News + Notes

  • Jimmy Hart introduced Hulk Hogan, the hose of this edition of Smackdown. Hogan at least got the name of the city and venue right this time as opposed to what happened at Wrestlemania. Hogan promotes Legend’s House on WWE Network but says Smackdown is about looking to the future. He mentions Wrestlemania and then leaves. When you’ve got 1000 hours of television, you need someone to kill time. That’s what Hogan’s function was here.
  • After their match was over, Batista powerbombed Ziggler for fun. Also, his beard is getting pretty mighty.
  • Summer Rae fast counted Eva Marie and is apparently hated by every diva.
  • Bo Dallas made his WWE redebut. He behaves like his usual goofy self in a prematch promo and reminds me a lot of early Kurt Angle. After the match, Dallas helped Sin Cara up and told him to believe. This angle will not play on WWE Raw or Smackdown.
  • Michael Cole interviewed Paige about her title victory. She talks about how much it meant to win the Diva’s Championship. She’s got great poise when talking. I just hope WWE actually lets her wrestle in a competent fashion.
  • Bray Wyatt cut an awesome promo about his last man standing match with John Cena at Payback. Seriously, he’s growing into this character and becoming one of the top stars in the company, and the potential hasn’t even been scratched yet. He’s got such a command of his character and the crowd. He calls the Usos pawns in a nice moment.  He ends by singing that famous song.
  • Paul Heyman and Cesaro joined Michael Cole and JBL. Cesaro attacked Sheamus to cause a disqualification and ended with a Neuralizer and shaking Sheamus’s hand.
  • Vickie Guerrero did some talking. Adam Rose interrupted  and used the line about being a lemon or Rosebud. I have no idea whether I’m supposed to cheer or boo this guy. This actually goes back to WWE’s problem from years ago when they threw out a bunch of gimmicks instead of developing characters. Big difference.
  • Usos actually get a chance to speak and talk about family. John Cena came out, made jokes, and did the chest thumping exercise. Six months AFTER Wolf of Wall Street came out.
  • The crowd sweetening is blatantly obvious and borderline embarrassing. Almost as bad as the announcers.

The Matches

BATISTA VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER- Smackdown is apparently a parallel universe where Ziggler isn’t a complete jobber. This was a bit of a preview for the no holds barred six man tag between Evolution and The Shield. Pretty physical match as they spent a great deal of time brawling on the outside. Then they took turns using a chair. Ziggler pretty much wore Batista out with the chair in fact. Ziggler was allowed to show a ton of aggression and got in tons of offense against a main eventer. Hopefully, this is a positive sign for him even in a loss. Ziggler low blowed Batista in a turnaround from last week. Ziggler caught his leg trying to fameass Batista into the stairs.

NIKKI BELLA AND EVA MARIE VS. THE FUNKADACTYLS (NAOMI AND CAMERON)- The announcers spend more time discussingTotal Divasthan actually calling the match.Rae counts a fast three. So on Raw she comes back to get back at Layla and Fandango after being scorned. Here she’s a heel. Oy vey.

BO DALLAS VS. SIN CARA- Dallas controls much of the match with basic stuff. I just don’t see a lot of upside with him. Maybe that will change, but he needs a few years on the independent scene to hone the character and really improve in the ring. Sin Cara actually got some decent enough offense in,, but of course he wasn’t winning.

SHEAMUS VS. ALBERTO DEL RIO- Del Rio started the match off quickly after a Cesaro distraction. Sheamus came back and even came off the middle rope with a knee strike. Cesaro tried to cheap shot Sheamyus and failed.

THE USOS VS. THE WYATT FAMILY- There have been a number of six man tags, but this is a nice way to get the Usos a chance to showcase themselves in the main event of a television show. Harper had some great chemistry with Jimmy and Jay. Rowan… he sure was in the match. Fans still chant for John Cena at ringside, but what can you do? Cena did a great job getting the crowd  into the match before the hot tag. Fun exchange at the end as we saw a boot, superkick and tope dive. Who says WWE doesn’t embrace the indies? Wyatt shoves Jimmy Uso to caue the disqualification. Cena hits an AA on Rowan.  Pretty fun match until the main event.

 Overall Show Thoughts

Definitely a B level show with two matches ending in a disqualification and hinting at further issues down the road. Ziggler and Batista was definitely worth checking out as they got time and a chance to get physical. I liked the Wyatt promo, but it’s nothing that hasn’t been said a bunch of times before and becomes less effective when Cole regurgitates information.

“The Animal” Speaks

Batista makes his way out to open the show, wearing a wifebeater, sunglasses, and a douche hat. He looks like one of those Italian Jersey Shore dudes. The crowd lets him have it and it’s not exactly positive. We cut to clips from RAW where he was cost the match by Randy Orton’s distraction. Also included are Orton’s comments about Batista being booed, and Batista responding with saying that’s called “being real and honest” or whatever. Nice spin on it.

We go back live, Batista with a mic in hand. Batista starts by stating that he loves this business and this company, and then says he did not come back to be liked. Batista goes on, saying he did not come back to please the fans, he came back to be WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He says the fans don’t have to support him but they’re gonna have to deal with it. Batista says it’s a fact he can destroy anyone they put in front of him, and he’s the best representative of the WWE, better than Hulk Hogan and especially The Rock. Batista asks what the hell has happened to the business, what happened to the real men and the attitude. Batista admonishes the crowd for chanting the names of 195 pound wannabes and says the fans chant “YES!” but the truth is “NO!” they’ll never be like him. Batista tells the crowd to deal with it. Batista asks the crowd if they honestly think their heroes are as good as he is then puts down the mic. He takes off his wifebeater, without taking off the hat and sunglasses for extra douche power, then picks it back up. Batista says everything about him screams WWE World Heavyweight Champion. A “NO!” chant starts in the crowd. Batista says he can sympathize with the fans, saying they look at their heroes because they look just like him. Batista tells them they live in a fantasy, then tells the fans to go back to their Hot Topic jobs and get out of his world because from this point on he will be systematically destroying every one of their heroes on his way to the main event of Wrestlemania XXX to become World Champ. Batista drops the mic and his theme kicks up.

His posedown is interrupted by Dolph Ziggler who makes his way out to the ring. A “Ziggler = Best 4 Business” sign is clearly shown between them. Ziggler tells Batista that he knows he’s been gone awhile but he doesn’t get to tell the fans who to cheer for. Ziggler calls Batista a “dinosaur” which gets some boos (come on!) and sooner or later dinosaurs become extinct. Ziggler tells Batista there’s one real man standing right in front of him, jack, then challenges him to a match tonight, Batista laughs and slaps his knee, then grabs the mic and accepts the challenge. Ziggler backs away then drops Batista with a dropkick before exiting the ring. Batista furiously jaws at Ziggler from the ring as Ziggler backs away to the exit, his theme playing.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I’ve been as down on Batista returning as everybody else has, but I know when to admit my faults; the heel promo Batista just cut here was tremendous. It wasn’t cartoonishly heel, it came off more like a man frustrated with not being beloved like he should, and his declarations of being better than Rock or Hogan were great crowd heat bait. His declaration of wanting to destroy the fans’ “heroes” was cool as well and a nice way to play off the resentment…and also leaves the option open for a Daniel Bryan feud. Ziggler coming out and responding to Batista’s statements was cool as well, giving him a brief spotlight and I loved his dropkick knocking the sunglasses and hat off of Batista’s stupid head. Batista still has the big negative of me having to actually watch his matches but this personality shift is a good way in at least getting me not to bemoan the fact he has returned. Things could get interesting from here on out. You guys were right about Heel Batista being awesome, so pat yourselves on the backs wrestling fans.

We cut to the ring where Big E Langston and Mark Henry are making their way to the ring to Henry’s music. Their opponents, The Real Americans, are already in the ring with Zeb Colter dispensing advice on the apron. We go to a clip from Raw of Jack Swagger costing Cesaro his match against Big E, much to the Swiss Superman’s chagrin.

—–

Match #1: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston & Mark Henry Vs. The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter]

Langston and Swagger lock up and spin around the ring jockeying for position. Swagger backs Langston into a corner and goes for a cheap shot kick but Langston catches it and hits a release overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Langston knocks Cesaro off the apron then hits the running corner midsection shoulderblock. Henry tags in and Langston splashes Swagger before exiting the ring. Henry whips Swagger face-first into the corner but Swagger gets a boot up during a splash attempt. Swagger charges and Henry plants him with a powerslam. Henry throws Swagger into the corner then tags Langston back in. They whip Swagger hard back-first into the corner. Langston picks Swagger up and connects with three backbreakers in a row before covering for a 1-count. Swagger gets a kneelift in and tags in Cesaro.

Cesaro sends Langston to the apron, catches him with a kick, then rams him head-first into the strut. Cesaro climbs to the middle rope and connects with a deadlift superplex. He goes for the cover but Swagger apparently blind-tagged in during the move. Cesaro is in disbelief. Swagger picks the bones, hitting Langston with the Swagger Bomb for a 1-count. Swagger peppers Langston with rights in the corner then tags Cesaro back in. Swagger throws Cesaro into Langston into the corner, then Cesaro hits Langston with a short-arm clothesline for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro slaps on a sleeperhold. Langston fights out of the corner and hits Cesaro with a back bodydrop. Swagger tags in but so does Henry.

Henry drops Swagger with back to back clotheslines followed by a running powerslam. Henry sets up for the finish but Cesaro kicks Henry in the face. Langston bodyblocks Cesaro out to the floor and the two start brawling. Cesaro sends Langston into the post. Back in the ring Swagger clips the knee of Henry then slaps on the PATRIOT LOCK. Cesaro tags himself in as payback for earlier. Cesaro grabs Henry and connects with the NEUTRALIZER for the 1…2…3.

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Real Americans (5:32)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: An enjoyable tag team match. Cesaro not so subtly proved he was the better man over Swagger by finishing the match after blind tagging in (Swagger tried the same thing but couldn’t). It looks like we’re headed for a Real Americans break-up and as much as I love this team the prospect of a Cesaro/Swagger hoss fight at Wrestlemania XXX is too much to bare. HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT MATCH BE? Also Big E had a great showing at Elimination Chamber, his win helping make the IC Title look like a worthwhile belt, and now…he’s losing in tag team matches again. So much for building off that momentum, but to be fair this is the B-show so maybe they save that for Raw.

Post-Match: Colter raises The Real Americans’ arms in victory as Cole says Swagger should be jealous of Cesaro. They overcome their differences and celebrate with a “WE! THE PEOPLE!” chant.

—–

Vickie Guerrero is texting in her offense when Alberto Del Rio walks in. Del Rio says Guerrero hasn’t congratulated him for beating Batista on RAW and she says she hasn’t congratulated Batista on beating him at Elimination Chamber. Guerrero says that makes them tied 1-1. Del Rio says he came to ask for the rubber match, but he’s already wrestling. Del Rio says since that’s the case he wants to take the night off, then complements her hair. Sheamus walks in and says he’s always up for a great fight, and asks if he can face “Berti” for old time’s sake. Sheamus says if she makes this match for him it’ll be like a night off, then jokingly complements his hair. He walks off and Guerrero tells Del Rio that match is next.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: It’s been awhile since Sheamus/Del Rio were feuding and wrestling every month, so I’m okay with this happening again. Their match quality was never in question, it was just their neverending feud in 2012 that dragged it down.

DID YOU KNOW?: The 2014 HOF ceremony will air live on the WWE Network.

Sheamus makes his way out for the next match. We cut to clips from last Friday where Sheamus beat Christian, then Christian hit him with a cheap shot from behind. We go back live as Cole recaps the rest of the two’s issue over the past week. Sheamus’ opponent, Alberto Del Rio, makes his way out second to his old heel theme. I’m still happy they finally went back to it so I’m going to keep bringing it up.

—–

Match #2: Sheamus Vs. Alberto Del Rio

Sheamus backs Del Rio into the corner and goes to break clean, but Del Rio cheap shots him. Sheamus catches a kick and flips over the top and onto the floor. Sheamus goes to the apron and hits Del Rio with a flying shoulderblock, clutching his ribs which have tape on them. Sheamus throws Del Rio into the announce table then rolls him in. Sheamus drops an elbow and a series of knees. Sheamus with a European uppercut before sending him into the corner. Del Rio backdrops Sheamus to the apron but misses a shoulderblock and eats a kick to the face. Sheamus goes for the forearms of doom but Del Rio drops him throat-first on the top rope. Del Rio gets a full head of steam and dropkicks him out to the floor. Christian walks out to the ring to watch the match as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Del Rio works over Sheamus with right hands, followed by a jumping stomp. Christian is now on commentary and they talk about his elimination of Sheamus at Elimination Chamber. Del Rio climbs to the second rope and Sheamus clubs him with forearms and puts him on his shoulders. Del Rio tries to fight out but Sheamus successfully connects with an electric chair. Both men get to their feet and Sheamus hits Del Rio with back to back hammers followed by the corner midsection shoulderblock and running kneelift. Sheamus connects with a powerslam and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Del Rio ducks a short-arm clothesline and Brogue Kick, then hits a lung blower for the 1…2…kickout. Del Rio goes for the running kick but Sheamus dodges then sends Del Rio to the apron. Sheamus hits the 10 forearms of doom across the chest then picks him up in a fireman’s carry.

Del Rio escapes and sends Sheamus into the turnbuckles followed by a superkick to the ribs, dropping Sheamus to the knees. Del Rio connects with the superkick and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Del Rio is frustrated. Del Rio measures Sheamus and goes for the corner enziguri but misses. Sheamus grabs the legs and applies the IRISH CLOVERLEAF. Christian rushes into the ring and attacks Sheamus from behind, causing the DQ.

Winner [via DQ]: Sheamus (5:32 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: These two always work well together and this was no exception. Good match for what it was, but once Christian showed up I pretty much just sat there waiting for the interference to happen. Also good on JBL for crapping on Cole’s attempt to make Sheamus’ grand theft auto from 2012 funny.

Post-Match: Sheamus tosses Christian out of the ring but gets kicked full-force in the injured ribs by Del Rio. He goes for the Cross Armbreaker but Sheamus shoves him into the ropes and hits him with the BROGUE KICK. Christian runs back in and takes Sheamus out with the KILLSWITCH.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Saw a lot of people comparing Christian’s look tonight to that of Mortal Kombat’s Johnny Cage. They definitely weren’t wrong and as a big Johnny Cage guy I loved it.

Lana comes out to get the crowd’s attention. She tells the crowd to rise for the Bulgarian Brute, the Super Athlete, Alexander Rusev. Rusev walks out, stone-faced, and stands atop an Olympic-style three-step podium. Rusev now has the mic. Rusev speaks in Bulgarian then says his name. Pretty much the same thing he’s done in pre-taped promos but with a stage and in front of a crowd. They didn’t seem too receptive.

—–

RAW CLIP: Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins ask Dean Ambrose about where he disappeared off to at Elimination Chamber. Ambrose says he’s sick of explaining himself and if it’s not good enough for them then whatever. He walks off. We then cut to the Reigns/Bray Wyatt main event, which ends in chaos and Ambrose accidentally costing Reigns the match by being overzealous. Ambrose’s leather jacket is the best.

—–

We cut backstage where Roman Reigns chides Dean Ambrose and tells him to relax. Ambrose says he doesn’t know what he wants from him. Reigns says their recent losses have been because of Ambrose then Seth Rollins tells them to zip it. Rollins turns his attention to The Wyatt Family, saying they think they can move onto John Cena. Rollins says they need to show Bray Wyatt that it’s not easy to get rid of The Shield. Reigns tells them to strap in, it’s time to hunt some Wyatts. They conclude with their Shield pose.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Great segment. Reigns chiding Ambrose and Ambrose freaking out in a level-headed way (trust me it makes sense if you watch this) was great and Rollins was excellent as well getting them refocused and back on track.

Match #3: Dolph Ziggler Vs. Batista

Ziggler charges right at Batista with rights until Batista bails out to the floor. He angrily kicks the ring steps and circles the ring, then climbs back in. Ziggler ducks a clothesline and hits a series of rights followed by a dropkick. Batista once again bails to the floor. Batista pulls Ziggler out and tosses him into the barricade. Batista picks Ziggler up and drives him back-first into the ring frame. Batista picks Ziggler up, but Ziggler slides out and sends him into the ring post. Batista attacks Ziggler’s knee then rolls him in. Batista pulls Ziggler halfway out and drives an elbow into the sternum, then rams the knee into the ring post. Ziggler slides back out to the floor, screaming in pain. Batista rolls Ziggler in and connects with a suplex, covering for the 1…2…kickout.

Batista hammerthrows Ziggler hard into the corner, then stomps at the injured knee. Batista wraps it around the bottom rope, pulling back to further hurt the knee. Batista drives the shoulder into the midsection but is met with a knee to the face the second time around. Batista charges and Ziggler dodges, sending him shoulder-first into the ring post. Ziggler charges at Batista but he gets shoved off. Ziggler charges again and hits a few right in the corner mount. Batista picks him up out of the corner but Ziggler escapes and works Batista’s knee over with rapid-fire stomps. Ziggler measures Batista and hits the Fameasser for the 1…2…kickout. Ziggler jumps on Batista’s back and locks in a sleeper.

Batista shakes Ziggler off then plants him with a spinebuster. Batista circles his prey then hits another spinebuster. The crowd boos and he gives them a scowl. Batista picks Ziggler up and hits a third spinebuster. Ziggler is lifeless at this point. Batista signals for the finish, giving the thumbs down. Batista picks Ziggler up and connects with the BATISTA BOMB for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Batista (6:28)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Easily Batista’s best match since returning. Ziggler showed great fire in his offense as usual and also made Batista look like a monster by acting like a ragdoll. Batista’s heel mannerisms were great and his “three spinebusters because fuck this guy” lead-up to the finish was awesome. HOWEVER this was still not even a 7 minute match and it was against an opponent known for helping guys look good in the ring; the prospect of a Batista/Orton WM XXX main event still instills a feeling of apathy from me. And now that it’s essentially heel Vs. heel I don’t know how well that’ll play in front of the New Orleans crowd. WWE still has time to spice things up a bit and I really hope they do.

The Wyatt Family Speaks on John Cena

After a Wyatt jump cut we cut to the “We’re Here” video, with Bray Wyatt namedropping the city. “Live in Fear” then kicks up and Wyatt, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan make their way to the ring. We then cut to an ELIMINATION CHAMBER slideshow where they cost John Cena the EC match.

Back live The Wyatt Family are in the ring. Wyatt says everything they think they know about their own lives is based upon lies. Wyatt says men wake up and go to work just so they can buy themselves those fancy suits and sportscars to impress women. Wyatt then says women wake up every morning and coat makeup all over their faces because they didn’t realize they are wearing the mask society demands them to wear. Wyatt says “they” plaster their hopes and dreams on the billboard, and the man on that billboard is the man who hides behind the plastic smile and plays hero better than everyone else. Wyatt says this is the same society that intends to villify a man like him, because he says everything they are afraid to say and does everything they are afraid to do. Wyatt promises up until his final breath he will slay this mighty dragon and will stand over its body and whisper into its ear “John Cena…it’s time to end this lie, FOLLOW THE BUZZ…”

The Shield interrupt and out come the trio through the crowd. They climb the apron and stare The Wyatt Family down. Triple H then all of a sudden makes his way out (BOO). Triple H says this is not gonna happen right now, as he has too much time and invested in all six of them to let this war happen again right now. Triple H says “this war” can take place on RAW this Monday and orders The Shield to stand down until then. Harper and Rowan exit and Wyatt stays on the apron. He says “come on boys, you heard your DADDY” and laughs. The Shield then enter the ring, Roman Reigns in front. Wyatt reenters the ring to stare Reigns down. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose take out Harper and Rowan with stereo suicide dives and roll back in. Wyatt exits the ring and holds back his troops as Rollins and Ambrose scream for them to get back in the ring.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: An absolutely brilliant segment. Wyatt cut a great promo on John Cena then it transitioned beautifully back to the beef with The Shield. Triple H coming out was a bit of a wet blanket, the fact he flat out admitted Smackdown wasn’t a big enough show for this match to happen didn’t help, but he did make one hell of a (I assume) main event for RAW. If I still had cable that would turn the show into must-see for me. Goddamn. Excellent stuff.

WWE Divas Champ AJ Lee and Tamina Snuka are already in the ring for the next match. Lee’s opponent, Cameron, makes her way out second. We cut to a bunch of Total Divas clips that are meant to showcase Cameron’s personality but it just makes her look insufferable. They get the in-ring introduction treatment.

Match #4: AJ Lee (c) [w/ Tamina Snuka] Vs. Cameron for the WWE Divas Championship

Lee immediately goes on the attack with a series of rights then sends her into the corner. Lee whips Cameron back into the corner then connects with a clothesline for a 1-count. Lee slaps on a chinlock (already?). Cameron escapes with a jawbreaker, then hits back to back clotheslines followed by a running bulldog for the 1…2…kickout. Cameron screams in anger then sends Lee into the corner. Snuka pushes Lee out of the corner so Cameron hits nothing but corner. The ref tosses Snuka out of the match. Cameron catches Lee with a pair of boots and hits a second-rope crossbody for the 1…2…kickout. Lee catches Cameron with a kick followed by a spinkick to the jaw. Lee slaps on the BLACK WIDOW, Cameron doing the splits on the ground, and she taps.

Winner and STILL Divas Champion [via Submission]: AJ Lee (2:03)

Kane makes his way out first for the opposing team, followed by the Tag Team Champs The New Age Outlaws. No mic schtick.

—–

Main Event: Daniel Bryan & The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) Vs. Kane & *WWE Tag Team Champions* The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn)

Bryan and Gunn lock up, the latter grabbing a side headlock. Gunn takes Bryan down with a shoulderblock, so Bryan responds with a knee to the gut. Bryan kicks Gunn rapid-fire in the corner then tags Jey in. Jey grabs a wristlock but gets backed into the heel corner and Kane tags in. Kane takes Jey down with a right hook then sends him hard into the corner. Kane with an uppercut and a tag to Dogg who has a head tattoo I’ve just now noticed. Dogg makes with the left jabs, followed by the dance. Jey fights back and hits Dogg with a leaping clothesline. Jimmy tags in and The Usos hit Dogg with a double elbowdrop. Jimmy covers for a 2-count. Dogg dodges a superkick and bails out to the floor. Gunn consoles his partner ringside as Jimmy leads an Uso chant. The heels have a pow wow as we go to break.

-Commercial Break-

Gunn sends Jimmy into the corner but misses a splash and runs into a hip toss followed by an armdrag takedown. Gunn reverses an Irish whip and Jimmy slides under Dogg’s legs, taking him off the apron. Jimmy runs back in…and right into a tilt-a-whirl slam. Gunn covers for 2, then tags Kane in. Kane hits a running kick then throws Jimmy into the corner, following up with back to back clotheslines. Kane throws Jimmy out of the corner and covers for 2. Kane sends Jimmy into the corner and connects with a sidewalk slam for the 1…2…kickout. Kane slaps on a chinlock.

Kane connects with a cheapshot on Bryan then tags out to Dogg. Dogg chokes Jimmy on the middle rope then hits the running butt splash. Dogg knocks Jimmy off the apron, then eats an enziguri in the face from Jey. Bryan revs up and climbs back to the apron. Gunn tags in but so does Bryan. Bryan knocks Kane off the apron with a dropkick then hits Gunn with a series of corner Yes! Kicks. Bryan backflips out of the corner, ducks a clothesline, and hits one of his own. Gunn gets to his knees conveniently so Bryan can pepper him with Yes! Kicks. He goes for the killing blow but Dogg runs in and gets sent to the floor. Bryan dropkicks Gunn out to the floor and goes for a splash but Kane clotheslines him before. The Usos run in and Kane goozles both. The Usos escape and drop Kane with a double superkick, Jimmy takes Dogg out with a splash, Jey takes Kane out with a splash. Gunn runs in and hits Bryan with the FAMEASSER for the 1…2…kickout. Gunn can’t believe it. Gunn goes for a back suplex but Bryan lands on his feet and gets his boots up during a corner splash. Bryan finishes Gunn off with the BUSAIKU KNEE for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Daniel Bryan & The Usos (8:02 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A perfectly serviceable main event that capped off a (mostly) perfectly serviceable night of in-ring action. With Bryan and The Usos you know what you’re going to get and they hit those beats with precision.

Post-Match: Bryan & The Usos raise their hands in victory, then Bryan leads some “YES!” chants to end the episode.

*****

Overall Show Thoughts

With the exception of the Divas Championship match (which is sad because AJ Lee is awesome), this was an adequate Smackdown when it came to the in-ring action; none of the matches were dull or overly bad and I enjoyed them for what they were. However this episode excelled when it came to the segments, with Batista opening the show cutting a boss heel promo and the Wyatt Family/Shield/Triple H segment completely stealing the show. This won’t be an episode that’ll blow you away action-wise but it’s a good complement to RAW and that’s all it needs to be sometimes.

  • Best Match: Batista Vs. Dolph Ziggler
  • Worst Match: AJ Lee Vs. Cameron
  • Best Segment: Wyatt Family/Shield/Triple H
  • Worst Segment: Nothing bad.

We cut to the arena as pyro explodes at the entrance stage. The cameras pan the crowd as Michael Cole welcomes the home audience. Hype for the Orton/Cesaro main event. “Flight of the Valkyries” hits as Daniel Bryan makes his way out for the opening contest. The crowd engages in “YES!” chants as does my girlfriend who’s sitting beside me at the moment. His partners, Christian and Sheamus, make their way out next to their own entrance themes. Cole hypes that Sheamus will face Orton in the final EC gauntlet match on Monday. Their opponents, The Shield, make their way out through the crowd. Cole hypes the Shield/Wyatt Family match for EC.

Christian and Rollins start. Rollins with a kick and repeated stomps for the early advantage. Reigns tags in and connects with a midsection headbutt as Rollins holds his arms. Christian ducks back to back clotheslines and attempts a crossbody but Reigns catches him. Christian escapes a slam and catches Reigns with a right hand before tagging Sheamus in. He and Reigns stare one another down in the center of the ring. Sheamus blocks a right and hits a series of his own before sending him into the corner. Sheamus clobbers Reigns before Reigns gets a knee to the midsection and a headbutt. Sheamus reverses a corner Irish whip but runs into a back elbow. Reigns charges at Sheamus, who picks him up and hits a rolling fireman’s carry senton. Sheamus follows up with a knee drop and covers for 2.

Reigns counters an Irish whip attempt with a knee to the midsection followed by a right hand. Ambrose tags in and peppers Sheamus with jabs against the ropes. Ambrose charges and eats a forearm from Sheamus. Bryan tags in and kicks Ambrose into the corner. Ambrose reverses a corner Irish whip but Bryan flips over then hits him with a running clothesline. Bryan follows up with a corner dropkick then seats Ambrose on the top turnbuckle. Bryan climbs to the top and hits a hurricanrana for the 1…2…kickout. Bryan applies the YES LOCK until the other two Shield members run in. All six men stare one another down as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Rollins whips Bryan into the corner but misses the follow-up splash and Sheamus gets the hot tag. Two polish hammers followed by a corner midsection shoulderblock and a high running knee. Rollins escapes a slam and sends Sheamus to the apron. Sheamus gets a midsection shoulder in then hits the 10 forearms of doom across the chest. Sheamus heads to the top, taking Ambrose down with a right on his way up. Rollins hits an enziguri sending Sheamus to the apron and tags out to Reigns. Reigns gets a running head start and hits Sheamus with a dropkick. Reigns throws Sheamus into the barricade then rolls him back in for more punishment. Ambrose tags in and stomps Sheamus repeatedly until the ref forces him off. Sheamus fights back with rights while on his knees but Ambrose has rights of his own that take him down.

Rollins tags in and works Sheamus over in the corner, stomping him down to the mat. Rollins hits a running corner forearm then covers for the 1…kickout. Rollins rips at Sheamus’ nose until the ref counts him off. Reigns tags back in and catches Sheamus with a right hand. Reigns works Sheamus over in the corner with strikes until Sheamus blocks a right and hits a series of his own. Reigns kicks Sheamus down and slams his head into the canvas. Reigns applies a front facelock to wear his opponent down. Sheamus gets close to a tag but Reigns cheap shots Bryan off the apron. Reigns jaws at Christian then turns around and runs into an Irish Curse Backbreaker.

Rollins tags in, misses a Christian cheap shot, then misses the senton on Sheamus. Ambrose tags in but so does Christian and it’s the latter with the house of fire offense including the ten right hands of doom in the corner mount. Christian catches Rollins with a right hand on the floor then sends Ambrose into the corner. Christian climbs to the second rope and levels Ambrose with a tornado DDT for the 1…2…Reigns and Rollins break it up. Bryan takes both of them out with a double missile dropkick. He hits YES! KICKS to both men. He goes for the final kill shot but Reigns catches him and picks him up. Bryan sends Reigns out with a hurricanrana and a tope suicida. Rollins then levels Bryan with a tope suicida of his own. Christian plants Ambrose in the ring and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Christian ducks a cheap shot from Rollins, who runs into a Brogue Kick. Ambrose hits Sheamus with a knee and Christian goes for the Killswitch. Ambrose escapes and ducks a Brogue Kick, resulting in Sheamus hitting Christian. Reigns spears Sheamus and Ambrose covers Christian for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Shield (9:47 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Exciting six-man tag to start off the show, with a tremendously fun finishing sequence. Bryan is never not fun to watch and Reigns’ dropkick on the apron might be my new favorite move. The Shield squeaking it out by an errant Brogue Kick helps them look like a smart trio unit while also preserving the face team a little bit since they need a little protection heading into the Elimination Chamber. Bryan being in this match was a little odd though. Feels like he’s above these at this point.

Vickie Guerrero is backstage talking up the WWE Network on her cell phone when Zeb Colter interrupts. Colter asks Guerrero to be her valentine and gives her a box of chocolates. Guerrero tells him to cut the act and tell her what he actually wants. Colter says he resents that but then asks for Jack Swagger to be put in a title match. Guerrero says no because he’s on a losing streak but Colter says they’ll earn it. Guerrero says she’ll put Swagger in an IC Title match against Big E Langston if he can beat Rey Mysterio. Colter is cool with that but Guerrero’s not finished: Swagger will also have to go through Kofi Kingston and Mark Henry in a 4-way #1 contenders match. Guerrero angrily hands Colter back the chocolates and sarcastically wishes him a Happy Valentine’s Day.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Amusing segment, interesting match made. Glad WWE remembered the IC Title is a thing again, at least for this upcoming PPV. Who do you think is going to win: the three faces/friends of Big E or the one heel? HMMMMMM.

Match #2: Rey Mysterio Vs. Mark Henry Vs. Kofi Kingston Vs. Jack Swagger [w/ Zeb Colter in a FATAL FOUR WAY MATCH

Henry uses his strength to get the early advantage, sending Swagger out to the floor. Kingston and Mysterio try to Irish whip Henry to no avail so they settle for a double dropkick instead. Henry rolls to the outside, leaving Kingston and Mysterio to face off. Kingston leapfrogs Mysterio twice then hits a back elbow, covering for a 2-count. Mysterio ducks a running kick and rolls through a sunset flip attempt, kicking Kingston in the face for a 2-count. Swagger trips Mysterio and rolls back into the ring. Kingston attempts a crossbody but Swagger catches him. Kingston escapes and helps send Swagger back to the floor with Mysterio. Kingston hits Swagger with a flying senton, then Mysterio flattens Kingston with a seated senton from the apron. Henry recovers and stands in the center of the ring. Henry goes for a running splash but Swagger runs in and clips the knee instead. Aw man.

Swagger stomps the fallen Henry then connects with back-to-back Swagger Bombs. Swagger stops for “WE! THE PEOPLE!” and Kingston attacks him from behind. Mysterio then dropkicks Kingston away and goes for 619 on Swagger, but Swagger regroups and hits him with a clothesline instead for the 1…2…kickout. Swagger works Mysterio over in the corner with knee strikes. Swagger seats Mysterio on the top turnbuckle but gets kicked away. Mysterio climbs to the top and hits a seated senton followed a tilt-a-whirl headscissors takedown. Mysterio hits a wheelbarrow into a bulldog for the 1…2…Kingston makes the save. Mysterio whips Kingston into the corner but misses a shoulderblock, sending himself into the ring post and out to the floor.

Kingston connects with a springboard dropkick on Swagger then hits his pre-Boom Drop combo. Kingston connects with said Boom Drop then revs up in the corner for the finish. Kingston clears Mysterio off the apron and catches a charging Swagger with a bit boot. Kingston climbs to the top and Swagger meets him in the middle. Henry walks in and power bombs Swagger to the mat. Mysterio attacks Henry but runs right into a big boot. Kingston hits Henry with a top rope move but Henry responds with a clothesline. Swagger escapes a slam attempt by Henry and clips the knee, then applies THE PATRIOT LOCK. Henry rolls through and shoves Swagger away with his feet.

Henry recovers against the ropes and Mysterio hits a 619 to the gut. Kingston then lays Henry out with TROUBLE IN PARADISE but doesn’t make the cover as Henry rolls to the floor. Kingston goes for a German suplex on Mysterio but Swagger runs up from behind and hits them both with a German suplex. NICE. Swagger tosses Kingston to the floor then goes for the P-Lock on Mysterio. Mysterio instead sends him into the ropes but his 619 attempt is blocked by Kingston who hits him with TROUBLE IN PARADISE for the 1…2…Henry yanks Mysterio out of the ring. Kingston kicks Henry into the announce table and skins the cat but Swagger applies the PATRIOT LOCK on his way up. Kingston escapes and goes for Trouble in Paradise but Swagger catches the leg and once again applies the PATRIOT LOCK, this time for the submission victory!

Winner and New #1 Contender to the IC Championship [via Submission]: Jack Swagger (8:31)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A really good and competitive match that did a lot in making the IC Championship seem like a big deal; if these four were willing to kill themselves over it then it must be a championship worth paying attention to. Swagger was the All-Star here and his two Patriot Locks at the end of the match were tremendous. Kingston, Henry, and Mysterio all had some highlights as well.

Wade Barrett‘s “Bad News Podium” ascends by the entrance stage. It’s even more ridiculous than usual. Barrett bangs the gavel and asks for decorum. Barrett says today’s the day “you Americans” celebrate Valentine’s Day but he’s got some BAD NEWS; American women are gonna gorge themselves on candy and chocolate and the next day be ashamed at what they see in the mirror. Match #3: Cody Rhodes & Goldust and The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) Vs. *WWE Tag Team Champions* The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) and Ryback & Curtis Axel

Goldust and Gunn start. Goldust with a side headlock into a running shoulderblock. Goldust reverses an Irish whip into an inverted atomic drop and drop down right hand. Goldust follows up with an armdrag into a wristlock. Gunn breaks out with a right hand and tags into Dogg, who falls victim to a hip toss. Rhodes tags in and works Dogg over in the corner, stomping him down to the mat. Dogg reverses a corner Irish whip but falls victim to the corner sunset flip for 2. Dogg catches Rhodes with a right hand, and Rhodes responds with a misdirection clothesline, covering for 2. Rhodes applies a wristlock and tags in Jimmy Uso. After a strike he tags in Jey, and The Usos hit Dogg with a double elbowdrop. Jey covers Dogg, resulting in a 2-count.

Jey applies a wristlock but eats a knee to the midsection. Axel tags in and connects with a running right to the gut. Jey reverses an Irish whip, but Axel leapfrogs him and connects with a dropkick. Jey rolls to the apron and Axel hits him with a slingshot forearm. Axel rolls back in and works Jey over with strikes and stomps in the corner until the ref forces him off. Axel connects with a running kick and chokes Jey with his knee. Axel sends Jey into the corner and tags Ryback in. Ryback connects with a series of midsection shoulderblocks then hammer throws Jey hard into the opposite corner. Ryback repeatedly stomps the fallen Uso then chokes him with the bottom rope until the ref counts him off. Ryback chops Jey in the corner and follows up with a forearm to the back.

Ryback backs Jey into the corner and once again connects with a chop but Jey fights back with open hand strikes of his own. Ryback whips Jey into the ropes and connects with a gorilla press slam, almost deadlift-like. Ryback taunts the crowd then goes back to work as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Jey breaks out of a chinlock but Ryback catches him with a running elbow to the face. Gunn tags in and sends Jey face-first into the corner, following up with a right hand and a corner stomp. JBL says Gunn hasn’t aged, ignoring the fact he’s wearing a t-shirt to cover his flab as well as the receding hairline. Gunn misses a corner splash and both men are down. Dogg tags in but so does Jimmy. Jimmy superkicks Ryback off the apron then hits Dogg with a running elbow. Jimmy knocks Axel off the apron and hits Dogg with a Samoan drop. Gunn runs in and eats a Bubba Bomb, then Jimmy hits both New Age Outlaws with the Rikishi corner splashes. Jimmy covers Dogg for the 1…2…Axel breaks the count. Rhodes sends Axel out then hits a springboard splash to the outside. Ryback gets back up and sends Rhodes into the barricade. Ryback turns around and Goldust hits him with a senton from the apron. The Usos superkick Dogg, then Jey flies over the ring post and splashes the three remaining heels. Jimmy finishes Dogg off with the Superfly Splash for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Cody Rhodes, Goldust, & The Usos (8:23 shown)

  •  Jon’s Thoughts: A fun match and a good win for the Usos, cementing them as the #1 contenders to the Tag Team Titles. Here’s hoping they win them so NAO can go fade back into obscurity/teach people nothing down at NXT. Fingers crossed. Also whomever keeps feeding JBL the “Billy Gunn hasn’t aged” lines at commentary needs to have their eyes checked or needs to have their Gunn crush reigned in; eventually they’re going to force JBL to say “and his dick is sooooo big and intimidating”.

Post-Match: A replay of the big moments play as Cole/JBL hype The Usos being NAO’s next contender. The two face teams are then shown celebrating in the ring.

Match #4: Darren Young Vs. Damien Sandow

Young grabs a side headlock. Sandow whips him off, eats a shoulderblock, then leap frogs right into an inverted atomic drop. Young clotheslines Sandow and himself over the top rope. Young jaws at O’Neil, allowing Sandow to kick his leg out. Sandow sends Young into the barricade with a Russian legsweep, then rolls Sandow and covers for 2. Young fights back with rights but runs right into a knee to the midsection. Sandow goes for You’re Welcome but Young reverses into a roll-up for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Darren Young (1:10)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Poor Damien Sandow 😦

Post-Match: O’Neil runs into the ring and attacks Young from behind. O’Neil takes off his suit jacket and turns around into a spear. Young peppers him with rights and rips O’Neil’s 3500 dollar suit pants up as he bails out to the floor. O’Neil angrily throws the ring steps and yells at the ref as Young wears the ripped up cloth around his neck. Young dances and mocks O’Neil.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I’m more interested in the Young/O’Neil feud than I thought I’d be, I’ll admit it. A midcard feud between two people with actual backstory. Usually teams break up and that’s that.

Match #5: The Miz Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]

Fandango grabs a side headlock to start. Miz whips Fandango off and gets taken down with a shoulderblock. Miz leap frogs Fandango and dropkicks his leg sending him flipping to the mat. Miz connects with some rights in a corner mount then works over Fandango’s knee with another kick. Fandango catches a running Miz with a clothesline for 2. Fandango stomps Miz repeatedly then slaps the back of his head. Miz fights back with strikes to the midsection, then hits a backbreaker. Fandango counters the follow-up neckbreaker with a dropkick for 2 then applies a reverse chinlock. An “UNDERTAKER” chant breaks out for some reason. Fandango goes for a suplex but Miz flips out and catches him with an elbow. Miz connects with a running clothesline then this time hits the backbreaker/neckbreaker combo. Miz goes for the SCF but Fandango drops down so he goes for the Figure Four. Fandango sends him into the post as Santino Marella & Emma speed walk their way down the aisle. Rae yells at them and Emma just dances instead. Emma shoves Rae so Rae slaps her. Emma and Rae brawl on the floor as Fandango throws Miz out to the floor. Fandango goes over to Marella, who hits him with the Cobra, then he turns around into  a SKULL CRUSHING FINALE for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: The Miz (3:44)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: So I guess The Miz is just mad he’s not on RAW because he’s on every other damn show WWE puts on. This match was definitely the least interesting of the show, meant to further the Marella/Emma Vs. Fandango/Rae feud more than anything. Not for nothing but O’Neil/Young is a more interesting feud and should have gotten more time than this did.

We cut to a video of the Cole/Triple H sitdown on WWE.com where Triple H speaks highly of Cesaro, calling him potentially the most dangerous man in that match. The main event is next!

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton makes his way out to the ring after Cole does some shilling for tonight’s sponsors. We see a graphic of Orton’s EC Gauntlet record. Cesaro holds down the ropes to invite him into the ring.

Main Event: Cesaro [w/ Zeb Colter] Vs. *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Cesaro goes for a quick roll-up for 1. Orton immediately bails to the floor to regroup as Cesaro is kept at bay by the ref. Orton slides back in, rolls up Cesaro for 1, then slides back out when his pinfall attempt fails. Orton trash talks Cesaro from the floor then climbs back in. Cesaro takes Orton down with a waistlock, then turns it into a bridging pin for 1. Cesaro deadlifts Orton up and connects with a gutwrench suplex for 2. Cesaro connects with a double stomp and covers for another 2-count. Cesaro connects with a European uppercut in the corner then whips him into the opposite side. Orton comes running out with a clothesline and the tides turn. Orton with a European uppercut of his own. Cesaro fights back with right hands and uppercuts in the corner. Cesaro whips Orton into the corner and hits the running European uppercut. Cesaro wrestles Orton down and covers for 2, then Orton bails once more. Cesaro follows him out and Orton throws him into the barricade not once but twice, following up with a clothesline. Orton rolls in and poses as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Orton back suplexes Cesaro on the top of the barricade then slams him face-first on the announce table. Orton rolls Cesaro in and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Orton slaps on a reverse chinlock. A “WE THE PEOPLE” chant breaks out. Cesaro escapes the chinlock and backs Orton into the corner. They trade European uppercuts. Orton throws in a headbutt then Cesaro hits him with uppercuts and headbutts, but Orton responds with a back elbow to regain the advantage. Cesaro bails to the outside and Orton follows him out. Orton slams Cesaro’s head on the ring frame then throws him into the barricade, Cesaro bouncing back and hitting Orton with a clothesline.

Cesaro rolls Orton in and climbs to the apron. Orton catches him with a kick and goes for the hanging DDT but Cesaro sweeps the legs and goes for the Cesaro Swing. Orton grabs the bottom rope and shoves Cesaro off. Orton charges and Cesaro sweeps the legs again. He makes with the CESARO SWING and the crowd goes crazy for 18 rotations. Cesaro tries to attack but Orton can’t even get back to his feet. Cesaro sets up for the Neutralizer but Orton responds with a back bodydrop. Cesaro lands on his feet but runs into a powerslam. Orton covers for the 1…2…kickout. Orton sends Cesaro to the apron and plants him with the hanging DDT. Orton looks at the WM XXX sign and points, then coils up for the finish. He goes for the RKO but Cesaro hits him with a European uppercut, then connects with the catapult European uppercut for the 1…2…kickout! DAMN.

Cesaro charges into the corner but Orton side steps and follows up with a dropkick for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro bails back to the apron, Colter dispensing advice. Orton sends Cesaro face-first into the ring post then climbs to the second rope. He picks Cesaro up to the the middle as well for a superplex but Cesaro fights him off. Cesaro connects with a sunset bomb followed by a rolling European uppercut the NEUTRALIZER for the 1…2…3! YESSSSSSS

Winner [via Pinfall]: Cesaro (10:22 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Last week I lamented the fact that it looked like Orton was going to steamroll through the less important EC participants in the gauntlet. I couldn’t be happier to be proven wrong as Cesaro picked up a pretty big win and in dominant fashion as well. His stint as the de facto babyface was a hint at the potential of a big league Cesaro run and he definitely proved he could hang with the big boys in all the ways you’d want (match quality, crowd engagement, the look, etc.). This gave me chills…even though it probably won’t amount to much after the Elimination Chamber concludes. At least we have tonight!

Post-Match: Cesaro celebrates the victory as Cole says it’s “career-defining”. A replay of the big moments air, then we conclude the episode on Cesaro’s in-ring celebration, WM XXX sign-pointing and all.

*****

Overall Thoughts

Smackdown was filler-free this week, with every match serving a purpose, be it building up a dominant trio (The Shield), furthering a feud (Usos/NAO, Young/O’Neil), or just making one of the “lesser” EC participants look a lot more dangerous than before (Cesaro). Yes there were some slower moments but overall this was one of the best episodes of the show I have seen in awhile. Whatever has gotten into WWE in regards to this show is something that I hope sticks around.

  • Best Match: Orton Vs. Cesaro
  • Worst Match: Miz Vs. Fandango

-WWE Signature/Smackdown Intro-

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I don’t think I’ve actually seen a video intro for Smackdown since I started covering it for the site.

—–

We cut to the arena in Des Moines and pan the crowd as Michael Cole welcomes the home audience. “Flight of the Valkyries” brings out Daniel Bryan to open the show. Cole pimps the “Yes! Movement” as well as Bryan’s upcoming part in the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The music dies down as Bryan stands in the center of the ring, enjoying the “YES!” chants. Bryan calls the crowd great, then brings up The Authority saying they might make him the face of the WWE if he could just beat Randy Orton on Monday. Bryan says he doesn’t want to be the face of the WWE, he just wants to be himself. Bryan says when he did beat Orton The Authority showed their true colors and segues into a video clip from Monday’s show.

RAW CLIP: Kane tries to get involved in Bryan/Orton main event, and Bryan takes him out before beating Orton. Orton and Kane then proceed to beat Bryan up.

Back live the crowd boos as Bryan as an incredulous look on his face. Bryan says that ever since Kane has aligned himself with The Authority he has stayed out of his way but not anymore. Bryan calls Kane out for an explanation as to why his former tag team partner is now a corporate sellout. Flames ignite, “Veil of Fire” plays, and out comes Kane to the entrance stage. Kane goes to talk but Bryan immediately interrupts, saying he can’t seem to hear him way back there because of the crowd, and asks him to come down and talk face to face. Kane says that won’t be necessary and apologizes for his actions on Monday. Kane says he acted of his own volition, and it was unprofessional, improper, and unfitting for someone in an executive office.

Bryan asks Kane what the hell he’s talking about, and brings up their past as Team Hell No (including hugging it out). Bryan asks what happened to that Kane. Bryan says that Kane helped him, made him a better person, and became his friend. Bryan says The Authority tried to put him in a suit too so he gets it but he said no and he was hoping Kane would have done the same thing but he has embraced it instead. Bryan tells Kane to take his cheap tie off, get his mask back, and get rid of “Corporate Kane”. The crowd chants “YES!” in agreement. Kane tells Bryan he’s right and they do have history, but it’s exactly that. Kane says he has traded in the bowels of the arena for a corner office and couldn’t be happier. Kane says he’s glad his Team Hell No days are over, and tells Bryan they are not friends. A “YOU SOLD OUT” chant breaks out. Kane tells Bryan they never were friends to begin with. Kane says you can either make friends or make money and he’s doing pretty well for himself right now.

Bryan says he considers himself to be doing well right now, but that’s because he has an entire arena full of friends. Bryan then challenges Kane to fight him right now like two men who aren’t friends. Kane says that’s not going to happen but if Bryan wants to compete he will allow him to do so and on behalf of The Authority he has scheduled Bryan a match against fellow Elimination Chamber contestant…ANTONIO CESARO. Kane sarcastically wishes Bryan luck and stares him down as Bryan leads “YES!” chants.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A good segment to start the show and I dug that it actually included their Team Hell No partnership. WWE tends to ignore its history more often than not and although THN wasn’t that long ago they could have easily just went “screw it” and pretended like it didn’t happen. Here it gives the Bryan/Kane conflict some actual weight, and I really dig Kane in this role. Bryan Vs. Cesaro should be an excellent main event to this episode. Now let’s just hope the rest of the show is worth sitting through to get there.

—–

We cut to the announce table where Cole and JBL hype the main event, and the Elimination Chamber PPV. Cole hypes Orton Vs. Christian Vs. Cena Vs. Cesaro Vs. Sheamus Vs. Bryan in an EC match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, laying out the rules for the match. Cole then segues into hype for Orton/Christian later tonight as part of Orton’s “Elimination Chamber Gauntlet” series.

—–

Special Op” brings The Shield out through the crowd. Lilian Garcia announces Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns, so I guess they’re the ones teaming up this week. They take on Dolph Ziggler & Kofi Kingston next!

  • Jon’s Thoughts: First they wrestled each other every week for months on end and now Ziggler & Kingston are tag team bros. They just can’t quit each other.

—–

-Commercial Break/RAW Hype-

—–

Here to Show the World” plays as Dolph Ziggler & Kofi Kingston jaw with their opponents in-ring. Seth Rollins joins Cole & JBL on commentary and we see a clip of Ambrose stealing the win from Reigns during the six-man tag team match on Monday. Rollins denies there being any problems within The Shield.

—–

Match #1: Kofi Kingston & Dolph Ziggler Vs. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose & Roman Reigns) [w/ Seth Rollins]

Kingston and Ambrose start, the latter taking the former to the mat with a side headlock takedown. They get to their feet and Ambrose transitions into a wristlock. Kingston rolls through and reverses into a side headlock into a hammerlock into an armbar then  a takedown and 2-count. Ziggler tags in and they hit a double hip toss, Ziggler covering Ambrose for 1. Ambrose gets a boot to the gut and takes Ziggler down with a shoulderblock. Ziggler leapfrogs the running Ambrose, blocks a hip toss attempt, then takes him down with a right. Ziggler hits the rapid-fire elbowdrops for 2. Ambrose backs Ziggler into the corner and Reigns tags in. Reigns connects with an uppercut to the jaw then chokes Ziggler with his foot against the bottom rope.

Reigns rings Ziggler’s arm then tags Ambrose in. Ambrose connects with a running boot to the shoulder then follows up with the Muta-style elbowdrop for a 1-count. Ambrose goes for a suplex but Ziggler escapes and connects with a dropkick. Kingston gets the hot tag and takes Ambrose out with a springboard clothesline. Kingston sends Reigns off the apron then hits a series of strikes and dropkicks on Ambrose. Ambrose catches Kingston and hot shots him on the top rope. Reigns tags in and hits an awesome running dropkick on the apron to Kingston. The Shield is in control as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Ambrose has Kingston in a front facelock then transitions into a butterfly suplex. Ambrose floats over into a lateral press for a 2-count then immediately applies a chinlock once Kingston kicks out. Kingston gets to his feet and escapes but eats a knee to the gut. Ambrose works Kingston over in the corner then seats him on the top turnbuckle. Ambrose scales to the middle turnbuckle and clubs Kingston a few times. He goes for a super butterfly suplex but Kingston fights him off. Kingston follows up with a flying crossbody and both men are down. Ambrose grabs Kingston’s leg to prevent a tag but eats a spinning heel kick to the face.

Reigns gets the tag but so does Ziggler. Ziggler ducks a clothesline, hitting a crossbody followed by a dropkick and a Stinger Splash in the corner, transitioning into a mount and 10 right hands of doom. Ziggler immediately follows up with a neckbreaker. Reigns dodges the Fameasser and plants Ziggler with a slam. Reigns punches the mat and sets up for the Superman Touch. Ambrose goes for the blind tag but Reigns dodges it. Kingston trips Ambrose off the apron and Ziggler hits the implant DDT on Reigns for the 1…2…kickout. Ambrose sends Kingston into the barricade and Rollins checks on Ambrose. Rollins catches Ziggler with a Superman Punch and finishes him off with the SPEAR. Reigns then tags Ambrose in for the “easy victory”. They jaw at each other then Ambrose covers Ziggler for the 1…2…3.

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Shield (7:32 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I was looking for something that would finally sell me on Roman Reigns and strangely enough this match just did it. His few moments of offense were great, especially that running dropkick to the apron which was out of nowhere and beautiful to boot. Reigns doing the work and letting Ambrose take the glory was great, his way of making a statement that he really is the man of The Shield. The Shield also keeps proving that even when they have issues they’re still the best unit in the WWE, which is cool and at the same time a bit weird to watch since I’m admittedly used to teams losing because of issues, not overcoming them.

Post-Match: Ambrose talks trash while Reigns just smiles at him. Rollins gets in between them and tries to talk sense into his teammates. One Wyatt Jump Cut later and the arena is dark, The Wyatt Family on the TitanTron. Luke Harper is whistling while Bray Wyatt is laughing. Wyatt makes fun of The Shield for bickering like children and consumed with pride. Wyatt calls them fools and says “they” believe him to be a facade. Wyatt takes his hat off and gets serious, saying that if they could only see the monster behind his eyes then they’d realize how real he really is. Harper tells The Shield that they will be the first ones to burn. Wyatt concludes with “Follow The Buzzards” and the Wyatt Jump Cut concludes the segment.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: The Wyatt Family promo was short but oh dear god was it brilliant. Wyatt getting super serious and crazy at the end was tremendous and Harper’s talking skills are improving. The opening with Wyatt laughing and Harper whistling? Haunting. I might have to shell out the money to see Elimination Chamber, this build has got my wrestling boner at full stone. I could break a wall down with this thing.

Written In My Face” brings out Sheamus for the next match. His opponent, Ryback, is already in the ring joined by his tag team partner Curtis Axel.

—–

Match #2: Sheamus Vs. Ryback [w/ Curtis Axel]

The bulls lock up and jockey for position. Eventually Sheamus manages to grab a side headlock. Ryback whips Sheamus into the ropes, but Sheamus ducks a clothesline and takes Ryback down with a shoulderblock. Sheamus hits the ropes but Axel grabs the leg to distract him. Ryback reverses an Irish whip but Sheamus escapes a slam and hits the rolling senton. Sheamus rolls out of the ring and takes Axel out with a Brogue Kick. Sheamus climbs back to the apron and hits the shoulder into the midsection of Ryback. Sheamus then hits a series of clubbing forearms against the chest. Ryback fights him off, pulls him back in the ring, then connects with a standing spinebuster. Ryback hits a running clothesline in the corner then whips Sheamus hard into the opposite corner.

Ryback chokes Sheamus with his boot then slams him to the canvas. Ryback connects with a running splash for 1. Ryback applies a cobra clutch and yells at the crowd to shut up while he tries to wear Sheamus down. Sheamus gets to his feet and headbutts his way out. Ryback fights back and hits a backpack jawbreaker. Ryback calls Sheamus stupid then heads to the top turnbuckle (?!?). Ryback goes for a flying splash but Sheamus rolls out of the way. Sheamus catches Ryback with an elbow and mounts a comeback with a series of rights, followed by two running polish hammers. Ryback dodges the running knee and goes for a slam but Sheamus escapes and connects with a powerslam of his own. Sheamus revs up in the corner and goes for the Brogue Kick but Ryback catches him and connects with a power bomb for the 1…2…kickout! Ryback waits for Sheamus to get up, revving himself up. He goes for the Meathook Clothesline but Sheamus catches him with the BROGUE KICK and covers for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Sheamus (5:44)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I’d never thought I’d be saying this but I wish this match had been longer because I was enjoying the hell out of it. Two hosses pummeling each other, Ryback going for a top rope splash for maybe the first time in his career, the Brogue Kick into a power bomb counter…there wasn’t one dull second in this match. I might have missed Sheamus far more than I thought.

We cut to the announce table where Cole and JBL talk about Randy Orton having to run a “gauntlet” against his Elimination Chamber opponents over the next few weeks. He segues into his interview with Triple H on WWE.com.

He says Orton has a lot to prove on Friday against Christian, and again on Monday against John Cena. After some more WWE Network hype we cut backstage where Renee Young is standing by with Alberto Del Rio. They watch a clip from RAW where he and Batista had an in-ring skirmish. Back live Young asks why Del Rio continues antagonizing Batista. Del Rio says Batista is an animal and he’s the tamer. Del Rio says he’s going to turn Batista into a little puppy who has to drink from a saucer, then concludes by speaking Spanish.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Even the two guys involved in this feud don’t seem to care about it. This was Del Rio on autopilot.

Match #3: Daniel Bryan Vs. Antonio Cesaro [w/ Zeb Colter & Jack Swagger]

Cesaro takes Bryan to the mat with a waistlock but Bryan escapes and applies a front facelock. Cesaro backs Bryan into the corner and connects with a right to the ribs followed by a chop. Cesaro throws Bryan back into the corner and connects with another chop. Bryan then tosses Cesaro in the corner for some YES! Kicks followed by a series of knee strikes. Bryan whips Cesaro into the ropes and hits a knee to the gut, sending Cesaro flipping to the mat. Cesaro fights back and floors Bryan with a European uppercut. They lock knuckles and Cesaro repeatedly tries to cover to no avail. Bryan bridges up and Cesaro tries to break it but he can’t. Bryan launches himself up and connects with a hurricanrana. Cesaro gets to his knees and eats some YES! Kicks before Cesaro catches one and drives him to the mat with a spinebuster. A lateral press results in a 2-count and Cesaro immediately slaps on a chinlock.

Bryan gets to his feet and whips Cesaro off, but gets taken down with a shoulderblock. Bryan leapfrogs a running Cesaro, hits a hip toss, and applies a short-arm scissors. Cesaro gets to his feet and deadlifts Bryan up, dropping him to the mat in a sort-of electric chair position, breaking the hold. Cesaro picks Bryan up and sends him to the corner, hitting a European uppercut and a series of rights. Cesaro connects with a snap suplex and floats over into a lateral press for a 2-count. Cesaro immediately transitions into a rear-chinlock. Bryan breaks out but eats a knee to the face. Bryan flips out of the corner and hits the running clothesline. Cesaro bails to the corner and Bryan revs up. Bryan hits the corner dropkick then seats Cesaro on the top turnbuckle. Bryan connects with a hurricanrana and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro gets to his knees and Bryan makes with the Yes! Kicks to the chest. Cesaro ducks the head kick and rolls him up for 1…2…kickout. Bryan attempts the Yes! Lock but Cesaro hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker as a counter. Cesaro is in control as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Cesaro hits a running corner European uppercut and covers Bryan for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro slaps on another chinlock, putting his knee on the neck for added pressure. Bryan goes to break out but Cesaro shoves him into the corner. Bryan fights out of it but eats a running big boot to the mush. Cesaro charges at Bryan but gets sent out to the floor. Bryan heads to the apron and catches Jack Swagger with a flying knee when Cesaro dodges. Cesaro charges at Bryan but Bryan dodges and he meets the barricade. Bryan rolls Cesaro in and climbs to the top. Cesaro catches a flying Bryan with a European uppercut and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro sweeps the legs and goes for the Cesaro Swing but Bryan grabs the ropes. Cesaro pulls him off and Bryan catches him with a small package for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro hits Bryan with a clothesline and goes for the Neutralizer but Bryan escapes and goes for the Yes! Lock. Cesaro dodges and sends him into the corner. Bryan charges out and hits a tilt-a-whirl ambreaker Mistico-style. Bryan transitions into the YES! LOCK and Cesaro taps.

Winner [via Submission]: Daniel Bryan (8:10 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Damn good match. Would have made a great main event but I guess Orton gets that spot due to being “World Champion” or whatever. Pfft. Bryan’s tilt-a-whirl spin into an armbreaker is a good addition to his already awesome moveset. Nothing bad to say here, folks. Three good matches in a row. This Smackdown is awesome.

Post-Match: Kane walks out to the ring as Bryan begs for him to get in the ring. Cesaro attacks Bryan from behind and hits him with the NEUTRALIZER. Kane gets in the ring as Cesaro and company bail. Kane goozles Bryan to his feet and connects with a chokeslam. Kane stands over Bryan and ignites the ring posts.

—–

We go backstage where Renee Young is standing by with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton. Orton ignores Young’s question about having to run a gauntlet before the Elimination Chamber, and says Bryan’s win on Monday was a fluke. Orton promises victory over Christian tonight, Cena Monday, and the other two after. Orton then says he’ll retain the World Title at EC and remain the greatest superstar of his era.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Remember earlier when I said Del Rio was on autopilot? This is a better example of autopilot, a utility promo to remind people of what’s going on done without any interest or investment from the person reciting it. Boo urns.

Match #4: Nikki Bella [w/ Brie Bella] Vs. *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee [w/ Tamina Snuka] in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Lee grabs a side headlock to start but Bella easily throws her off. Lee charges and goes for a sunset flip but Bella goozles her and throws her into the corner, following up with a scoop slam. Bella whips Lee into the corner but misses a follow-up splash. Lee applies a backpack sleeperhold. She falls to one knee but Bella gets up and rams her into the corner. Lee kicks Bella in the back of the head and covers for a 1-count. Lee goes for a neckbreaker but Bella rolls through and takes her out with a strike, followed by a running clothesline and one-foot dropkick. Bella connects with a back bodydrop then goes for the finish but Snuka distracts her on the apron. Brie attacks Snuka and Nikki accidentally sends Lee into her sister, sending her flying to the floor. Nikki gets distracted, allowing Lee to kick the middle rope into her throat. Lee then slaps on the BLACK WIDOW and eventually she taps.

Winner [via Submission]: AJ Lee (2:37)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Nothing all that spectacular but nothing terrible either. Lee has no serious challengers to her title, despite WWE trying to make it seem like there are with assorted feuds. I think it’ll be an NXT call-up that eventually snatches the gold away…or Snuka. Let’s hope for the former though, okay?

—–

VIDEO: Titus O’Neil turns on Darren Young during last week’s episode of Smackdown.

—–

Titus O’Neil is in the backstage area. He introduces Renee Young as his “guest”. Young asks about attacking Young out nowhere. O’Neil says he teamed with Young for two years, and says he could have won so many championships during that time if they weren’t doing so. O’Neil says Young has a lot of good qualities…like a good hairdo. O’Neil says he looks good, smells good, and has a beautiful smile. O’Neil says moving forward the only weight he’s carrying is WWE Championship gold. O’Neil condescendingly tells Young she did a good job with the interview and tells her to run along. Darren Young pops up and attacks O’Neil as a referee comes in trying to break them up. Young is pried off but then runs back in and attacks some more, resulting in another referee coming in to finally separate them. The camera focuses on the fallen O’Neil as we go to commercial.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: O’Neil took some nasty spills to the concrete during that attack and I may have winced once or twice. This feud is good for the midcard but it’ll be more interesting to see what happens afterwards, as O’Neil showed remarkable babyface charisma…while cutting a heel promo. But again he’s the bigger guy so obviously he has to be the bad one.

“Gold and Smoke” plays as Goldust kneels in the corner. His brother, Cody Rhodes, is next to him on the apron. We cut to a picture-in-picture promo from Goldust & Rhodes shot earlier in the day playing up the fact they are desperate men, and desperate men do desperate things. Two Wyatt Family Jump Cuts later and Bray Wyatt is in his rocking chair, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan standing behind him.

—–

Match #5: Goldust [w/ Cody Rhodes] Vs. Bray Wyatt [w/ Luke Harper & Erick Rowan]

Goldust takes Wyatt to the mat immediately with an armdrag. Wyatt fights back with a kick followed by a series of rights. Goldust dodges a splash attempt but Wyatt stops and bends backwards to stare at him. Goldust ducks a clothesline but eats a running forearm from Wyatt. Wyatt rolls out to the floor and connects with an uppercut followed by a forearm to the back of the neck. Wyatt rolls back in and yells at Rhodes to help his brother. Wyatt connects with a headbutt and covers for 1, then applies a double nervehold immediately after.

Goldust gets to his feet and tries to break out but gets a knee to the gut for his troubles. Goldust gets whipped into the corner, but scales to the second turnbuckle and connects with a handspring back elbow. Goldust mounts a comeback, including the drop down right hand, then goes into the corner mount for a series of right hands. Wyatt reverses a corner Irish whip but eats a boot and Goldust follows up with a second-rope hurricanrana. Wyatt charges and Goldust hits him with a spinebuster. Wyatt bails to the floor and Goldust hits him with a running senton from the apron. Harper and Rowan attack Rhodes, distracting Goldust and allowing Wyatt to attack him from behind. Wyatt drags Goldust to the center of the ring and finishes him off with SISTER ABIGAIL for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Bray Wyatt (3:55)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Wyatt reacting to a missed corner splash by hanging backwards and staring at Goldust was great as was Goldust’s Goldiecanranna from the second rope. Everything else? Not so much. A mostly dull match, which is disappointing because I want Bray Wyatt to have great matches to go along with his transcendent promo abilities.

Post-Match: Rhodes runs in and shields Goldust from further punishment. Wyatt crouches down and talks inaudibly at Rhodes until The Shield appear via TitanTron. Dean Ambrose says it’s cute that The Wyatts think they can call them bickering children. Ambrose says they are the best unit in wrestling and they will own them at Elimination Chamber. Seth Rollins says they aren’t afraid of The Wyatt Family and will scrape their beards off with his boot for costing them their chance to be in the EC match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Roman Reigns says they have methods for making people “understand”. Ambrose concludes with “Believe in the Shield” and the camera focuses on their fists. We go back to the ring where Wyatt, off-mic, says he’ll believe in The Shield when their eyes are battered shut and yells “THE FOOLS! THE FOOOOLS!”.

“Just Close Your Eyes” brings out Christian for the main event. “Voices” brings out his opponent, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton. Another graphic of the Elimination Chamber main event to hype the PPV, plus Cena/Orton on Monday hype.

Main Event: Christian Vs. *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton in a NON-TITLE MATCH (“Randy’s Gauntlet”)

Orton with a side headlock to start. Christian whips him off but gets floored with a shoulderblock. Christian leapfrogs Orton and hits a strike. Orton bails to the corner and regroups. Orton catches Christian with a kick then clubs him down to the mat, throwing in a knee for good measures. Orton peppers Christian’s chest with rapid-fire forearms. Orton walks over and Christian tosses him through the ropes and to the floor. Christian hits a baseball slide but misses a slingshot splash and hits nothing but floor. Orton stares the crowd down a bit then rolls Christian back in. Christian catches Orton with an elbow then backdrops Orton back out to the floor. Christian climbs to the top and hits a flying shoulderblock. Both men are down as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Christian whips Orton into the corner then slides under when Orton attempts a kick. Christian grabs Orton’s legs but waits too long and Orton uses his leg strength to send him face-first into the steel post. Orton connects with a back suplex onto the barricade then rolls Christian back into the ring. He crawls over and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Orton stands on Christian’s ankle then stomps it. Orton then stomps Christian’s face. Orton works Christian over in the corner then whips him into opposite sides, turning Christian into a human pinball. Orton poses, the Wrestlemania XXX sign visible in the background. Subtle.

Christian catches Orton with a right hand but runs into a dropkick and Orton covers for the 1…2…kickout. Orton slaps on a chinlock. Christian gets to his feet and plants him with a back suplex to escape the hold. Both men are down. They get to their feet and trade right hands and strikes. Christian wins the shootout with multiple rights then goes into the corner mount to deliver more. 10 to be exact. Christian whips Orton into the opposite corner, but Orton comes charging out with a clothesline. Christian bails to the apron and hot shots Orton. Christian climbs to the top and connects with a flying crossbody for the 1…2…kickout.

Christian climbs to the middle rope and hits the flying European uppercut. Christian gets the crowd clapping and signals for the Killswitch. He charges and Orton catches him with a powerslam for the 1…2…kickout. Orton throws Christian shoulder-first into the ring post and goes for the hanging DDT. Christian escapes, connects with a slingshot right hand, then heads to the top rope. Christian goes for the Frog Splash but Orton rolls out of the way and this time successfully hits the hanging DDT. Orton soaks in the jeers of the crowd then coils up for the finish. Christian dodges the RKO and rolls Orton up with a backslide for the 1…2…kickout. Orton counters the Killswitch and sends Christian into the corner. Christian climbs to the second rope for another flying European uppercut but Orton counters with the RKO for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Randy Orton (9:02 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: An alright main event. Not much to say other than that really, especially since I’m pretty sure this exact finish has been used before in a previous Orton/Christian match. Could be wrong though. Orton is now 1-1 in his Gauntlet. If he keeps losing to the more important guys while beating the scrubbier ones I’ll probably complain about it on Twitter. At least make it a little unpredictable.

Post-Match: Orton poses with the belts and Cole hypes RAW as we fade to logo.

Overall Show Thoughts

This week’s episode of Smackdown started strong with three good matches in a row, then lost steam as it continued. Not that everything else was all that bad, well the backstage segments sans Titus/Young were, but it just wasn’t all that interesting. A very front-loaded show so if you don’t want to invest a lot of time you can cut out after Bryan/Cesaro.

OPENING VIDEO: A recap of RAW’s big story: Daniel Bryan, John Cena, & Sheamus earning a spot in the Elimination Chamber match via DQ thanks to/because ofThe Wyatt Family’s interference. Their opponents, The Shield, were not happy.

—–

We cut to the arena as “Special Op” brings out The Shield to the ring, Michael Cole quickly welcoming the home audience. We cut to stills from the Royal Rumble where Roman Reigns eliminated 40% of the competitors, breaking the record for most eliminations in a Rumble match. We go back live where each member of The Shield has a mic. Dean Ambrose is up first, saying the Elimination Chamber is a match custom made for them so the stakes on Monday couldn’t have been any higher. Ambrose says that if The Shield was unleashed in the Chamber one of them would have walked out WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Ambrose gets in Reigns’ face, asking if he thinks it would have been him. Reigns says he knows so. Ambrose says he doesn’t think that at all and doesn’t apologize for trying to throw him out of the Rumble. Reigns says he won’t apologize for actually tossing him from the Rumble.

Ambrose and Reigns get in each other’s faces and Seth Rollins gets in between to break them up. He says they are the most dominant force in the WWE and their yard has intruders: The Wyatt Family. Rollins says they are the reason The Shield aren’t in the Chamber match and they must be dealt with. Rollins backs Ambrose up and tells him he’s the greatest US Champ he’s ever seen, then hypes up Reigns for breaking out of the STF. Rollins said they were this close to winning. Ambrose says if The Wyatts want a new world they will give them just that, effectively challenging them for Elimination Chamber.

Vickie Guerrero makes her way out to a chorus of boos. Guerrero says that’s a brilliant idea, a match no one ever dreamed would happen. Guerrero goes to announce the match but “King of Kings” interrupts her, bringing out COO Triple H. He grabs the mic and shoos her away, walking to the ring. Triple H says he understands where they’re coming from, but tells them to let it go. Triple H says there’s no profit in this, nothing to benefit and nothing to gain. Triple H says all there is in this match is loss and more problems. Rollins says with all due to respect he needs to look at it from their perspective. Triple H says that he did look at it from their side, but says that wasn’t a request and once again tells them to let it go. Reigns gets in Triple H’s face, staring him down. Reigns says they aren’t asking for Triple H’s approval. A “ROMAN!” chant breaks out among the Toledo faithful. Triple H says he can see that there’s no way to talk them out of this, and since it’s going to happen he might as well profit out of this. Triple H asks the crowd if it’s what they want, which they do, and he announces that The Shield Vs. The Wyatt Family will happen at Elimination Chamber. Triple H says he hopes they know what they’re doing then exits to the back as his song kicks back up and The Shield bring it in for their fist pose.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A really good segment from The Shield that continued to build their inevitable collapse while also showing how strong and dominant they are as a unit. Reigns staring down Triple H and effectively intimidating him into making the match happen was a subtle but effective way to keep building Reigns as he gets closer and closer to being the breakout star of the group. And the most important part of this all? THE SHIELD WILL BE FACING THE WYATTS. That’s one hell of a match on paper.

SMACKDOWN HYPE GRAPHIC: Christian returns to face Jack Swagger for a spot in the EC match.

—–

We see a split screen of Dolph Ziggler and Antonio Cesaro heading to the ring. They face off for a spot in the EC match next!

-Commercial Break-

—–

We pan down from the Wrestlemania XXX sign to the ring, where Dolph Ziggler is finishing his entrance to the tune of “Here to Show the World“. “Patriot” plays out his opponent Antonio Cesaro, who’s accompanied by Zeb Colter (complete with “Illegals make me Ill” sign).

—–

Match #1: Dolph Ziggler Vs. Antonio Cesaro [w/ Zeb Colter] in an ELIMINATION CHAMBER QUALIFYING MATCH

Cesaro catches Ziggler with a dropkick right as the bell rings, quickly covering for a 2-count. Cesaro argues with the ref and gets rolled up for 2, then they trade multiple quick rollup attempts. Ziggler gets a 2-count with an O’Connor Roll then hits a Fameasser immediately after for another 2-count. Cesaro slides out of the ring to regain his bearings. Ziggler chases him and catches him with a right hand before rolling him into the ring. Ziggler attempts a leapfrog but Cesaro catches him and connects with a backbreaker for 2. Cesaro sends Ziggler into the corner then follows up with a butterfly suplex for a 2-count. Ziggler blocks a right hand and hits a series of his own but runs right into a clothesline and gets sent out to the floor. Cesaro goes to follow up but the ref keeps him away as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Cesaro takes Ziggler to the mat with a rear-chinlock as we return from the break. Cesaro hit a deadlift superplex from the second rope during the commercial (as shown on the WWE App). Ziggler gets to his feet and escapes with a jawbreaker. Ziggler ducks a running clothesline and catches him with a dropkick for 2. Cesaro blocks an Irish whip attempt and catches him with forearms. Ziggler counters a tilt-a-whirl powerslam attempt with a backpack sleeperhold. Cesaro counters that with the deadlift gutwrench suplex. Ziggler ducks a clothesline and counters the Swiss Death uppercut with a DDT for the 1…2…kickout. Ziggler attempts the ZIG ZAG but Cesaro shrugs him off. Cesaro grabs the leg and commences with the CESARO SWING for around 7 rotations. Cesaro cracks his neck and finishes Ziggler off with the NEUTRALIZER for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Antonio Cesaro (5:36 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Disappointingly short but I enjoyed the little we got. The multiple pin attempts at the beginning really sold how important this match was to the both of them and the two had some fun spots (including one that WWE App-only for some reason). Cesaro winning is great and even though he’ll probably be first out at the EC match itself it’s nice to see him get a little nod. As for Ziggler this loss led to the best promo of his life, so hopefully something comes out of that.

We go to the announce table where JBL and Cole talk about the WWE App’s success. Cole then goes into WWE Network hype, and segues into a preview of what to expect.

—–

VIDEO: WWE Countdown, coming soon to the WWE Network. It’s a list show, as decided by the WWE Universe.

—–

ChaChaLaLa” plays as Fandango and Summer Rae conclude their entrance. His opponent, Xavier Woods, is already in the ring…and he has shaved off his goatee. Nice. Cole brings up that Rae will be joining the Total Divas cast for Season 2. R-Truth is at ringside on commentary, and The Funkadactyls are standing nearby. JBL is the cool white guy, Cole is the nerd.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Like you didn’t expect this match to happen at some point this week. Also nice of Truth to be by Woods’ side since Woods couldn’t be bothered to do the same on Main Event.

—–

Match #2: Xavier Woods [w/ R-Truth Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]

Woods grabs a side headlock but gets flattened with a running shoulderblock. Woods leapfrogs Fandango, and Fandango jumps through Woods’ legs. Woods catches him with a dropkick then sweeps the legs. A lateral press doesn’t result in a count. Woods goes for a wheelbarrow move but Fandango turns it into a suplex for 2. Cole says Woods wants to challenge for the US Championship. Fandango meanwhile connects with a short-arm clothesline on Woods for a 2-count then applies a rear-chinlock. Woods escapes but eats a right hand. Woods tries to block a wheelbarrow move instead but this time he connects with it as Truth references that Woods looks like Apollo Creed.

Wood hits a series of strikes followed by a headbutt and roundhouse right. Woods with a savate kick to the midsection followed by a front-facing dropkick that sends him out to the floor. Woods kips up and connects with a somersault plancha. Emma is in the crowd and Rae breaks her sign. Emma pulls out another “#EMMAlution” sign and dances, unfazed. Back in the ring Fandango crotches Woods on the top turnbuckle then connects with a Falcon Arrow for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Fandango (3:15)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Forgettable but inoffensive. Fandango using a Falcon Arrow was pretty cool and I dug R-Truth and JBL referencing Apollo Creed in regards to Xavier Woods. Woods’ indie/TNA gimmick was an Apollo rip-off (“Consequences” Creed) so it was a cute joke. Also when does Emma get to actually wrestle? Also does she just leave after the dancing people are done with their segment(s)? These are things I think about.

Post-Match: Fandango looks to administer more punishment but R-Truth takes him out with a suplex into a seated Ace Crusher. Truth checks on Woods as The Funkadactyls come in. “Somebody Call My Momma” hits and they commence dancing. Woods sort-of joins in but he’s still selling the effects of the match.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Woods just lost the match but okay you guys just go on dancing and pretend nothing happened. I’m getting bored with this happening almost every time a Woods or R-Truth match concludes.

The Prime Time Players conclude their entrance in-ring. Their opponents, Ryback & Curtis Axel, are already in the ring.

—–

Match #3: The Prime Time Players (Darren Young & Titus O’Neil) Vs. Ryback & Curtis Axel

Young and Axel start. Young takes him down with a waistlock then transitions into a front facelock. Axel escapes and they trade hammerlocks. Axel elbows his way out but eats a forearm. Axel backs Young into the heel corner and tags in Ryback. Ryback goes for a right but Young blocks it and hits some of his own until Ryback kicks him and tosses him out to the floor. Ryback distracts the ref and Young fights off an attempted sneak attack by Axel. Ryback catches Young with a right and takes him out with a Meathook Clothesline. Axel tags in and hits his neckbreaker finisher for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Ryback & Curtis Axel (1:30)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I blinked, sorry.

Post-Match: The ref checks on Young as O’Neil looks disappointed and upset on the apron. Young is bleeding from the mouth. O’Neil gets in the ring and sells more frustration. Young gets on the mic and asks where O’Neil is going; they’re a team and more importantly they’re like family. O’Neil says they aren’t family and says ever since they started partnering up he’s been a loser, the first time in his life he’s been considered as such. O’Neil says he’s been a winner all of his life and he came to the WWE to be the man and to be a champion. O’Neil says he’s getting rid of the dead weight of Young off of his back. O’Neil drops the mic and they talk some more off-mic until O’Neil catches him with a big boot. O’Neil jaws at Young and clubs him repeatedly with right hands and stomps, shoving him out to the floor. O’Neil asks Young if he wants to talk and throws him repeatedly into the barricade. O’Neil slaps the out cold Young as the crowd boos. O’Neil walks off.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I’d bemoan the death of The Prime Time Players if they had ever been a relevant tag team. They were going nowhere and doing nothing and this split at least gives them a fighting chance in the singles ranks. To be honest though I didn’t expect O’Neil to be the bad guy; yes he’s the bigger one but he has a ton of face charisma. Still a monster heel Titus O’Neil (I’m Dr. Seuss) may end up being fun to watch. I just don’t hope he and Brodus Clay don’t form a superteam of “big guys in directionless tag teams”.

We cut to the announce table where Cole and JBL talk about what just happened. They then clumsily segue into hyping the WWE Hall Of Fame ceremony with a Ron Simmons reference and introduce the 2nd member of the 2014 class.

—–

HALL OF FAME VIDEO: Jake “The Snake” Roberts, 2nd inductee in the 2014 Class.

Rusev then says, in broken English, “the Rusev Legacy start…now”.

—–

Just Close Your Eyes” brings out a returning Christian to the ring for the next match. His opponent, Jack Swagger, is already in the ring alongside Zeb Colter. This bodes well for him, don’t you think? Cole puts over Steve Austin’s podcast, which features Jim Johnston this week. We then cut to a clip from RAW where Swagger was slapped by Colter to rev him up during the tag team match. Back live JBL calls Colter over to the commentary table to find out why that happened.

—–

Match #4: Christian Vs. Jack Swagger [w/ Zeb Colter] in an ELIMINATION CHAMBER QUALIFYING MATCH

Swagger attacks Christian right at the bell. Christian gets his boots up during a corner splash attempt but his second-rope crossbody attempt is countered into a press slam that sends him over the ring post and onto the floor. Colter says he slapped Swagger to inspire him. Swagger hits Christian with a running knee strike against the barricade then rolls him to cover for a 2-count. Swagger applies a waistlock, Gator Roll-ing him a bit. Christian gets the crowd revved up and escapes but gets sent chest-first into the corner. Swagger trash talks Christian with “ONE MORE MATCH” taunts. Christian responds with a right hand followed by another but runs into a kneelift to the midsection. Swagger follows up with the Swagger Bomb for the 1…2…kickout. Colter promises The Real Americans will own the Chamber.

Swagger stands on Christian’s chest and salutes the crowd. Swagger connects with a right followed by rapid-fire knee strikes to the midsection. Swagger seats Christian on the top turnbuckle and climbs to the middle rope. Christian fights him off, kicks him away, then hits a massive Tornado DDT for the 1…2…kickout. Christian mounts a comeback with right hand, then sends him to the middle rope with a drop toehold. Christian slingshots himself to the floor, catches Swagger with a right, then hits a second-rope missile dropkick for the 1…2…kickout. Christian climbs to the middle turnbuckle again and hits a flying European uppercut. Christian sets up for the Killswitch but Swagger counters with the gutwrench powerbomb for the 1…2…kickout.

Swagger stares at Colter who yells words of advice. Swagger goes for the Swagger Bomb but Christian gets the knees up and rolls him up for the 1…2…kickout. Swagger counters the Killswitch again and catapults him into the mat, locking in the PATRIOT LOCK on the way down. Christian counters with a roll-up for the 1…2…kickout. Christian dodges a corner splash and heads to the top. Swagger meets him at the middle rope but gets sent down and Christian follows up with a FROG SPLASH for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Christian (5:53)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Good return match for Christian, but it was overshadowed by Zeb Colter’s commentary and his little tiff with Jack Swagger. I fully expect Christian to also be eliminated early at the Elimination Chamber but hey you never know.

Post-Match: After a replay of the big moments, we see Christian celebrating on the ramp as Colter angrily throws his vest in the ring.

WRESTLEMANIA XXX HYPE VIDEO: We’re 65 days away (as of this show).

Renee Young catches up with Christian backstage. Christian says he has earned his spot in the Elimination Chamber match, much like he’s earned everything else in his career. Christian says with all of the injuries and miles he’s put on his body his window of opportunity to become champ and headline Wrestlemania has gotten smaller. Christian says he hopes that the desperation he has is mistaken for weakness while he’s going to use it as motivation to become more dangerous than he’s ever been.

—–

We go back to the ring as “SOS” plays and Kofi Kingston poses in the ring. We see a clip of Kingston jumping from barricade to apron at the Royal Rumble. His opponent, Damien Sandow, makes his way out second. We see a still of Sandow being the first man out of the Rumble match, Cole putting over the “downward spiral” that has been his career over the past few months. A picture-in-picture taped promo from Sandow plays, where he says this is just his trial by fire and he will emerge stronger than ever.

—–

Match #5: Kofi Kingston Vs. Damien Sandow

Sandow sweeps the legs and rolls Kingston up for 2, then hits a side Russian legsweep. Sandow whips Kingston into the corner but misses a splash attempt. Kingston makes with the kicks but his Irish whip is reversed and Sandow catches him with a knee to the midsection for 2. Sandow applies an abdominal stretch, clubbing the ribs with his forearm. Kingston escapes then rolls through a sunset flip attempt, catching Sandow with a kick to the face. Kingston hits back to back chops followed by a dropkick. Sandow dodges a corner attack then ducks a crossbody attempt, covering for 2. Sandow yells at the ref then eats a spinkick. He ducks a Trouble in Paradise and Kingston hits nothing but the ropes. Sandow goes for Terminus but Kingston escapes and connects with S.O.S. for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Kofi Kingston (1:56)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Lots of talk about Sandow’s slump and his lack of confidence, and as a Sandow mark it depressed the hell out of me. This match occurred just to keep that story going and the crowd was super quiet the entire time. Jeez.

Gold and Smoke” plays as Cody Rhodes kneels in the ring. His partner and brother Goldust leans over him. Rhodes has his arm taped up from the Lesnar attack. More hype for the tag team cage match. “Oh You Didn’t Know” plays out Rhodes’ opponent, Road Dogg, who’s joined by Billy Gunn. Dogg does his usual schtick and Gunn concludes it as usual. Blah blah blah shut up.

—–

Match #6: Cody Rhodes [w/ Goldust] Vs. Road Dogg [w/ Billy Gunn]

Rhodes backs Dogg in the corner and breaks clean, so Dogg catches him with a kick to the midsection. Rhodes fights back with a misdirection clothesline then rolls out of the ring to seek counsel from Goldust (uh why?). Rhodes reenters the ring and applies a hammerlock. He whips Dogg into the ropes but eats a kick to the face when he tries a backdrop. Dogg backs Rhodes into the corner and works over the taped arm, wrenching it over the top rope. Dogg applies an armbar, sitting over the shoulder for added pressure. Dogg sends Rhodes to the mat  then throws him arm first into the corner. Rhodes fights back with his good arm but Dogg kicks the bad one to stop that.

Dogg applies another armbar as Goldust tries to rev the crowd up for his brother. Rhodes gets sent into the corner and he hits a sunset flip for 2. Rhodes and Dogg collide in the center of the ring and go down. Rhodes ducks a clothesline and hits Dogg with two of his own, followed by a jumping knee strike. Rhodes hits the drop down right hand then kicks him in the midsection. Rhodes heads to the apron and connects with a springboard missile dropkick. Goldust and Gunn brawl on the outside, with the latter getting the advantage. Gunn climbs the apron and eats a dropkick from Rhodes. Dogg rolls Rhodes up for 2, then Rhodes connects with the DISASTER KICK for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Cody Rhodes (3:51)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: God I hope the Rhodes Boys regain the belts on Monday, I don’t know how long I’ll be able to stomach The New Age Outlaws doing actual wrestling things in 2014.

Post-Match: Gunn attacks Rhodes from behind so Goldust attacks him and their brawl spills to the outside. They head back inside as Rhodes and Gunn brawl on the outside. The Outlaws eventually retreat leaving Goldust & Rhodes standing tall in the ring, staring down their impending RAW opponents.

WWE NETWORK HYPE: A video plays previewing “The Monday Night War”, which will focus on the WWE Vs. WCW ratings wars from the late-90s.

The Shield are in the ring when we return from the video, JBL correcting Cole calling his early gimmick “John” instead of “Justin”. Glad someone was paying attention, damn. The Wyatt jumpcut occurs and Bray Wyatt & The Wyatt Family appear on the TitanTron. Wyatt says he admires The Shield’s courage as mere men would lose sleep over having to fight the reapers. Wyatt says he likes games too and war is his favorite. Wyatt says his soul smiles at the thought of The Shield’s quivering hands waving white flags. Luke Harper chimes in, saying The Shield will reap what they sow, and they picked a beautiful hill to die on. Wyatt tells The Shield to be careful inviting the devil in their backyard because he may just like it and decide to stay. Wyatt and Harper leave and Erick Rowan appears via sheep mask, with a simple “RUN!” leading into the jumpcut. —–

Main Event: Daniel Bryan, Rey Mysterio, & Sheamus Vs. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns)

Sheamus takes Rollins to the mat with a side headlock to start. Rollins whips him off but eats a shoulderblock so he tags in Reigns. Reigns grabs a side headlock and Sheamus whips him into the ropes, eating a shoulderblock and crashing to the mat. Reigns trash talks Sheamus a bit as he gets back to his feet. Reigns catches Sheamus with a boot to the gut followed by a right hand and stomps in the corner. Reigns whips Sheamus into the ropes but Sheamus blocks a hip toss attempt and connects with a clothesline followed by a running kick to the mat. Sheamus picks Reigns up just to hit a reverse neckbreaker for a 1-count. Reigns escapes a suplex attempt with a right hand and Ambrose tags himself in.

Ambrose connects with a series of rights and headbutts in the heel corner. Sheamus gets backed to the ropes and whipped into opposite side. Sheamus hits Ambrose with a forearm to the back then lays him over the top rope. Sheamus connects with a high knee, then rolls Ambrose’s vest up for the Forearms of Doom to the exposed chest. Winners [via Pinfall]: The Shield (9:53 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: As with most Shield matches this was an entertaining contest with a fun and frenzied finish. Enjoyed every minute of it and I love Reigns being the one to once again pick up the victory, proving once again he’s the man in the trio. But it was a little weird Daniel Bryan was just sort of…there in the match, especially after his big moments on Monday.

Post-Match: Sheamus and Bryan check on Mysterio as we go into a replay of the big moments from the match. We go back live and The Shield celebrate on the outside, faces looking on in disgust, as we fade to logo.

Overall Show Thoughts

This week’s Smackdown was a busy one to say the least, with some interesting developments (PTP breaking up, Christian’s return) as well as one hell of a main event and Wyatt Family promo. Unfortunately all of the good moments were outweighed by just how packed this episode was as the WWE seemed determined to throw in as much as they could in 90 minutes (if you ignore commercials). Having so much to do in a small timeframe killed some of the developments and made everything feel hectic, and by the end of it I felt like I had sat through a show much longer than the one I actually watched. Still there are some choice moments to check out so make sure to see them…on YouTube. You don’t need to watch the entire episode. I did it for you, because we’re friends!
