scoop slam. Ryback tags Axel then hits a second rope splash. Axel follows with a second-rope forearm to the chest on Diego for the 1…2…kickout. Axel applies a chinlock to further wear the Matador down. Diego gets to his feet and rolls Axel up with an inside cradle for the 1…2…kickout. Axel gets to his feet and clubs Diego in the skull, then hits an elbowdrop. Axel whips Diego into the ropes and connects with a dropkick. Ryback tags in as Axel chokes Diego with his boot. Ryback circles his opponent and connects with a standing legdrop for the 1…2…kickout.

Ryback picks Diego up and hits a delayed vertical suplex, walking around the ring before finally dropping him. Ryback jokingly tries to get the crowd cheering then charges at Diego, but he hits nothing but ring post. Axel gets the tag but so does Fernando. Fernando with a running headbutt to the gut followed by another. Axel misses a corner splash and Fernando hits three back suplexes in a row, celebrating with an “OLE!”. Fernando with a springboard spinning senton for the 1…Ryback breaks the count. Torito climbs to the apron and lures Ryback out to the floor. Diego hits Ryback with a springboard senton. Back in the ring Fernando rolls Axel up with an O’Connor Roll for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Los Matadores (7:17 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A fun match. Much better than I was expecting for Superstars. RybAxel getting tricked out of a victory was a decent finish, even if they still look like idiots for losing because a midget in a bull costume distracted them.

Post-Match: Jerry Lawler is standing by with Los Matadores on the interview stage. Fernando says El Torito and Lawler are very much alike because they are both “HORNy”. Wakka wakka. Lawler tells them not to go there, then says he thought he was gonna be interviewing RybAxel but Los Matadores pulled off a tremendous victory. Diego says they like being underdogs and says next time Lawler interviews them they might be WWE Tag Team Champions. Lawler tells Torito he’s a big animal lover, as he loves both bulls and puppies.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Diego was laying on the stereotypical Latin accent on a little thick there, but that was the least of this interview’s problems.

RAW CLIP/MONTAGE: Daniel Bryan confronts The Authority and challenges Triple H for WrestleMania XXX. Triple H is all “LOL NO” and they say he’s not good enough for that contest. Bryan beats up Kane, then gets taken away from ringside by referees and security guards. We then cut to the Batista/Bryan match, which ends with Orton beating up Batista and Bryan getting beaten up by Batista and The Authority.

-WWE Signature/Main Event Intro-

—–

We go to the arena as “ChaChaLaLa” brings out Summer Rae to herald the coming of Fandango for the opening match. Tom Phillips is joined at the announce table by Alex Riley and both guys discuss the “dance battle” between Rae and Emma on Monday. Phillips make sure to mention Rae will be on Total Divas next season. He doesn’t get to finish his whole routine as “I Came to Play” brings out his opponent The Miz. Phillips mentions Miz whining on commentary on Monday about not being featured while Titus O’Neil and Zack Ryder were. Before the match can begin “La Vittoria A Mia” hits bringing out Santino Marella. We segue into a clip from Monday where we see the actual Emma/Summer Rae dance-off. We go back live where Marella gets on the live mic. Marella introduces Emma out to the ring, where she does her snake dance as giant bubbles emerge from the entryway. Emma pops the bubbles as she makes her way down. Rae is not pleased. Emma and Marella embrace after some miscommunication on how to do so and head to the announce table to join in on commentary.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Emma is awesome on NXT and I’m glad to see her get the call-up to the main roster to be Marella’s awkward buddy. They’re going to make a great comedic duo. I also dug the fact that the WWE made the bubbles bigger for her entrance to accommodate the larger area. Full Sail University this ain’t. I don’t know if non-NXT fans dig Emma or not but if you’re on the fence give her a few weeks to grow on you. Happened to me.

Match #1: The Miz Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]

Fandango grabs a side headlock to start. Miz whips Fandango into the ropes and gets floored with a shoulderblock. Miz leapfrogs a running Fandango and drives the knee into the midsection. Miz whips Fandango into the ropes but eats a kick during a backdrop attempt. Fandango chops Miz in the corner but an Irish whip is reversed and Miz hits him with the seated corner clothesline. Miz climbs to the top and follows up with the flying axhandle for a 2-count. Miz takes Fandango to the mat with a side headlock. Fandango gets to his feet and knees his way out of the hold. Fandango sends Miz to the apron but Miz slides under and rolls Fandango up for a no-count. Miz ducks a clothesline and connects with a hip toss, then revs the crowd up. Fandango dodges a running kick and bails to the floor, Rae consoling him. Fandango turns around and eats a jumping baseball slide. Miz does the Emma Dance with Emma (?!?) as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Fandango chops Miz in the corner as we return from commercial. Miz floats over a corner splash attempt, connects with a clothesline, then hits a running kick to the face for a 2-count as Santino makes fun of Miz’s hair. Miz goes into the corner mount and connects with a series of southpaw fists until Fandango pushes him off. Miz heads to the apron and he and Fandango exchange chops. Miz goes for a clothesline but Fandango kicks the arm then sends him shoulder-first to the post. The force sends Miz crashing to the floor and Fandango poses for the fans. Santino calls Fandango “rainbow pants” and tries to start a chance but realizes no one can hear him.

Fandango rolls Miz in and covers for 2. Fandango goes into the full mount and connects with back to back headbutts. Fandango drops back to back knees on the left arm then applies an overhead hammerlock to weaken the wing. Miz gets to his feet and breaks out with a headbutt. Fandango blocks an Irish whip attempt and connects with a dropkick, covering for 2. Fandango goes back to the arm, whipping him shoulder-first into the corner and covering for the 1…2…kickout. Fandango drives the knee into Miz’s arm some more and applies another overhead hammerlock. Miz gets to his feet and flips out of a suplex attempt, catching Fandango with a big boot to the face.

Fandango goes for a move, but Miz hits a misdirection clothesline. Fandango dodges a kneelift but falls prey to the backbreaker/neckbreaker combo and Miz covers for the 1…2…kickout. Miz goes for the Figure Four but Fandango escapes and connects with a hammerlock suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Miz pushes Fandango into the corner but eats an elbow during a splash attempt. Fandango heads to the second rope and Miz pulls him off. He goes for the Figure Four again but Fandango kicks him off shoulder-first into the corner. Fandango rolls him up for the 1…2…kickout. Fandango immediately applies a Fujiawara Armbar. Miz escapes and kicks Fandango off then covers for 1. Fandango hits a sunset flip but Miz rolls through and goes for the Figure Four. Fandango kicks him off and rolls around but he hangs on and finally applies the hold. Fandango struggles for a bit then taps.

Winner [via Submission]: The Miz (8:53 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A dull match overall but to these guys’ credit they did pick it up towards the end. Not much in the way of building Miz’s whole frustration thing that started on Monday unless you consider a pointless C-show match to be a build of some kind. Santino and Emma were entertaining on commentary, though at times it did get almost too distracting.

Post-Match: Emma, Santino, and even Riley do the Emma Dance to The Miz’s theme. The camera focuses on Phillips and Riley as they go into Elimination Chamber hype mode. They focus on the big WWE World Heavyweight Championship match.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: WWE is on a slippery slope with Emma; if they keep trying super hard to make her dance cool it’s going to blow up in their faces.

WWE.COM EXCLUSIVE: Michael Cole sits down with Triple H. Triple H talks about how his job is to make everybody better. Cole brings up the Orton/Christian match scheduled for Smackdown. Triple H says Orton has a lot to prove on Friday, then has his biggest challenge in the pre-EC gauntlet on Monday against John Cena. Triple H calls Monday’s impending main event “epic” like we didn’t just see this for the past two months.

Realeza 2013” hits, bringing out Alberto Del Rio for the next match. Phillips recaps the Batista/Del Rio confrontation on Monday. “Radio” brings out Del Rio’s opponent, Zack Ryder. He seems to have gotten himself in better shape and ditched the blonde-ish mop top.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: This is now two shows in a row with Zack Ryder. Can he make it a trifecta this Friday? If so the world might descend into chaos so start brushing up on your survival skills.

—–

Match #2: Zack Ryder Vs. Alberto Del Rio

The first lockup ends in a stalemate and Ryder asks for Del Rio to come at him, bro. Del Rio kicks the hamstring then takes Ryder down with a series of strikes. Del Rio works him over in the corner then eats a forearm while distracted with the ref. Ryder kicks Del Rio then leapfrogs him from the second rope and follows up with a flapjack for a 2-count. Del Rio comes back with a stun gun then throws Ryder out to the floor. Del Rio grabs Ryder and throws him hard into the barricade by the timekeeper’s area. Del Rio rolls Ryder in and covers for 2, then applies a chinlock while digging his knee into a laying Ryder’s back.

Ryder gets to his feet and escapes via jawbreaker, then runs right into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and Del Rio covers for 2. A “USA!” chant breaks out. HOOOOOOOOOO. Del Rio reapplies the chinlock to further wear Ryder down. Ryder breaks out but Del Rio hits a knee followed by a headbutt. Ryder faceplants Del Rio when he attempts a backdrop, ducks a clothesline, and hits a jumping one of his own. Ryder connects with a seated neckbreaker and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Ryder goes to pick Del Rio up but Del Rio hits him with a double-knee armbreaker. Del Rio signals for the finish but Ryder escapes, hits a forearm in the corner, then connects with the Broski Boot for good measure for the 1…2…kickout. Ryder revs the crowd up and signals for his finisher. Del Rio dodges the Ruff Ryder then drives him to the mat with a knee after trapping him on the second rope. Del Rio superkicks a kneeling Ryder and covers for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Alberto Del Rio (4:56)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Del Rio gets another victory headed into his (I assume) showdown with Batista at Elimination Chamber. Granted it’s a victory against Zack Ryder, someone even I’ve beaten, but still it keeps the wheels spinning. Ryder didn’t look terrible here and even had some parts where he seemed motivated again.

Post-Match: Del Rio poses on the second rope, eyeing the Wrestlemania XXX sign, as a way to show that everyone in the WWE cares about it main event or not, I guess.

Match #3: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Vs. Curtis Axel in a NON-TITLE MATCH

A “Let’s Go Hawks!” chant breaks out in support of Langston. Langston charges at Axel, who hides between the ropes to force the ref to separate them. Axel gets a couple of knees followed by an elbow to the back of the neck. Langston reverses an Irish whip and faceplants Axel, then clotheslines him over the top rope and onto the floor. Axel recovers and reenters the ring, grabbing a waistlock. Langston escapes and applies a wristlock, driving the elbow into the arm for added punishment. Langston connects with a short-arm shoulderblock then wrenches the arm. Langston whips Axel into the corner but eats a boot. Axel tries for a follow-up crossbody but Langston catches him and connects with a backbreaker for 2.

Langston applies an armbar, standing over Axel. Axel grabs Langston’s nose and breaks out with a headbutt and a series of rights. Langston reverses another Irish whip. Axel leapfrogs Langston, then Langston does so to Axel, then takes him down with a clothesline for 2. Axel sends Langston into the middle turnbuckle via drop toehold. Axel rapid-fire stomps Langston in the corner. Langston reverses a corner Irish whip and hits the running shoulder tackle to the midsection, then does so again in the opposite corner. Langston kicks the legs out from Axel twice. Axel catches Langston with a forearm then peppers him with strikes and kicks. Axel hits the ropes and runs into a release overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Axel bails to the floor and Langston paces back and forth, revving the crowd up, as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

We return from the break as Langston hits Axel with a shoulderblock, covering for a 2-count. Langston reapplies the armbar as this match dies a slow death to this viewer. Axel bails to the corner, forcing a ref break. Langston runs back at Axel with a series of strikes until forced away again by the ref. Langston connects with rights to the midsection and blocks Axel’s attempt at a belly-to-belly suplex with one of his own for the 1…2…kickout. Axel bails to the outside then sends Langston into the ring steps when he comes out for further punishment. Axel rolls Langston back in and covers for the 1…2…kickout.

Axel drives the knee into Langston’s back then applies a rear-chinlock. This match is not going to ever end, is it? Langston gets to his feet and rams Axel into the corner to break free. Langston gets a running head start and Axel catches him with a dropkick for the 1…2…kickout. Axel clubs Langston with forearms followed by a series of right hands. Axel rubs his forearm across Langston’s face. Langston fights back with right hands but eats a knee to the face when he attempts a backdrop and Axel covers for the 1…2…kickout. Axel applies an armbar of his own (?!?) then picks Langston up and hits a sidewalk backbreaker. Axel heads to the second rope and goes for a strike but Langston gets the boot up instead.

Langston mounts the comeback, hitting back to back clotheslines. Axel escapes a suplex attempt and goes for his finish but Langston dodges that, hits the belly-to-belly, then follows up with the Warrior Slam. Langston pulls the straps down to signal for the end. Axel escapes the Big Ending attempt and hits the Perfect Plex for the 1…2…KICKOUT. Axel yells at the crowd in frustration then goes for his finisher. Langston escapes and hits the BIG ENDING for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Big E Langston (11:56 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Happy to see Langston pick up non-title victories since secondary champions rarely do so, and his tribute to his former team with his ring attire was classy. That said I could not get into this match at all and for parts of it I thought I was going to nod off. Dreadfully slow, almost like they were just trying to take up TV time. This was not a good Main Event, match or episode, guys.

Post-Match: Langston celebrates as we fade to logo.

‘WWE RAW’ 2/3/14 Results + Notes – Tag Team Title Cage Match, Bryan Vs. Orton, No Punk or Cena

WWE RAW logo

Venue: CenturyLink Center (Omaha, NE)

Commentators: Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & JBL

The Tag Team Titles were defended in a steel cage this week on RAW as champs The New Age Outlaws faced Cody Rhodes & Goldust. Also on the show Daniel Bryan faced WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton in a non-title match, Batista felt the wrath of Alberto Del Rio, and both The Shield and The Wyatt Family saw six-man tag team action en route to their showdown at the Elimination Chamber.

Read on for results and notes from the show, gathered from James Caldwell‘s much more interesting and detailed recap/analysis over at PWTorch.

Match Results + Notes

1. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns) defeated *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston, Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston when Ambrose pinned Langston with the HEADLOCK DRIVER (11:30).

  • The Finish: Reigns was ready to finish the match but Ambrose tagged himself in, hit the Headlock Driver, and took the glory and the victory away from him.
  • Post-Match: Bray Wyatt and The Wyatt Family cut a TitanTron promo on The Shield just as Rollins was trying to prevent a fight between Ambrose and Reigns.

2. Christian defeated Jack Swagger [w/ Antonio Cesaro & Zeb Colter] via pinfall with a sunset flip (5:58).

  • Post-Match: Cesaro and Colter were none too pleased with Swagger losing, and Swagger sold frustration while also bleeding from the mouth.

3. Steel Cage Match: The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) (c) defeated Cody Rhodes & Goldust to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship when Gunn pinned Rhodes with the FAMEASSER (16:10).

  • The Finish: Cody Rhodes went for a moonsault from the top of the cage and sort-of hit Road Dogg with it, but was caught with the Fameasser by Gunn for the loss while recovering from the move.

4. Titus O’Neil defeated Zack Ryder via pinfall with the CLASH OF THE TITUS (2:45).

  • Note: The Miz came to ringside during the match and vented frustration that he wasn’t given a spot on the show to the commentators before leaving in a huff.

  • Note: Kane came out to interfere at the end of the match but Bryan held him off and managed to defeat Orton in the process.
  • Post-Match: Orton and Kane beat down Bryan, leaving the WWE World Heavyweight Champion standing tall at the end of the show.

Segments + Other Notes

-The show opened with Randy Orton promising victory at the Elimination Chamber and Wrestlemania XXX. The Authority (Triple H & Stephanie McMahon) interrupted and announced that from now until the Chamber Orton would face every person involved in that match in a non-title singles match, starting with Daniel Bryan.

Wade Barrett delivered another “Bad News” promo about the Super Bowl, but was then accosted by Jerry Lawler who told him he better not show up next week.

Fandango and Summer Rae made their way out for a contest. Santino Marella made his return and said he didn’t want to have a dance competition against him tonight, instead bringing Emma out from the audience to face Rae in a dance contest. Emma apparently won via applause. If this leads into a repeat of these two’s awesome NXT tag team match then I’m all for it.

Batista came out for a promo but before he could even speak out came Alberto Del Rio. After some verbal jabs Del Rio attacked Batista. Batista fought back and almost hit a Batista Bomb until Del Rio escaped and fled the ring.

Betty White was announced as next week’s special RAW guest host. A few years too late on that one, guys.

Match Results

  1. 3-on-2 Handicap Match: 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre) defeated Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] when Slater pinned Clay (5:48).
  2. Tamina Snuka defeated Aksana via pinfall with a big boot (3:30).
  3. Big E Langston defeated Zack Ryder via pinfall with the BIG ENDING (10:12).

News + Notes

  • The Punk/Ryback rematch at HIAC was made official.

Overall Show Thoughts

  • Three low-quality matches and a bunch of RAW recaps equals an episode of Main Event not really worth watching. HOWEVER this episode also featured 3MB actually winning a match so if you’re into rare moments this is up your alley. You could find a better way to spend an hour though, I promise.

-WWE Signature/Main Event Intro-

Following the pyrotechnics display we pan the crowd as Josh Matthews welcomes the home audience. “Somebody Call My Mama” hits bringing out Tons of Funk for the opening contest, led by The Funkadactyls. Matthews’ broadcast partner, Alex Riley, is tongue-tied because the Funkadactyls are touching butts on the apron. T.O.F. finishes up their entrance and the pyro goes off. Their opponents, 3MB, make their way out second. All three are wrestling this time around since this is apparently a handicap match. A-Ry apparently had shoulder surgery earlier this week but is already back to work. C-show commentary waits for no man.

  • Thoughts: Drew McIntyre is alive and well after all!

Match #1: Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) [w/ The Funkadactyls] Vs. 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre) in a 3-ON-2 HANDICAP MATCH

Clay and Slater start the match off for their respective teams. Clay rushes in and Slater catches him with a right hand. Slater ducks another strike attempt and connects with a quick jab. Slater tries to duck for a third time but Clay grabs him by the hair and slams him to the mat. Clay slams Slater once more then follows up with a terrible-looking T-Bone suplex. Tensai tags in but their double team move is thwarted when Slater hangs on to the ropes. Mahal tags in and takes it right to Tensai but he gets dropped with a shoulderblock. Tensai headbutts Mahal in the corner then connects with a monkey flip. Tensai follows up with a delayed butterfly suplex for a 2-count.

Clay tags back in and Tons of Funk connect with double back elbows off an Irish whip. Clay covers for 2 then tags back out to Tensai. Tensai connects with a headbutt but misses a corner splash and falls victim to a flying knee. McIntyre tags in and hits a corner clothesline followed by a running one-foot dropkick for a 2-count. McIntyre kips up and chokes Tensai against the middle rope. Slater tags in and makes with the jabs in the corner. Tensai fights back with a back elbow and shoves Slater to the mat, but Slater rebounds with a dropkick to the knees for a 2-count. Slater immediately slaps on a rear chinlock to wear his opponent down.

Tensai gets to his feet but Slater connects with repeated right jabs. Slater takes too long to gloat, allowing Tensai to catch him with a right and toss him out of the ring. McIntyre rolls Slater back in but it’s too late as Clay gets the hot tag. Mahal tags in but falls victim to a T-Bone suplex (better this time) followed by a corner splash and a slam to the mat. Clay heads to the second turnbuckle and connects with a splash for the 1…2…McIntyre breaks the count. Slater gets the tag as McIntyre fights with Tensai on the outside. Slater catches Clay with a knee on the apron then follows up with a catapult twisting splash for the 1…2…3! 3MB WINS! 3MB WINNNNNNS!

Winners [via Pinfall]: 3MB (5:48)

  • Match Thoughts: Sure it was a handicap match and sure it’s against a fellow jobber team but guys guys guys 3MB finally won a match! Excuse me while I take a victory lap around my apartment. Oh my god this is what my life has turned into.

Post-Match: 3MB celebrates by taking a bow. My standing ovation commences.

We cut to the announce table where Matthews and Riley talk about the CM Punk/Ryback at Battleground. They hype up the rematch coming at Hell in a Cell.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

Matthews and Riley hype the Bryan/Orton main event at Hell in a Cell which will feature Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee. Aksana makes her way out for the next match, wearing a “Diva” shirt over her wrestling attire. Her opponent, Tamina Snuka, makes her way out second.

  • Thoughts: I do not have high hopes for this match in the slightest but I’m glad to see both Divas get the TV time. Also if you’ll permit me to be a pigheaded man for a second…OMG AKSANA HUMINA HUMINA HUMINA.

—–

Match #2: Aksana Vs. Tamina Snuka

Aksana stops Snuka to take her Diva shirt off, but Snuka attacks her instead. Aksana kicks her off but Snuka fights back with a couple of chops and stomps in the corner. Aksana dodges a corner splash and takes her to the mat with a wristlock. Aksana works over the shoulder and arm then covers for 2. Aksana applies an overhead wristlock as the crowd struggles to figure out who they’re supposed to cheer for. Snuka gets to her feet but Aksana immediately pulls her down to the mat. Aksana follows up with a sidewalk slam then seductively crawls around the ring. Snuka kicks Aksana in the face mid-crawl and takes control. Snuka brings Aksana to the mat with a snapmare and follows up with a running kneedrop for 2. Snuka applies a chinlock to further wear her opponent down.

Aksana gets to her feet and breaks out with elbows and strikes, then follows it up with a neckbreaker for 2. Aksana tries another pinfall with the same result. Aksana hits the ropes but misses a dropkick. Snuka gets to her feet and connects with a gutbuster followed by a big boot for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Tamina Snuka (3:30)

  • Match Thoughts: Yup the match went about as bad as I expected, with the crowd sitting on their hands due to the fact there was no one to cheer for (both were heels and both tried the “babyface in peril” chinlock spots to no avail). Snuka not using the Superfly Splash was also surprising, making her win with the big boot feel sudden. Still happy these two got some TV time and everything but…oof.

RAW Recap: Stephanie McMahon “fires” The Big Show.

—–

Matthews and Riley tease the continuation of The Big Show’s story from RAW later tonight as Zack Ryder makes his way out for the next match. He’s in action next!

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

Matthews puts over the WWE/Susan G. Komen partnership as we return live. Ryder’s opponent, Big E Langston, makes his way out. I wonder how this match is gonna go.

—–

Match #3: Zack Ryder Vs. Big E Langston

Langston uses his power to take the early advantage, gooziling Ryder to the top turnbuckle and slapping him. Ryder gets angry and fights back but runs right into a shoulderblock. Riley and Matthews put over Ryder’s Twitter follower count because that’s literally all he’s good for nowadays. Langston wrenches in a side headlock and connects with a forearm when Ryder tries to break out. Langston reapplies the deep side headlock, bringing Ryder to his knees. Ryder tries again to break out but eats a right hand to the midsection. Ryder leapfrogs a running Langston and ducks a clothesline attempt. Ryder follows up with a flying forearm that sends Langston to the mat, then a dropkick that causes Langston to roll out of the ring. Ryder connects with a jumping baseball slide, and we head to commercial with Langston angrily trying to regroup.

-Commercial Break-

Ryder has Langston in a front chancery as we return from the break. Langston escapes and connects with a strike to the ribs that sends him crumpling to the mat. Langston continues the rib punches in the corner, followed by the running midsection shoulderblock. Ryder crumples to the mat and Langston covers for the 1…2…kickout. Langston picks Ryder up and applies a standing side bearhug. Ryder boxes the ears and breaks the hold, but Langston catches him in a release belly-to-belly suplex for the 1…2…kickout. This match is lasting a lot longer than I expected. Langston with another right hand to the ribs but misses the follow-up running splash.

Ryder mounts the comeback, connecting with the second-rope missile dropkick to the back of Langston’s head. Ryder pumps the fist and connects with the Broski Boot but Langston slides out of the ring to avoid a follow-up. Ryder runs out after him and Langston tosses him into the ropes then hits a massive running clothesline. That was awesome. Langston rolls Ryder in and rams him into the corner. Langston picks Ryder up but Ryder slips out and rolls him up for the 1…2…kickout. Ryder dodges a corner splash and hits a running splash/forearm followed by another. Ryder goes for the hat trick but Langston counters with an STO. Langston gets a running head start and runs him over. Langston pulls the straps down and finishes Ryder off with the BIG ENDING for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Big E Langston (10:12)

  • Match Thoughts: I’ve watched Langston wipe the floor with Ryder many times before so I was more than a little shocked that this one went ten minutes. Unfortunately its super slow pace didn’t justify the extra time, but we did get Langston’s awesome “throw you into the ropes on the outside and follow up with a massive clothesline” spot that I wish I could watch over and over again. It was a cool random bit of offense that I hope becomes a bigger part of his repertoire. Hell I just hope Langston gets a feud soon; the man’s talent is going to waste (*insert “WATCH NXT, DAMMIT!” comment here*).

WWE ‘RAW’ 10/7/13 Results + Notes – D-Bry & The Rhodes Bros. Vs. The Shield, HBK Appears, John Cena’s Return Match Announced

WWE Raw logo

Venue: Consol Energy Arena (Pittsburgh, PA)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

With the WWE Championship still held in abeyance thanks to the antics of The Big Show, this week’s RAW saw the announcement of a match that will finally decide the true champion in three weeks at Hell in a Cell…with a most Showstopping referee to boot. Speaking of Show he would once again reemerge during the main event after being fired earlier in the program and make his final stand. Would he side with Daniel Bryan or would he continue to bow at the whims of the McMahon Family?

Read on for full results and notes from the show, taken from Jason Powell‘s much more detailed report/analysis over at ProWrestling.net.

Match Results

1. Dolph Ziggler defeated Damien Sandow via pinfall with the FAMEASSER (12:15).

2. Natalya, Eva Marie, JoJo Offerman defeated Alicia Fox, Aksana, Rosa Mendes when Natalya forced Mendes to tap to the SHARPSHOOTER (3:20).

3. Los Matadores (Fernando & Diego) [w/ El Torito] defeated 3MB (Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal) [w/ Heath Slater] with their Torture Rack Drop finisher.

  • Post-Match: Slater chased El Torito into the ring but Torito had the last laugh, sending him out to the floor with a hurricanrana.

4. CM Punk R-Truth defeated Ryback & *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Curtis Axel [w/ Paul Heyman] when Truth pinned Axel with a Scissor Kick (12:45).

  • Pre-Match: Heyman cut a promo on CM Punk’s win at Battleground, Ryback and Axel flanked behind him. Punk came out to jab back and Ryback challenged him to come to the ring. R-Truth then made his way out and offered to be Punk’s partner, leading to the tag team match.

5. Randy Orton defeated Kofi Kingston via pinfall with the RKO (13:45).

  • Post-Match: Daniel Bryan attacked Orton during his celebration, taking him out with a suicide dive and raining down all sorts of hurt until he was pulled away by officials and referees.

6. Non-Title Match: Ricardo Rodriguez defeated *World Heavyweight Champion* Alberto Del Rio via pinfall with a roll-up (0:35).

  • Pre-Match: Del Rio visited with Vickie Guerrero, saying he needed a marquee match to show himself off since he’s the only world champion WWE has at the moment. Guerrero brought out Ricardo as his opponent.
  • Notes: Guerrero emerged during the match and announced to Del Rio that he would defend the WHC against John Cena at Hell in a Cell, causing him to be distracted and fall victim to the roll-up of doom by Rodriguez.

7. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] defeated Zack Ryder via pinfall with the TOP ROPE LEGDROP (2:45).

8. The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter] defeated Santino Marella & The Great Khali [w/ Hornswoggle] when Cesaro pinned Khali after the CESARO SWING (3:45).

  • Post-Match: Cesaro trapped Hornswoggle in the Giant/Cesaro Swing until Marella broke it up with the Cobra. Khali then took out Swagger with a BRAIN CHOP to end the altercation with the faces on top.

9. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose and *WWE Tag Team Champions* Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) defeated Daniel Bryan, Cody Rhodes, & Goldust when Rollins pinned Bryan (13:00).

  • Notes: Randy Orton hit Bryan with an RKO, allowing Rollins to pin him for the victory. Triple H stood at ringside for the match to make sure everything was “best for business”.
  • Post-Match: The Shield continued their attack on the babyface team until The Big Show made his way out. Triple H instructed The Shield to attack Show but he shoved them off and cold-cocked Trips with the KO PUNCH. Bryan stood over the fallen body of Triple H and led a “YES!” chant to close the show.

Segments/Notes/Etc.

  • Stephanie McMahon opened the show, bringing out The Big Show to atone for what he did last night at Battleground. Show did no such thing and mocked her husband, causing McMahon to slap him repeatedly and then fire him. Show was unfazed and left with an aura of confidence, shown at the end of the episode when he reemerged and knocked Triple H out with the KO PUNCH.
  • RAW GM Brad Maddox made his way out after the Divas match and apologized for how Battleground ended. He then announced that Daniel Bryan would meet Randy Orton for the WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell, within the structure itself, and it would feature a special guest referee. Three legends made appearances to lead the vote in their favor: Booker T, Bob Backlund, and Shawn Michaels. It’s no surprise that HBK won the fan vote and he will ref Bryan/Orton in three weeks.
  • The Miz was to host a “MizTV” episode with himself as the guest, but out came The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, & Erick Rowan) to break it up. Harper and Rowan went to attack Miz, but Miz escaped all three of them, even getting in some shots at Bray. Bray simply laughed as Miz made his exit to the entrance stage.
  • Announced for Smackdown: R-Truth challenges Curtis Axel for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
  • As previously mentioned in the match results section John Cena will make his way earlier than expected return to the ring at Hell in a Cell to challenge Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship.
  • Rob Van Dam is currently on hiatus following his match at Battleground, the storyline being he needs to get better physically, emotionally, and spiritually. That’s code for “smoke a ton of weed and not destroy the body by wrestling non-stop”.

Jerome’s ‘WWE Main Event’ 10/2/13 Recap + Review – Real Americans vs. Tons of Funk, Axel vs. Ryder, PTP vs. Wyatt Family, Marella vs. Sandow

mainevent

Taped from Baton Rouge, LA

Commentators: Josh Mathews and Alex Riley

This week on Main Event Santino Marella takes on Damien SandowThe Prime Time Players once again face The Wyatt FamilyTons of Funk face The Real Americans, and Curtis Axel is in non-title action against Zack Ryder. Read on for Jerome’s recap and analysis of each match.

*****

Match #1: Santino Marella vs. Damien Sandow

Sandow calling out the fans for being stupid for cheering Marella is one of the better lines I’ve heard from him. Marella chases Sandow out of the ring with a naked Cobra. Not sure if that’s nearly as effective. Some basic wrestling to start. Clothesline by Sandow to block a hip toss. Marella finally gets a series of hip tosses and chases Sandow into the corner. Shoulder blocks by Sandow. Marella walks across the ring. Marella has enough and knees him in the midsection. Russian legsweep by Marella. Knees from Sandow. Out goes Marella.

-Commercial Break-

Marella in a bodyscissors as we come back. Sandow with a shot to the throat. Knee strike across the head. Chinlock.  Sandow drives Marella into the mat. Deposited to the floor. Marella rammed into the apron. Again he goes. Sandow sets him up and delivers an elbow strike. To the chinlock. Sandow reverses a suplex and ends up on top. Marella rammed into the top turnbuckle. Marella begins no-selling. He makes Ultimate Warrior like movements… and then collapses. Elbow of disdain. Forearm sends Marella down. Second one blocked. Back drop driver by Marella. Blind charge misses. Marella with right hands. Splits. Hip toss. Saluting headbutt. Out comes the Cobra. Sandow exits the ring. Sandow rips it off. Kick to the gut and Silencer. Sandow wins.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Damien Sandow/7:53 shown/**

  • Jerome’s Analysis: Santino is always good for a laugh, and Sandow didn’t lose. Winner!

—–

-Triple H interview. Guy sure does talk a lot.

—–

Match #2: The Prime Time Players (Titus O’Neill and Darren Young) vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper and Erick Rowan)

Young with a forearm, kick, and headbutt to Harper. Young is hesitant as Rowan enters the ring and tags in O’Neill. Double team on the large Rowan. Double shoulder tackle. Young cover but not even a count. Rowan with a standing leg lariat. Young slammed into the top turnbuckle. Series of clubbering blows by Harper. One final shot sends Young down. Slingshot into the middle turnbuckle. Rowan with a knee. Elbow drop. Front facelock by Harper. Young enziguri and hot tag to O’Neill. Shoulder block for Harper. Rowan sent off the apron. Whip and splash on Harper. He barks. Boot to Harper. Powerslam gets two. Young works over Rowan with forearms. Rowan tosses Young over. O’Neill tosses Rowan out. Harper gets a twisting lariat and picks up the victory.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: The Wyatt Family/4:20/*1/2

  • Jerome’s Analysis: Too short to really mean much, but the Wyatts continue to do what they can in the time given. Because of the “Corporation” angle, it’s really tough to get other heels over or even concentrate on them, so unfortunately, they’re in treading water territory.

—–

Preview of Battleground, a PPV that may be the least bought in history.

  • Editor’s Note: As long as December to Disemember still exists (and it will because time travel is impossible) then I think every other WWE PPV is safe from being the “least-bought”).

—–

Match #3: Zack Ryder Vs. *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Curtis Axel [w/ Paul Heyman] in a NON-TITLE MATCH

SOMEONE LET ZACK RYDER ON TV? OH MAN, SOMEONE IS GETTING FIRED! Quick clothesline by Ryder. Roll-up for two. He said he was this close, bro. Yeah, and then he got his knees cut out from under him. Clothesline to the back of the head by Axel. Ryder sent hard into the top turnbuckle. Snapmare and neck snap. Dropkick. Axel with an elbow off the middle rope. Ryder with a facebuster. Leaping clothesline. Ryder sent into the corner. Double knees and a middle rope missile dropkick. Dropkick to the back of the head. Broski Boot (which is merely a face wash). Axel holds onto the bottom rope. Axel with a kick. Neckbreaker gets three.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Curtis Axel/3:50/*

  • Jerome’s Analysis: I’m surprised Ryder lasted as long as he did. Axel is perfectly acceptable in the ring, but man, he just doesn’t do anything for me as a character.

—–

-Raw recap. Man, Triple H likes to talk. I also love how he went inside baseball on the Rhodes family and left behind a group of fans whose parents probably weren’t even born (or were really young at the very least) during Dusty Rhodes’ prime.

—–

Match #4: The Real Americans (Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger) [w/ Zeb Colter] vs. Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay and Tensai)

Swagger with right hands on Clay. Clay with a trio of bodyslam. Exploder. Cover for two. Swagger sent into the corner. Swagger with a chop block on Clay. Cesaro with a series of boots. Cesaro Swing on Clay. What a freaking beast. Front facelock. Swagger comes in the ring. Clay fights out of the corner. Clotheslines by Swagger. Second rope splash. Cesaro leap frogs his partner and hits a double stomp. Clay tosses Swagger over his head. Tensai with right hands on Cesaro. Big shoulder tackle. Cannonball senton. Cover for two. Clay knocks Swagger off. Double charge by Tons of Funk. Clay pulled out of the ring by Swagger. Swagger knocked off the apron. Cesaro hits the The Neutralizer on Tensai to get three.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: The Real Americans/4:34/*

  • Jerome’s Analysis: Cesaro is a machine. That’s all that matters.

WWE ‘RAW’ 9/30/13 Results + Notes – Final Battleground Hype, Triple H Makes Rhodes Family an Offer, Los Matadores Debut, D-Bry and Randy Orton Have a Heart to Heart

WWE Raw logo

Venue: Mississippi Coast Coliseum (Biloxi, MS)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

With a week to go until their first of two October PPVs, Battleground, WWE went into full salesmanship mode this week on RAW adding new matches (including one featuring the Brothers Rhodes) and continuing the hype for others (Punk/Ryback, Orton/Bryan). And also, after weeks of hype, the “mysterious” tag team of Los Matadores finally made their in-ring debut…complete with a midget in a bull costume. Yup.

While there is no review this week (I ended up shutting the show off an hour and change in to do literally anything else), read on for full results and notes from the show culled from Chris Shore‘s much more detailed report/analysis over at ProWrestling.net.

MATCH RESULTS

1. CM Punk defeated Big E Langston via pinfall with the GTS (9:01).

  • Notes: CM Punk opened the show by cutting a promo hyping his match against Ryback this Sunday. He tried to goad Heyman and his “Guys” to an early fight but GM Brad Maddox came out to talk him out of it. Big E Langston then made his way out and attacked Punk, setting up this opening contest.

2. Kofi Kingston defeated Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] via pinfall with TROUBLE IN PARADISE (3:00).

  • Post-Match: Bray Wyatt came out and cut a promo while in his rocking chair, saying he now knew what he had to do and that everyone would fall. No attack or anything, just ominous words.

3. Los Matadores (Fernando & Diego) [w/ El Torito] defeated 3MB (Heath Slater & Jinder Mahalvia pinfall with a combo slam/double Angle Slam of sorts (3:59).

  • Notes: The man behind the El Torito mask/ridiculous body suit is luchador mini Masacarita Dorada. Check out some clips of his work by clicking here.

4. Non-Title Match: R-Truth defeated *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Curtis Axel [w/ Paul Heyman] via pinfall with the LIE DETECTOR (4:22).

  • Notes: CM Punk’s music hit causing Axel to be distracted and allowing Truth to take the advantage and score a pinfall victory. The Mississippi crowd also seemed more into R-Truth than most WWE fans and that’s despite the fact he botched the hell out of his entrance rap; it was way off tempo with his theme song. This is pretty much when I started tuning out and went about doing other things with my time.

5. Brie Bella [w/ Nikki Bella] defeated Alicia Fox via pinfall with an X-Factor (3:17).

  • Notes: WWE played off the engagement between Brie and Daniel Bryan throughout the show, showing a video about their romance as well as featuring a backstage segment where Randy Orton lobbied threats to Brie about her fiance. It also would come into effect for the show-ending segment, which will be discussed in the next part of this coverage.

6. Non-Title Match: *World Heavyweight Champion* Alberto Del Rio defeated Zack Ryder via submission with the CROSS ARMBREAKER (4:06).

7. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose and *WWE Tag Team Champions* Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) defeated Dolph Ziggler The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) when Reigns pinned Ziggler following a SPEAR (12:02).

8. Santino Marella [w/ The Great Khali Hornswoggle] defeated Antonio Cesaro [w/ Jack Swagger Zeb Colter] via pinfall with a roll-up (2:47).

NEWS + NOTES

Triple H and Stephanie McMahon invited The Rhodes Family (Dusty, Goldust, and Cody) out to the ring and offered a business proposition: if Cody and Goldust (who was in a suit and the makeup) can beat Rollins & Reigns of The Shield this Sunday at Battleground, they can have their jobs back. Dusty then got fresh with Triple H, leading to The Shield commencing an attack, including some shots at Dusty as well.

-In an interview with Renee Young, the downtrodden giant The Big Show said he couldn’t take anymore, cocked his fist, and promised to knock Triple H the hell out. Cameras later caught up to Show, who was being threatened with arrest by local police. Stephanie McMahon came in and prevented it because he had a big mortgage payment due. She left with the cops and Show punched a poster of the new Triple H DVD in frustration.

Paul Heyman “proposed” to Ryback, asking if he’d be the latest Paul Heyman guy, but the music of CM Punk broke the proceedings up. Punk made his way through the audience then keeled over with a knee injury. Trainers and refs checked on him, as did a curious Heyman, which allowed Punk to pull out a kendo stick from under the knee and whack Heyman with it. Ryback pulled Heyman away, leaving Curtis Axel to eat a GTS from Punk on the entrance stage.

-Three matches were announced for Battleground. They are as follows:

  1. The Rhodes Boys (Cody Rhodes & Goldust) [w/ Dusty Rhodes] Vs. *WWE Tag Team Champions* The Shield (Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns); if The Rhodes’ win they get their jobs back.
  2. AJ Lee (c) Vs. Brie Bella for the WWE Divas Championship.
  3. Battleground Kick-Off (Pre-Show): Dolph Ziggler Vs. Damien Sandow

-The show ended with a face-to-face between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan, mediated by Jerry Lawler. The two traded barbs back and forth to build their Battleground match then a brawl broke out once Orton brought up Bryan’s new fiancee. Orton eventually got the advantage and hit the hanging DDT on the floor as Brie Bella watched, then finished him off with an RKO through the announce table. Brie tended to her husband-to-be to end the show and create the final sell for Battleground.

Mike’s ‘WWE Smackdown’ 9/27/13 Results + Review – Randy Orton Defeats The Miz, Dolph Ziggler Wins U.S. Title Match, AJ Lee Retains, RVD Saves R-Truth, and The Shield Rides Again

WWE Smackdown

Venue: BMO Harris Bradley Center (Milwaukee, WI)

Commentators: Michael Cole & JBL

This week on Smackdown The Miz attempted to get revenge on Randy Orton for the hometown attack on RAW one week ago, Dolph Ziggler took on Dean Ambrose for the WWE U.S. Championship, and Alberto Del Rio took on R-Truth in non-title action.

Read on for results, notes, and Mike’s thoughts on the show.

—–

Match Results

  1. Non-Title Match: *World Heavyweight Champion* Alberto Del Rio defeated R-Truth via pinfall following a superkick.
  2. The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter] defeated The Prime Time Players (Darren Young & Titus O’Neil) when Swagger made Young tap to the PATRIOT LOCK.
  3. Bray Wyatt [w/ Luke Harper & Erick Rowan] defeated Zack Ryder via pinfall with SISTER ABIGAIL.
  4. Dolph Ziggler [w/ Kofi Kingston Rob Van Dam] and Dean Ambrose (c) [w/ *WWE Tag Team Champions* Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns] ended in a no-contest when Rollins and Reigns interfered; Ambrose retained the WWE U.S. Championship.
  5. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose and *WWE Tag Team Champions* Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) defeated Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, & Rob Van Dam [w/ Ricardo Rodriguez] when Seth Rollins pinned Kofi Kingston following a BLACKOUT.
  6. Non-Title Match: *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee [w/ Tamina Snuka] defeated Cameron [w/ Naomi] via pinfall with the SHINING WIZARD.
  7. Santino Marella [w/ The Great Khali & Hornswoggle] defeated Heath Slater [w/ Jinder Mahal & Drew McIntyre] via pinfall with the COBRA.
  8. Randy Orton defeated The Miz via pinfall with the RKO.

News + Notes

  • Triple H opened the show, justifying his actions over the past month and trying to quell any rumors of “favortism”. The Miz interrupted looking for vengeance after he was knocked out by The Big Show this past Monday. In order to cool things down Triple H booked Miz in the main event against Randy Orton, the man who nearly crippled him in front of his hometown crowd two weeks ago on RAW.
  • The U.S. Championship match devolved into a donnybrook with all six men brawling, so Triple H came out and made it a six-man tag team match.
  • Renee Young interviewed The Big Show, who said he was a mess because the position he’s been put in has made him a pariah in the locker room. Triple H came in and essentially brushed off Show’s sadness to further keep that storyline going.
  • The Great Khali and Jinder Mahal both played flutes in an effort to “charm” Santino Marella‘s cobra arm. Eventually Khali won it and Marella beat Heath Slater. This really happened (VIDEO PROOF).

Overall Show Thoughts

Eh. I’m not particularly pleased with how the build-up to Battleground has developed. The stories feel like warmed over plots from last month. Even though the WWE wants to extend the Bryan/Orton feud for as along as possible the reality is that they should be making a valiant effort to avoid having us see through the facade. Further, they are having the same matches not only every week but every show. Take Dolph Ziggler vs Ambrose as an example. How many times are we going to see Dolph fail to capture the title? How long is he going to be “buried” for some off-hand comment he made around SummerslamI have been roundly disappointed with how the WWE has executed this “New Corporation” angle and I do wish they would incorporate it into the entire card rather than reserving it for the main event. Sure, they’ve tried to do this, but I don’t get the sense that it’s really a big deal outside of the mid-card and up. The Real Americans could be corporate lackeys, for example, and they’re just off doing their own thing.

The involvement of Stephanie McMahon in the Divas division is as harmful to the talent as it is absurd. The booking of this main event between Orton and Miz was a complete no-sell of Orton’s beat down of The Miz on RAW. And lest we forget, the show opened with ANOTHER painfully long Triple H promo and the first match wasn’t until after the first commercial break. Lastly, I still hate Alberto Del Rio and his match with R-Truth was a crappier version of their match on Monday. Mmmmmmm, leftovers.
