CM Punk Reportedly Walks Out on WWE

CM Punk

Some pretty crazy news to report as CM Punk has reportedly walked out on WWE for the foreseeable future. First reported by The Wrestling Observer (PAYWALL ALERT) and expounded upon by PWTorch, Punk walked out on Monday after RAW rewrites ended up taking him off of the show. He is no longer advertised for any house shows/events going forward. Punk last appeared at this past Sunday’s Royal Rumble, going 50 minutes in the Rumble match before being eliminated and chokeslammed through a table by Kane to continue his feud with The Authority heading into Wrestlemania XXX. At this point it doesn’t appear to be storyline-related but with pro wrestling you never can tell.

If this is indeed true, and this is a full walk-out instead of an extended break, this is pretty devastating. CM Punk is who brought me back into pro wrestling obsession after nearly a decade of only casually keeping up with the industry. But hey if the dude’s burned out and he’s got the cash to take a powder, then I won’t begrudge him. I would probably do the same thing in his position; why force yourself to do a job you’re burned out on when you can say “screw it” and enjoy the things you’re passionate about?

More on this news at it develops, despite the fact I really hope this is all made up and he’s not really gone because goddammit I’m a Punk mark and don’t want it to be a thing that’s happening.

‘WWE Royal Rumble 2014’ Results + Notes – New Tag Team Champs, Pittsburgh Gets Indifferently Rowdy

CREDIT = WWE.com

CREDIT = WWE.com

Date: January 26, 2014

Venue: CONSOL Energy Center (Pittsburgh, PA)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

Last night WWE held its first PPV of the year, Royal Rumble, live from Pittsburgh and it’ll be remembered just as much for the crowd as it will be for the results, which you can check out below courtesy of Jason Powell‘s much more interesting and detailed recap/analysis over at ProWrestling.net.

1. Rumble Royal Kickoff: The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) defeated Cody Rhodes & Goldust (c) to win the WWE Tag Team Titles when Gunn pinned Rhodes with the FAMEASSER (6:30).

2. Bray Wyatt defeated Daniel Bryan via pinfall with SISTER ABIGAIL (21:30).

3. Brock Lesnar [w/ Paul Heyman] defeated The Big Show via pinfall with the F-5 (2:00).

  • Before the Match: Lesnar beat up Show with a whole host of chair shots before the bell even rang. The fact that the match happened anyway is a bit suspect.
  • Post-Match: Lesnar repeatedly walloped Show with more chairshots, think Rock/Mankind from ’99 but not to the head, until he got bored and left. Show then left on his two feet with minimal help from the trainer and refs, which was surprising.

4. Randy Orton (c) defeated John Cena via pinfall with the RKO to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (20:55).

  • The Finish: Cena seemed to have things in order until Bray Wyatt and The Wyatt Family showed up, causing a distraction that led to Orton’s victory.
  • Post-Match: The Wyatt Family attacked Cena some more before Bray finished him off with SISTER ABIGAIL.
  • Notes: The Pittsburgh crowd turned on this match completely, chanting for Daniel Bryan and eventually going into “This is Awful”.

4. Batista won the 2014 Royal Rumble, last eliminating Roman Reigns (55:10).

  • Order of Entry: CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Damien Sandow, Cody Rhodes, Kane, Alexander Rusev (making his main roster debut sans Lana), Jack Swagger, Kofi Kingston (who had two “near elimination” goof spots), Jimmy Uso, Goldust (who was eliminated by his own brother), Dean Ambrose, Dolph Ziggler (return from concussion), R-Truth, Kevin Nash, Roman Reigns (who ended up tying Kane’s record of 11 eliminations, including his Shield stablemates), The Great Khali, Sheamus (return from year-long injury), The Miz, Fandango, El Torito, Antonio Cesaro, Luke Harper, Jey Uso, JBL (quickly eliminated), Erick Rowan, Ryback, Alberto Del Rio, Batista, Big E Langston, Rey Mysterio (who was met uncharacteristically with boos since he wasn’t Daniel Bryan)
  • Post-Match: Batista celebrated and pointed to the WM XXX sign as the crowd mostly booed.
  • Notes: Once it was clear Daniel Bryan was not going to be in the Rumble the Pittsburgh crowd turned on this match and took turns chanting his name and booing. Batista was met with the same reaction while celebrating. Let’s see if WWE listens.

Word of advice to the WWE: listen to the fans. Pittsburgh isn’t an isolated incident, it’s just the loudest.

‘WWE RAW’ 1/20/14 Results + Notes – Batista Returns, Kingston Vs. Orton, Show and Lesnar Brawl Some More

WWE RAW logo

Venue: Nutter Center (Dayton, OH)

Commentators: Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, & JBL

This week’s RAW featured the return of Batista, another Big Show/Brock Lesnar confrontation, fallout from Randy Orton‘s “savage” attack on John Cena‘s Dad, Daniel Bryan explaining why he turned against The Wyatt Family prematurely, CM Punk battling Billy Gunn, and even some Royal Rumble hype for added flavor.

Read on for results and notes from the show, gathered from James Caldwell‘s much more interesting and detailed coverage/review over at PWTorch.

Match Results/Notes

1. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns) defeated *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston and *WWE Tag Team Champions* Cody Rhodes & Goldust when Rollins pinned Langston (10:40).

2. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] defeated Xavier Woods [w/ R-Truth] via pinfall with the top-rope legdrop (1:07).

  • Notes: NXT Diva Emma was once again spotted in the crowd dancing to continue that storyline-ish.

3. CM Punk defeated Billy Gunn [w/ Road Dogg] via pinfall with the GTS (8:57).

  • Before The Match: CM Punk had an in-ring verbal altercation with Kane, who was forced to apologize for chokeslamming him on Smackdown. Kane apologized a host of times before Punk kneed him out of the ring. An angry Kane was held back by Brad Maddox who brought out The New Age Outlaws. Gunn and Dogg did a rock/paper/scissor to decide who would face Punk in a singles match, which Gunn won.
  • Post-Match: Kane got on the mic and announced that Punk would be entrant #1 in the Royal Rumble this Sunday.

4. Alberto Del Rio defeated Rey Mysterio via submission with the CROSS ARMBREAKER (14:47).

  • Post-Match: Batista made his way out to the ring. Del Rio went for the attack but ate a spinebuster and a Batista Bomb, answering for all of the trash talking he’s done over the past few weeks.

5. The Funkadactyls (Cameron & Naomi) defeated *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee & Tamina Snuka when Naomi pinned Lee with a roll-up (2:27).

  • Before The Match: In a WWE App segment Wade Barrett gave Lee some bad news about no one liking her, then Josh Matthews jumped in for an interview. Lee tried to throw a cake at Matthews but he moved and she hit Snuka instead. Snuka came out still covered in cake and Lee had to calm her down in-ring.

6. The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) defeated The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan) [w/ Bray Wyatt] with a roll-up on Harper (12:32).

  • Notes: Daniel Bryan made his way out and beat up on Bray Wyatt and caused the distraction leading to the Usos win.
  • Post-Match: Bryan and The Usos celebrated with “YES!” chants on the entrance stage as Bray looked on, smiling his creepy smile.

7. Non-Title Match: Kofi Kingston and *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton fought to a no-contest when John Cena interfered (5:09).

  • Post-Match: Cena brawled with Orton through the crowd and to the outside of the building where a getaway car drove Orton to safety. Cena made his way back through the people and posed in the ring to end the episode.

Segments/Other Notes

-The show opened with Triple H & Stephanie McMahon in-ring. After they hyped this Sunday’s Royal Rumble, out came Randy Orton. Steph berated him for making the WWE look bad by attacking John Cena Sr. last week. Orton said he did it out of frustration and anger towards The Authority, saying that since he’s become the face of the WWE the focus has instead been on the Network and talent returning. Triple H told him to calm it down then said he had to make things right with John Cena, showing that a camera was placed outside the arena waiting his arrival for Orton to see. Batista then strolled out, told Orton he was gunning for that title no matter who had it, then said he was going to win the Royal Rumble on Sunday and main event Wrestlemania XXX.

Daniel Bryan cut an in-ring promo, explaining that his plan all along was to infilitrate The Wyatt Family and get to Bray Wyatt mentally. Bryan then announced that he and Wyatt will go one-on-one at the Royal Rumble this Sunday. Bray Wyatt appeared on the TitanTron and told Bryan that everything that happens from here on out is his own fault.

The Big Show called out Brock Lesnar to the ring. Paul Heyman came first followed by Lesnar, and then the two went to leave. Show eventually goaded Lensar to the ring and the two had another brawl in which Show came off as more physically dominant while Lesnar seethed at ringside and threw chairs. Nothing much here by the sounds of it.

-Announced for the Royal Rumble: Daniel Bryan Vs. Bray Wyatt and Cody Rhodes & Goldust will defend their Tag Team Titles against The New Age Outlaws during the kickoff special.

-WWE: Then. Now. Forever.-

We go “live” to the arena as Michael Cole welcomes the home audience. “Oh You Didn’t Know” brings out The New Age Outlaws for the opening contest. We cut to the announce table where Cole is joined by usual partner JBL and special guest The Miz. We see clips of NAO turning on CM Punk at RAW. We cut back to the ring where Road Dogg has a live mic. He does the usual NAO intro. “Gold and Smoke” brings out their opponents, the WWE Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes & Goldust.

—–

Match #1: *WWE Tag Team Champions* Cody Rhodes & Goldust Vs. The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Goldust and Dogg start. Dogg backs Goldust into the corner and tries for a cheap shot but Goldust ducks and catches him with a right hand. Dogg offers his hand then kicks Goldust in the gut. He commences with the dance jabs but Goldust ducks the final and connects with rights of his own. Goldust hits a couple of rights in the corner mount until Dogg knocks him. Dogg whips Goldust into the corner, who jumps to the middle turnbuckle and catches him with a back elbow. Gunn tags in and gets backdropped out to the floor veeeeery sloooowly. Dogg tags in and tries to send Rhodes off the apron but he blocks it and hits a right. Dogg turns around and runs into a powerslam.

Gunn tags in but so does Rhodes. Rhodes catches Gunn with back to back clotheslines followed by the drop down jab. Rhodes rolls Gunn up in the corner sunset flip but he kicks out immediately. Dogg tries to intervene and Rhodes hits them both with a springboard missile dropkick. Rhodes covers for the 1…2…Dogg interferes. Goldust clotheslines him and himself out to the floor. Gunn catches Rhodes with an elbow and goes for the FAMEASSER but Rhodes escapes and goes for the Cross Rhodes. Gunn counters and takes Rhodes down with a tilt-a-whirl slam, covering for the 1…2…kickout. Gunn picks Rhodes up and goes for the Fameasser again but Rhodes ducks out, ducks a clothesline, then hits Gunn with the DISASTER KICK.

An “EXCUUUUSE ME!” brings out Vickie Guerrero. Guerrero is here to remind everyone that the Royal Rumble match happens in 9 days and it’ll be everyone for themselves. She brings up that Rhodes and Goldust will even have to face one another, and this distraction allows Gunn to roll Rhodes up for the 1…2…3.

Winners [via Pinfall]: The New Age Outlaws (4:43)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Dumb ending to a dull match and the worse team got the victory to boot. I didn’t like anything about this one except for JBL shutting down every joke attempt from The Miz. He might just kill him by the end of the show.

—–

Backstage Interview Area

Renee Young is standing by with CM Punk. Young says she’s heard rumors that he’s calling out all three members of The Shield. Punk confirms the rumor then walks off.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Is this a rerun?

We go to a different area backstage where Paul Heyman is walking around. He’s coming out to the ring next!

Paul Heyman: Hype Machine

Paul Heyman makes his way out to the ring with no music. Heyman introduces himself, then says he stands before the WWE Universe as the advocate for BRAWWWWWK LESNAR. Heyman brings up Big Show throwing Lesnar across the ring from a few weeks ago (the crowd cheers) and says it’s part of the conspiracy BRAWWWWK LESNAR has been dealing with since he got here. Heyman says Lesnar got into a fight with Mark Henry and after fulfilling the “Eat, Sleep, Conquer, Repeat” mantra he was attacked by Show. Heyman says Show gave everyone the misleading impression that Show could be physically dominant over Lesnar. Heyman runs off Show’s physical stats then says at Royal Rumble BRAWWWWK LESNAR will conquer him. Heyman says he has been through many wars, and all of them with BRAWWWWK LESNAR by his side, then says he fears no evil for Lesnar walks next to him. Heyman says that’s why Show may try to attack with someone like Zeb Colter but not him because of who he’s with.

Crank It Up” brings out The Big Show and Heyman doesn’t seem very confident anymore. Heyman tells Show to stop where he is and says Show doesn’t try this with him. Show runs into the ring and Heyman immediately runs and bails through the crowd. Show asks why Heyman is running if he’s so scared and fears no evil. Show says he knows Heyman and Lesnar are scared because of what happened, then we cut to Show throwing Lesnar across the ring from two weeks ago on Old School RAW. We go back live and Show says he knows Heyman is scared and lying through his yellow teeth. Show says he has a message for Lesnar: at Royal Rumble he’s knocking him out. “Crank It Up” plays as Show stares Heyman down.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A good enough segment due to Paul Heyman’s once in a lifetime ability to sell any match he wants to. The whole “Show can win because he threw Brock Lesnar once” basis for this is a little weak though, especially since there’s a whole history of these two going at it in WWE’s past. It’s like the WWE is afraid of bringing up that Brock Lesnar was an actual pro wrestler at one point before he became an MMA guy.

Eva Marie announces that Rey Mysterio will face Alberto Del Rio next before blowing a kiss. What.

After another video hyping Batista’s return (this Monday!), we cut to a scowling Alberto Del Rio in the ring, “Realeza 2013” playing in the background. We see a clip from Del Rio beating Rey Mysterio on Monday and cutting another Batista promo. Speak of the devil Mysterio is his opponent tonight as well and “619” plays him out to the joy of the DCU Center. Cole hypes Mysterio, Del Rio, and Miz all being in the Rumble match. Mysterio grabs a mic and says he can see in Del Rio’s eyes that he’s worried about Batista returning on Monday when he should be worried about their match right now.

—–

Match #2: Rey Mysterio Vs. Alberto Del Rio

Del Rio attacks right at the bell, choking him against the middle rope and ripping Mysterio’s t-shirt off. Del Rio goes for a kick but Mysterio dodges and he flies out to the floor. Mysterio hits a baseball kick on Del Rio then slides under the ring and splashes onto Del Rio. Mysterio rolls Del Rio in as JBL calls Miz a “one hit wonder”. Mysterio climbs to the top and Del Rio trips him up, trapping him in a tree of woe. Del Rio hits a running kick and Mysterio crashes to the mat. Del Rio is in control as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Mysterio catches Del Rio with a top-rope seated senton as we return from the break. Mysterio goes for the 619 but Del Rio gets up and connects with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker instead. Del Rio covers for a 2-count then goes for a sunset flip but Mysterio rolls through and kicks him in the head for a 2-count. Mysterio climbs to the top and Del Rio connects with an enziguri to knock him back to the mat. Del Rio covers for the 1…2…kickout. Del Rio postures to the crowd a little bit then goes for the Cross Armbreaker. Mysterio escapes and hits Del Rio with a tornado DDT for the 1…2…kickout. Del Rio connects with an armbreaker out of nowhere but Mysterio rolls through the Cross Armbreaker and sends Del Rio into the middle rope off an armdrag. Mysterio connects with the 619 but Del Rio gets the knees up when attempts the follow-up top-rope splash. Both men struggle to their feet. Del Rio pulls down his kneepad and goes for a running strike but Mysterio ducks it and rolls him up for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Rey Mysterio (4:49 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Surprising result considering Del Rio is headed towards a showdown with Batista and Mysterio is just treading water until another injury unfortunately happens. Also why did Del Rio pull down his kneepad if he was going for a kick?

Post-Match: Del Rio attacks Mysterio from behind then locks in the CROSS ARMBREAKER as the official tries to break him free. Del Rio lets go and rolls to the outside to stare down the crowd. “Realeza 2013” kicks back up as Del Rio jaws at the audience a bit.

Somebody Call My Momma” plays as The Funkadactyls make their way out to the ring and Cole shills the Royal Rumble. Naomi is the one in action. We see clips from Monday where AJ Lee pinned Cameron during a tag team match. Tamina Snuka then attacked Cameron some more before Naomi cleared the ring. We cut to a shot of the crowd where NXT Diva Emma is dancing in the crowd holding up an “#EMMATAINING” sign. “Let’s Light It Up” brings out Naomi’s opponent, Tamina Snuka, accompanied by Divas Champ AJ Lee. Cole announces that Lee is now the longest-reigning Divas Champ of all-time.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Can’t wait for Emma to finally debut on the main roster. She’s awesome.

—–

Match #3: Naomi [w/ Cameron] Vs. Tamina Snuka [w/ *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee]

Snuka picks Naomi up and seats her on the top rope before shoving her off and onto the floor. Naomi has been eliminated from the Royal Rumble. Snuka goes to the outside and rolls Naomi back into the ring. Snuka stomps Naomi and whips her into the ropes. She goes for a back bodydrop but Naomi lands face-first super awkwardly, almost folding like an accordian. Snuka covers Naomi for a 1-count then applies a chinlock, driving the knee into the spine for added pressure. Snuka slingshots Naomi throat-first into the middle rope then whips her hard into the corner. Snuka brings Naomi out of the corner, and Naomi catches her with a right and back elbow. Naomi ducks a clothesline and catches Snuka with a spinning leg lariat. Lee trash talks on the apron as Naomi hits Snuka with a Bubba Bomb. Cameron attacks Lee and Snuka gets distracted, allowing Naomi to roll her up for the 1…2…kickout. Naomi hits Snuka with an enziguri then connects with a split-legged moonsault for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Naomi (2:35)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Awkward landing on that backdrop-ish aside this was a good showing from Naomi. She’s got one of the more entertaining movesets of the Divas division.

After some WWE Network hype we cut to the announce table where Cole, JBL, & The Miz segue into a video focusing on Daniel Bryan’s turn back to the good side on RAW.

Bray Wyatt Speaks on Daniel Bryan

The Wyatt jump cut takes us out of the clip. “Live In Fear” plays as Bray Wyatt & The Wyatt Family make their way out to the ring. Wyatt sits in his rocking chair and blows out the not fire-based lantern. He stands then the trio make their way into the ring. A “DANIEL BRYAN!” chant immediately breaks out. Wyatt says as a child he wanted nothing more in life than to be powerful like his father and did his best to appease him. Wyatt says he tried to be just like him but it was never good enough, and he was never there for him. Wyatt calls the crowd “sheeple” and mocks them by bleeting. Wyatt says that his father, instead of trusting him with the kingdom, betrayed and deceived him sending him out to walk among the sheep. Wyatt says he always knew he was destined for greater things and while he was calling for help while trapped in that deep dark hole Abigail “saved” him, giving him hope and singing to him. Wyatt says he became enthralled with her beauty and obsessed with her power. Wyatt says that Abigail told him that on his path to righteousness he would be deceived again.

Wyatt says that on Monday he saw and felt the moment that Abigail had talked about; the moment where he had to sacrifice himself so he could be resurrected into the creature he was supposed to be. Wyatt says he’s already dead and Bryan’s foolish attempt to stab him in the back did nothing. Wyatt says he does not bleed like one of the people. Wyatt says that Daniel Bryan was given every chance to walk with the Reapers and now he will burn with the saints. Wyatt throws the mic, kneels down Christ-like, and mouths “Follow the Buzzards”.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Amazing promo from Bray Wyatt that acted both as a warning shot to Daniel Bryan and as a way to further build his character. Goddammit I love The Wyatt Family so much, they are on a completely different level than the rest of the WWE.

—–

Backstage Interview Area

Renee Young is standing by once again with CM Punk. Young says she’s also heard that Punk wants to call out The New Age Outlaws in addition to The Shield, and asks him which she wants. Punk says he wants all five superstars. Young asks if that’s career suicide and Punk says it’s more of a gift, a chance for The Authority to shut him up. Punk says it’s an opportunity to get what they want and one day he’ll get the opportunity to get what he wants.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: CM Punk also called me out as well but they edited that part out of television.

The Bella Twins appear via Diva introduction interstatial hyping the next match between Big E Langston and Fandango. One of the Bellas coaches the other on how to correctly say Fandango.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: …Kill me.

—–

Big E Langston is already on the ring apron as we return to the arena. “I Need Five” plays as he concludes his entrance. “ChaChaLaLa” brings out Summer Rae who heralds the coming of Langston’s opponent Fandango. Cole hypes the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame to take place the night before Wrestlemania XXX. Langston watches the entrance at ringside with a bemused look on his face.

—–

Match #4: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Langston rolls in and the bell rings. Fandango gets in a right hand but his Irish whip attempted is reversed. Langston picks Fandango up and delivers a backbreaker. Fandango immediately bails out to the floor as Cole goes through the rules of a Royal Rumble match. Fandango runs back in and hits a series of strikes followed by a European uppercut. Langston leap frogs a running Fandango and hits a shoulder tackle, followed by a running corner shoulderblock to the midsection. Langston tries to do it again but runs into a pair of knees instead. Fandango kicks Langston out to the floor. Fandango grabs Langston’s arm between the post and whips him shoulder-first into the steel before sending him flying into the barricade.

Fandango works the injured wing over with kneedrops, then connects with a series of right hands as Rae happily claps at ringside. Fandango applies an armbar. Langston whips Fandango off but eats a dropkick and Fandango covers for a 1-count. Fandango follows up with a short-arm clothesline then reapplies the armbar. Langston gets to his feet and takes Fandango out to the floor with an armdrag. Fandango climbs to the apron and Langston hits him with a running knee. Fandango runs in and eats back to back clotheslines followed by a belly-to-belly suplex. Langston gets a running head start and hits the Warrior Splash. Langston measures Fandango and goes for the Big Ending but Fandango escapes. Fandango hits Langston with a kick but eats a midsection right hand when he attempts a second-rope move. Langston follows up with a running bodyblock, pulls the straps down, then finishes off Fandango with the BIG ENDING for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Big E Langston (4:17)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Yay Langston beat a guy he already beat when it mattered more a few weeks ago! If you can’t tell the wrestling on this show is boring me to tears. Miz and JBL almost coming to blows on commentary twice now has been pretty funny though, even if it distracts from the action at hand. In the case of this week’s show I’ll allow it.

Backstage Interview Area

Renee Young is standing by with The Shield. Young asks if they have any plan to remain a cohesive unit in the Royal Rumble match itself. Dean Ambrose says the real question is how the 27 competitors are gonna try to compete against their well-oiled machine. Young presses further, asking Ambrose if it came down to it would he throw Seth Rollins out to win the match. Ambrose asks Young if he looks untrustworthy then says he wouldn’t do it because they are best friends. Rollins cuts in and says while that’s nice, he knows Ambrose couldn’t do it anyway and he would toss him out in a second to win. Ambrose says he was kidding and would throw him out and the two start arguing before Roman Reigns shuts them up with a stare. Reigns says it’s about main eventing Wrestlemania and would throw both of them over the top in an instant. Regardless one of them will win and they will still be united…as The Shield.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A simple but effective storyline for the Royal Rumble match. I dug it. Felt old school in a way.

Patriot” kicks up, bringing out The Real Americans who wheel Zeb Colter out. Colter is wearing a neck brace, selling the effects of Big Show’s totally unwarranted KO Punch from Monday. The wheelchair starts careening down the ramp and his eyes bug out until Cesaro and Swagger catch him. We even see a clip of Show’s punch from RAW. Still looks unprovoked and ridiculous. We cut back to ringside where Colter has a mic. Colter says he’s hurting and in pain, thanks to a big bully named The Big Show. Colter says he hopes Brock Lesnar treats Show the same way he treated him. Colter then does the “WE! THE PEOPLE!”. Their opponents, The Usos, make their way out next to “So Close Now” after the Siva Tau ritual.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Colter was hilarious here and the wheelchair spot at the beginning had me, erm, rolling (it really is the best word so whatever f*ck it). WWE trying to sell Show hitting a senior citizen for no reason as funny though is stupid and no one with a brain should agree with that.

Match #5: The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) Vs. The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter]

The Usos are wearing a bunch of tape due to the effects of the cage match on Monday. Jimmy and Swagger start. Swagger gets the advantage early, throwing Jimmy into the heel corner. Cesaro tags in and stomps Jimmy in the taped ribs before hitting the running shoulderblock to the midsection. Cesaro follows up with a European uppercut then tags Swagger back in. Swagger aims his knee strikes at Jimmy’s ribs then tags Cesaro back in who kicks right at them. Quick tag back to Swagger. Jimmy fights out of the corner but gets sent to the corner during a tag attempt. Cesaro tags in and Swagger launches him into Jimmy in the corner. Awesome. Cesaro covers Jimmy for a 2-count. Cesaro connects with a series of strikes to the ribs, concluding with a kick. They are in control as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Jimmy tries for a tag but Cesaro stops him, sending him to the mat, then applies the GIANT SWING for 10 revolutions. Colter gets dizzy watching it. Swagger tags in and hits Jimmy with a belly-to-belly slam, covering for the 1…2…kickout. Swagger applies a front facelock. Cole tries to call Colter’s toughness in question by mocking his wheelchair. Dick. Jimmy fights both Real Americans off then hits Cesaro with a top-rope Whisper in the Wind. Jey gets the hot tag and floors Swagger with back to back clotheslines followed by a midsection clothesline and right hand. Swagger reverses an Irish whip but eats a shoulderblock. Jey hits Swagger with the corner butt bomb and covers for the 1…2…kickout.

Jey attempts a superkick but Swagger catches it. Jey ducks a clothesline attempt and hits a Samoan drop for the 1…2…Cesaro breaks it up. Cesaro kicks Jimmy off the apron and Jey clotheslines him out to the floor. Swagger slaps on the PATRIOT LOCK to Jey, keeping him in the center of the ring. Jimmy breaks it up with a superkick. Cesaro runs in and he and Jimmy fight to the outside, Cesaro hiding behind Colter. Colter trips Jimmy and he and Cesaro high five. Jimmy sends Cesaro into the barricade then turns to the injured Colter. BOOOOOOOO. Jimmy grabs the wheelchair and rams him right into Cesaro. Jey takes Swagger out with an electric chair then tags in Jimmy who hits Swagger with a SUPERFLY SPLASH for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Usos (6:08 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A paint by numbers match with a comedy spot featuring Colter thrown in (which I admittedly smiled at, even if the thought of the good guys taking advantage of weak old people makes my blood boil). Entertaining but forgettable.

Post-Match: The Usos celebrate while The Real Americans check on their fallen compadre.

CM Punk Calls Out The Shield & The New Age Outlaws

Cult of Personality” brings out CM Punk for the final segment of the episode (FINALLLLLY). He’s dressed to wrestle which is strange since he’s not wrestling. Put on some pants, Punk! The music dies down and a “CM PUNK” chant immediately breaks out. Punk says he’s not out here because he’s a masochist, he’s out here because he’s not a coward…like The Authority. Punk says he’s also not an idiot, although it might seem like he is because he’s ready to call out five tough S.O.B.s. Punk says it doesn’t matter what he does or who he calls out because The Authority will do everything in their power to shut him up. Punk says when he talks people listen and that’s real power. Punk circles the ring with the mic to soak in the cheers and chants from the crowd.

Punk says when he says Authority he specifically means Triple H, a man who lucked into a position of power and uses said power to crush anyone under his oppressive heel in an attempt to feed his massive ego and personal agenda. Punk says Triple H is somebody who hides behind his wife…and The Shield.

“Special Op” plays out The Shield. The trio make their way through the crowd. They surround the ring as “Oh You Didn’t Know” plays out The New Age Outlaws. All five men climb the apron and Punk arms himself with the mic. Before anything can happen out comes Kane. Kane yells at the five men to stand down, and stand down they do. Kane gets in the ring and says The Authority doesn’t want it this way. Kane says Punk’s anger is misplaced and his paranoia is getting the better of him. Kane says The Authority want him to main event Wrestlemania which is why they entered him into the Royal Rumble match. Kane says his top directive is to make sure Punk is treated justly and with the respect he deserves…and that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Kane gives Punk his word then leaves the ring.

Punk tells Kane’s word used to mean something but it doesn’t now that it comes out of a 7 foot tall sellout suck-up. Kane turns and stares at him angrily. Kane says “GET ‘EM BOYS” and the five climb the apron again. Kane then runs into the ring and chokeslams Punk. Kane stands over Punk as his theme song plays and the show concludes.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Really good segment to end the show, adding a wrinkle to the impending Punk/Triple H feud. I’m getting more invested into the impending Punk/Triple H storyline than I expected to be, and Kane’s involvement increases the interest even further since he’s finally going to be doing something. Feels like he’s just been background fodder since turning corporate, a definite dropping of the ball of WWE’s part not to capitalize on such an abrupt and interesting character change.

*****

Overall Show Thoughts

The closing segment and Bray Wyatt’s promo were great, and there were some bright spots in a few matches here and there, but overall this Smackdown felt like it took forever to end. The matches weren’t bad (save for the opening contest, but that’s probably because of my bias) but they weren’t interesting either and the few storyline-continuing nuggets weren’t enough to warrant investing my time into both hours of the show. WWE probably has the important clips up on YouTube, go check those out instead. It’ll be quicker.

‘WWE RAW’ 1/13/14 Results + Notes – A Night of Betrayals (Good and Bad), Randy Orton Vs. Kofi Kingston, The Big Show Hates Old People

WWE RAW logo

Venue: Dunkin Donuts Center (Providence, RI)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

This week’s RAW was one for the ages as Daniel Bryan concluded the episode breaking free of the Wyatt Family spell (that lasted two weeks) and causing the Providence crowd to go insane as he finally got his hands on Bray Wyatt. But before we got there the two teamed up to face The Usos not once, but twice, the latter happening in a steel cage. Also on the show The Big Show punched out a senior citizen, the first inductee into the 2014 WWE Hall Of Fame was announced, Randy Orton faced Kofi Kingston in non-title action, an NXT Diva made her sort-of debut, and CM Punk teamed once again with The New Age Outlaws to take on The Shield…again.

Read on for results and notes from the show, culled from James Caldwell‘s far more detailed and insightful coverage/analysis over at PWTorch.

Match Results/Notes

1. The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) defeated Daniel Bryan & Bray Wyatt via DQ when Luke Harper & Erick Rowan interfered (5:38).

  • Post-Match: Wyatt told Bryan to get on his feet, whispered something in his ear, then hit him with SISTER ABIGAIL. Wyatt said he did that for the fans, then he left as Harper & Rowan dragged Bryan with them.

2. John Cena defeated Damien Sandow via pinfall with the ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT (10:28).

  • Post-Match: Cena stopped to embrace his father at ringside.

3. The Big Show defeated Jack Swagger [w/ Antonio Cesaro Zeb Colter] via pinfall with the CHOKESLAM (1:19).

  • Post-Match: Show laid Colter out with the KO Punch despite never being provoked by the manager. How nice of him.

4. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns) defeated CM Punk & The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) when Reigns pinned Punk with the SPEAR (15:38).

  • Notes: The New Age Outlaws bailed on the match towards the end, leaving Punk defenseless against the three men he beat in a handicap match at TLC.
  • Post-Match: The Shield hit their Triple Powerbomb on Punk and posed over him.

5. *WWE Divas Champion* AJ Lee & Tamina Snuka defeated The Funkadactyls (Cameron & Naomi) when Lee pinned Cameron (2:50).

  • Notes: Before the bell rang the camera cut to a shot of NXT Diva Emma who was in the crowd with an “#EMMALUTION” sign. The commentators made note of this so consider this her introduction to the main roster.
  • Post-Match: Snuka went for hurt Cameron more but Naomi came in and helped clear the ring of Snuka and Lee.

6. Non-Title Match: Kofi Kingston defeated *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton via pinfall with the S.O.S. (16:43).

  • Post-Match: Frustrated at his surprise loss Orton freaked out at ringside then punched the hell out of John Cena Sr. until he was pushed away by an official. Cena came out, chased Orton away, then checked on his Dad with the paramedics. Cena Sr. would later be shown being put in an ambulance, screaming in pain.

7. Non-Title Match: *WWE Tag Team Champions* Cody Rhodes & Goldust defeated Curtis Axel & Ryback when Rhodes pinned Axel with the CROSS RHODES (6:04).

  • Notes: Cole mentioned Ryback’s recent Twitter rantings, which made for an entertaining weekend if you were following along.

8. Alberto Del Rio defeated Rey Mysterio via submission with the CROSS ARMBREAKER (4:57).

  • Post-Match: Del Rio got on the mic and once again vowed to throw Batista out of the Royal Rumble match.

9. Cage Match: The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) defeated Daniel Bryan & Bray Wyatt [w/ Luke Harper & Erick Rowan] by escaping the cage (10:50).

  • Post-Match: Bray Wyatt tried to hit Daniel Bryan with another SISTER ABIGAIL, but this time Bryan shrugged him off as the crowd went insane. Bryan sidestepped a splash attempt by Wyatt and hit a series of corner dropkicks as the “YES!” chants got deafening. Bryan took off his Wyatt Family mechanic outfit, revealing his actual wrestling gear underneath, then hit the BUSAIKU KNEE on Wyatt and celebrated with the crowd who went out of their minds. Watch the video. It was awesome.

Segments/Notes

-After the first tag team match ended in a DQ Brad Maddox vowed to fix it by booking Usos/Bryan & Wyatt in a cage match. Kane then added that it should be padlocked shut with only him having the key. Possible foreshadowing for next week’s show…

The Ultimate Warrior was announced as the first member of the 2014 class of the WWE Hall Of Fame.

-After being abandoned by The New Age Outlaws CM Punk found Kane backstage and asked where The Authority were. Kane cut off his ranting by saying he could main event Wrestlemania XXXif he won the Royal Rumble match in two weeks. Punk said he had no problem entering the Rumble but he did have a problem with Kane.

-Royal Rumble participants announced tonight: Cody Rhodes, Goldust, Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, R-Truth, Big E Langston, CM Punk (in his own segment, listed above), and The Miz.

A video plays mixing Bray Wyatt‘s show-ending vignette last week with clips of Daniel Bryan in his Wyatt Family debut on Monday.

—–

Pyro goes off and we pan the crowd as Michael Cole welcomes the home audience. The Usos commence with their Siva Tau ritual and entrance to “So Close Now“. After a Wyatt Family jump cut, we go back to the ring where Luke Harper & Erick Rowan are already in the ring. Bray Wyatt is once again not at ringside. Not even his rocking chair could be arsed to show up.

—–

Match #1: The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) Vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan)

Harper and Jimmy start. Harper clubs Jimmy down then follows up with a European uppercut. Jimmy gets a kick in and ducks a clothesline, superkicking him in the gut. Jey tags in and hits a running dropkick, following up with an armbar. Jimmy tags back in but runs into an uppercut right. Rowan tags in and clubs Jimmy in the back. Rowan goes for a slam but Jimmy slides out and connects with a right. Rowan reverses an Irish whip and Jimmy goes for a sunset flip. Rowan doesn’t go down but he misses the legdrop. Jimmy goes for a follow-up but Rowan catapults him into the air and he splatters against the mat. Rowan lays Jimmy on the top turnbuckle and hits a series of forearms across the chest. Harper tags in, does the same, then stomps Jimmy when he falls to the mat.

Harper connects with a double chop followed by a right hand. Rowan tags back in and connects with a right to the midsection while Harper holds his arms. Jimmy fights back with rights and chops, then hits an enziguri to the temple. Harper quickly tags in and prevents the tag by knocking Jey off the apron. Harper then connects with a big boot on Jimmy and covers for the 1…2…kickout. This match continues after the break.

-Commercial Break-

Harper commences with the Gator Roll on Jimmy as we return from the break. Harper transitions into a side headlock as Jey tries to get the crowd rallying. It doesn’t work. Jimmy gets to his feet but gets floored with a back elbow and in comes Rowan. Rowan connects with a scoop slam then uses his fists to crush Jimmy’s head Crush-style. Jimmy escapes with a jawbreaker and gets his boot up during a splash attempt. Jimmy climbs to the top and hits Rowan with Whisper in the Wind, and now both men are down. Harper tags in but so does Jey, and Jey takes it to both Wyatt Family members with leaping clotheslines. Jey hits Harper with a back elbow and follows up with a superkick to the midsection and a right hand. Jey hits Harper with a corner forearm, then connects with a Samoan drop. Jey hits Harper with the running butt splash in the corner, then hits Rowan with a superkick knocking him off the apron. Jey turns around and Harper connects with a Michinoku Driver. Jimmy breaks it up and gets sent out to the floor. Jey sends Harper out to the floor then hits a flying tope, knocking both men out. Jey picks Harper up to put him back in the ring but Rowan hits him with a running forearm from behind. Jimmy splashes Rowan from off the apron, then eats a discus clothesline from Rowan as the ref counts both teams out.

Winners: Double Countout (7:02 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: One of those matches were at the end you just sorta shrug and go “alright”. I think these two teams need to take a break from one another.

Post-Match: Harper sends Jimmy flying into the ring steps then wakes Rowan up. The Wyatt Family throw Jimmy into the ring then go for the double team, but Jey runs in and superkicks Harper. Jey ducks a Rowan clothesline and pulls himself and Jimmy out of harms way. After another Wyatt Family jump cut Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan are now laying waste to The Usos in the aisle. Harper and Rowan join in on the fracas. Harper and Bryan send Jimmy into the ring then Bryan hits him with a BUSAIKU KNEE. Bryan makes Wyatt crazy faces off-camera as Cole describes them, then Wyatt takes Jey out with SISTER ABIGAIL. Bryan piles Jimmy on top of Jey and does the kneeling Jesus pose with Wyatt, Harper and Rowan standing in the background, before another Wyatt jump cut concludes the segment.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Weird that the camera didn’t focus on Bryan doing his crazy eye/tongue-wagging schtick; it lost a bit of oomph to have Cole just describe it (or maybe Bryan didn’t do any of that and just had Cole make it up). Interesting that Bryan got to do the Jesus pose with Bray at the end too. I guess they’re co-chiefs of the team? I’m not really digging this alliance so far but that was a cool ending visual.

—–

We go backstage where Smackdown GM Vickie Guerrero is texting or looking at the internet or something on her cell phone. Maybe playing Snake. The sound of a throat clearing causes the camera to pan over, revealing WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton. Orton asks where Triple H & Stephanie are as he needs to speak with them right away. Guerrero says they aren’t here tonight, but Orton continues and says that he made it clear on Monday they needed to consult with him before putting him in any matches. Guerrero tries to tell him it’s best for business but Orton cuts her off and says he’s sick of hearing that. Orton says this Monday on RAW he’s going to give The Authority a piece of his mind because it’s what’s “best for Randy Orton”.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Orton was pretty good here conveying just how much of a petulant spoiled brat he is as World Champion. He’s pretty tolerable in short segments where he isn’t allowed to overexplain and recap his storyline.

MizTV w/ The Big Show

We go to the ring, where The Miz welcomes everyone to his talk segment. Miz says his guest tonight was involved in one of the must-see segments on Old School RAW and we go to the Show/Lesnar/Henry confrontation from Monday while Cole narrates. We go back live where Miz welcomes The Big Show to the ring. “Crank It Up” plays as Show jovially makes his way out.

Miz says when it comes to Brock Lesnar most people run in fear, but Show went after him instead. Miz asks what was going through his mind when he threw Lesnar like a ragdoll. Show says there is only so much crap a person can take before they reach their limit, and the truth is that he doesn’t like Brock Lesnar. Show says he didn’t like Lesnar when he was here before and he likes him even less now that he’s back. Show says everyone is afraid to confront Lesnar because everyone who does ends up like Mark Henry, but last Monday Lesnar was standing in the ring with a giant. Show then challenges Lesnar to a FIGHT. He waits for a second, nothing happens, then challenges him instead.

Instead of Lesnar out comes his advocate Paul Heyman. Heyman introduces himself then says Show isn’t looking to see him, he’s looking to fight his client BRAWWWWWK LESNAR. Heyman calls Lesnar the “Ultimate Fighter” in the WWE then asks if he’d like to fight him right here right now in Philly. Show rips his hoodie off and gets ready. Heyman then says Lesnar does not fight Show when Show wants him to. Heyman tells Show he gets to fight Lesnar when he says he gets to fight him. On behalf of Brock Lesnar, Heyman says that Show may fight him at Royal Rumble. Heyman says that just for the record if Show would like to pick a fight with Lesnar before the PPV, he assures him that Lesnar will not be a hard man to find. Heyman laughs as “Crank It Up” kicks back up.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Unless they’re going to destroy the ring again the idea of a Lesnar/Show match doesn’t really sell me on the Royal Rumble. Should be a decent enough match though, they had a good string of them a decade ago. Wait…yup, a decade ago. I’m old.

A vignette airs hyping Batista’s return on January 20th.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Quick someone in Hollywood offer him a big starring role that somehow nullifies whatever contract he’s signed with the WWE! IT’S NOT TOO LATE.

—–

A vignette airs about the WWE Network announcement at the CES earlier this week.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: This times infinity. The WWE Network has all the makings of pro wrestling nirvana. I couldn’t be more excited.

619” plays as Rey Mysterio concludes his entrance. The Real Americans and Zeb Colter are ringside, Colter holding up one of his anti-immigrant signs right in his face. Mysterio’s partners, Sin Cara and Los Matadores, and The Real Americans’ partners, Curtis Axel & Ryback, have also already been introduced off-camera.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Oh man the face team is Zeb Colter’s nightmare fuel. Los Matadores have already sunk to jobber entrance status. I guess someone finally realized how terrible of a gimmick that is, Torito notwithstanding.

—–

Match #2: Rey Mysterio, Sin Cara, & Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) Vs. Curtis Axel, Ryback, & The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter]

One of the Matadores and Axel starts off. Matador 1 takes Axel down, but Axel responds with a series of kicks and a scoop slam. Axel rakes the eyes of Matador 1, then hits a shoulderblock. Matador 1 leapfrogs Axel, stops him for an “Ole”, then sends him face-first into the corner. Matador 1 follows up with a chop then whips him into the opposite corner. Axel dodges and Matador 1 head stands next to the top turnbuckle (not really on it) before hitting him with a headscissors takedown. Matador 2 tags in and connects with a kick, covering Axel for a 2-count. Axel backs Matador 2 in the corner and tags out to Cesaro. Cesaro floors Matador 2 with a European uppercut then follows up with a scoop slam. Matador 2 all of a sudden hits a spinning headscissors followed by a springboard back splash. Matador 1 tags in as does Axel, but the former gets the advantage. Cara then tags in and takes Axel down. Ryback tags in and eats back to back dropkicks. Mysterio tags in and goes for the 619 but Ryback bails out to the floor. Both teams stare one another down as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Ryback connects with a scoop slam on Cara as we return from the break but misses the follow-up splash. Cesaro tags in and prevents the tag with a deadlift gutwrench suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro slaps on a rear-chinlock as the crowd tries to cheer Cara on. Cara connects with a jawbreaker but Cesaro hangs onto the leg as Swagger tags in. Swagger takes Cara to the mat with a belly-to-belly suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Cara heads to the apron as Swagger yells at him to go home. Cara blocks a right and hits one of his own. Swagger grabs Cara’s leg and gets kicked off, tagging out Cesaro. Cesaro then goes after Cara, who hits him with a headscissors out of nowhere.

Swagger tags back in but Mysterio also gets the hot tag. Mysterio hits Swagger with a headscissors then connects with a top-rope seated splash for the 1…2…kickout. Swagger connects with a knee strike but eats boots during a Swagger Bomb attempt. Mysterio covers for the 1…2…Ryback breaks it up. Los Matadores hit Ryback with stereo suicidas, then Torito flattens Axel with a top rope splash of his own. Mysterio reverses a Patriot Lock and goes for a 619 but Swagger grabs the legs and connects with a spinebuster for the 1…2…Cara breaks it up. Cara and Cesaro clear one another from the ring. Mysterio counters a powerbomb with a hurricanrana, sending Swagger into the ropes. Mysterio follows up with the 619 followed by the top rope splash for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Rey Mysterio, Sin Cara, & Los Matadores (7:01 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: An entertaining mess of a match, with a cool 619 counter by Swagger towards the end. I had forgotten about Los Matadores so thanks to this episode for reminding me they are still kicking around.

We return from the break as Orton paces the ring. “I Need Five” brings out his opponent, Intercontinental Champion Big E Langston.

—–

Match #3: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Vs. *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Langston and Orton jockey for position, locked in a collar and elbow tie-up. Langston backs Orton into the corner and breaks clean. Orton grabs a side headlock but get sent into the ropes and flattened with a shoulderblock. Orton slides away from a pinfall attempt then rolls out to the ring to regroup himself. Orton slides back in and gets caught in a side headlock. Orton whips Langston into the ropes, leapfrogs him, but once again gets floored with a shoulderblock. Orton once again bails to the floor while the ref keeps Langston at bay. Orton steps back into the squared circle and connects with a kick to the midsection followed by a headbutt and a series of forearms that bring Langston to the mat. Orton peppers Langston with some jabs then arrogantly stands for a moment before going back to work. Orton connects with a European uppercut and follows up with a headbutt. Orton gets a full head of steam but gets flattened with yet another shoulderblock and Langston covers for a 2-count.

Langston connects with back to back right hands to the midsection then applies a wristlock, attacking the shoulder with forearms. Langston steps over and wrenches the arm behind Orton. Langston rams Orton into the corner and hits a series of shoulderblocks to the midsection until Orton finally gets a knee up to break the combo. Orton clobbers Langston with a forearm and series of headbutts. Langston starts shaking off the strikes then all of a sudden connects with a backbreaker. Langston picks Orton up and connects with a second backbreaker, covering for a 2-count. Orton fights back with forearms but gets sent into the corner off an Irish whip. Langston follows up with a running shoulderblock to the midsection. Orton escapes a slam attempt and once again bails out to the floor for a breather. Langston poses for the crowd then catches Orton attempting to sneak up from behind. Orton slides back out as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

We return from the break, Langston trapped in a rear-chinlock which turns into a side headlock. Langston fights out with elbows but runs right into a knee to the midsection and Orton covers for a 2-count. Orton once again slaps on a rear-chinlock as Cole once again goes nuts for the WWE Network. Feels like this was added in during post-production. Langston fights back but gets sent to the floor by Orton. Orton rams Langston head-first into the steel steps, picks him up, and does it again. Orton rolls Langston back into the ring and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Orton kneels over Langston, looks at the crowd, then slaps on a rear-chinlock.

Langston gets to his feet but gets sent to the corner. Langston gets an elbow up during a corner splash attempt then flattens Orton. Langston fires himself up and takes Orton down with back to back clotheslines followed by a belly-to-belly suplex. Langston gets a running start and connects with the Warrior Splash for the 1…2…kickout. Orton regroups and hits Langston with an over the back backbreaker. Langston bails to the apron so Orton goes for, and connects with, the Hanging DDT. Orton jokingly points to his hear for some crowd response then coils up. Langston fights off the RKO and splashes him in the corner. Langston goes to pick Orton up, but Orton bails back down to the corner. Langston goes to grab him and Orton thumbs him in the eye while the ref is distracted. Orton then follows up with the RKO and covers for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Randy Orton (11:03 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A little slow but overall a good match. Orton taking the cheap way out reinforces how much of a chickenshit his character is and it also helped protect Langston a little bit. Best of both worlds. Normally this would be grounds to whine about champions losing non-title matches but when it’s a secondary champion losing to the top champion it’s perfectly fine. The pecking order is there for a reason.

A Wyatt jumpcut brings us backstage to Bray Wyatt, Daniel Bryan, and The Wyatt Family standing in some nondescript backstage area. Wyatt says if he was to break one of the Usos bones would the other one feel it, then asks if they’re done playing hero and if they release they’re living this giant lie. Bryan then yells “LIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!” and says everything they’ve ever been told is a lie. Bryan says it makes him want to ram his head into a wall until he destroys something. Bryan then stares off into the distance and the jump cut concludes things.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Well that was…a thing. I dug Bryan’s intensity but I ended up laughing at this. Oof. Can we go back to August and do everything over?

“Cha Cha La La” concludes as Fandango and Summer Rae conclude their entrance. “Somebody Call My Momma” hits and out comes his opponent Xavier Woods, alongside The Funkadactyls. They do a little dance that concludes with the splits and out jumps R-Truth from behind. That was pretty awesome, actually. We go to a clip from Main Event that explains why this match is happening (Fandango cost Woods his tag team match by coming out and dancing). Truth joins the commentary booth and Cole acts super white.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I threw shade at The Funkadactyls for doing their same routine on Main Event but I take it back now because that new entrance was awesome. Not sure why Woods gets to keep Brodus Clay’s theme music though. Did Clay just forfeit it when he became a main event player? Also where did Clay and Tensai go, they were just brawling last we…you know this probably not the time to bring that up and my eyes are crossing anyway.

Match #4: Xavier Woods [w/ The Funkadactyls & R-Truth] Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]

Fandango with the armdrag takedown to start. He celebrates by dancing, obviously. Woods grabs a side headlock, bringing him to the mat. Fandango whips him into the ropes but Woods ducks back to back clotheslines and connects with a tilt-a-whirl headscissors. Woods does some dancing and Fandango immediately attacks him and tosses him out to the floor. Fandango celebrates by, erm, dancing. Lots of dancing here. Hashtag dancing. Woods gets to the apron, connects with a shoulderblock to the midsection, them jumps in and rolls Fandango up for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Xavier Woods (1:24)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I liked the part with the dancing.

Post-Match: Summer Rae gets in Woods’ face so The Funkadactyls trip her up and pull her out of the ring. Fandango attacks Woods, so R-Truth leaves the announce table and attacks. He and Woods take Fandango out with a double dropkick and Fandango falls to the floor. Rae checks on her man as the foursome celebrate by drinking fine wine by the campfire. Just kidding, they danced.

Tom Phillips is standing by backstage with The Usos, who are still in pain from earlier. Jey Uso angrily kicks a chair. Jimmy Uso says they understand what The Wyatts do, taking people out and making them scare, but The Usos stand up and fight back. That’s exactly what they’re gonna do on Monday. Jimmy Uso says they’re going to bring pain to Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan come Monday. The Usos exit to conclude the segment.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Intense promo from Jimmy Uso. Surprised WWE let them talk that never happens. I wouldn’t mind it if they did it more. Good hype for the match on Monday. Also high five to Tom Phillips moving on up in the WWE world!

-Commercial Break-

—–

RAW Rebound: Old School Raw, featuring Ric Flair and Jake “The Snake” Roberts.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: So much snake poop on Dean Ambrose. Almost feel bad for the guy.

—–

Special Op” plays as The Shield make their way out for the main event. We see clips from Reigns beating Punk on Monday. We go back live where Roman Reigns has a live mic (oh no!). Reigns reminds us that Monday was Old School RAW, and subtly mocks Dean Ambrose by mentioning Roddy Piper and Jake Roberts. Reigns says none of that mattered because he beat Punk that night and become the BEST IN THE WOOOOOOORLD. Ambrose is next up and freaks out about snakes and how much he hates them. Ambrose says if the snake was here right now he would choke it to death. Seth Rollins steals the mic and calms him down. Rollins says tonight is not about the history of the WWE, it’s about the future of the WWE. Rollins says one thing he does know is that the future of the WWE does not involve the New Age Outlaws. Rollins says the NAO stuck their nose in Shield business so tonight it’ll be their pleasure to put them out of their misery. Rollins then says as for CM Punk…they’ll just do what they do every time they meet him in the ring: they’ll break him (Rollins puts his arm over Reigns while saying it). Rollins says they are the future of this company and no one can stop them, and concludes with “BELIEVE IN THE SHIELD!”

“Oh You Didn’t Know” brings out The New Age Outlaws, Road Dogg & Billy Gunn. This match is next!

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Good promo from The Shield that did a good job subtly teasing the breakup, with Reigns digging at Ambrose with the namedropping of the legends that humiliated him and Rollins choosing to buddy with Reigns when talking about beating up Punk. Ambrose was great as usual with his freak-out about being covered in a snake. What I wouldn’t give to somehow transport an in his prime Jake The Snake to now and have him feud with Ambrose. It’d be the best.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

We go back to the ring where The New Age Outlaws don’t do their usual mic schtick because THERE IS A GOD. Their partner, CM Punk, makes his way out next to the tune of “Cult of Personality“.

—–

Main Event: CM Punk & The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) Vs. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns)

Punk and Ambrose start. Punk backs Ambrose into the corner and breaks clean. Ambrose yells then they lock up once more. Ambrose grabs a hammerlock then takes him down with a side headlock. Punk reverses into a headscissors but Punk kicks out of it and connects with a side headlock takedown of his own. Dogg tags in and connects with a right to the ribs. Dogg applies a hammerlock and rams him into the corner. Gunn tags in next and keeps the wristlock applied, twisting the arm. Ambrose escapes with a right and tags in Rollins. Rollins runs into an armdrag takedown. Gunn works the arm over and Dogg tags back in, making sure to do a little jiving before kicking the exposed arm. Punk tags in and does a little jiving of his own before hitting a top rope elbow on the arm. Rollins breaks out with a right hook and tags Ambrose in. Punk takes Ambrose down with a drop toehold then works the leg over. Punk goes for a kick but Ambrose ducks out and bails to the floor. Punk picks Rollins up for a GTS but he escapes. The New Age Outlaws then clear the ring of the two remaining Shield members. We are at a stalemate as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Ambrose works Dogg over, raking his forearm across the face as we return from commercial. Dogg ducks a clothesline and does his shimmy combo of a series of rights and the forearm drop for a 2-count. I REMEMBER THAT. NOSTALGIA. Rollins gets the blind tag and hits Dogg with a springboard knee strike for the 1…2…Gunn breaks up the count. Reigns tags in and repeatedly stomps Dogg in the corner. Ambrose tags back in and stomps Dogg’s gut while Reigns holds the legs down. Ambrose connects with a straight right hand followed by a series of jabs and a little jive of his own to mock Dogg. Dogg catches Ambrose with a right, but Ambrose fights him off and hits the dropkick against the ropes. Rollins tags in and follows up with a dropkick of his own for the 1…2…kickout.

Rollins traps Dogg in a rear-chinlock to wear him down. Dogg gets to his feet and escapes with some elbows. Dogg goes for another right but Rollins ducks and sends Dogg face-first into the middle turnbuckle. Rollins pulls Dogg into the center of the ring for the 1…2…kickout. Rollins angrily stomps Dogg repeatedly then rips at his face. Ambrose tags in and peppers Dogg with cross forearms, then kicks the middle rope Dogg is laying on to send it into his throat. Ambrose hits a series of shoulderblocks inthe corner until Reigns tags in to floor him with a right hand. Reigns covers for the 1…2…kickout. Reigns immediately slaps on a rear-chinlock. Dogg breaks out and plants Reigns with a DDT. Both men are down.

Rollins tags in and clears Gunn from the apron. Punk ducks the cheapshot and Dogg sends Rollins flying with a backdrop. Punk gets the hot tag as Ambrose tags in, hitting a dropkick and a neckbreaker. Punk hits the corner knee but Ambrose ducks the short-arm clothesline. Punk kicks Ambrose and hits a second-rope crossbody for the 1…2…kickout. Punk goes for teh GTS but Ambrose escapes and they take one another out by both attempting crossbodies. Gunn gets the tag and so does Reigns. Gunn takes Reigns out with two right hands followed by a big boot. Rollins comes in and Gunn plants him with a tilt-a-whirl slam. Gunn connects with a Jackhammer on Reigns for the 1…2…Ambrose breaks the count. Dogg comes in and Ambrose clotheslines him out. Punk comes in and hits Rollins with a suicide dive through the ropes. Gunn goes for the FAMEASSER on Ambrose but Reigns hits him with a SPEAR out of nowhere for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Shield (11:04 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A solid main event, even if The New Age Outlaws being involved killed my buzz at the beginning. To Road Dogg’s credit he sold The Shield’s offense beautifully and was excellent at being the babyface-in-peril. Billy Gunn was…whatever, which is surprising since he’s an NXT trainer now and for a long time had been the only non-HBK/HHH DX member still in shape. Weird. Reigns once again got the win for his team and honestly between that and his boasting of being the new Best in the World he could easily be the one staying heel. That’d be an interesting way to take it.

Post-Match: The Shield celebrate to close the show, with Reigns front and center. That concludes the episode.

*****

Overall Show Thoughts

Outside of the Lesnar/Show announcement this was a lame-duck Smackdown. Every match with meat to it had a commercial break, killing what little momentum they had each damn time, and nothing really stuck out overall. Avoid the hell out of this and go spend your day doing something more constructive.

‘WWE Old School RAW’ 1/6/14 Results + Notes – Ric Flair Confronts Randy Orton, Piper’s Pit w/ The Shield, Punk Vs. Reigns, ‘The Snake’ Surprises

WWE RAW logo

Venue: Baltimore Arena (Baltimore, MD)

Commentators: Michael Cole & JBL

The first RAW of 2014 carried the “Old School” theme and boy did they run with it: from having Ric Flair open the show to featuring a Piper’s Pit segment with Roddy Piper grilling The Shield, the nostalgia was in full force. But other stuff happened on the show including a big Royal Rumble announcement, Brock Lesnar once again targeting Mark Henry, the debut of Daniel Bryan‘s new “Wyatt Family” look, and much more.

Read on for results and notes from the show, culled from James Caldwell‘s much more detailed and interesting coverage/review over at PWTorch.

Match Results

1. Rey Mysterio The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) defeated Daniel Bryan The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan) [w/ Bray Wyatt] when one of the Usos pinned Luke Harper with a roll-up (8:40).

  • Notes: This was Daniel Bryan’s “coming out” as a member of The Wyatt Family. He wore garbage man-style blue overalls and held a stone-faced demeanor for the segment. Bryan also had a more vicious streak with his offense. The conclusion of the match saw Harper tag himself in and getting rolled up while he was distracted telling Bryan to get out of the ring.
  • Post-Match: Bray Wyatt confronted Luke Harper about what happened.

2. Non-Title Match: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston defeated Curtis Axel [w/ Ryback] via pinfall with the BIG ENDING (2:43).

  • Before the Match: Langston stalked the halls, passing by legends like Nikolai Volkoff (singing the Russian national anthem), Ted DiBiase (doing his laugh), and I.R.S. (talking about taxes) in an effort to drive the “GET IT, IT’S OLD SCHOOL RAW” message across to those watching at home.
  • Notes: Ryback was on commentary for the match to sell a potential showdown with Langston in the future. It was brought up that Ryback has never won a singles title and he didn’t take kindly to it.

3. Alberto Del Rio defeated Sin Cara via pinfall (2:17).

  • Post-Match: Del Rio announced that he was gonna take part in the Royal Rumble match and promised to be the one to throw Batista out of the ring.

4. Non-Title Match: *WWE Tag Team Champions* Cody Rhodes & Goldust defeated The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter] when Goldust pinned Jack Swagger with the FINAL CUT (11:44).

5. The Great Khali [w/ Ranjin Singh] defeated Damien Sandow via pinfall with the BRAIN CHOP (1:58).

  • Notes: Sgt. Slaughter was voted as the special guest ref for the match via the WWE App. The other two candidates were Bob Backlund and Arn Anderson.
  • Post-Match: Sandow argued with Slaughter, saying his foot was under the bottom rope (it was), and shoved him. Slaughter then applied the Cobra Clutch, knocking him out. Slaughter, Khali, and Singh proceeded to dance. I hope this is cut out of the Hulu version of Raw.

6. Aksana & Alicia Fox defeated The Bella Twins (Nikki & Brie Bella) when Fox pinned Brie (3:48).

7. Rikishi Too Cool (Grandmaster Sexay & Scotty 2 Hotty) defeated 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre) when Rikishi pinned Mahal (5:23).

  • Notes: This was Slater’s return to the WWE and to 3MB, and a picture in promo played before the match to announce their “reunion”.
  • Post-Match: Too Cool did their dance because old school.

8. Roman Reigns [w/ *WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose Seth Rollins] defeated CM Punk via pinfall with the SPEAR (16:23).

  • Before the Match: “Mean” Gene Okerlund cracked a Hotline joke on stage then introduced The New Age Outlaws. Road Dogg did his “old school” introduction because duh.
  • Post-Match: The Shield commenced with a beatdown on Punk until Jake “The Snake” Roberts surprisingly made his way out to the ring. The New Age Outlaws dispensed of Reigns and Rollins as Punk laid Ambrose out with the GTS. Roberts then laid the snake over Ambrose and that concluded the episode.

(Important) Segments and Other Notes

Ric Flair opened the show and said some words before WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton interrupted him. Orton said some nice words about Flair then talked about himself a bit, saying Cena didn’t deserve a rematch at the Royal Rumble. Flair told him to man up and Orton called him the most overrated superstar in history. All of this hulabaloo was interrupted by John Cena who came out, said some words, then got ready to fight. Orton bailed out of the ring instead. Cena and Flair hugged as Orton posed with his championships.

Roddy Piper hosted a “Piper’s Pit” with special guests The Shield. Piper goaded Dean Ambrose saying the only man who could match “Hot Rod” on the mic was CM Punk. He then said neither Ambrose or Rollins could beat Punk one-on-one then turned to Roman Reigns and asked him if he would be considered better than his Shield stablemates if he defeated Punk tonight. Things almost got physical but CM Punk and The New Age Outlaws (?!?) made their way out to ignite a six-man brawl instead.

Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman had another in-ring segment. They hyped up his impending WWE World Heavyweight Championship shot until Mark Henry made his way back out, favoring his ribs after last week. Lesnar proceeded to lock him in the Kimura and “snapped” the arm. The Big Show then made his way out and eventually sent Lesnar flying when he attempted to attack from behind. Show sold stoic determination.

Jerry Lawler wasn’t on commentary due to a stomach virus caused by bad food. He explained as much on the WWE App.

-Other legends featured throughout the show included The Godfather, “Diamond” Dallas Page, Booker T, and many more.

Batista was announced as an entrant into the 2013 Royal Rumble, and will return to RAW in two weeks to hype that up.

-Announced for next week’s RAW: Daniel Bryan teams with Bray Wyatt to face The Usos.

A video plays of Daniel Bryan joining The Wyatt Family on Monday.

—–

We cut to “live” to the Verizon Center as the cameras pan the crowd. Michael Cole welcomes the home audience and hypes the Rhodes Bros./Wyatt Family title match still to come. We join The Shield as they hop the barricade, “Special Op” playing in the background. Dean Ambrose is on the mic first. He says he has heard the rumors about The Shield crumbling from the inside and about egos being out of control (Ambrose puts his arm around Roman Reigns when he makes that particular statement). Ambrose says everyone is dead wrong and CM Punk especially is dead wrong because The Shield cannot be divided. Reigns is next on the mic and says to divide a great team you have to attack its weakest link but there is none. Seth Rollins is third up and says any setbacks The Shield has had recently are anomalies because they will regroup and dominate like they always do. They conclude with “BELIEVE…IN THE SHIELD!”.

The Usos do their Siva Tau opening ritual then make their way to the ring to the tune of “So Close Now“. I guess a match is happening. Rollins and Reigns are the ones in action for The Shield as Ambrose joins Cole and JBL on commentary.

—–

Match #1: The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) Vs. The Shield (Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns)

Jimmy Uso starts off with Roman Reigns. Reigns backs Jimmy into the corner and connects with a right followed by a headbutt. Reigns throws Jimmy hard into the opposite corner, then repeatedly stomps him on the mat. Rollins tags in but gets floored with back to back clotheslines. Jey tags in and hits Rollins with a corner forearm while Jimmy holds him in place. Jey whips Rollins into the ropes and connects with a back elbow for a 2-count. Jimmy tags in and The Usos hit Rollins with a double back elbow followed by a double elbowdrop and Jimmy covers for 2. Rollins fights out of the corner with a chop but Jimmy fights back with rights of his own. Jimmy reverses an Irish whip and connects with a backdrop for 2.

Jey tags in and takes Rollins to the mat with an armdrag. Rollins escapes an armbar with a jawbreaker. Rollins connects with a right but Jey ducks a clothesline. Jimmy blind tags in and clotheslines Rollins outside of the ring. Reigns then comes in and they clothesline him out to the floor. Rollins runs in and they send him right back out onto Reigns. The Usos celebrate as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Jey has Rollins in an armbar as we return from commercial. Jey transitions into a headlock but Rollins tags Reigns in. Reigns catches Jey with a back elbow. Reigns connects with a suplex and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Rollins tags back in and connects with a top rope right to the ribs while Reigns holds him. Rollins applies a cobra clutch to wear Jey down as Ambrose sing-songs at Cole for “bullying” him. This commentary rules. Jey escapes the hold but Rollins prevents a tag and hot shots him on the top rope. Reigns tags in and connects with a forearm for 2. Reigns works Jey’s arm over, wrenching it around the bottom rope. Reigns traps Jey in a cobra clutch, but Jey escapes with back elbows. Reigns charges at Jey, but Jey ducks and he sends himself out to the floor. Reigns climbs to the apron but Jey catches him with a right slap.

Jey struggles for the tag but Reigns grabs the legs. Jey kicks him off and Rollins tags in but so does Jimmy. Jimmy takes it to both Shield members, concluding with a Samoan drop on Rollins. Jimmy goes for the butt splash in the corner but Rollins rolls out to avoid it. Reigns runs in and gets an enziguri to the head for his troubles. The Usos toss him out to the floor then go to take flight but Ambrose trips them up and the ref calls for the bell.

Winners [via DQ]: The Usos (8:58 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: The match itself was pretty by the numbers but Ambrose’s commentary was excellent and I ended up paying more attention to that. He did a great job dodging questions about Shield issues while also throwing in subtle jabs at his partners. Beautiful stuff. I could listen to Ambrose talk all day.

Post-Match: The Shield triple team The Usos until “Cult of Personality” brings CM Punk out to the ring. Punk and The Usos clear the ring of the heels. “So Close Now” plays as Punk and The Usos jaw with The Shield.

—–

We hear New Year’s Resolutions from The Prime Time Players. It ends with a “Millions of Dollars” dance. We go back to the arena where Vickie Guerrero stumbles out. She has something to say…after the commercial.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

We cut to footage from the WWE App where Vickie Guerrero books a six-man tag team main event between Punk & The Usos and The Shield.

Cha Cha La La” plays as Fandango and Summer Rae conclude their entrance. His opponent, R-Truth, raps his way out second to “What’s Up?“,  Xavier Woods by his side. Woods joins Cole and JBL on commentary and takes a selfie with them.

—–

Match #2: R-Truth [w/ Xavier Woods] Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]

Fandango stomps Truth down in the corner. Fandango whips Truth into the corner, but Truth floats over and connects with a hip toss. Fandango reverses an Irish whip but Truth stops, gyrates, then tosses him to the apron. Fandango drops Truth throat-first on the top rope then rolls in and hits a spinkick for 2. Fandango follows up with a snap suplex and covers for another 2-count. Fandango applies a chinlock, digging his knee into Truth’s back to increase pressure. Truth gets to his feet and tries to fight out but Fandango clubs him down. Truth catches Fandango with a kick, then follows up with a running clothesline. Truth whips Fandango into the corner but eats a boot during a splash attempt. Woods calls for The Funkadactyls and stands on top of the announce table. Out The Funkadactyls come as Woods dances with JBL’s hat. Meanwhile in the match Truth catches a distracted Fandango with THE LIE DETECTOR and covers for the 1…2…3. What the hell?

Winner [via Pinfall]: R-Truth (2:54)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: …The hell was that ending? The match was secondary to Woods getting to showcase himself on commentary and his rapport with JBL was fun enough but his decision to all of a sudden start dancing or whatever was…yeah. I have no words. Also poor Fandango; he had a damn good competitive match with the IC Champ on Monday and now he’s jobbing in less than 3 minutes to one of the more irrelevant acts on the WWE roster. Oof.

Post-Match: Truth, Woods, and The Funkadactyls dance to “Somebody Call My Momma“.

—–

A video plays highlighting WWE’s Tribute to the Troops.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Anyone else find it funny that WWE uses a song called “Here’s to Us” whenever they show Tribute to the Troops footage? I mean we already know it’s a publicity stunt thing but I figured WWE would be more subtle about congratulating themselves.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

We go backstage where Renee Young is standing by with WWE Intercontinental Champion Big E Langston. Young asks about his thoughts on Brock Lesnar’s destruction of his friend Mark Henry on Monday. Langston says Henry was looking for a wrestling match not a brawl, then says he’ll be okay. Langston says right now he wouldn’t want to be Brock Lesnar. Laughter brings in Curtis Axel. Axel sarcastically says he’s sorry about what happened to Henry and says he’s going to be laughing all the way to the bank when he wins tonight. Langston promises Axel he won’t be laughing at all after their match. Okay.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: That was pretty bad.

—–

We go to the announce table where Cole and JBL segue into a clip from RAW where Daniel Bryan joins The Wyatt Family.

—–

Gold and Smoke” brings out WWE Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes & Goldust to the ring. Cole questions if Daniel Bryan will interfere in this title match due to his new allegiance. Rhodes and Goldust pose in the ring as we go to commercial.

—–

-Commercial Break-

—–

Damien Sandow mocks people for having New Year’s Resolutions and says he just simply says what he’s going to do and does it.

—–

We cut back to the arena where the Wyatt Family jump cut plays. When we go back live Luke Harper & Erick Rowan are already in the ring. We cut to the rocking chair at ringside where no one is sitting.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: So I guess Cole essentially hinting at Daniel Bryan interference earlier in the show was just a red herring. Fair enough. This show was taped before that RAW even happened, anyway.

—–

Match #3: Cody Rhodes & Goldust (c) Vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan) for the WWE Tag Team Championship

Goldust and Harper start. Goldust ducks a clothesline attempt and hits a couple of rights until Harper backs him into the corner. Harper whips Goldust into the ropes and connects with a shoulderblock. Goldust connects with a right hand and Rhodes tags in. The Rhodes Bros. connect with a double suplex and Rhodes covers but they don’t even get one. Rhodes slides under Harper’s legs and dropkicks him in the knee before tagging back out to Goldust. Harper hits Goldust with a European uppercut and tags Rowan in. Rowan clubs Goldust in the corner but Goldust fights back with rights of his own until Rowan backs him into the corner. Harper tags back in but Goldust ducks a clothesline and hits one of his own. Goldust follows up with the drop-down right then goes into the corner mount for 3 right hands before hitting Rowan who runs over on the apron. Harper drops a distracted Goldust then tags Rowan in proper. Rowan clubs Goldust across the sternum then whips him hard into the opposite corner, the force sending him crashing to the mat. Rowan chokes Goldust on the bottom rope until the ref forces him off. Rowan connects with a hard forearm to the back followed by a headbutt, then Harper tags back in. Harper connects with a massive uppercut right hand then applies a chinlock.

Goldust gets to his feet and tries to break out but Harper hits him with a headbutt. Goldust fights out of the corner and hits Harper with a sunset bomb. Rhodes gets the hot tag and hits Harper with a springboard missile dropkick. Rhodes catches Harper with a running knee followed by the drop down right hand. Rhodes sends Harper out to the floor then knocks Rowan off the apron with a Disaster Kick. Rhodes then springboards off the top rope and hits Harper on the outside with a splash. Harper powers up out of nowhere and throws Rhodes into the barricade and the ring steps. The Wyatt Family stare Goldust down on the outside as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Rhodes catches Rowan with a kick but Rowan prevents the tag and backs him into the corner, peppering him with right hands. Rowan applies an Iron Claw in the corner then tosses him to the mat. Harper tags in, stares down Goldust, then hits a running elbow on Rhodes. Harper drops down and commences with the Gator Roll before applying a side headlock. Rhodes gets to his feet but eats a European uppercut and Harper knocks Goldust off the apron for good measure. Harper gets a running head start but Rhodes hits the disorientation clothesline out of nowhere. Rowan tags in and prevents the tag once more by throwing him to the mat. Rowan stares Goldust down then goes back to work. Rowan headbutts the back of Rhodes’ head then clubs him back down to the mat.

Rhodes fights back with a series of rights and sends Rowan out to the floor. Harper rolls his partner back in to make the tag. Harper sends Goldust off the apron then hits Rhodes with a sitout powerbomb for the 1…2…Goldust breaks the count. Goldust sends Rowan out to the floor then Harper sends Goldust out. Rhodes hits a sunset flip out of the corner for the 1…2…kickout. Harper responds with a big boot and down crumples Cody Rhodes. Harper places Rhodes on the top turnbuckle. Harper goes for a super back suplex but Rhodes elbows him down to the mat then takes Harper out with a moonsault. Rowan tags in and sends Rhodes into the ropes. Goldust gets the blind tag. Rowan backdrops Rhodes, but Goldust then rolls him up for the 1…2…3!

Winners and STILL Tag Team Champions [via Pinfall]: Cody Rhodes & Goldust (10:29 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A very good tag team match. The Wyatt Family are killers and they were great here, and the tag team champs sneaking out the victory protected them while also showcasing how smart The Brotherhood are as a team. Also major props to Cody Rhodes and his new love of aerial maneuvers; it has easily made him one of the most exciting wrestlers to watch in the WWE.

The Miz‘s New Year Resolution: to be a better person than he was the year before.

—–

Aksana concludes her entrance as we return to the ring. We see clips from the 10-Divas tag team match on Monday, where she pinned her opponent for tonight Nikki Bella. “You Can Look (But You Can’t Touch)” brings Bella out second. Her sister is not with her.

—–

Match #4: Nikki Bella Vs. Aksana

Bella backs Aksana against the ropes and breaks clean but Aksana shoves her a bunch and poses. Bella shoves back and hits Aksana with a hip toss followed by a scoop slam. Bella picks Aksana up and rams her into the corner, following up with a snap suplex for a 2-count. Aksana bails to the floor and Bella grabs her by the hair. Aksana grabs her hand and smashes the wrist against the ring post, then does it once again. Aksana rolls in and kicks Bella in the ribs before wrenches the left arm back while it’s wrapped in the middle rope. Aksana picks Bella up and walks around the ring before connecting with a side slam. Aksana suggestively crawls around Bella then kicks her in the chest and covers for 1. Aksana applies an overhead wristlock then sends her to the mat when she tries to break out before reapplying the hold.

Bella gets back to her feet and breaks out with right hands and knees. Bella follows up with a standing monkey flip then sends her face-first into the middle rope. Bella hits a running shoulderblock followed by a dropkick and a one-handed bulldog for the 1…2…kickout. Aksana reverses a corner Irish whip, catches a kick attempt, then clubs her down. Aksana charges again but Bella dodges the splash then finishes her off with a Torture Rack Backbreaker for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Nikki Bella (3:45)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Not as bad as you’d think. Actually it was more than decent. Guys I liked this match, okay?

—–

Cole and JBL hype the Orton/Cena match at Royal Rumble 2014. We then see the “Randy Orton Career Retrospective” video that Stephanie McMahon showed off on Monday.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Clever editing on WWE’s part to hide just who Orton beat for his first World Championship.

I Need Five” concludes as Big E Langston finishes his entrance. “Reborn” kicks up, bringing out his opponent Curtis Axel.

Match #5: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Vs. Curtis Axel in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Langston catches Axel with some hard rights to the midsection to start. Axel fights back with a knee and a series of rights. Axel chops Langston, who brushes it off and sends him to the mat with a shoulderblock. Langston hits a series of shoulders to the midsection followed by the running shoulder. Langston works the midsection over some more then sends Axel to the opposite corner. Axel gets the boots up during a splash attempt and heads to the second turnbuckle. Axel flies right into a shoulderblock from Langston, who covers for 2. Langston tries to pull Axel into the ring but Axel hangs onto the ring skirt. Axel kicks Langston in the knee cap then repeatedly clubs and stomps him before choking him with his boot.

Axel connects with a springboard elbowdrop on Langston, then rolls back in and covers for 1. Axel applies an armbar to wear Langston down, digging his forearm into the side of his head. Langston gets to his feet and escapes the now-front facelock with a back bodydrop. Langston follows up with back to back running clotheslines and a release belly-to-belly suplex. Langston connects with the running Ultimate Warrior splash then goes for the Big Ending but Axel grabs the top rope and bails to the apron. Axel drops Langston on the top rope, then rolls in…running right into the bodyblock. Langston pulls the straps down and this time hits the BIG ENDING for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Big E Langston (3:55)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A quick match but an entertaining one. Langston is fun to watch and Axel had some good moments here too including escaping the first Big Ending…before eating it the second time around. WWE keeps hinting at an IC/US Title unification and while I’m not on board with that idea completely I’d love to see Langston lord over the secondary title division if it does happen.

WWE.com “Exclusive”: Michael Cole sits down with Paul Heyman. Heyman tells him Lesnar is here to be World Champion now that there can be only one. He’s a Highlander. Lesnar will also be at Old School RAW to do something “Old School”.

Lilian Garcia introduces “Bad News” Barrett, who shows up by the entrance stage in an elevated podium, gavel and everything. He repeatedly hammers the gavel then asks for some “decorum”. Barrett says he knows people have been busy making New Year Resolutions but he’s got some BAD NEWS: there’s no way the WWE Universe will be capable of sticking to their resolutions. Barrett then guarantees the people will be just as fat, unhealthy, and unproductive as they are now. Barrett wishes everyone a Happy New Year sarcastically as the hash tag graphic displays on the screen.

Main Event: CM Punk & The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) Vs. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns)

Punk and Ambrose start. They jockey for position in the corner, with Ambrose winning and clubbing him down to the mat. Punk then tosses Ambrose into the corner and repeatedly kicks at the hamstrings before sending him into the opposite corner and connecting with a chop. Punk whips Ambrose into the ropes and connects with a back elbow. Punk sends Ambrose into his own corner and yells at him about being a weak link. Rollins tags himself in and keeps the angry Ambrose at bay. Rollins applies a hammerlock on Punk. Punk escapes and applies a side headlock. Jey tags back in and hits Rollins with a superkick to the chest as Jimmy holds him up. Rollins backs Jey into the corner and hits a series of shoulderblocks to the midsection. Rollins reverses an Irish whip but gets floored with a shoulder tackle for 2. Jey clotheslines Rollins out to the floor then goes to take flight, but Reigns stands in his way to prevent it. This match continues after the break.

Rollins tags in and chokes Jimmy with his boot. Rollins allows Jimmy to crawl close to his partners then flattens him with a standing back splash for 2. Rollins applies a chinlock. Reigns comes in and knocks Jey out with the Superman Punch. Ambrose steals the tag from Reigns and goes right at Punk with a series of angry rights and lefts. Ambrose seats Punk on the top turnbuckle and connects with a second-rope butterfly suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Ambrose freaks out, then sits and stares at Punk instead of tagging out. Reigns yells for the tag but nothing. Punk catches Ambrose with a kick to the head and goes for the GTS but Reigns interferes. Punk hits a kick then The Usos hit him with a superkick to send him out to the floor. Rollins runs in and he gets sent out as well. The Usos hit stereo splashes while Punk finishes Ambrose off with the GTS for the 1…2…3.

Winners [via Pinfall]: CM Punk & The Usos (10:15 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A good main event with a really fun ending sequence (Punk holding down the top rope so The Usos could connect with the stereo splashes was an awesome touch). Ambrose losing his cool and costing his team the match feeds into the “weak link” theory but also plays up the story that Ambrose is turning himself into the weak part of The Shield. Good storytelling, good main event.

Post-Match: Punk & The Usos celebrate as Rollins and Reigns discuss what just happened. They leave without Dean Ambrose.

We cut to a video of Bray Wyatt at his compound. Wyatt says the human race is a bacteria that infects and destroys. He says that “he” (Daniel Bryan) needed him. Wyatt says she dances and sings in the light, and always gets her way. Wyatt says “he” has a home to conclude the show.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Creepy as hell way to end the episode. I can dig it.

*****

Overall Show Thoughts

The first Smackdown of 2014 wasn’t great or terrible; it was simply good. Now while “good” is nothing to scoff at, it was the kind of good that doesn’t inspire so much as just maintain the status quo. In short this week’s show is competent but it’s also not required viewing.

‘WWE RAW’ 12/30/13 Results + Notes – Brock Lesnar Returns, Daniel Bryan Gives in to the Dark Side, Punk Vs. Rollins

WWE RAW logo

Venue: The Richmond Coliseum (Richland, VA)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

The final RAW of 2013 proved to be an eventful one as Brock Lesnar made his return and Daniel Bryan did the unthinkable and joined the men who have tormented him over the past month. Also on the show CM Punk faced Seth Rollins of The Shield, the non-Rumble main event to Royal Rumble was announced, and Big E Langston defended the IC Championship against Fandango.

Read on for results and notes from the show, courtesy of James Caldwell‘s much more detailed and interesting coverage/analysis over at PWTorch.

Match Results/Notes

1. CM Punk defeated Seth Rollins [w/ Roman Reigns & *WWE United States Champion* Dean Ambrose] via pinfall with the GTS (17:42).

  • Before the Match: CM Punk opened the show by recapping his 2013 and was interrupted by The Shield. Punk challenged whomever thought was best in the trio, then got under Ambrose’s skin by calling him the weak link of the group.
  • Match Notes: Ambrose was ballistic for most of the match, teasing his involvement at one point and preventing the ref from seeing Rollins pin his foe. Reigns’ attempt to calm Ambrose down was met with some anger himself.
  • Post-Match: Reigns checked on the fallen Rollins while Ambrose remained outside.

2. Dolph Ziggler defeated Curtis Axel via pinfall with the ZIG ZAG (4:15).

3. Big E Langston (c) defeated Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] via pinfall with the BIG ENDING to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship (13:05).

4. Damien Sandow defeated The Great Khali via pinfall (4:56).

  • Before the Match: Sandow was interviewed by Renee Young and vowed to quit if he couldn’t beat his opponent tonight.
  • Match Notes: Sandow’s opponent was chosen via the WWE Universe. Sandow got the victory but Khali’s shoulder was up and the ref didn’t see it so while he saved his job he might not have really saved it.

5. R-Truth defeated Brodus Clay via pinfall with the LIE DETECTOR (4:05).

  • Match Notes: Xavier Woods was on commentary during the match. Clay was distracted by his old theme music as well as Woods, who stood on the announce table, allowing Truth to take advantage for the victory.

6. Kaitlyn, Summer Rae, Aksana, Alicia Fox, Rosa Mendes defeated Naomi, Cameron, Eva Marie, Brie Bella, Nikki Bella when Aksana pinned Nikki (5:11).

7a. Gauntlet: Daniel Bryan defeated Luke Harper via pinfall with the BUSAIKU KNEE (15:01).

7b. Gauntlet: Daniel Bryan defeated Erick Rowan via pinfall with a rollup (6:26).

7c. Gauntlet: Daniel Bryan defeated Bray Wyatt via DQ when Harper and Rowan interfered (0:11).

News + Notes

Daniel Bryan Joins the Wyatt Family

  • At the conclusion of the third gauntlet match Daniel Bryan got on the mic and said that Bray Wyatt was right and he asked to join the Family. Wyatt hit Bryan with SISTER ABIGAIL then Harper and Rowan carried him halfway up the ramp until releasing him and letting him stagger. As Bryan slowly made his way towards Bray the crowd desperately chanted his name. Bryan teased turning back face but then hung his head in shame and followed Wyatt to the back to conclude the episode.

The Best Returns

  •  Triple H announced the return of Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman, saying that bringing back the man who broke his arm twice was best for business. Heyman didn’t mince words and announced that Lesnar was looking to challenge the winner of the Royal Rumble 2014 main event for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Lesnar then talked for himself, saying he didn’t care who it was as he was the first in line and no one could stop him. He invited anyone to come out and try and out came Mark Henry. Lesnar then laid waste to Henry, concluding with an F-5 on the floor.

Royal Rumble 2014 Main Event

  • Stephanie McMahon announced that Randy Orton will defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against John Cena at next month’s Royal Rumble. There will be no interference or shenanigans; the victor will win either via pinfall or submission.
