Jon’s NXT 6/5/14 Results + Review – Neville Vs. Gabriel, Bayley Vs. Charlotte

NXT Logo

Commentators: Tom Phillips, William Regal, & Byron Saxton

NXT Champion Adrian Neville main events this week’s episode in a non-title contest against Justin Gabriel. Also on the show Bayley takes on new Women’s Champion Charlotte, the team of Jason Jordan & Tye Dillinger resurfaces, and Tyler Breeze debuts a new music video centered on, who else, himself.

Match Results

  1. Mojo Rawley defeated Aiden English via pinfall with Hyperdrive (2:48). [NR]
  2. Non-Title: *NXT Women’s Champion* Charlotte [w/ Sasha Banks] defeated Bayley via pinfall with Bow Down to the Queen (4:16). [*1/2]
  3. Jason Jordan & Tye Dillinger defeated Stuart Cumberland & Phillip Ghouljar(sp?) when Jordan pinned Ghouljar with the Jordan Slam (5:54). [*3/4]
  4. Non-Title: *NXT Champion* Adrian Neville defeated Justin Gabriel via pinfall with the Red Arrow (7:29 shown). [**1/2]

News + Notes

  • Devin Taylor interviewed Natalya backstage, who said she would always have her husband Tyson Kidd‘s back and that everyone handles their losses differently.
  • Summer Rae returned during the Bayley/Charlotte match, much to the chagrin of the latter. The three BFFs eventually got on the same page and attacked Bayley after the match until Paige and Emma ran out to make the save.
  • Jason Jordan & Tye Dillinger cut a backstage comedy promo trying to sing each other’s names or whatever. Okay.
  • CJ Parker was shown in the audience holding up a “May the Forest Be With You” activist sign.
  • Tyler Breeze introduced the world premiere of his music video, “#MMMGoregeous”.
  • A video played highlighting Bo Dallas‘s NXT run, complete with excellently lame 80s-sounding song.
  • Tyson Kidd came out at the conclusion of Neville/Gabriel and apologized for his reaction last week. He then challenged Neville to a rematch next week which Neville accepted. They shook hands and Neville told him it was his last chance.

REVIEW

The Matches

  • RAWLEY VS. ENGLISH: Rawley looked dead tired by the end of this match and it wasn’t even three minutes long. That’s Batista-worthy. This match didn’t feel all that different from their other one a few weeks back but admittedly Rawley looked a little better in the ring minus the panting. English seems to back to job status which he had before the singing gimmick. He’s good at being a tackling dummy though so it’s not a terrible role for him. (NR)
  • BAYLEY VS. CHARLOTTE: Blah match with Bayley’s offense looking pretty weak and ineffectual. Charlotte mocking Bayley’s slip and slide thing with one of her own was funny though and the commentary was spot-on with Regal putting over the “Figure Four Headscissors” very well. Summer Rae’s return was surprising as I thought she was still filming that movie no one’s going to watch but she’s a welcome return. Sewing seeds for a feud with Charlotte. (*1/2)
  • JJ & TD VS. GHOULJAR & CUMBERLAND: A squash match that went on way too long for my tastes. The slower moments did not do a great job of highlighting NXT’s new hotness of a tag team and honestly this one felt way less intense and interesting than their debut as a tag team awhile back. Ghouljar almost breaking his neck off a backdrop was horrifying to boot. At the least the commentary was entertaining enough to get me through this. (*3/4)
  • NEVILLE VS. GABRIEL: A good match outside of some timing issues but I couldn’t help but notice that Neville was facing the likely embodiment of his main roster career in a few years. Could easily see Neville get the Gabriel spot once he’s called up to the main roster which will be great for my Superstars reviews but bad for him. Still though this was a fun and evenly-contested matchup and it’s nice to have an NXT Champion who’s matches are actually fun to watch. At least for me anyway I know others disagree pretty wholeheartedly. (**1/2)

Odds + Ends

  • Welcome back Summer Rae, I have missed you way more than I thought I was going to.
  • Jason Jordan & Tye Dillinger‘s backstage promo wasn’t funny but at least NXT remembered that team exists now that Kalisto & El Local are probably already done.
  • I finally get all the nice things people have been saying about Tyler Breeze. Between his match with Sami Zayn last week and the awesome music video he debuted I’m on the bandwagon.
  • The song in the Bo Dallas video package might even be better than Tyler Breeze’s entrance theme.
  • What is going on with Justin Gabriel‘s wrestling attire? It’s like he wants no one to take him seriously.
  • Nice of Justin Gabriel to patiently stand there and wait for the hurricanrana.
  • Tyson Kidd is already dressed and ready to go for next week’s match. At least pretend these shows take place on different nights!

Overall Show Thoughts

  • Like last time the first NXT episode following a 2 hour special was a bit of a comedown, but there was a lot of good here between the return of Summer Rae, the Bo Dallas video, the main event, and especially Tyler Breeze’s music video. Worthwhile edition of the show that set up next week’s main event simply and effectively so give it a shot if you have the time.

Jerome’s WWE SMACKDOWN 5/23/14 Results + Review – Usos vs. Wyatt Family, Batista vs. Dolph Ziggler

WWE Smackdown

Venue: O2 Arena (London, England)

Commentators: Michael Cole & JBL

Match Results

1.  Batista defeats Dolph Ziggler by pinfall in a no disqualification match with a spear. 12:00)[***1/4]

2. The Funkadactyls (Naomi and Cameron) defeated Nikki Bella and Eva Marie by roll-up. Summer Raw served as special guest referee. (1:59) [*1/2

3.  Bo Dallas defeated Sin Cara  with a springboard bulldog(3:41) [*1/2]

4.    Sheamus (WWE United States Champion) defeated Alberto Del Rio by disqualification .(4:00) [*]

5.    (The Usos (Jimmy and Jay Uso w/John Cena) (WWE Tag Team Champions) defeated The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper and Erick Rowan w/Bray Wyatt) by disqualification. (11:00 shown) [**1/2]

News + Notes

  • Jimmy Hart introduced Hulk Hogan, the hose of this edition of Smackdown. Hogan at least got the name of the city and venue right this time as opposed to what happened at Wrestlemania. Hogan promotes Legend’s House on WWE Network but says Smackdown is about looking to the future. He mentions Wrestlemania and then leaves. When you’ve got 1000 hours of television, you need someone to kill time. That’s what Hogan’s function was here.
  • After their match was over, Batista powerbombed Ziggler for fun. Also, his beard is getting pretty mighty.
  • Summer Rae fast counted Eva Marie and is apparently hated by every diva.
  • Bo Dallas made his WWE redebut. He behaves like his usual goofy self in a prematch promo and reminds me a lot of early Kurt Angle. After the match, Dallas helped Sin Cara up and told him to believe. This angle will not play on WWE Raw or Smackdown.
  • Michael Cole interviewed Paige about her title victory. She talks about how much it meant to win the Diva’s Championship. She’s got great poise when talking. I just hope WWE actually lets her wrestle in a competent fashion.
  • Bray Wyatt cut an awesome promo about his last man standing match with John Cena at Payback. Seriously, he’s growing into this character and becoming one of the top stars in the company, and the potential hasn’t even been scratched yet. He’s got such a command of his character and the crowd. He calls the Usos pawns in a nice moment.  He ends by singing that famous song.
  • Paul Heyman and Cesaro joined Michael Cole and JBL. Cesaro attacked Sheamus to cause a disqualification and ended with a Neuralizer and shaking Sheamus’s hand.
  • Vickie Guerrero did some talking. Adam Rose interrupted  and used the line about being a lemon or Rosebud. I have no idea whether I’m supposed to cheer or boo this guy. This actually goes back to WWE’s problem from years ago when they threw out a bunch of gimmicks instead of developing characters. Big difference.
  • Usos actually get a chance to speak and talk about family. John Cena came out, made jokes, and did the chest thumping exercise. Six months AFTER Wolf of Wall Street came out.
  • The crowd sweetening is blatantly obvious and borderline embarrassing. Almost as bad as the announcers.

The Matches

BATISTA VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER- Smackdown is apparently a parallel universe where Ziggler isn’t a complete jobber. This was a bit of a preview for the no holds barred six man tag between Evolution and The Shield. Pretty physical match as they spent a great deal of time brawling on the outside. Then they took turns using a chair. Ziggler pretty much wore Batista out with the chair in fact. Ziggler was allowed to show a ton of aggression and got in tons of offense against a main eventer. Hopefully, this is a positive sign for him even in a loss. Ziggler low blowed Batista in a turnaround from last week. Ziggler caught his leg trying to fameass Batista into the stairs.

NIKKI BELLA AND EVA MARIE VS. THE FUNKADACTYLS (NAOMI AND CAMERON)- The announcers spend more time discussingTotal Divasthan actually calling the match.Rae counts a fast three. So on Raw she comes back to get back at Layla and Fandango after being scorned. Here she’s a heel. Oy vey.

BO DALLAS VS. SIN CARA- Dallas controls much of the match with basic stuff. I just don’t see a lot of upside with him. Maybe that will change, but he needs a few years on the independent scene to hone the character and really improve in the ring. Sin Cara actually got some decent enough offense in,, but of course he wasn’t winning.

SHEAMUS VS. ALBERTO DEL RIO- Del Rio started the match off quickly after a Cesaro distraction. Sheamus came back and even came off the middle rope with a knee strike. Cesaro tried to cheap shot Sheamyus and failed.

THE USOS VS. THE WYATT FAMILY- There have been a number of six man tags, but this is a nice way to get the Usos a chance to showcase themselves in the main event of a television show. Harper had some great chemistry with Jimmy and Jay. Rowan… he sure was in the match. Fans still chant for John Cena at ringside, but what can you do? Cena did a great job getting the crowd  into the match before the hot tag. Fun exchange at the end as we saw a boot, superkick and tope dive. Who says WWE doesn’t embrace the indies? Wyatt shoves Jimmy Uso to caue the disqualification. Cena hits an AA on Rowan.  Pretty fun match until the main event.

 Overall Show Thoughts

Definitely a B level show with two matches ending in a disqualification and hinting at further issues down the road. Ziggler and Batista was definitely worth checking out as they got time and a chance to get physical. I liked the Wyatt promo, but it’s nothing that hasn’t been said a bunch of times before and becomes less effective when Cole regurgitates information.

‘WWE RAW’ 3/17/14 Results + Notes – Another WrestleMania XXX Shakeup, Triple H Responds to Daniel Bryan, Cena Speaks on Wyatt, The Shield Switch Sides

WWE RAW logo

Venue: AT&T Center (San Antonio, TX)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

One week after agreeing to face Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania XXX, Triple H responds to the events that transpired the only way he knows how: violence. But before that he has an announcement concerning the main event for the “Showcase of the Immortals” that shakes things up some more. Also on the show The Shield switch their allegiance, The Usos take on The Real Americans in non-title action, Paul Heyman continues his Don King-like sell of Brock Lesnar’s impending meeting with The Undertaker, and John Cena admits that he fears Bray Wyatt.

Results and notes are gathered from James Caldwell‘s much more detailed recap/analysis over at PWTorch.

MATCH RESULTS/NOTES

1. Non-Title Match: The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter] defeated *WWE Tag Team Champions* The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) when Cesaro pinned Jey with THE NEUTRALIZER (12:20).

  • Note: No sign of dissension this week between The Real Americans, as it was explained that Zeb Colter had been spending time getting both men back on the same page.

2. Sheamus [w/ Hornswoggle] defeated Titus O’Neil via pinfall with the BROGUE KICK (4:07).

  • Before the Match: Hornswoggle returned, handing out gifts to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. He was interrupted by Wade Barrett who gave some BAD NEWS about the holiday (people are gonna vomit and make bad decisions due to too much alcohol). Sheamus then made his way out in an Irish rugby jersey and Hornswoggle joined him at ringside in Irish solidarity.
  • Note: Christian sat in on commentary for the match.
  • Post-Match: Renee Young interviewed Sheamus in the ring. Sheamus announced he would be participating in the Andre The Giant Battle Royal at WrestleMania XXX. Christian attacked Sheamus afterwards and laid him out with an UNPRETTIER on the floor.

3. Non-Title No DQ Match: Daniel Bryan defeated *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton via pinfall (14:28).

  • The Finish: Batista came out and speared Orton, then Bryan dropped him off the apron with a dropkick and covered Orton for the victory.
  • Post-Match: Batista gave Orton a BATISTA BOMB.

4. Goldust [w/ Cody Rhodes] defeated Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] via pinfall with the FINAL CUT (5:10).

5. The Funkadactyls (Cameron & Naomi) defeated *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee Tamina Snuka when Naomi pinned Lee (3:40).

  • Notes: This was Naomi’s first match since her eye injury, and she sported an eyepatch during the contest. The Bella Twins sat in on commentary.
  • Post-Match: Lee shoved Snuka, and Snuka shoved back but they just stared each other down after to end the segment.

6. The Big Show, Dolph Ziggler, Mark Henry, & *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E defeated Damien Sandow, Ryback, Curtis Axel, Alberto Del Rio when Show pinned Sandow with a CHOKESLAM (11:57).

  • Note: This was a match to help hype the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania XXX.

7. Bray Wyatt [w/ Luke Harper & Erick Rowan] defeated Kofi Kingston via pinfall with SISTER ABIGAIL (2:55).

SEGMENTS/NOTES

Triple H opened the show, saying he would end the Yes! Movement at WrestleMania XXX and wanted to talk to Daniel Bryan face to face later. He was interrupted by both Batista and Randy Orton who protested the fact that Daniel Bryan would get put into the main event if he won against Triple H. Triple H announced that Orton would face Bryan in a No-DQ match later in the show. Trips then made a big WrestleMania XXX announcement: if he beats Bryan in their match then he will be inserted into the Batista/Orton main event, so either way the biggest show of the year will end up being a triple threat match. Batista was pissed and Orton dropped him with an RKO before posing to end the segment.

John Cena came out to talk about The Wyatt Family. He admitted that he was scared of Bray Wyatt then said at WrestleMania XXX he would be fighting for his own legacy. Wyatt interrupted via TitanTron, sporting a Cena t-shirt, who said he doesn’t care if he dies as long as everyone sees Cena the way he sees him at the end of their match.

Paul Heyman cut another promo about The Undertaker on behalf of his client Brock Lesnar. It was announced later in the show that Taker will be on Main Event to respond.

Kane made his way to the ring and said after some investigating he found out that Jerry Lawler was the one who helped Daniel Bryan execute the “OccupyRAW” movement last week. Lawler plead innocence and refused to enter the ring when Kane asked, so Kane then called out The Shield to administer justice. Instead of attacking Lawler, however, The Shield attacked Kane instead, dropping him with a Triple Powerbomb and effectively turning face.

Mr. T was officially announced as the latest inductee into the WWE Hall Of Fame.

Triple H came out for the final segment and introduced Daniel Bryan to the ring. Triple H told Bryan that everything that has happened since Summerslam hasn’t been personal, it was about what was best for the WWE. However what Bryan did last week “crossed the line” and now he had to shut down the Yes! Movement come WrestleMania XXX. Triple H then told Bryan he has at least earned his respect. Stephanie McMahon then made her way out and said what Bryan did last week was illegal and was formally pressing charges. She brought out police officers, who cuffed Bryan. Triple H then said he didn’t want any of this…but they WEREN’T REAL COPS ANYWAY. Triple H then said he was looking forward to this, and began his savage attack on Bryan which included smashing his head against the steel post with a chair, all the while Steph watched with glee. Triple H finished Bryan with a Pedigree and he and his wife stood tall over the fallen Bryan to end the episode.

  • Notes: Kane tried to get The Shield to interfere, but they refused to do so.
  • Post-Match: Kane tried to chokeslam Rollins, but Reigns flattened him with a spear. The Shield stood tall to end the episode.

SEGMENTS/NOTES

Jon’s ‘WWE Superstars’ 3/13/14 Recap + Review – Cara Vs. Del Rio, Ziggler Vs. Fandango

wwe superstars logo

Commentators: Tom Phillips & Byron Saxton

Alberto Del Rio gets demoted to Superstars duty this week, taking on Sin Cara and continuing their neverending but not really promoted rivalry. Also on the show Dolph Ziggler goes one-on-one with dancing maven Fandango.

Match Results

  1. Alberto Del Rio defeated Sin Cara via pinfall with a superkick to the temple (4:16) [**].
  2. Dolph Ziggler defeated Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] via pinfall with the ZIG ZAG (5:53 shown) [**1/2].

*****

-WWE Signature/Superstars Intro-

—–

Sin Cara makes his way out for the opening contest as Tom Phillips welcomes the home audience. Cut to the announce table where Phillips and Byron Saxton talk about WrestleMania XXX. Cara’s opponent, Alberto Del Rio, makes his way out second. Poor guy, slumming it on the D-show. His demotion is my gainmotion.

—–

Match #1: Sin Cara Vs. Alberto Del Rio

Del Rio slaps on a side headlock as the mood lighting kicks in. Cara whips Del Rio into the ropes and gets taken down with a shoulderblock. Cara goes for a leapfrog but Del Rio catches him with a right hand. Del Rio rapid-fire stomps Cara until the ref forces him to stop. Del Rio sends Cara into the corner, but Cara catches him with a float-over headscissors takedown followed by a dropkick that sends him to the floor. Cara takes flight and hits Del Rio with a tope suicida then sends him face-first into the ring frame. Del Rio rolls in and Cara catches him with a slingshot corner dropkick, covering for a 2-count. Cara gets his feet up during a corner splash attempt but Del Rio catches them, spins him around, then stomps him down to the mat. Del Rio with a snap suplex followed by a lateral press for a 2-count.

Del Rio applies a chinlock to further wear Cara down. Cara escapes but runs right into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Del Rio clutches his ribs and covers for a 1-count. Back to the chinlock for Del Rio. Cara breaks out but Del Rio backs him into the corner and delivers some midsection shoulder strikes. Cara gets an elbow up during a splash attempt and follows up with a second-rope tornado DDT. Both men are down. Cara hits a tilt-a-whirl headscissors followed by a back handspring elbow, covering for the 1…2…kickout. Cara heads to the apron, dodges Del Rio, and kicks him in the face. Cara climbs to the top but misses the Senton. He rolls through but Del Rio catches him with a side kick to the temple for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Alberto Del Rio (4:16)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Not a standout match as these two were just going through their usual motions, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Lots of talk about Cara’s role in the Scooby Doo movie; what’s the over/under he disappears after the movie has been out for awhile? (**)

Summer Rae heralds the coming of Fandango for the second match of the show. His opponent, Dolph Ziggler, is out second.

Match #2: Dolph Ziggler Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]

The pro-crowd Ziggler chants for him as the bell rings. Fandango with a side headlock and a shouldertackle off an Irish whip. Fandango does a little “dancing”, and Ziggler stares at him in disbelief as he gets back to his feet. Ziggler with a waistlock and Fandango elbows out. Ziggler ducks a clothesline after being whipped in the ropes, then ducks another, and hits a dropkick. He charges but Fandango backdrops him over the top and onto the floor as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Fandango has Ziggler in a chinlock as we return from the break. He tries to break out but Fandango hits him with a knee. Ziggler flips out of a suplex attempt and charges but Fandango gets in another knee, turning him inside out. Fandango chokes Ziggler on the bottom rope then Rae slaps him in the face as the ref gets distracted. Fandango with a right hand to the back of the head. He pulls Ziggler halfway out of the ring and drives an elbow to the sternum. Fandango rolls in to cover but he’s too close to the ropes. Fandango hammer throws Ziggler into the corner, then covers for the 1…2…kickout. Fandango slaps on another chinlock and the crowd chants his name.

Ziggler escapes the hold but eats a spinning heel kick and Fandango covers for the 1…2…kickout. Fandango climbs to the top but Ziggler ducks under and attacks him with a flurry of rights. Ziggler with rapid-fire rights in the corner mount followed by a neckbreaker for the 1…2…kickout. Rae panics at ringside. Fandango dodges the fameasser and rolls Ziggler up for the 1…2…Ziggler kicks out and hits the Fameasser this time for the 1…2…kickout. Ziggler goes for the Zig Zag but Fandango brushes him off and hits a Michinoku Driver for the 1…2…kickout. Fandango jaws at Ziggler, and Ziggler runs under his legs and connects with the ZIG ZAG for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Dolph Ziggler (5:53 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A fun match between two guys who deserve much better. But I won’t complain about these two doing battle on a show where I have no expectations. (**1/2)
