Also on the show WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton takes on IC Champ Big E Langston, MizTV welcomes The Big Show as its guest, and a whole bunch more.
Read on for my recap and review of the episode.

A video plays mixing Bray Wyatt‘s show-ending vignette last week with clips of Daniel Bryan in his Wyatt Family debut on Monday.
—–
Pyro goes off and we pan the crowd as Michael Cole welcomes the home audience. The Usos commence with their Siva Tau ritual and entrance to “So Close Now“. After a Wyatt Family jump cut, we go back to the ring where Luke Harper & Erick Rowan are already in the ring. Bray Wyatt is once again not at ringside. Not even his rocking chair could be arsed to show up.

Match #1: The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) Vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan)
Harper and Jimmy start. Harper clubs Jimmy down then follows up with a European uppercut. Jimmy gets a kick in and ducks a clothesline, superkicking him in the gut. Jey tags in and hits a running dropkick, following up with an armbar. Jimmy tags back in but runs into an uppercut right. Rowan tags in and clubs Jimmy in the back. Rowan goes for a slam but Jimmy slides out and connects with a right. Rowan reverses an Irish whip and Jimmy goes for a sunset flip. Rowan doesn’t go down but he misses the legdrop. Jimmy goes for a follow-up but Rowan catapults him into the air and he splatters against the mat. Rowan lays Jimmy on the top turnbuckle and hits a series of forearms across the chest. Harper tags in, does the same, then stomps Jimmy when he falls to the mat.
Harper connects with a double chop followed by a right hand. Rowan tags back in and connects with a right to the midsection while Harper holds his arms. Jimmy fights back with rights and chops, then hits an enziguri to the temple. Harper quickly tags in and prevents the tag by knocking Jey off the apron. Harper then connects with a big boot on Jimmy and covers for the 1…2…kickout. This match continues after the break.
-Commercial Break-
Harper commences with the Gator Roll on Jimmy as we return from the break. Harper transitions into a side headlock as Jey tries to get the crowd rallying. It doesn’t work. Jimmy gets to his feet but gets floored with a back elbow and in comes Rowan. Rowan connects with a scoop slam then uses his fists to crush Jimmy’s head Crush-style. Jimmy escapes with a jawbreaker and gets his boot up during a splash attempt. Jimmy climbs to the top and hits Rowan with Whisper in the Wind, and now both men are down. Harper tags in but so does Jey, and Jey takes it to both Wyatt Family members with leaping clotheslines. Jey hits Harper with a back elbow and follows up with a superkick to the midsection and a right hand. Jey hits Harper with a corner forearm, then connects with a Samoan drop. Jey hits Harper with the running butt splash in the corner, then hits Rowan with a superkick knocking him off the apron. Jey turns around and Harper connects with a Michinoku Driver. Jimmy breaks it up and gets sent out to the floor. Jey sends Harper out to the floor then hits a flying tope, knocking both men out. Jey picks Harper up to put him back in the ring but Rowan hits him with a running forearm from behind. Jimmy splashes Rowan from off the apron, then eats a discus clothesline from Rowan as the ref counts both teams out.
Winners: Double Countout (7:02 shown)
- Jon’s Thoughts: One of those matches were at the end you just sorta shrug and go “alright”. I think these two teams need to take a break from one another.
Post-Match: Harper sends Jimmy flying into the ring steps then wakes Rowan up. The Wyatt Family throw Jimmy into the ring then go for the double team, but Jey runs in and superkicks Harper. Jey ducks a Rowan clothesline and pulls himself and Jimmy out of harms way. After another Wyatt Family jump cut Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan are now laying waste to The Usos in the aisle. Harper and Rowan join in on the fracas. Harper and Bryan send Jimmy into the ring then Bryan hits him with a BUSAIKU KNEE. Bryan makes Wyatt crazy faces off-camera as Cole describes them, then Wyatt takes Jey out with SISTER ABIGAIL. Bryan piles Jimmy on top of Jey and does the kneeling Jesus pose with Wyatt, Harper and Rowan standing in the background, before another Wyatt jump cut concludes the segment.
- Jon’s Thoughts: Weird that the camera didn’t focus on Bryan doing his crazy eye/tongue-wagging schtick; it lost a bit of oomph to have Cole just describe it (or maybe Bryan didn’t do any of that and just had Cole make it up). Interesting that Bryan got to do the Jesus pose with Bray at the end too. I guess they’re co-chiefs of the team? I’m not really digging this alliance so far but that was a cool ending visual.

We go backstage where Smackdown GM Vickie Guerrero is texting or looking at the internet or something on her cell phone. Maybe playing Snake. The sound of a throat clearing causes the camera to pan over, revealing WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton. Orton asks where Triple H & Stephanie are as he needs to speak with them right away. Guerrero says they aren’t here tonight, but Orton continues and says that he made it clear on Monday they needed to consult with him before putting him in any matches. Guerrero tries to tell him it’s best for business but Orton cuts her off and says he’s sick of hearing that. Orton says this Monday on RAW he’s going to give The Authority a piece of his mind because it’s what’s “best for Randy Orton”.
- Jon’s Thoughts: Orton was pretty good here conveying just how much of a petulant spoiled brat he is as World Champion. He’s pretty tolerable in short segments where he isn’t allowed to overexplain and recap his storyline.

MizTV w/ The Big Show
We go to the ring, where The Miz welcomes everyone to his talk segment. Miz says his guest tonight was involved in one of the must-see segments on Old School RAW and we go to the Show/Lesnar/Henry confrontation from Monday while Cole narrates. We go back live where Miz welcomes The Big Show to the ring. “Crank It Up” plays as Show jovially makes his way out.
Miz says when it comes to Brock Lesnar most people run in fear, but Show went after him instead. Miz asks what was going through his mind when he threw Lesnar like a ragdoll. Show says there is only so much crap a person can take before they reach their limit, and the truth is that he doesn’t like Brock Lesnar. Show says he didn’t like Lesnar when he was here before and he likes him even less now that he’s back. Show says everyone is afraid to confront Lesnar because everyone who does ends up like Mark Henry, but last Monday Lesnar was standing in the ring with a giant. Show then challenges Lesnar to a FIGHT. He waits for a second, nothing happens, then challenges him instead.
Instead of Lesnar out comes his advocate Paul Heyman. Heyman introduces himself then says Show isn’t looking to see him, he’s looking to fight his client BRAWWWWWK LESNAR. Heyman calls Lesnar the “Ultimate Fighter” in the WWE then asks if he’d like to fight him right here right now in Philly. Show rips his hoodie off and gets ready. Heyman then says Lesnar does not fight Show when Show wants him to. Heyman tells Show he gets to fight Lesnar when he says he gets to fight him. On behalf of Brock Lesnar, Heyman says that Show may fight him at Royal Rumble. Heyman says that just for the record if Show would like to pick a fight with Lesnar before the PPV, he assures him that Lesnar will not be a hard man to find. Heyman laughs as “Crank It Up” kicks back up.
- Jon’s Thoughts: Unless they’re going to destroy the ring again the idea of a Lesnar/Show match doesn’t really sell me on the Royal Rumble. Should be a decent enough match though, they had a good string of them a decade ago. Wait…yup, a decade ago. I’m old.

A vignette airs hyping Batista’s return on January 20th.
- Jon’s Thoughts: Quick someone in Hollywood offer him a big starring role that somehow nullifies whatever contract he’s signed with the WWE! IT’S NOT TOO LATE.
—–
A vignette airs about the WWE Network announcement at the CES earlier this week.
- Jon’s Thoughts: This times infinity. The WWE Network has all the makings of pro wrestling nirvana. I couldn’t be more excited.

“619” plays as Rey Mysterio concludes his entrance. The Real Americans and Zeb Colter are ringside, Colter holding up one of his anti-immigrant signs right in his face. Mysterio’s partners, Sin Cara and Los Matadores, and The Real Americans’ partners, Curtis Axel & Ryback, have also already been introduced off-camera.
- Jon’s Thoughts: Oh man the face team is Zeb Colter’s nightmare fuel. Los Matadores have already sunk to jobber entrance status. I guess someone finally realized how terrible of a gimmick that is, Torito notwithstanding.
—–
Match #2: Rey Mysterio, Sin Cara, & Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) Vs. Curtis Axel, Ryback, & The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter]
One of the Matadores and Axel starts off. Matador 1 takes Axel down, but Axel responds with a series of kicks and a scoop slam. Axel rakes the eyes of Matador 1, then hits a shoulderblock. Matador 1 leapfrogs Axel, stops him for an “Ole”, then sends him face-first into the corner. Matador 1 follows up with a chop then whips him into the opposite corner. Axel dodges and Matador 1 head stands next to the top turnbuckle (not really on it) before hitting him with a headscissors takedown. Matador 2 tags in and connects with a kick, covering Axel for a 2-count. Axel backs Matador 2 in the corner and tags out to Cesaro. Cesaro floors Matador 2 with a European uppercut then follows up with a scoop slam. Matador 2 all of a sudden hits a spinning headscissors followed by a springboard back splash. Matador 1 tags in as does Axel, but the former gets the advantage. Cara then tags in and takes Axel down. Ryback tags in and eats back to back dropkicks. Mysterio tags in and goes for the 619 but Ryback bails out to the floor. Both teams stare one another down as we go to commercial.
-Commercial Break-
Ryback connects with a scoop slam on Cara as we return from the break but misses the follow-up splash. Cesaro tags in and prevents the tag with a deadlift gutwrench suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro slaps on a rear-chinlock as the crowd tries to cheer Cara on. Cara connects with a jawbreaker but Cesaro hangs onto the leg as Swagger tags in. Swagger takes Cara to the mat with a belly-to-belly suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Cara heads to the apron as Swagger yells at him to go home. Cara blocks a right and hits one of his own. Swagger grabs Cara’s leg and gets kicked off, tagging out Cesaro. Cesaro then goes after Cara, who hits him with a headscissors out of nowhere.
Swagger tags back in but Mysterio also gets the hot tag. Mysterio hits Swagger with a headscissors then connects with a top-rope seated splash for the 1…2…kickout. Swagger connects with a knee strike but eats boots during a Swagger Bomb attempt. Mysterio covers for the 1…2…Ryback breaks it up. Los Matadores hit Ryback with stereo suicidas, then Torito flattens Axel with a top rope splash of his own. Mysterio reverses a Patriot Lock and goes for a 619 but Swagger grabs the legs and connects with a spinebuster for the 1…2…Cara breaks it up. Cara and Cesaro clear one another from the ring. Mysterio counters a powerbomb with a hurricanrana, sending Swagger into the ropes. Mysterio follows up with the 619 followed by the top rope splash for the 1…2…3!
Winners [via Pinfall]: Rey Mysterio, Sin Cara, & Los Matadores (7:01 shown)
- Jon’s Thoughts: An entertaining mess of a match, with a cool 619 counter by Swagger towards the end. I had forgotten about Los Matadores so thanks to this episode for reminding me they are still kicking around.

We return from the break as Orton paces the ring. “I Need Five” brings out his opponent, Intercontinental Champion Big E Langston.

Match #3: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Vs. *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton in a NON-TITLE MATCH
Langston and Orton jockey for position, locked in a collar and elbow tie-up. Langston backs Orton into the corner and breaks clean. Orton grabs a side headlock but get sent into the ropes and flattened with a shoulderblock. Orton slides away from a pinfall attempt then rolls out to the ring to regroup himself. Orton slides back in and gets caught in a side headlock. Orton whips Langston into the ropes, leapfrogs him, but once again gets floored with a shoulderblock. Orton once again bails to the floor while the ref keeps Langston at bay. Orton steps back into the squared circle and connects with a kick to the midsection followed by a headbutt and a series of forearms that bring Langston to the mat. Orton peppers Langston with some jabs then arrogantly stands for a moment before going back to work. Orton connects with a European uppercut and follows up with a headbutt. Orton gets a full head of steam but gets flattened with yet another shoulderblock and Langston covers for a 2-count.
Langston connects with back to back right hands to the midsection then applies a wristlock, attacking the shoulder with forearms. Langston steps over and wrenches the arm behind Orton. Langston rams Orton into the corner and hits a series of shoulderblocks to the midsection until Orton finally gets a knee up to break the combo. Orton clobbers Langston with a forearm and series of headbutts. Langston starts shaking off the strikes then all of a sudden connects with a backbreaker. Langston picks Orton up and connects with a second backbreaker, covering for a 2-count. Orton fights back with forearms but gets sent into the corner off an Irish whip. Langston follows up with a running shoulderblock to the midsection. Orton escapes a slam attempt and once again bails out to the floor for a breather. Langston poses for the crowd then catches Orton attempting to sneak up from behind. Orton slides back out as we go to commercial.
-Commercial Break-
We return from the break, Langston trapped in a rear-chinlock which turns into a side headlock. Langston fights out with elbows but runs right into a knee to the midsection and Orton covers for a 2-count. Orton once again slaps on a rear-chinlock as Cole once again goes nuts for the WWE Network. Feels like this was added in during post-production. Langston fights back but gets sent to the floor by Orton. Orton rams Langston head-first into the steel steps, picks him up, and does it again. Orton rolls Langston back into the ring and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Orton kneels over Langston, looks at the crowd, then slaps on a rear-chinlock.
Langston gets to his feet but gets sent to the corner. Langston gets an elbow up during a corner splash attempt then flattens Orton. Langston fires himself up and takes Orton down with back to back clotheslines followed by a belly-to-belly suplex. Langston gets a running start and connects with the Warrior Splash for the 1…2…kickout. Orton regroups and hits Langston with an over the back backbreaker. Langston bails to the apron so Orton goes for, and connects with, the Hanging DDT. Orton jokingly points to his hear for some crowd response then coils up. Langston fights off the RKO and splashes him in the corner. Langston goes to pick Orton up, but Orton bails back down to the corner. Langston goes to grab him and Orton thumbs him in the eye while the ref is distracted. Orton then follows up with the RKO and covers for the 1…2…3!
Winner [via Pinfall]: Randy Orton (11:03 shown)
- Jon’s Thoughts: A little slow but overall a good match. Orton taking the cheap way out reinforces how much of a chickenshit his character is and it also helped protect Langston a little bit. Best of both worlds. Normally this would be grounds to whine about champions losing non-title matches but when it’s a secondary champion losing to the top champion it’s perfectly fine. The pecking order is there for a reason.

A Wyatt jumpcut brings us backstage to Bray Wyatt, Daniel Bryan, and The Wyatt Family standing in some nondescript backstage area. Wyatt says if he was to break one of the Usos bones would the other one feel it, then asks if they’re done playing hero and if they release they’re living this giant lie. Bryan then yells “LIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!” and says everything they’ve ever been told is a lie. Bryan says it makes him want to ram his head into a wall until he destroys something. Bryan then stares off into the distance and the jump cut concludes things.
- Jon’s Thoughts: Well that was…a thing. I dug Bryan’s intensity but I ended up laughing at this. Oof. Can we go back to August and do everything over?

“Cha Cha La La” concludes as Fandango and Summer Rae conclude their entrance. “Somebody Call My Momma” hits and out comes his opponent Xavier Woods, alongside The Funkadactyls. They do a little dance that concludes with the splits and out jumps R-Truth from behind. That was pretty awesome, actually. We go to a clip from Main Event that explains why this match is happening (Fandango cost Woods his tag team match by coming out and dancing). Truth joins the commentary booth and Cole acts super white.
- Jon’s Thoughts: I threw shade at The Funkadactyls for doing their same routine on Main Event but I take it back now because that new entrance was awesome. Not sure why Woods gets to keep Brodus Clay’s theme music though. Did Clay just forfeit it when he became a main event player? Also where did Clay and Tensai go, they were just brawling last we…you know this probably not the time to bring that up and my eyes are crossing anyway.
—–
Match #4: Xavier Woods [w/ The Funkadactyls & R-Truth] Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]
Fandango with the armdrag takedown to start. He celebrates by dancing, obviously. Woods grabs a side headlock, bringing him to the mat. Fandango whips him into the ropes but Woods ducks back to back clotheslines and connects with a tilt-a-whirl headscissors. Woods does some dancing and Fandango immediately attacks him and tosses him out to the floor. Fandango celebrates by, erm, dancing. Lots of dancing here. Hashtag dancing. Woods gets to the apron, connects with a shoulderblock to the midsection, them jumps in and rolls Fandango up for the 1…2…3!
Winner [via Pinfall]: Xavier Woods (1:24)
- Jon’s Thoughts: I liked the part with the dancing.
Post-Match: Summer Rae gets in Woods’ face so The Funkadactyls trip her up and pull her out of the ring. Fandango attacks Woods, so R-Truth leaves the announce table and attacks. He and Woods take Fandango out with a double dropkick and Fandango falls to the floor. Rae checks on her man as the foursome celebrate by drinking fine wine by the campfire. Just kidding, they danced.

Tom Phillips is standing by backstage with The Usos, who are still in pain from earlier. Jey Uso angrily kicks a chair. Jimmy Uso says they understand what The Wyatts do, taking people out and making them scare, but The Usos stand up and fight back. That’s exactly what they’re gonna do on Monday. Jimmy Uso says they’re going to bring pain to Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan come Monday. The Usos exit to conclude the segment.
- Jon’s Thoughts: Intense promo from Jimmy Uso. Surprised WWE let them talk that never happens. I wouldn’t mind it if they did it more. Good hype for the match on Monday. Also high five to Tom Phillips moving on up in the WWE world!

RAW Rebound: Old School Raw, featuring Ric Flair and Jake “The Snake” Roberts.
- Jon’s Thoughts: So much snake poop on Dean Ambrose. Almost feel bad for the guy.
—–
“Special Op” plays as The Shield make their way out for the main event. We see clips from Reigns beating Punk on Monday. We go back live where Roman Reigns has a live mic (oh no!). Reigns reminds us that Monday was Old School RAW, and subtly mocks Dean Ambrose by mentioning Roddy Piper and Jake Roberts. Reigns says none of that mattered because he beat Punk that night and become the BEST IN THE WOOOOOOORLD. Ambrose is next up and freaks out about snakes and how much he hates them. Ambrose says if the snake was here right now he would choke it to death. Seth Rollins steals the mic and calms him down. Rollins says tonight is not about the history of the WWE, it’s about the future of the WWE. Rollins says one thing he does know is that the future of the WWE does not involve the New Age Outlaws. Rollins says the NAO stuck their nose in Shield business so tonight it’ll be their pleasure to put them out of their misery. Rollins then says as for CM Punk…they’ll just do what they do every time they meet him in the ring: they’ll break him (Rollins puts his arm over Reigns while saying it). Rollins says they are the future of this company and no one can stop them, and concludes with “BELIEVE IN THE SHIELD!”
“Oh You Didn’t Know” brings out The New Age Outlaws, Road Dogg & Billy Gunn. This match is next!
- Jon’s Thoughts: Good promo from The Shield that did a good job subtly teasing the breakup, with Reigns digging at Ambrose with the namedropping of the legends that humiliated him and Rollins choosing to buddy with Reigns when talking about beating up Punk. Ambrose was great as usual with his freak-out about being covered in a snake. What I wouldn’t give to somehow transport an in his prime Jake The Snake to now and have him feud with Ambrose. It’d be the best.

We go back to the ring where The New Age Outlaws don’t do their usual mic schtick because THERE IS A GOD. Their partner, CM Punk, makes his way out next to the tune of “Cult of Personality“.

Main Event: CM Punk & The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) Vs. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns)
Punk and Ambrose start. Punk backs Ambrose into the corner and breaks clean. Ambrose yells then they lock up once more. Ambrose grabs a hammerlock then takes him down with a side headlock. Punk reverses into a headscissors but Punk kicks out of it and connects with a side headlock takedown of his own. Dogg tags in and connects with a right to the ribs. Dogg applies a hammerlock and rams him into the corner. Gunn tags in next and keeps the wristlock applied, twisting the arm. Ambrose escapes with a right and tags in Rollins. Rollins runs into an armdrag takedown. Gunn works the arm over and Dogg tags back in, making sure to do a little jiving before kicking the exposed arm. Punk tags in and does a little jiving of his own before hitting a top rope elbow on the arm. Rollins breaks out with a right hook and tags Ambrose in. Punk takes Ambrose down with a drop toehold then works the leg over. Punk goes for a kick but Ambrose ducks out and bails to the floor. Punk picks Rollins up for a GTS but he escapes. The New Age Outlaws then clear the ring of the two remaining Shield members. We are at a stalemate as we go to commercial.
-Commercial Break-
Ambrose works Dogg over, raking his forearm across the face as we return from commercial. Dogg ducks a clothesline and does his shimmy combo of a series of rights and the forearm drop for a 2-count. I REMEMBER THAT. NOSTALGIA. Rollins gets the blind tag and hits Dogg with a springboard knee strike for the 1…2…Gunn breaks up the count. Reigns tags in and repeatedly stomps Dogg in the corner. Ambrose tags back in and stomps Dogg’s gut while Reigns holds the legs down. Ambrose connects with a straight right hand followed by a series of jabs and a little jive of his own to mock Dogg. Dogg catches Ambrose with a right, but Ambrose fights him off and hits the dropkick against the ropes. Rollins tags in and follows up with a dropkick of his own for the 1…2…kickout.
Rollins traps Dogg in a rear-chinlock to wear him down. Dogg gets to his feet and escapes with some elbows. Dogg goes for another right but Rollins ducks and sends Dogg face-first into the middle turnbuckle. Rollins pulls Dogg into the center of the ring for the 1…2…kickout. Rollins angrily stomps Dogg repeatedly then rips at his face. Ambrose tags in and peppers Dogg with cross forearms, then kicks the middle rope Dogg is laying on to send it into his throat. Ambrose hits a series of shoulderblocks inthe corner until Reigns tags in to floor him with a right hand. Reigns covers for the 1…2…kickout. Reigns immediately slaps on a rear-chinlock. Dogg breaks out and plants Reigns with a DDT. Both men are down.
Rollins tags in and clears Gunn from the apron. Punk ducks the cheapshot and Dogg sends Rollins flying with a backdrop. Punk gets the hot tag as Ambrose tags in, hitting a dropkick and a neckbreaker. Punk hits the corner knee but Ambrose ducks the short-arm clothesline. Punk kicks Ambrose and hits a second-rope crossbody for the 1…2…kickout. Punk goes for teh GTS but Ambrose escapes and they take one another out by both attempting crossbodies. Gunn gets the tag and so does Reigns. Gunn takes Reigns out with two right hands followed by a big boot. Rollins comes in and Gunn plants him with a tilt-a-whirl slam. Gunn connects with a Jackhammer on Reigns for the 1…2…Ambrose breaks the count. Dogg comes in and Ambrose clotheslines him out. Punk comes in and hits Rollins with a suicide dive through the ropes. Gunn goes for the FAMEASSER on Ambrose but Reigns hits him with a SPEAR out of nowhere for the 1…2…3!
Winners [via Pinfall]: The Shield (11:04 shown)
- Jon’s Thoughts: A solid main event, even if The New Age Outlaws being involved killed my buzz at the beginning. To Road Dogg’s credit he sold The Shield’s offense beautifully and was excellent at being the babyface-in-peril. Billy Gunn was…whatever, which is surprising since he’s an NXT trainer now and for a long time had been the only non-HBK/HHH DX member still in shape. Weird. Reigns once again got the win for his team and honestly between that and his boasting of being the new Best in the World he could easily be the one staying heel. That’d be an interesting way to take it.
Post-Match: The Shield celebrate to close the show, with Reigns front and center. That concludes the episode.
*****
Overall Show Thoughts
Outside of the Lesnar/Show announcement this was a lame-duck Smackdown. Every match with meat to it had a commercial break, killing what little momentum they had each damn time, and nothing really stuck out overall. Avoid the hell out of this and go spend your day doing something more constructive.
