Commentators: Tom Phillips & Byron Saxton

It’s a 10-match clustercuss this week on WWE Main Event as Cody Rhodes, Goldust, Los Matadores, El Torito take on 3MB, Curtis Axel, and Ryback. The Darren Young/Titus O’Neil beef also continues as they face off in a rematch from Elimination Chamber and Damien Sandow looks to get back on track (but probably won’t) against Sin Cara.

Match Results

  1. Cody Rhodes, Goldust, El Torito, & Los Matadores defeated Ryback, Curtis Axel, & 3MB when Torito pinned Heath Slater (7:20 shown) [**].
  2. Alicia Fox & Aksana defeated Natalya & Eva Marie when Aksana pinned Natalya (3:56) [N/A].

Tom Phillips welcomes the home audience as Cody Rhodes & Goldust make their way out for the opening match. Their partners, Los Matadores & El Torito, make their way out second. Torito is in white so Phillips calls him “El Torito Blanco”, which made me smile for some reason. Their opponents, 3MB and RybAXEL, make their way out next to their own respective themes. Phillips and Byron Saxton hype the happenings on RAW from Monday.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Seriously where the hell does Heath Slater keep disappearing off to? Every time I think he’s going to get replaced in the “band” he shows up again like nothing happened.

Match #1: Cody Rhodes, Goldust, El Torito, & Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) Vs. Ryback, Curtis Axel, & 3MB (Heath Slater, Drew McIntyre, & Jinder Mahal)

Goldust and Axel start. Goldust with a running shoulderblock followed by an inverted atomic drop off an attempted leap frog. Goldust connects with an armdrag takedown then tags Rhodes in. Rhodes gets the crowd clapping then gets caught in a waistlock. Rhodes grabs the leg and takes Axel to the mat. Rhodes blocks a hip toss and hits an armdrag. Axel fights back and chops Rhodes in the corner, then tags out to Ryback. Ryback sends Rhodes into the corner and connects with a chop, followed by two more. Rhodes fights back and sends Ryback head-first into the turnbuckles. Rhodes follows up with a springboard missile dropkick and the crowd goes…louder than they were a second ago. Ryback reverses an Irish whip but Rhodes slides under his legs and connects with some strikes. Rhodes attempts a Disaster Kick but Ryback counters with a powerbomb, giving the heels the advantage as we go to “break” (I’m watching on WWE Network so there isn’t an actual commercial).

-“Commercial Break”-

McIntyre takes Rhodes down with a flying axhandle and covers for 2. Slater tags in and hits Rhodes with a kneedrop for 2, then peppers him with elbows to the chest. Slater with a right hook. Axel tags in and clubs Rhodes in the back of the neck, followed by an elbow to the top of the skull and a rear-chinlock. Rhodes breaks out of the hold and catches Axel with a right, but eats a kneelift when he attempts a backdrop. Ryback tags back in and connects with a standing legdrop for the 1…2…kickout. Ryback applies a seated cobra clutch to wear Rhodes down. Rhodes gets to his feet and breaks out but Ryback connects with a gorilla press into a powerslam for the 1…2…Goldust breaks the count. Ryback clears off Los Matadores and Goldust from the apron, then turns into a DISASTER KICK from Rhodes. Torito is the only man Rhodes can tag.

AND TAG HE DOES as Torito takes Slater down with a springboard hurricanrana. Torito “gores” Mahal off the apron, then hits a springboard headbutt to Slater. Los Matadores toss out the rest of 3MB to the floor then hit stereo slingshot splashes. Torito reverses a powerbomb attempt into a faceplant and scales to the top. Axel tries to sweep the legs but Rhodes knocks him off then Goldust hits him with a cannonball from the apron. Rhodes then takes Ryback out with a springboard splash. Slater gets back to his feet and trash talks Torito. They trade hip-based taunts, then Torito charges. Slater grabs him by the horns but Torito kicks him off, then hits a hurricanrana while Slater is kneeling and covers for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Cody Rhodes, Goldust, El Torito, & Los Matadores (7:20 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Well that was…a lot of people in one match. Torito getting some offense was fun, and I enjoyed his taunt-off with Slater so there was that. Los Matadores never even tagged in.

Post-Match: Byron Saxton gets on a live mic and asks Heath Slater how he feels losing to El Torito. Slater says he’s better than this and won’t answer any more of his questions. He concludes with “SLATER HAS SPOKEN!”.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Well maybe there is a reason Slater has been randomly no-showing 3MB matches after all.

RAW CLIP: John Cena calls out The Wyatt Family, gets beaten up, and gets taken away on an ambulance due to a knee injury.

—–

Natalya & Eva Marie make their way out for the next match. Uhhhhh. They’re in action next.

—–

-Commercial Break (WWE Network Ad)-

—–

Alicia Fox & Aksana make their way out as we return from the WWE Network ad.

—–

Match #2: Natalya & Eva Marie Vs. Alicia Fox & Aksana

Natalya and Fox start. Fox backs Natalya into the ropes and cheap shots her with a kick to the midsection. Fox applies a wristlock, twisting the arm to add some pain. Natalya rolls through and takes Fox to the mat with a suplex for 1. Fox reverses an Irish whip and leapfrogs Natalya, then catches her with a handspring hurricanrana. Natalya responds with a bridging O’Connor Roll for 2. Natalya spanks Fox (WHY?) then tags in Marie. Marie takes Fox to the mat with a wristlock then does so again. She does it a third time but gets a knee to the gut on her fourth attempt. Fox whips Marie into the ropes and connects with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for 2. Fox throws Marie into the corner then connects with a Northern Lights suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Fox slaps on a rear-chinlock as Marie struggles to get to her partner.

Aksana tags in but Marie manages to make it to Natalya and it’s the latter with all the offense, including the back to back snap suplex. Natalya takes Aksana to the mat with a snapmare then dropkicks the back of her head. Natalya takes Aksana down with a rolling clothesline and goes for the Sharpshooter. Fox goes for a clothesline but Natalya ducks and Marie pulls her out of the ring. Aksana kicks Natalya off into Marie on the apron, and follows up with a standing spinebuster for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Alicia Fox & Aksana (3:56)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Well shit, I did not see Fox & Aksana coming up with the win in this one. A pleasant surprise. Also to Marie’s credit she stuck to taking punishment as opposed to dishing it out so she didn’t stink up the joint like I assume people always expect her to.

RAW REBOUND: The Undertaker signs Brock Lesnar’s “Open Contract” for Wrestlemania XXX then chokeslams Lesnar through a table for added emphasis.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: WWE used the awesome song that assassin sings to Frank Castle in The Punisher. HELL YEAH. Now I care about this match. Okay not really but still.

—–

The podium rises by the entrance stage and it’s time for some bad news from Wade Barrett. Barrett trashes Spring Break, saying these “future leaders” will lead to the decline of America eventually resulting in The United States of China after we get sold off to the highest bidder. Wakka wakka.

Darren Young makes his way out for the next match. His opponent, Titus O’Neil, makes his way out second before Young even finishes his entrance.

—–

Match #3: Darren Young Vs. Titus O’Neil

O’Neil backs Young into the corner and goes for a cheap shot but Young ducks and hits a series of chops. O’Neil responds with a scoop slam out of nowhere but misses the follow-up elbow and Young connects with a running clothesline for 1. O’Neil reverses an Irish whip and goozles Young up when he attempts a sunset flip. O’Neil eats a pair of boots mid-corner splash attempt, but ends up knocking Young off the middle turnbuckle with a big boot. O’Neil throws Young into the corner, then follows up with a running legdrop, covering for the 1…2…kickout. O’Neil applies an armbar/chinlock combo. Young tries to break out so O’Neil throws him into the corner, then throws him to the mat. O’Neil follows up with a shoulderblock and covers for 1, then tries again for another 1, and goes back to the chinlock/armbar.

O’Neil sends Young to the corner and connects with an open-hand slap to the chest followed by a running splash. O’Neil chokes Young with his boot and kills more time by jawing with the crowd. O’Neil picks Young up on his shoulders but Young reverses into a sunset flip for the 1…2…3! HEH?

Winner [via Pinfall]: Darren Young (4:07)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Lots of dead air in this match. Worse than their Elimination Chamber contest without question. Young getting the win evens up the “series” so I’m guessing we’ll be getting a few more matches between these two…probably until WWE figures out what to do with them next.

—–

Sin Cara makes his way out for the next match. His opponent, Damien Sandow, makes his way out second. He looks as shaken as a man on a big losing streak would.

—–

Match #4: Sin Cara Vs. Damien Sandow

The mood lighting sets in as Sandow backs Cara into the corner. Sandow peppers Cara with a series of jabs, then repeatedly stomps his fallen foe as the ref yells at him. Sandow with some forearms then yells “YOU’RE WELCOME!” at the crowd. Sandow connects with a snap suplex for a 2-count, then applies a rear-chinlock. Cara breaks out but misses the springboard crossbody, and Sandow immediately pounces. Sandow pulls Cara halfway out of the ring and drives an elbow to the skull. Sandow rolls back in and covers for 1. Sandow connects with a series of knees followed by the side Russian legsweep. He teases the Elbow of Disdain but peppers him with more forearms before finally hitting the elbow for the 1…2…kickout.

Sandow slaps the chinlock back on and sends Cara to the mat when he almost escapes. Sandow follows up with a kneedrop for 1, then tries again for another 1-count. Sandow seats Cara on the top turnbuckle, but Cara hits some rights and connects with a tornado DDT for the 1…2…kickout. Cara hits a tilt-a-whirl headscissors followed by a moonsault that doesn’t really connect for the 1…2…kickout. Sandow reverses an Irish whip but eats a back handspring elbow for the 1…2…kickout. Cara calls for the crowd to rev up, but gets sent to the mat and Sandow covers for the 1…2…kickout. Sandow lets out a scream of frustration then whips Cara into the corner. Cara rolls Sandow up for the 1…2…Cara lifts Sandow up then slams him to the mat for the 1…2…kickout. Cara heads to the top but gets sent to the mat when Sandow shakes the top rope. Sandow covers for the 1…2…kickout. Sandow traps Cara in a leglock submission but Cara kicks Sandow off. Sandow immediately hits a series of forearms and kicks that send Cara to the apron. Cara catches him with a kick to the head, then climbs to the top and hits the FLYING SENTON for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Sin Cara (5:40)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Saxton discussed Sandow’s new “Sudden Death Mode” view on every match he has, explaining why he’s so aggressive nowadays and giving him the most minor of depth, but I still can’t help but get depressed every time Sandow shows up just to lose another match. This one was at least competitive and fun enough to watch, with Cara lifting Sandow up from the mat after a roll-up sticking out as the most memorable moment. New Sin Cara rules, Losing Streak Sandow drools. BRING THE ROBE AND ARROGANCE BACK, PLEASE.

*****

Overall Thoughts: Move along now, nothing to see here.

We cut to the arena where the fans are still filing in. Josh Matthews welcomes the Kickoff Show audience. Shots of fans lining the Target Center halls. Matthews hypes the EC main event and we cut to the EC kickoff panel, which includes Mark Henry, The Miz, and Rey Mysterio. Miz references his wedding and Mysterio congratulates him. Henry says he’s looking forward to the Chamber match the most, Miz says he’s also looking forward to the other championship matches. Mysterio is hyped to Shield Vs. Wyatts. Matthews then hypes the Kickoff match between Cody Rhodes/Goldust and RybAxel. Miz and Mysterio both hype the Rhodes Brothers. Henry complements the Tag Team division, saying there hasn’t been this much excitement surrounding it since the Attitude Era. Henry stumbles over his words a bit, but it’s all good because he’s scary.

—–

We cut to the “Social Media Lounge” where Renee Young reads some tweets and hypes the WWE Network launch tomorrow (YAAAAYYYY!!!!!!).

—–

We see a shot of the massive Elimination Chamber structure hanging above the ring, then hypes the main event for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Matthews goes through the rules of the match.

—–

LAST MONDAY ON RAW: Cena, Orton, Bryan, Christian, Cesaro, Sheamus, The Shield, and The Wyatts brawl to end the show.

—–

The panel talk about the Elimination Chamber match some more. Henry says there will be a victor but there will be no winner when it comes to the pain of this match. They stumble through some comments. This is not a good Kickoff panel. Oof.

—–

We cut backstage where Zeb Colter gives The Real Americans a pep talk. He says both of them winning their titles tonight would represent a new America. Colter says tonight they are going to be the ones doing the taking and they lead a “WE! THE PEOPLE!” chant.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I want this America.

—–

JBL makes his way out to the announce table, doing his goofy dance. We then cut to a graphic hyping Batista/Alberto Del Rio. Ew.

—–

VIDEO: Alberto Del Rio beats up Dolph Ziggler on RAW two weeks ago until Batista interrupts and attacks, throwing him into the ring steps and powerbombing him through the announce table.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Nothing says “awesome build” like having one guy totally dominate the other.

—–

Jerry “The King” Lawler makes his way to the announce table and the crowd predictably loves him.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: THAT SHIRT, HOLY SHIT.

—–

VIDEO: The Bella Twins teach us how the WWE Network works. It’s that “airplane” schtick you’ve already seen before.

—–

We cut to ringside where Lawler and JBL are joined by Michael Cole. Cole and company go full boner for the WWE Network. Lawler uses his iPad to watch Summerslam 2013.

—–

“Gold and Smoke” brings out Cody Rhodes & Goldust for the Kickoff match. Justin Roberts milks the “Goldust” announcement like he’s a Spanish announcer yelling “GOOOOOAL” during a football match. Their opponents, Ryback & Curtis Axel, make their way out second to the former’s entrance music. They are joined by Axel’s grandfather Larry “The Axe” Hennig! AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: WWE is in AWA territory so I should have expected The Ax to show up. Cool moment.

—–

Kickoff Match: Cody Rhodes & Goldust Vs. Ryback & Curtis Axel [w/ Larry “The Ax” Hennig]

Goldust and Axel start. Goldust grabs a side headlock and floors Axel with a shoulderblock. Goldust connects with back to back armdrag takedowns, then tags Rhodes in. Rhodes goes for a top rope move but Axel moves and prevents it. Ryback tags in and gets a 1-count off a roll-up. Rhodes catches Ryback with a drop down right hand. Rhodes escapes a powerslam but runs right into a back elbow. Ryback drives the shoulder into the midsection then tags Axel back in. Axel chops Rhodes in the corner but Rhodes gets one of his own, then kicks out his legs and clotheslines him out to the floor. Ryback charges and gets sent out as well. Rhodes scales to the top, hitting Ryback with a splash while Goldust hits Axel with a senton from the apron…and commercial?

-Commercial Break-

Ryback repeatedly stomps a fallen Goldust when we return from the break (?!?). Ryback keeps the stomps going then tags into Axel. Axel connects with a slingshot elbow as Goldust hangs from the apron. Axel rolls back in and applies a front facelock to prevent a tag. Axel whips Goldust into the ropes and connects with a dropkick. Axel covers for 2 then sends him into the corner. Ryback splashes Goldust in the corner then kicks at him arrogantly. Ryback picks Goldust up and connects with a delayed vertical suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Ryback knees Goldust in the spine then tags Axel back in. Axel connects with a right to the ribs. Goldust fights back with rights of his own but eats a knee. Goldust dodges a move and rolls Axel up for 2, then both men get up and clothesline one another down.

Ryback tags in and prevents a tag, slamming the back of Goldust’s head repeatedly against the mat. Ryback throws him into the corner but eats a right, a kick, and eventually a second-rope hurricanrana. That was beautiful. Goldust goes for a tag but Ryback gets in the way. Goldust backdrops Ryback out to the floor. Axel gets the tag but so does Rhodes. Rhodes hits back to back clotheslines followed by a jumping knee. Rhodes follows up with the top rope standing moonsault for the 1…2…kickout. Rhodes catches Axel with a kick then connects with Alabama Slam. Ryback pulls Rhodes out of the ring but gets a Disaster Kick for his troubles. Rhodes goes for a slingshot dropkick but Axel counters with a powerbomb (NICE) for the 1…2…kickout!

Axel sets up for the Perfect Plex but Rhodes escapes. Ryback breaks up a Cross Rhodes attempt then fights with Goldust on the outside. Axel once again tries the Perfect Plex, but Rhodes counters again and this time successfully hits the CROSS RHODES for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Cody Rhodes & Goldust (8:54)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A solid, if unspectacular contest. I enjoyed it anyway though, and it was cool seeing Larry Hennig again. Hearing Lawler discuss his AWA history was nice too.

—–

Byron Saxton is joined in the locker room by The UsosJimmy Uso says they have been dreaming about winning the Tag Team Titles since day 1, referencing their family lineage holding these belts. Jey Uso says being the new champions sounds good, then says they respect The New Age Outlaws. Jey, however, says they have two words for them: It’s…OVER.

—–

Back to the Social Media lounge where Renee Young reads more tweets.

—–

HYPE GRAPHIC: The Shield Vs. The Wyatt Family.

—–

The Kickoff panel give their EC predictions: Mysterio picks Cesaro, Henry picks Sheamus, and Miz also picks Cesaro…but also hints that Daniel Bryan could do it. No one cares about Orton or Cena. This is now my favorite kickoff panel. Matthews signs off and we’re off to the races!

-WWE Signature/Elimination Chamber Intro Video-

We go back live to the Target Center, as pyro emanates from the entrance stage. The crowd roars as Michael Cole welcomes the home audience. Jack Swagger makes his way out alongside Zeb Colter for the opening match. Colter calls for the music to be cut and says the “E” in Big E’s name stands for “enough!”. Colter asks the crowd if they know what Big E has done for America since becoming IC Champion. He answers for them (NOTHING), then says the country has gotten worse in the last three months Big E has been champion. Colter then blames the Polar Vortex on illegals crossing the border, then leads the “WE! THE PEOPLE!” chant. His opponent, IC Champ Big E Langston, makes his way out next as we check in with the Spanish Announce Team that now includes Ricardo Rodriguez. THERE HE IS!

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A few nights ago I watched a ton of goofy conspiracy theory videos so Colter’s comments about the polar vortex made me laugh harder than usual.

Match #1: Big E Langston (c) Vs. Jack Swagger [w/ Zeb Colter] for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

Langston backs Swagger into the corner, then into another as they jockey for position. The ref separates the two. Langston ducks a clothesline and hits Swagger with a running shoulderblock of his own. Swagger rolls out of the ring for a breather/consultation with Colter. Swagger steps back in the ring and catches Langston with a series of rights. Langston reverses an Irish whip attempt in a release overhead belly to belly suplex. Langston follows up with another one, then hits a running midsection shoulderblock in the corner. Langston sends Swagger into the corner but before he can splash, Swagger rolls back out to the floor. This time Langston follows and sends him face-first into the ring steps. Langston turns to Colter and challenges him to fight. Langston rolls Swagger into the ring and covers for 2. Swagger rolls back to the floor. Langston grabs Swagger but Swagger grabs the arm and throws him to the floor. Swagger follows up with a running clothesline and JBL marks out about it because he loves clotheslines. Swagger rolls Langston into the ring and covers, but only gets a 1-count. Swagger goes for a superplex but Langston fights him off. Swagger comes running back up and hits a second-rope overhead throw for the 1…2…KICKOUT. Snap. They trade right hands until Swagger kicks the leg. He goes for a gutwrench suplex but Langston powers out and runs right into a boot to the midsection. Swagger goes for the follow-up but gets bowled over by a Langston bodyblock. He pulls the straps down but Swagger reapplies the PATRIOT LOCK! Langston gets to his foot and breaks it up with an enziguri! Langston follows up with the BIG ENDING for the 1…2…3!

Winner and STILL Intercontinental Champion [via Pinfall]: Big E Langston (11:49)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Excellent opener that made the IC Championship look more important than it has in forever. Both men beat the snot out of each other and Langston looked like a superstar. His suicide spear was the best.

Post-Match: Big E Langston’s celebration is broken up by Wade Barrett and his podium of doom. Barrett’s bad news mocks the USA for having less medals than Russia did at the Winter Olympics.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: That was unnecessary and killed the post-match buzz. Also I’ll take democracy over pointless medals any damn day of the week.

—–

Cole and company hype the impending return of Hulk Hogan.

—–

LAST MONDAY ON RAW: Daniel Bryan gets beaten up by Kane, putting his ability to be 100% at the Chamber in jeopardy.

LAST FRIDAY ON SMACKDOWN: Kane injures Daniel Bryan’s shoulder some more.

—–

Interview Area

Byron Saxton is standing by with Daniel Bryan, whose shoulder is still taped up. Bryan says his mindset is the same whether he’s 100% or 10%, he will go full throttle. Bryan says he can’t say whether he’ll win the Chamber, then asks a whole bunch of questions that result in “YES!” responses. He then leads a “YES!” chant.

—–

WWE Tag Team Champs The New Age Outlaws make their way out for the next match. Road Dogg and Billy Gunn do their usual pre-match schtick. So they aren’t heels? These guys confuse me. Their opponents, The Usos, are out second, and they do the whole Siva Tau entrance which is badly mic’ed.

—–

Match #2: The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) (c) Vs. The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) for the WWE Tag Team Championship

Jimmy and Gunn start. Gunn slaps on a wristlock and transitions into a side headlock. Jimmy whips Gunn into the ropes but eats a shoulderblock. Jimmy goes for a backdrop but Gunn sends him into the ropes and connects with a back elbow. Gunn raises his arms in celebration and hugs Road Dogg. Gunn slaps on another wristlock but Jimmy reverses into one of his own…then eats a right hand. Gunn clubs Jimmy down. Jimmy takes Gunn down with a drop toehold followed by back to back armdrag takedowns and a hip toss. Jimmy goes for a superkick but Gunn slides out of the ring. Dogg tries to attack but eats a hip toss and also bails out. The Usos go for a stereo splash but The New Age Outlaws move so The Usos bounce against the ropes instead.

Jey and Dogg both tag in. Dogg does some gyrating and dancing before catching Jey with a kick to the midsection. Dogg goes for a headbutt but Jey’s Samoan so he no-sells it and does some dancing of his own. Dogg reverses a corner Irish whip but runs into a big boot. Jey charges at Dogg, who sends him HARD into the corner with a hip toss. Jesus. Dogg with a leg lariat against in the middle rope followed by a Fargo Strut. Dogg tosses Jey to the outside and Gunn gets the tag. Gunn connects with a clothesline on the floor, turning Jey inside out. Gunn rolls Jey in but he kicks out at 1. Gunn drops Jey with a right hand. Jey tries to stand but he can’t due to hurting his leg during that corner hip toss.

A “CM PUNK!” chant breaks out and the IWC groans. Dogg tags in and kicks Jey in the gut. Jey catches Dogg with back to back rights but eats a knee to the gut. Dogg blocks a hip toss and kicks Jey down to the mat. Dogg kicks Jey hard in the spine and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Dogg slaps on a rear-chinlock as Lawler threatens to team with JBL and win the Tag Team Titles. Jey stomps on Dogg’s foot to break the hold then catches him “in the face” (lots of air) with an enziguri.

Jimmy and Gunn both tag in. Jimmy clears Dogg from the apron then catches Gunn with a back elbow. Jimmy hits a series of moves followed by a Bubba Bomb. Jimmy sends a charging Dogg out to the floor AND THERE GOES MY STREAM FUCK YOU SONY. After some messing with the system we’re back and Jimmy hits Dogg with a suicide dive. Gunn catches Jimmy with a clothesline. Gunn rolls Jimmy back in and goes for the Fameasser, but Jimmy escapes and catches Gunn with a superkick for the 1…2…kickout. Jimmy goes to the top but Dogg distracts him. Jimmy catches Dogg with a superkick but Gunn rolls him up out of nowhere for the 1…2…3!

Winners and STILL Tag Team Champions [via Pinfall]: The New Age Outlaws (9:25, give or take)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Sony Live Viewer is already having hiccups so bear with me as I do this recap. It may have a delay or some missing info on it. Besides that annoyance this was a pretty good tag team match, much better than I was expecting given it involved The New Age Outlaws. Hate the finish and the fact NAO are still champs though.

Post-Match: Wade Barrett is at a normal podium. His bad news this time: Daniel Bryan will not win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tonight, causing the fans to turn on him and the death of the Yes! Movement.

Cole and company do more WWE Network hype. I’M ALREADY PLENTY HYPED BUT I DON’T CARE GIMME GIMME GIMME.

—–

Darren Young makes his way out, wearing a No H8 hoodie and getting very little reaction from the crowd. We see clips of the PTP breakup from last month. Young’s opponent, Titus O’Neil, makes his way out second. His new theme is intense.

—–

Match #3: Darren Young Vs. Titus O’Neil

Young and O’Neil lock up and run all around the ring. O’Neil backs Young into the corner and hides in the ropes when Young goes for a right. O’Neil misses another splash attempt and eats a big boot when he charges again. Minneapolis is asleep, the dicks. Young mounts his comeback with rights and uppercuts, running clothesline, and back bodydrop.

Young takes O’Neil to the mat and peppers him with right hands. O’Neil bails to the apron and Young follows. Young hits him with an apron neckbreaker, then rolls him in and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Young picks O’Neil up but O’Neil escapes and connects with a kidney shot. O’Neil then whips Young into the ropes and hits CLASH OF THE TITUS for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Titus O’Neil (6:17)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: The crowd was dead for this match but it wasn’t that bad. O’Neil has improved considerably.

Post-Match: Wade Barrett is out AGAIN to kill momentum. Barrett’s podium is busted so he’s going to be at eye level for the rest of the night. Barrett’s bad news this time is that Hulk Hogan’s star is dimmed in comparison to his own abilities.

—–

We check in with the All-Star Panel. They recap the Kickoff match between Rhodes/Goldust and RybAxel. Mark Henry is proud of Titus O’Neil for getting a win tonight but he’s sad about the PTP breakup. The Miz has nice things to say about the IC Championship match. Rey Mysterio talks about the Tag Team Title match. Whoa three matches, three panelists. Who would’ve thought? They also announce the next match: THE SHIELD VS. THE WYATT FAMILY.

—–

STORYLINE RECAP: The Shield Vs. The Wyatt Family. The video makes sure to highlight the friction within The Shield.

—–

The Shield make their way out through the crowd for the next match. The Wyatt Family are out second, and they get a better response from the Minneapolis crowd. Bray Wyatt blows out the lantern and the trio get ready on the outside. A “THIS IS AWESOME!” chant is already happening. The Wyatt Family and Shield stare one another down in the center of the ring. Wyatt calls Dean Ambrose the weak one pissing him off. Dueling “Wyatt/Shield” chants. Ambrose attacks, and The Shield clear the ring of The Wyatt Family. The crowd goes half-wild/half-angry.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: This is the best, guys.

—–

Match #4: The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns) Vs. The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, & Erick Rowan)

Finally things settle down and Rowan enters the ring to start for his team. Rollins starts for The Shield. Rollins rolls under a clothesline attempt, then does it again. Ambrose paintbrushes Harper with his forearm. Ambrose catches Harper with a second-rope back elbow. Rowan distracts Ambrose, allowing Harper to catch him with a dropkick out of nowhere. Wyatt tags in and peppers Ambrose with rights in the full mount. Wyatt backs Ambrose into the corner, connecting with a headbutt followed by a freight train corner splash. Wyatt jaws at Reigns and Rollins, then tags Rowan in. Rowan slams Ambrose hard onto the mat then follows up with a kneedrop to the sternum. Rowan curls his fists and uses them to squash Ambrose’s head between. Ambrose bites Rowan’s hand to break it but runs into a sidewalk slam for the 1…2…kickout.

Harper tags in and stands on Ambrose’s head. Harper chops Ambrose, Ambrose responds with one of his own. Harper hits him back and connects with a suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Harper sends Ambrose into the ropes, but Ambrose catches him with a neckbreaker out of nowhere. Rollins gets the tag, hitting Harper with a dropkick followed by a sidekick. Rollins works Harper over in the corner, hitting a running forearm. Rollins heads to the top and kicks Rowan off the apron. Harper clubs Rollins from behind then climbs to the middle turnbuckle. Harper works Rollins over in the corner then whips him to the opposite side, hitting a running midsection knww. Harper slingshots Rollins throat-first into the middle rope, creating one hell of a whiplash effect.

Wyatt screams for the tag and gets it, stomping Rollins on the sternum repeatedly. Wyatt pulls Rollins back in, drops a knee, then slaps on a rear-chinlock. Wyatt whips Rollins into the corner but runs into a boot during a splash attempt. Rollins climbs to the second-rope but jumps right into a goozle. Wyatt attacks Reigns with a running forearm, then hits him with SISTER ABIGAIL for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Wyatt Family (22:42)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: This was the match with the highest expectations and it lived up to them and then some. A flat out amazing match that didn’t let up the entire time and featured new moves (Harper’s suicide dive being the craziest) and awesome spots (Rollins going through the table). Reigns, as the last Shield member standing, looked like a superstar and had the crowd eating out of his hand. When he broke out of Sister Abigail I almost lost it and Wyatt’s facial expression made it even greater. WWE has made Roman Reigns look like the next big thing. The Shield’s teased break-up once again didn’t happen, but I’m cool with it. Either way watch this fucking match. I don’t know how anything else will measure up.

—–

After a couple of commercials, we go backstage where Renee Young catches up with Christian. Christian yells at her for bringing up how he’s lost every match heading into the Elimination Chamber. Christian says it won’t matter because people will only remember when he wins tonight. Christian says he’s desperate and dangerous and dares the EC participants to underestimate him.

—–

WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee makes her way out for the next match, bodyguard Tamina Snuka in tow. Lilian Garcia tries to announce her entrance but her mic cuts out. Lee grabs a different mic and a “CM PUNK!” chant already breaks out. Lee hypes up the fact she’s the longest-reigning Divas Champion of all-time. Lee says even though she doesn’t have competition she has to defend her title. She then mocks Naomi for her injury and asks for whomever her opponent is gonna be. “Somebody Call My Momma” brings out Cameron, who I guess has the shot now. Sony Live Viewer is starting to sputter again but I’m cool if that happens during this one. That made me sound sexist, sorry. Cameron throws her pom poms at Lee, and Lee laughs it off.

—–

Match #5: AJ Lee (c) [w/ Tamina Snuka] Vs. Cameron for the WWE Divas Championship

Cameron takes Lee down with a snapmare and covers for 1. Lee charges and Cameron rolls her up for another 1-count. Cameron mocks Lee by skipping. Cameron drops Lee and hits the split-legged legdrop for 2. Cameron hits the ropes and runs into a spin kick from Lee. Lee covers for 2 then hits a reverse neckbreaker for a 1-count. That only got a 1? Lee locks in a Dragon Sleeper of sorts to wear Cameron down. Cameron escapes but Lee grabs the hair and sends her down to the mat. Lee sends Cameron into the corner, skips, and misses the splash. Cameron rolls her up for 1, then mounts a comeback with a couple of ugly clotheslines. Cameron sort-of hits Lee with a dropkick and covers for the 1…2…kickout.

Cameron ducks a clothesline and catches Lee with a Thesz-ish press. Lee bails to the ropes and throws Cameron through the ropes and onto the floor. A “CM PUNK!” naturally breaks out. Lee grabs the pom poms and makes fun of Cameron’s entrance (still sexy, though). Lee throws the pom poms in the ring and Cameron pulls her off the apron. Snuka goes for a superkick but hits Lee super hard instead. Cameron rolls Lee into the ring and covers for the 1…2…Snuka puts her foot on the rope sort-of. Cameron tries to hit Snuka, but Snuka floors her with a clothesline and the ref calls for the bell.

Winner [via DQ]: Cameron (3:58); AJ Lee retains the WWE Divas Championship

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Any match that had to follow Shield/Wyatts was going to suffer, and suffer this one did. It also didn’t help that the two didn’t have much chemistry. Snuka accidentally hitting Lee with a superkick but still saving the belt was interesting though. I guess that leads to a WM XXX match. Maybe.

Post-Match: Wade Barrett calls the MN people “dummies” for breaking his podium, but says the good news is that he can now deliver even more bad news. Barrett brings up the WWE Network but has some BAD NEWS: they’re gonna be so overwhelmed they won’t be able to turn it off so kids will be expelled and people will lose their jobs (the crowd cheers). Barrett says people are gonna be so mesmerized by the WWE Network they won’t clean their houses and the government will condemn their homes, left homeless to fend on the streets.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: …The fuck?

—–

Santino Marella is playing with WWE action figures backstage. Emma comes up from behind and scares him. The Great Khali, El Torito, and Los Matadores all show up. They thank him for the invitation, and he runs away. The rest of them play with the action figures kill me.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Ugh.

—–

Batista makes his way out for the next match. Cole hypes Batista headlining WM XXX in April (ugh) and they recap the feud leading to this match. His opponent, Alberto Del Rio, makes his way out second…wearing a neck brace and using a crutch. He’s not set to wrestle. Del Rio is also using his old heel music FINALLY. Del Rio grabs a mic and says that because of Batista’s attack two weeks ago he won’t able to compete tonight (he wrestled after that, but that’s probably part of the thing). Del Rio then catches Batista with a cheap shot using the crutch. He takes off his clothes, revealing his wrestling attire. AWESOME. Del Rio attacks the knee with the crutch as Lawler says he did this to Bret Hart once. Del Rio rips off the neck brace and smiles. Del Rio with another crutch shot and backs up, yelling for the bell to be rung. The official checks on Batista and he says he’s ready.

—–

Match #6: Batista Vs. Alberto Del Rio

Batista tries to attack, drawing boos, but Del Rio rebounds and throws him into the steel post. A “BOO-TISTA” chant breaks out. Del Rio kicks Batista in the side of the head. Batista grabs the arm and applies a Cross Armbreaker as he’s draped on the second rope. Del Rio jumps back in and stomps Batista repeatedly. A “DANIEL BRYAN!” chant is up next. Del Rio applies an armbar. Batista breaks out with a series of forearms as the crowd boos. Del Rio holds on and delivers a double knee armbreaker to the roar of the MN crowd. Del Rio waits for Batista to get to his feet then charges, but goes shoulder-first into the ring post instead.

Del Rio fights back and hits a second-rope double stomp to the sternum. The audio cuts out but nothing was missed. Del Rio hits the running enziguri in the corner and covers for the 1…2…Batista grabs the bottom rope. Del Rio hits a running baseball slide, sending Batista to the floor. Del Rio throws Batista back in as a “WE WANT LESNAR!” chant dies down. Del Rio runs in and tags Del Rio with a SPEAR for the 1…2…kickout. Batista connects with a short-arm clothesline and goes for a slam but Del Rio escapes and connects with a Backstabber for the 1…2…kickout.

Del Rio goes for a top rope senton but Batista moves out of the way and follows up with a spinebuster. He revs up but the crowd hates him for it. Batista goes for the Batista Bomb but Del Rio escapes and clips the knee, then catches him with a superkick to the side of the head for the 1…2…kickout. Del Rio goes for the Cross Armbreaker but Batista sends him into the exposed turnbuckle, following up with the BATISTA BOMB for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Batista (7:08)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: The crowd turned on this quickly and rightly so; after Del Rio’s pre-match attack this match lost all of its intensity and was a droll paint by numbers match. This does nothing to get anyone excited about Batista headlining the biggest show of the year. Still time to back out, WWE.

Post-Match: Batista celebrates, favoring his left arm, to no crowd reaction whatsoever. He might actually be hurt…or he’s that much better of an actor now.

The All-Star Panel talk up the main event until we go to the ring and watch the Elimination Chamber as it slowly lowers to the ring. It’s got its own “80s sci-fi dystopia” theme.

—–

VIDEO: History of the Elimination Chamber.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Anyone else find it weird that Christian and Daniel Bryan are the only ones who’ve been interviewed about this match tonight? Seems like Orton should’ve gotten some pre-match comments in. Maybe it’ll happen during the introductions. They’ve got the time.

—–

John Cena is the first man out for the main event. Christian is second, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton third, and Daniel Bryan fourth. They all are placed into pods. The final two, Cesaro and Sheamus, will start the match.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Couldn’t pick two better people to start. HOSS FIGHT.

Winner and STILL World Heavyweight Champion [via Pinfall]: Randy Orton (37:33)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: This is the first Elimination Chamber match I’ve ever watched in full and I’ve gotta say this is one hell of an awesome gimmick WWE has going for themselves (except for the fact they don’t do blood anymore). Everyone looked great, from Cena down to Christian, and Sheamus had the spot of the match Brogue Kicking the shit out of the pod.  The Wyatts interfering and getting rid of Cena reignites that feud so I guess Cena/Wyatt is a done deal for April, and I’m totally okay with it. When it got down to Bryan/Orton I admittedly got super invested and when Bryan kicked out of the first RKO I got hopeful. But that was my mistake because obviously that shit wasn’t going to happen. They didn’t pull the trigger at a big PPV, why would they do it at this one? As a fan this leaves me once again tremendously disappointed and by the looks of the fans after the match I’m not alone. There’s still time to interject Bryan into the main event of WM XXX, and if WWE is smart about it they will do so or risk having the crowd turn on them during the main event of their biggest show of the year.

Post-Match: Orton poses with the belts as the crowd looks on with dead eyes. I don’t think WWE understands that’s not the right reaction. Thus concludes the PPV.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I’m right there with you, disappointed fans.

Overall Show Thoughts

Elimination Chamber is a three match show but each one delivered so well on both a wrestling and emotional level that they outweigh the negatives by a mile. Langston/Swagger was a great hoss fight and start to the event, The Shield/Wyatt Family match delivered and stole the entire damn show, and the Elimination Chamber had no dull moments and made all six participants look tremendous (Cesaro and Bryan especially). Unfortunately it ended with the “same old shit” of Orton winning and the threat of an Orton/Batista Wrestlemania main event but there’s still time for WWE to realize how fucking horrible that is and change it up. I really hope they do. All in all a great show that didn’t accomplish much and left fans with the threat of a match no one wants to see.

  • Best Match: The Shield Vs. The Wyatt Family
  • Worst Match: Batista Vs. Alberto Del Rio
  • Best Moment: Sheamus kicks through the Elimination Chamber pod.
  • Worst Moment: Daniel Bryan once again getting the rug pulled out from under him. “Wait and see” my asshole guys, I’m tired of it.

-WWE Signature/Main Event Intro-

—–

Sin Cara makes his way out for the opening contest as Tom Phillips welcomes the home audience. He does the full Cara entrance, including the trampoline over the top rope. He did it way better than the original Sin Cara. His partners, Los Matadores, make their way out next, El Torito in tow. Phillips and broadcast partner Byron Saxton bring up the fact this trio was in action on last week’s Main Event. Their opponents, The Shield, make their way out next through the crowd. The commentators hype the Shield/Wyatt Family match at Elimination Chamber, graphic and all. Roman Reigns is wearing a white shirt underneath his vest. That’s…random.

Match #1: Sin Cara & Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) [w/ El Torito Vs. The Shield (*WWE United States Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns)

Fernando and Ambrose start. Ambrose grabs a waistlock but Fernando escapes and slaps on a side headlock. Ambrose reverses into a hammerlock and Fernando reverses back into a side headlock. Fernando takes Ambrose down with a shoulderblock, ducks a clothesline, and hits a springboard back elbow for a 1-count. Diego tags in and connects with a dropkick to the mush. Diego chops Ambrose then whips him into the corner, following up with a monkey flip. Ambrose gets a knee to the gut and tags out to Rollins, who eats back to back armdrag takedowns. Cara tags in and gets backdropped to the apron. He catches Rollins with a kick and follows up with a flying armdrag from the top rope.

Diego tags back in and kicks Rollins in the gut. Fernando tags in and Los Matadores sort-of hit a Total Elimination for a 2-count. Fernando runs into a big boot then gets sent into the middle turnbuckle via STO. Reigns tags in and bowls over Fernando with a shoulderblock. Reigns slams Fernando to the mat and follows up with an elbowdrop for 2. Ambrose tags in and hits a Muta elbow for a 2-count. Ambrose catches Fernando with back to back right hands, backing him into the ropes. Ambrose works Fernando over then sends him into the corner, hitting a midsection shoulderblock. He holds him there as Rollins tags in. He peppers Fernando with forearms from the apron before tagging in. Rollins hammer throws Fernando into the corner then does it again in the opposite corner. Rollins stares down his prey as El Torito tries to rev the crowd up.

Fernando reverses a corner Irish whip and Rollins smashes into the corner Flair-style. Cara gets the hot tag and hits a springboard headbutt, followed by a springboard crossbody. Rollins reverses an Irish whip but eats a tilt-a-whirl headscissors followed by a tope suicida on the outside, sending Rollins into the announce table. Cara rolls Rollins in and heads to the top but Rollins hits him with an enziguri. Ambrose tags in, climbs to the second rope, and hits a super butterfly suplex. Reigns tags in and hits the running apron dropkick on Cara.

-Commercial Break-

Ambrose stomps Cara’s hand, then stomps the chest, covering for 2. Ambrose slaps on a rear-chinlock, wrestling Cara to his side. Cara gets to a vertical base, ducks a short-arm clothesline, and connects with a back handspring elbow. Rollins prevents a tag with a diving elbow, then follows up with the Three Amigos (!!!) for the 1…2…kickout. An “EDDIE!” chant naturally breaks out among some fans. Rollins drags Cara back to their corner and Reigns tags in. Reigns begs for Cara to get up then decks him with a right sending him back to the mat. Reigns slaps on a rear-chinlock of his own. Cara breaks out but eats a leaping clothesline and Reigns covers for the 1…2…kickout.

Ambrose tags in and peppers Cara with rapid-fire stomps followed by rights and lefts. Rollins tags back in and catches Cara with a right hand to the breadbasket. Rollins follows up with a back suplex and Cara gets up in the corner. Rollins catches Cara with a running forearm and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Now it’s Rollins’ turn to slap on a rear-chinlock. Cara gets to his feet but eats a kick. Cara surprises Rollins with a sunset flip for the 1…2…KICKOUT. Closer count than you’d expect. Reigns tags in and prevents the tag by sending a Matador down to the floor. Reigns throws Cara into the corner, but Cara fights out and hits a second-rope tornado DDT out of nowhere!

Ambrose tags in but so does Diego and it’s the latter with the offensive streak, including back to back midsection headbutts. Diego ducks a clothesline and hits a springboard crossbody followed by the headstand headscissors in the corner. Diego heads to the top and knocks Reigns off the apron. Ambrose rolls Diego up for the 1…2…kickout. Diego catches Ambrose with a reverse lung blower followed by a flying crossbody for the 1…2…Rollins breaks it up. Fernando sends Rollins out to the floor, Ambrose decks him, then Ambrose spills out to the floor. Torito catches Rollins with a flying splash. Ambrose grabs Torito and Diego awkwardly splashes him. Reigns catches Cara and Fernando with a double spear in the ring. Diego rolls back in but is picked up by Ambrose, who holds him up for Reigns to deck with the SUPERMAN PUNCH. Rollins tags in and hits the running curb stomp for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Shield (12:58 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A good showcase for The Shield heading into Elimination Chamber. Cara & Matadores may have been on jobber duty for the past few weeks but props to them for making their opponents look tremendous while also having some good moments of their own. This was meant as a way for The Shield to show they are just as dominant as The Wyatt Family by beating the same team, but The Wyatts had a much easier time in their victories so it didn’t really prove much to those paying close attention. Also, as usual, ALL OF THE HIGH FIVES for Reigns’ apron dropkick.

SMACKDOWN GRAPHIC: Sheamus will face Christian in the main event.

Aksana is already in the ring for the next match. Alicia Fox is at ringside to cheer her friend on. Her opponent, Cameron, makes her way out second. Naomi is nowhere to be found as she’s recovering from an eye injury. We cut to a video from I assume is Total Divas highlighting Cameron’s personality. This just makes me not ever wanna see her do anything ever again. We go back live where Aksana attacks Cameron when she tries to enter the ring. Cameron throws down her pom poms and charges the ring.

—–

Match #2: Cameron Vs. Aksana [w/ Alicia Fox]

Aksana throws Cameron to the mat via the hair as Phillips recaps the fact that Aksana injured Naomi a few weeks ago. Cameron is sent to the outside, covering her eye, and Aksana lays in the ring. Cameron runs back in and Aksana peppers her with elbows, following up with a choke against the middle rope. Aksana slaps on a rear-chinlock. They get to a vertical base and Aksana throws Cameron back down. Cameron dodges an elbow drop and a corner splash attempt, rolling Aksana up for 2. Cameron ducks a clothesline and takes Aksana down with a Thesz press, slamming Aksana’s head against the mat repeatedly. Cameron sends Aksana into the middle rope with a drop toehold then rolls out and chops her. Fox tries to attack but Cameron takes her out by sending Aksana into her. The action gets back in the ring and Cameron hits back to back clotheslines followed by a wheelbarrow bulldog. Cameron goes for the finish (I think) but Aksana rams her into the corner and follows up with a backbreaker. Aksana calls for the finish but Cameron blocks whatever was supposed to happen and rolls Aksana up with an inside cradle for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Cameron (3:14)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A good story behind the match (Cameron wanting revenge on Aksana for causing Naomi’s injury) but all in all this was empty calories and ugly to watch.

VIDEO: The brutal history of the Elimination Chamber. The ominous voice-over also helpfully lays out the rules of the EC match and highlights the six involved in this Sunday’s edition.

The podium rises and here comes Wade Barrett with some not so good news. Barrett says for once he’s not the only one in the arena who’s incredibly high, riffing on the legalization of weed in Colorado. However Barrett’s got some BAD NEWS: despite the Olympic training facility being in Colorado, the U.S. is tracking its lowest medal count in over two decades. Barrett concludes by saying no matter what gets legalized in Colorado, American athletes will always stink up the joint.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Wakka wakka.

Kofi Kingston makes his way out for the next (and I assume final) match of the show. Phillips says you can watch all the Kingston you want when the WWE Network launches Monday. Uh you’re supposed to sell people on the Network, guys. Kingston’s opponent, Curtis Axel, makes his way out second, his partner Ryback by his side. Phillips & Saxton hype the Rhodes/Goldust Vs. Axel/Ryback match that’ll happen during the Elimination Chamber kickoff special.

—–

Match #3: Kofi Kingston Vs. Curtis Axel [w/ Ryback]

Ryback distracts Kingston, allowing Axel to attack him from behind. Axel stomps Kingston down to the mat then sends him into the ropes, connecting with a back elbow (I think, I took my eyes off the match for a quick second). Axel sends Kingston to the corner, but Kingston scales to the middle turnbuckle and hits a missile dropkick. Kingston hits back to back chops followed by a dropkick and the leaping clothesline. Kingston revs up for the Boom Drop and connects with the move. Kingston signals for the finish, but Axel dodges Trouble in Paradise and escapes out to the floor to talk strategy with Ryback. Ryback climbs to the apron and he and Axel start getting into the ring…until Mark Henry makes his way out to even the odds. Ryback and Axel bail to the floor as Henry climbs to the apron.

-Commercial Break-

Kingston works Axel over in the corner with a series of kicks. Kingston keeps the kicks coming, sending Axel flipping backwards to the mat back to back. Kingston connects with more kicks and applies a wristlock but Axel grabs the hair and sends him to the mat. Kingston leapfrogs a running Axel twice, and hits a back elbow for the 1…kickout. A “RYBACK SUCKS!” chant breaks out as Kingston hits a series of rights in the corner. Axel gets his boot up during a splash attempt and clotheslines Kingston from behind. Axel catches Kingston with a running knee to the skull then covers for the 1…2…kickout. Axel slaps on a crossface sans arm grapevine. Kingston gets to his feet and fights his way out but gets sent to the corner. Kingston attempts another missile dropkick but Axel grabs the legs and sends him out to the floor with slingshot.

Ryback goes near the fallen Kingston, so Henry walks over to make sure nothing happens, daring Ryback to touch him. Axel rolls Kingston back into the ring and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Axel climbs to the middle rope but misses the forearm. Kingston dodges a corner splash and catches Axel with a kick from the apron. Kingston follows up with a springboard clothesline then launches into the pre-Boom Drop combo again. Axel ducks the clothesline portion but Kingston responds with a top rope flying crossbody for the 1…2…kickout. Axel fights back and hits a Saito Suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Kingston catches Axel with a clothesline, sending him to the floor. Kingston goes to take flight but Ryback trips him up.

Winner [via DQ]: Kofi Kingston (7:35 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A dull match with a crowd that was more into the two guys not in the contest. Ryback was especially getting some good heat. But yeah this was a snoozefest.

Post-Match: Ryback attacks Kingston until Henry tosses him out to the floor. Kingston then hits the duo with a senton on the outside. Kingston rolls back in and trash talks alongside Henry as we fade to logo.

‘WWE RAW’ 2/17/14 Results + Notes – Orton Vs. Sheamus, Cena Vs. Cesaro, Big E in Handicap Action

WWE Raw logo

Venue: Pepsi Center (Denver, CO)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

With one week to go until Elimination Chamber this “go-home” edition of RAW featured all six EC participants in singles action, with John Cena and Cesaro especially tearing the house down. Also on the show The Shield and The Wyatt Family had another staredown, IC Champ Big E Langston faced non-title handicap action, and Batista is also still here apparently.

Results and notes from the episode come courtesy of James Caldwell‘s much more interesting and informative recap/analysis over at PW Torch.

Match Results + Notes

1. Daniel Bryan defeated Christian via pinfall (11:11).

  • Pre-Match: Christian attacked Bryan after Kane announced the two would be facing one another, injuring Bryan’s shoulder by throwing him into the ring steps.
  • Post-Match: Kane came out and told Bryan he had one more match tonight…against him.

2. Daniel Bryan defeated Kane via DQ (3:55).

  • Notes: Kane viciously attacked Bryan’s hurt shoulder until the ref counted to five and DQed him.
  • Post-Match: Kane shrugged off the DQ after working over Bryan’s shoulder some more, selling doubt that Bryan will be 100% at the Elimination Chamber.

3. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae] defeated Santino Marella [w/ Emma] via pinfall (2:43).

  • Notes: Emma and Rae brawled on the floor, and Marella went to check on his protege. He went in for a kiss and Fandango dropkicked him through the ropes, leading to the victory.

4. Roman Reigns [w/ *WWE US Champion* Dean Ambrose Seth Rollins] defeated Mark Henry via pinfall with the SPEAR (2:49).

  • Post-Match: Rollins celebrated with Reigns while Ambrose was less than thrilled. Ambrose then attacked Henry as Reigns laughed at the pointlessness of it. More fuel for the breakup fire. The Wyatt Family then appeared via TitanTron and after a creepy Bray Wyatt promo the trio made their way down to the ring. They had a showdown with The Shield but once again backed off instead of attacking, continuing those mind games.

5. Jack Swagger [w/ Zeb Colter] defeated Kofi Kingston via submission with the PATRIOT LOCK (4:41).

  • Note: Lawler mentioned the “jealousy” brewing between Swagger and Cesaro, hinting at some friction to come.
  • Post-Match: Big E Langston made his way out for the next match, staring Swagger and Colter down.

6. Handicap Match (Non-Title): *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston defeated Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal when Langston pinned McIntyre with the BIG ENDING (4:17).

  • Notes: Colter had a live mic during the match, taunting Langston and the crowd for the duration of the contest. McIntyre was in standard wrestling trunks instead of his usual 3MB gear.
  • Post-Match: Langston mocked Colter on the mic then posed with his IC Championship to sell his match with Swagger at Elimination Chamber.

7. John Cena defeated Cesaro [w/ Zeb Colter] via pinfall with the ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT (19:08).

  • Note: According to everyone I’ve talked to/read on Twitter this is an early MOTY contender so if you’re a Hulu Plus person like me keep an eye out for tomorrow’s truncated RAW to see it.

8. The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, & Erick Rowan) defeated Sin Cara & Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) [w/ El Torito] when Wyatt pinned Cara with SISTER ABIGAIL (5:35).

9. Jey Uso [w/ Jimmy Uso] defeated Billy Gunn [w/ Road Dogg] via pinfall with a roll-up (3:22).

  • Post-Match: The Usos cleared the ring of The New Age Outlaws to hype the Tag Team Title match for Elimination Chamber.

10. Orton’s EC Gauntlet (Non-Title): Sheamus defeated *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton via DQ when The Shield interfered (14:55).

  • Post-Match: Cena, Sheamus, Bryan, Cesaro, Christian, Orton, The Wyatt Family, and The Shield all brawled to end the show and hard sell the two big matches at Sunday’s Elimination Chamber.

Segments + Notes

John Cena opened the show and was interrupted by Cesaro. They were soon interrupted by Sheamus, then Christian, then Randy OrtonKane came out and announced Cena/Cesaro for later tonight and Bryan/Christian for right now, leading into Christian attacking Bryan and the opening contest of the night.

Randy Orton met up with Triple H backstage, thanking him for everything The Authority has done. Orton started trashtalking Batista who showed up and called Orton the “ASS of the WWE” herdy her her. Orton walked off and in came Alberto Del Rio, complete with neck brace, who said he was going to break Batista’s arms. Batista shoved him and he and Triple H walked off as Del Rio sold the effects of a, erm, shove.

Goldust was shown playing with WWE action figures backstage along with Cody RhodesWade Barrett stopped by and delivered some “BAD NEWS” by kicking the playset over.

Titus O’Neil cut a promo on Darren Young as it was announced the two would face off at Elimination Chamber.

Tom Phillips welcomes the home audience as we pan the crowd. We cut to the entrance area where Sin Cara makes his entrance for the opening match. We cut to the announce table where Phillips is joined by Byron Saxton who’s making his Main Event debut. Cara’s partners, Los Matadores, make their way out second alongside El Torito. Their opponents, Bray Wyatt & The Wyatt Family, make their full entrance next. They either have a new “We’re Here” video or I just haven’t been paying attention the past few weeks.

Match #1: Sin Cara & Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) [w/ El Torito] Vs. The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, & Erick Rowan)

Matador 1 and Rowan start. Rowan clubs Matador 1 down immediately, following up with a headbutt. Apparently this is Diego so we’ll go with that. Diego flips over Rowan and connects with a dropkick to the side of the head. Fernando tags in and continues the assault, slapping on an armbar. Rowan goes for a clothesline but Fernando tries a sunset flip. Rowan shrugs it off then catches Fernando mid-crossbody, connecting with a fallaway slam. Harper tags in and drops the elbow on Fernando, following up with a scoop slam. Wyatt tags in and connects with a scoop slam, then tags into Rowan. Rowan slams Fernando once more and covers for 2. Rowan clenches his fists and crushes Fernando’s temples with it in a submission.

Fernando escapes but eats a back elbow to the mush. Harper is tagged in and hits a European uppercut, following up with back to back elbowdrops for a 2-count. Harper immediately slaps on a chinlock of sorts to continue wearing Fernando down. Fernando elbows out but Harper throws him to the mat with ease. Harper stomps Fernando and tags Wyatt in. Wyatt stomps at Fernando then sends him into the corner, peppering him with jabs. Wyatt rakes Fernando’s eyes across the top rope then tags Harper back in. Wyatt steps over Fernando before Harper picks him up by the chin. Fernando escapes with a jawbreaker and escapes a suplex, crawling under his legs and tagging in Cara.

Cara is a house of fire with a series of springboard moves and a tilt-a-whirl headscissors. Harper reverses an Irish whip and Cara responds with a back handspring elbow for a 2-count. Harper sends Cara into the corner, which sends him to the apron. Cara goes for a springboard move but Harper catches him with a big boot for the 1…2…kickout. Wyatt tags in as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Wyatt stomps Cara in the corner then poses Christ-like for the crowd. Wyatt sends Cara to the floor and tags Harper in. Harper goes to the outside and clubs Cara with some forearms before sending him back into the ring. Harper connects with a springboard senton (!!!) and covers for a 1-count. Harper sends Cara into the corner and tags in Wyatt. Wyatt connects with a running splash and covers Cara for a 1-count. Wyatt applies a chinlock to further wear Cara down. Cara escapes but Wyatt flattens him and tags into Harper. Harper commences with the Gator Roll then applies a headlock. Cara gets to his feet but eats a European uppercut that sends him into the corner. Cara gets his elbow up during a corner splash attempt and hits a tornado DDT off the second rope out of nowhere.

Rowan tags in but so does Diego, and it’s the latter who goes on the offensive. Diego hits a springboard strike and heads to the top, connecting with a senton for the 1…2…Harper breaks it up. Fernando comes in and sends Harper out to the floor. Torito goes to splash Harper but he catches him and throws him down, so Fernando takes him out with a splash. Wyatt grabs Fernando and throws him hard into the barricade. Wyatt turns to Torito and stalks him around the ring, hand out. Cara drops down from the apron to prevent anything. Rowan palms Cara to the apron and Cara kicks him, allowing Diego to roll him up for the 1…2…kickout. Cara tags in and Diego takes out Harper with a splash. Cara goes on the offensive as Wyatt gets the blind tag. Cara sends Rowan to the floor and Wyatt takes Cara out with a running flying elbow. Wyatt bends back in the corner, stares at Cara, then finishes him off with SISTER ABIGAIL for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Wyatt Family (10:41 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A warm-up for The Wyatt Family as they head to Elimination Chamber, but a fun one nonetheless and there were even a couple of hope spots for Cara & Los Matadores so they didn’t look like total dorks even though the finish was academic. Cara coming to the aid of Torito was strangely a nice moment as well. Good win for The Wyatts, good way to spend a few minutes watching some wrestling.

Post-Match: After a replay, we go back live where The Wyatt Family pose over the fallen Sin Cara and we hear tons of Elimination Chamber hype from the announcers.

VIDEO: Lita is going into the WWE Hall Of Fame.

—–

VIDEO: Michael Cole sits down with Triple H. Triple H says nice things about Lita going into the HOF, then announces that the WWE Network will be airing the entire WWE HOF ceremony on the WWE Network.

We cut back to the arena where Natalya makes her way out for the next contest. She poses against the barricade and a kid accidentally grabs her boob. Welp. Natalya runs around slapping hands, stopping to hug a fan who doesn’t accidentally cop a feel, and heads into the ring. She’s in action next!

  • Jon’s Thoughts: That kid played it off well but he looked a little horrified at what he had done. It beats that one dude who wrapped his arm around Natalya and kissed her. Maybe she should stop interacting with fans, fans are creepy and gross. Especially the guy writing this recap.

Natalya is still in the ring, awaiting her opponent…who turns out to be Aksana. Aksana is joined by Alicia Fox at the entrance stage, but Fox stays behind as Aksana makes her way to the ring. Weird.

—–

Match #2: Natalya Vs. Aksana

Aksana shoves Natalya and slaps her ass for some reason. Natalya responds with a side headlock takedown. Aksana whips Natalya into the ropes and is floored with a shoulderblock. Natalya cartwheels over Aksana then applies a waistlock. Natalya sweeps the legs and goes for the Sharpshooter but Aksana gets to the ropes before it can happen. Aksana bails to the apron and drops Natalya throat-first on the top rope. Aksana runs in and levels Natalya, covering for 2. Aksana drops back to back elbows as Phillips mentions the fact Aksana injured Naomi a few weeks back. Aksana applies an overhead hammerlock/chinlock combo. Natalya elbows out but runs into a knee to the midsection, sending her flipping to the mat.

Aksana brags a bit then covers for the 1…2…kickout. Aksana drives an elbow between the right shoulderblade then applies a chinlock. Aksana rakes the eyes a bit then reapplies the hold as the commentators hype the WWE Network. Natalya flips Aksana off, ducks a clothesline, and the two ladies collide in the center of the ring, both attempting a crossbody. They get to their feet and Natalya hits an uppercut, followed by a snap suplex. Natalya hits another snap suplex, followed by a snapmare and a dropkick to the back of the head for the 1…2…kickout. Aksana reverses a corner Irish whip but Natalya floats over a splash attempt. Aksana catches her with a back kick and follows up with a bulldog for the 1…2…kickout.

Natalya regroups in the corner and Aksana goes for a knee but Natalya moves and rolls her up for the 1…2…kickout. Aksana connects with a neckbreaker and covers once more for the 1…2…kickout. Aksana argues with the ref then picks Natalya up. Aksana goes for a slam but Natalya slides out and goes for the Sharpshooter. Aksana turns it into an inside cradle for the 1…2…kickout. Aksana kicks Natalya but Natalya sends her into the ropes. Natalya connects with a clothesline and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Aksana reverses an Irish whip but eats a kick. Aksana responds with a spinebuster and covers for the 1…2…kickout! Natalya is channeling her inner-SuperCena. Aksana crawls over and goes for her kick but Natalya grabs the foot and turns it into the SHARPSHOOTER, forcing Aksana to tap for the win!

Winner [via Submission]: Natalya (6:45)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A much better match than you think it was, trust me on that. Good stuff from both Divas, and unlike her Superstars matches Natalya actually got in real offense to go along with her “resiliency”. Refreshing after the past few weeks. Nothing bad to say here, folks.

Match #3: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Vs. Drew McIntyre [w/ Jinder Mahal] in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Langston sends McIntyre in the corner off a collar and elbow tie-up. McIntyre grabs a waistlock but Langston takes him down with a fireman’s carry slam followed by a shoulderblock. McIntyre hides under the bottom rope to stop the momentum. McIntyre charges at Langston and goes for a kick, but Langston catches him and flips him over the top rope and onto the floor. McIntyre jumps to the apron and Langston throws him back in. Langston whips McIntyre into the corner, dodges a float over, then hits a release overhead belly-to-belly suplex for a 2-count. Langston applies a wristlock and drives the elbow repeatedly into McIntyre’s arm. McIntyre kicks his way out and applies a headlock, taking Langston down with a shoulderblock when he’s sent into the ropes. McIntyre stomps Langston then hits the ropes. The two exchange leapfrogs and Langston takes him down with a shoulderblock for a 2-count.

McIntyre sends Langston into the middle turnbuckle then chokes him with his boot. McIntyre kicks Langston then rakes his eyes across the top rope. McIntyre connects with a series of right hands then slaps Langston across the face. Langston gets angry, throws McIntyre into the corner, and hits a series of rights to the midsection. Langston whips McIntyre into the opposite corner and hits a running shoulderblock into the midsection, then does it again and follows up with a back bodydrop. McIntyre bails to the apron and catches a running Langston with a big boot. McIntyre heads to the top and takes Langston out with a flying clothesline for the 1…2…kickout. McIntyre applies an armbar as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

McIntyre still has an armbar/wristlock applied as we return. Langston whips him off with an armdrag but misses a corner splash and McIntyre clotheslines him from behind for the 1…2…kickout. McIntyre stomps Langston repeatedly and catches him with a big boot. McIntyre reapplies the armbar. McIntyre turns it into a backpack sleeper when Langston gets to his feet, but Langston splashes him against the corner to break it. Langston gets a head of steam and runs right into a clothesline. McIntyre follows up with his flying big boot and covers for the 1…2…kickout. McIntyre tries again, this time only getting 1. McIntyre stomps the back of Langston’s head and slaps him repeatedly. McIntyre signals for the finish, but Langston blocks it and hits a stun gun suplex.

Langston starts revving himself up and catches McIntyre with back to back clotheslines followed by a release belly-to-belly suplex. Langston follows up with the running Warrior Splash. McIntyre tries to bail but Langston grabs him. The ref gets in the way and McIntyre catches Langston with another big boot for the 1…2…kickout! McIntyre goes for another move but Langston counters it with the BIG ENDING for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Big E Langston (8:36 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A solid hard-hitting match. McIntyre looked great, as did Langston who had the crowd in the palm of his hands. A solid week for Main Event wrestling-wise.

Post-Match: Jinder Mahal gets on the mic and challenges Langston to a match right now.

—–

Match #4: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Vs. Jinder Mahal [w/ Drew McIntyre] in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Mahal catches Langston with an elbow and clubs him with knee strikes and forearms. Langston ducks a clothesline and hits a running one of his own. Langston takes the straps down and hits Mahal with the BIG ENDING for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Big E Langston (0:36)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: We have just found the Steamboat/Savage of our era. Masterpiece.

Post-Match: Langston celebrates as we fade to logo.

Jon’s ‘WWE Superstars’ 1/30/14 Recap + Review – Natalya Vs. Summer Rae, Los Matadores Vs. 3MB For All Eternity

wwe superstars logo

Commentators: Tom Philips & Byron Saxton

WWE Superstars is on autopilot this week as Natalya faces Summer Rae (a match that happened 3 episodes) and Los Matadores face 3MB (a match that has probably already happened 30 times this week). But hey at least there’s a new commentator! That’s…something, right?

Match Results

  1. Natalya defeated Summer Rae via submission with the SHARPSHOOTER (4:06).
  2. Los Matadores [w/ El Torito] defeated 3MB [w/ Heath Slater] (Match Not Watched).

*****

-WWE Signature/Superstars Intro-

—–

We cut to the arena as Summer Rae makes her way out to her NXT (and I guess singles action) theme. We cut to the commentary table where Tom Phillips welcomes his new broadcast partner Byron Saxton. Awesome. “New Foundation” brings out her opponent, Natalya. She poses into the crowd and a dude wraps his arm around her and kisses her. Wrestling fans, man.

—–

Match #1: Natalya Vs. Summer Rae

Rae shoves Natalya, Natalya responds with a side headlock. Natalya takes Rae down but ends up eating a hip toss. Natalya kicks her away and slaps on another side headlock, taking her down to the mat. Rae escapes with a headscissors but Natalya kips up and out. Natalya grabs a waistlock and rolls her up for a 2-count. She goes for the Sharpshooter but Rae wiggles out and bails to the floor. Rae tries to bail but Natalya grabs her and rolls her back in. Natalya climbs to the apron and eats a dropkick. Rae pulls her in and covers for 2. Rae works Natalya’s left arm over, then wraps her legs around both arms bending them behind Natalya’s back. She turns it into a pinning combo which only nets a 2-count. They get to their feet and Rae runs into her awkwardly. Rae applies an armbar, shoves her away, then catches Natalya with a spin kick (that she falls over on), covering for another 2-count. Rae applies an armlock to wear down the hurt wing.

Rae transitions into a traditional armbar, bringing Natalya to her knees by wrenching back as she tries to get to her feet. Saxton hypes Rae based on her NXT run, even mentioning the “Beautiful Fierce Female” schtick. Natalya breaks out of the armbar and mounts a comeback with clotheslines and a snap suplex. Natalya connects with a dropkick on a seated Rae then goes for a slam but Rae slides out. Rae slaps her and Natalya responds with a roundhouse clothesline. Natalya finishes Rae off with the SHARPSHOOTER for the submission victory.

Winner [via Submission]: Natalya (4:06)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Short and unremarkable. I did enjoy the commentary though; Saxton is leagues ahead of Alex Riley. This match is overexposed at this point, especially if you watch NXT (which I expect all of you to do when the WWE Network launches).

‘WWE Royal Rumble 2014’ Results + Notes – New Tag Team Champs, Pittsburgh Gets Indifferently Rowdy

CREDIT = WWE.com

CREDIT = WWE.com

Date: January 26, 2014

Venue: CONSOL Energy Center (Pittsburgh, PA)

Commentators: Michael Cole, JBL, & Jerry Lawler

Last night WWE held its first PPV of the year, Royal Rumble, live from Pittsburgh and it’ll be remembered just as much for the crowd as it will be for the results, which you can check out below courtesy of Jason Powell‘s much more interesting and detailed recap/analysis over at ProWrestling.net.

1. Rumble Royal Kickoff: The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) defeated Cody Rhodes & Goldust (c) to win the WWE Tag Team Titles when Gunn pinned Rhodes with the FAMEASSER (6:30).

2. Bray Wyatt defeated Daniel Bryan via pinfall with SISTER ABIGAIL (21:30).

3. Brock Lesnar [w/ Paul Heyman] defeated The Big Show via pinfall with the F-5 (2:00).

  • Before the Match: Lesnar beat up Show with a whole host of chair shots before the bell even rang. The fact that the match happened anyway is a bit suspect.
  • Post-Match: Lesnar repeatedly walloped Show with more chairshots, think Rock/Mankind from ’99 but not to the head, until he got bored and left. Show then left on his two feet with minimal help from the trainer and refs, which was surprising.

4. Randy Orton (c) defeated John Cena via pinfall with the RKO to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (20:55).

  • The Finish: Cena seemed to have things in order until Bray Wyatt and The Wyatt Family showed up, causing a distraction that led to Orton’s victory.
  • Post-Match: The Wyatt Family attacked Cena some more before Bray finished him off with SISTER ABIGAIL.
  • Notes: The Pittsburgh crowd turned on this match completely, chanting for Daniel Bryan and eventually going into “This is Awful”.

4. Batista won the 2014 Royal Rumble, last eliminating Roman Reigns (55:10).

  • Order of Entry: CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Damien Sandow, Cody Rhodes, Kane, Alexander Rusev (making his main roster debut sans Lana), Jack Swagger, Kofi Kingston (who had two “near elimination” goof spots), Jimmy Uso, Goldust (who was eliminated by his own brother), Dean Ambrose, Dolph Ziggler (return from concussion), R-Truth, Kevin Nash, Roman Reigns (who ended up tying Kane’s record of 11 eliminations, including his Shield stablemates), The Great Khali, Sheamus (return from year-long injury), The Miz, Fandango, El Torito, Antonio Cesaro, Luke Harper, Jey Uso, JBL (quickly eliminated), Erick Rowan, Ryback, Alberto Del Rio, Batista, Big E Langston, Rey Mysterio (who was met uncharacteristically with boos since he wasn’t Daniel Bryan)
  • Post-Match: Batista celebrated and pointed to the WM XXX sign as the crowd mostly booed.
  • Notes: Once it was clear Daniel Bryan was not going to be in the Rumble the Pittsburgh crowd turned on this match and took turns chanting his name and booing. Batista was met with the same reaction while celebrating. Let’s see if WWE listens.

Word of advice to the WWE: listen to the fans. Pittsburgh isn’t an isolated incident, it’s just the loudest.

Jon’s ‘WWE Superstars’ 1/23/14 Recap + Review – Brie Bella Vs. Alicia Fox, Sin Cara & Los Matadores Vs. 3MB

wwe superstars logo

Commentators: Tom Phillips & Alex Riley

It’s six man tag team action this week on Superstars as Sin Cara teams up with Los Matadores to take on 3MB. Also in Divas action Brie Bella takes on Alicia Fox. Oh and a lot of RAW recaps. Those will happen as well.

Match Results

  1. Brie Bella [w/ Nikki Bella] defeated Alicia Fox [w/ Aksana] via pinfall with the sitout faceslam (4:29).
  2. Sin Cara & Los Matadores [w/ El Torito] defeated 3MB when Cara pinned Drew McIntyre with the SWANTON (6:36 shown).

*****

-WWE Signature/Superstars Intro-

—–

We go to the arena where “You Can Look (But You Can’t Touch)” brings out Brie Bella for the opening match. She’s accompanied by her sister Nikki Bella. We cut to the announce table where Tom Phillips and Alex Riley hypes up this Sunday’s Royal Rumble event. Bella’s opponent, Alicia Fox, makes her way out to the tune of “Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Party“. She’s accompanied to the ring by Aksana.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: These four ladies squared off in a tag team match the night before on Main Event. I’d like to pretend that this is the “continuation” of the feud but since this was taped first I doubt it. Good accidental continuity between the C and D-show though. That was a freebie.

—–

Match #1: Brie Bella [w/ Nikki Bella] Vs. Alicia Fox [w/ Aksana]

Bella slides under Fox’s legs at the start and applies a single-leg crab until Fox forces the break by grabbing the bottom rope. Nice. Bella follows up with the jumping snapmare. Fox angrily shoves her and Bella responds with a pair of forearms. Fox sends Bella out to the floor and Bella slaps her. Bella rolls back in and runs into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Fox covers for 2 then slams Bella’s face in the canvas. Fox connects with a Northern Lights Suplex, bridging for a 1-count. Fox connects with a forearm then takes her down with a normal snapmare. Fox applies a chinlock as Nikki tries to rev the crowd up. Bella breaks out and runs into a clothesline. Fox celebrates with Aksana then covers Bella for the 1…2…kickout. Riley says Aksana is looking for a man because that’s all women do.

Bella breaks out of another chinlock but Fox uses her size and rams her into the corner. Fox connects with a shoulderblock to the midsection then gets distracted by the ref. This allows Bella to get a kick in but her second-rope move ends in disaster (I guess) and Fox covers for the 1…2…kickout. That was odd. Bella breaks out of a double wristlock then mounts her comeback with a running clothesline followed by a pair of dropkicks. Fox bails out of the ring and Bella drags her back in. Bella hits a series of knee strikes followed by the jumping double knees and running faceplant. Bella climbs to the middle rope and Aksana distracts her long enough for Fox to sweep the legs and send her crashing to the mat. Fox covers for the 1…2…kickout. Nikki attacks Aksana on the outside and hits her with the Torture Rack Backbreaker. Meanwhile back in the ring Bella finishes Fox off with a running knee and the sitout faceslam for the 1…2…3.

Winner [via Pinfall]: Brie Bella (4:29)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Seeing The Bellas actually give a damn after a previous career full of whatever is fun to watch. Outside of a weird second-rope spot towards the end this was a competent and entertaining enough Divas match. The quality seems to be going way up. Too bad Superstars technically airs after Main Event because this would have wonderfully led into the Main Event tag team match. Maybe that’s how it was portrayed in the markets Superstars actually airs on TV in, but for this Hulu Plus user it was B coming before A.

We go back to the arena where “Ancient Spirit” plays Sin Cara out to the ring. “Ole Ole Ole” plays out his partners, Los Matadores, who do the whole bullfighter entrance with El Torito. Torito is wearing black. “Three Man Band” plays out their opponents, and mortal enemies of Los Matadores, 3MB.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: The purgatory of the neverending Los Matadores/3MB feud has sucked in Sin Cara. Poor guy.

—–

Match #2: Sin Cara & Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) [w/ El Torito] Vs. 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre)

Fernando and Slater start off. Fernando hits Slater with a headscissors at the beginning then follows up with a monkey flip out of the corner. Diego tags in and go for a double team move but Mahal and McIntyre pull him to safety on the outside…or so they think until Los Matadores hit the backup band with dual tope suicidas. Slater walks over and Cara hits him with a tope suicida as well. The three hooded faces celebrate in the ring as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Fernando has Mahal in an armbar as we return from the break. Mahal backs him into the corner and drives the knee into the gut. Fernando reverses an Irish whip then does a headstand-ish on the top turnbuckle before taking Mahal down with another armdrag takedown. Fernando takes out Slater on the apron but McIntyre clubs him down and tags in. McIntyre jump stomps Fernando repeatedly then connects with a snap suplex for the 1…2…kickout. McIntyre throws Fernando in the corner and works him over with rights and kicks. Mahal tags in and hits a kneedrop on Fernando after McIntyre kicks him for the 1…2…kickout. Mahal applies a chinlock then throws Fernando to the mat when he threatens to break out. Mahal drops the knee and chokes him a bit before tagging in Slater. Slater and Mahal connect with a double slingshot suplex. Slater floats over and covers for the 1…2…kickout.

Slater hits a series of quick jabs followed by the heel kick for the 1…2…kickout. McIntyre tags in and connects with a forearm. Fernando ducks a clothesline and rolls him up with a crucifix for the 1…2…kickout. McIntrye fights back with a clothesline then jaws at the crowd. Mahal tags in and connects with a snap butterfly suplex, floating over into a lateral press for the 1…2…kickout. Mahal slaps on a chinlock then hits a neckbreaker. Mahal knocks Diego off the apron and mocks Cara. He turns around and Fernando hits him with a Codebreaker.

McIntyre tags in but so does Cara, who hits him with a springboard headbutt followed by a springboard crossbody for the 1…2…kickout. Cara connects with a tilt-a-whirl headscissors and a back handspring elbow Tajiri-style for the 1…2…Mahal makes the save. Diego takes Mahal out, Slater takes him out, Cara then dumps Slater. Torito then scales to the top and takes out Mahal and Slater with a springboard splash. McIntyre goes for a suplex on the apron but Cara stops it and hits him with an enziguri sending him back in the ring. Cara climbs to the top and finishes McIntyre off with the SENTON for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Sin Cara & Los Matadores (6:36 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: If WWE still booked their PPVs the same way they did in the early-90s this totally would have been the opening to Summerslam or even a Wrestlemania. A fun and fluffy six-man tag team match that entertained and didn’t overstay its welcome; in fact it was a bit too short for my tastes. This concludes the too-short wrestling portion of Superstars. I guess Cena/Orton is gonna get the rest of the episode.

-WWE Signature/Main Event Intro-

We cut to the arena where “S.O.S.” brings Kofi Kingston out for the opening contest. Tom Phillips welcomes the home audience. We see a clip of Kingston beating Orton on RAW. Phillips is joined at the announce table by Alex Riley this week. Uh-oh. “Reborn” brings out Kingston’s opponent Curtis Axel.

—–

Match #1: Kofi Kingston Vs. Curtis Axel

Kingston backs Axel into the ropes, then Axel backs him into the corner. They jockey for position until Kingston slaps on a side headlock, taking him to the mat. Axel grabs the hair and whips Kingston into the ropes. Kingston hits him with a jumping strike and Axel bails to the corner. Phillips brings up the fact that Kingston technically should get a shot at the championship due to his win on Monday. Kingston grabs a waistlock but Axel escapes with a back elbow. Axel connects with a right to the ribs and a forearm across the back of the head. Kingston reverses an Irish whip, leapfrogs Axel twice, then hits a jumping back elbow and covers for a 1-count.

Kingston kicks at the hamstrings, catches a kick from Axel, then connects with a spin kick to the face. Kingston covers for a 2-count and Axel bails to the corner. Kingston eats a boot during a splash attempt, then gets floored with a running clothesline. Axel connects with a couple of forearms and stomps. Axel rolls to the outside to deliver a right hand then rolls back in to deliver a kick to the ribs. Axel whips Kingston hard into the corner, the force sending him crashing to the mat. A “KOFI!” chant breaks out among the Massachusetts crowd. Kingston hits the ropes and runs into a back elbow, Axel covering for a 2-count. Axel applies an armbar to Kingston to wear him down. Kingston strikes his way out then delivers a series of kicks followed by a standing dropkick. Kingston follows up with a clotheslining, sending Axel over the top and onto the floor. Kingston gets a running head start and goes for a baseball slide but Axel dodges and kicks him in the ribs. Axel whips Kingston towards the ring, but Kingston jumps through the middle and bottom rope then immediately hits Axel with a tope suicida. Kingston rolls Axel in and covers for 2. Kingston with a kick full force to the ribs. Axel reverses a corner Irish whip but Kingston escapes and goes for a kick. Axel catches it and drives Kingston to the mat with an elbow. Axel is now in control as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Axel has Kingston in an armbar once more as we return from the break. Axel rubs his forearm in Kingston’s face as we see a replay of what happened before the commercial break. Kingston breaks out with right hands, slides under Axel’s legs, misses a clothesline, then gets driven to the mat with an awkward back suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Axel delivers forearm after forearm to the back of the head then applies a chinlock. He quickly releases and steps on Kingston’s head. Kingston fights back from his knees but Axel peppers him with forearms to break the momentum. Axel whips Kingston into the ropes and connects with a dropkick, jawing with the crowd immediately after and smirking arrogantly.

Axel drops the knee on Kingston’s arm then delivers a backbreaker, covering for the 1…2…kickout. Axel immediately slaps on a rear-chinlock. Kingston escapes but is sent in the corner. He gets his boots up during a splash attempt but Axel throws him to the mat when he attempts a second rope move and Axel covers for the 1…2…kickout. Axel talks trash as he rakes the eyes with his boot. Axel reapplies a grounded chinlock, wrenching it in. Kingston gets to his feet but eats a knee. Axel whips Kingston into the corner, but Kingston jumps to the middle turnbuckle and connects with a missile dropkick. Both men are down.

Kingston catches Axel with the chops, followed by the dropkick and jumping clothesline. Kingston revs up and connects with the BOOM! DROP. Kingston signals for the finish but Axel ducks the kick and sends him into the corner. Kingston scales to the top turnbuckle and connects with a flying crossbody for the 1…2…kickout. Axel regains control and seats Kingston on the top turnbuckle. Axel connects with a massive right, sending Kingston crashing to the floor. Axel jumps to the outside, gets shoved into the ring post, then ducks the TROUBLE IN PARADISE and Kingston hits nothing but steel. Axel rolls him in and goes for the kill but Kingston surprises him with an inside cradle for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Kofi Kingston (12:09 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A good match, with Kingston continuing the momentum he gained from his big win on Monday. Is it just me or does it seem like he’s stepped up his game lately? He’s a lot more fun to watch than normal. Axel was competent as always and it looks like he’s back to doing Michael McGillicutty things just with a better name and actual merchandise.

Post-Match: Axel angrily charges at Kingston and gets backdropped out to the floor. Curtis Axel has been eliminated from the Royal Rumble. “Meat” brings out Ryback, in a vest with no shirt, who walks around the ring as Kingston prepares himself. Ryback completes his circle around the ring then just leaves without attacking anyone. Phillips mentions his recent Twitter rumblings. Kingston is confused as to what just happened.

—–

Phillips and Riley commentate over a RAW clip of Kingston beating Orton, and Orton’s post-match attack on John Cena Sr. Phillips says Sr. suffered a fractured orbital socket. They then segue into a clip from Michael Cole’s WWE.com sitdown with Triple H. Triple H says there will be an internal investigation due to Orton’s actions.

—–

Ancient Spirit” brings Sin Cara out for the next match. He sort-of does old Sin Cara’s entrance but he’s more laid back about it. He’s in action next.

Phillips announces Rhodes & Goldust will face The New Age Outlaws on Smackdown.

—–

We go back to the ring where Cara is awaiting his opponent…who turns out to be Damien Sandow. The crowd seems excited to see him. I used to live right next to Worcester, MA so I couldn’t be more proud of them for this. Sandow’s wearing his “I>U” shirt which is still wretchedly terrible. Why doesn’t the WWE want him to get merchandise money?

—–

Match #2: Sin Cara Vs. Damien Sandow

Sandow catches Cara with a midsection kick then sends him into the corner. Sandow stomps him down to the mat and chokes him with his boot. Cara gets whipped into the opposite corner but floats over and connects with a headscissors and a dropkick. Sandow rolls out to the floor and Cara catches him with a slingshot splash. Cara rolls Sandow back in but Sandow hot shots him into the top turnbuckle. Sandow hits a series of corner midsection shoulderblocks then chokes the fallen Cara with his boot once more. Sandow pulls him into the center of the ring, drops the forearm, and covers for 2. Sandow connects with the side-Russian Legsweep and follows up with the ELBOW OF DISDAIN for the 1…2…kickout. Sandow immediately slaps on a rear-chinlock to keep the offense going.

Cara gets to his feet and tries to battle out but Sandow hits him with a headbutt. Cara flips out of a suplex and sends Sandow into the middle turnbuckle via drop toehold. Cara connects with a hamstring kick and drives Sandow to the mat with a clothesline. Cara follows up with a springboard crossbody for the 1…2…kickout. Cara takes Sandow to the mat with a headscissors then chops him hard. Sandow reverses an Irish whip but Cara comes at him with a handspring elbow for the 1…2…kickout. Ryback makes his way back out and circles the ring as Cara climbs to the top rope. Cara misses the Swanton but catches Sandow with a dropkick as Ryback continues walking around. Sandow regains control and hits the YOU’RE WELCOME on Cara for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Damien Sandow (4:04)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A do nothing match but an entertaining one. New Sin Cara is boss, and it’s nice to see Sandow pick up a victory two days after once again being John Cena’s plaything. Ryback coming out to try and take attention away from the match was pretty funny too.

Post-Match: Sandow gets his hand raised as Ryback continues walking around the ring, making typing motions. Sandow looks at him bewildered.

A video plays hyping the WWE Network, showing quotes form a variety of different media outlets. None of the wrestling media outlets though because we don’t matter. We go to Phillips and Riley, who shill for it as we see a “Countdown” clock in the corner. We then go to a video recapping the CES 2014 announcement.

—–

Brad Maddox is stopped backstage by 3MBHeath Slater thanks him for giving them a 2 on 3 handicap match for later. Jinder Mahal hints that they’re going to drop their album this year. Maddox shuts them up, asking if they ever stop talking. Drew McIntyre says “sometimes” (HA!). Maddox says no one likes 3MB (I beg to differ) and their opponents, The Prime Time Players, are obnoxious as well. Maddox says the only reason they are all in the handicap match is because everyone in the back can have some precious few moments away from them. 3MB angrily walk off as Maddox goes back to his phone.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: This is the first time I’ve ever hated Brad Maddox. How dare he besmirch the name of 3MB that way? BOO. URNSURNURNSUUUUUURNS. At least 3MB got to talk though and McIntyre saying “sometimes” to Maddox’s question was pretty awesome.

We go to the announce table where Phillips and Riley talk about what just happened. Riley says he loves 3MB and jokes about playing the sax until “Bad News” Barrett‘s music hits saving us from the torture. Barrett’s podium ascends by the entrance stage and he bangs the gavel repeatedly. He asks for some decorum then talks about how we’re just two weeks away from the Royal Rumble match. However Barrett has some bad news: there will be no shocks or surprises this year because as soon as he gets into the ring there will be a mass exodus of superstars. Barrett then calls the crowd “livestock” from the zoo that were herded here. Barrett personally thanks the crowd for leaving their barn for the day just to see him. Barrett bangs the gavel and poses as his “#BNB” hashtag displays on the screen. Ryback then comes out to pose and walk around the ring some more.

Three Man Band” kicks up as 3MB make their way out for the next match, Ryback walking by them to the back. They are in action next!

Match #3: The Prime Time Players (Darren Young & Titus O’Neil) Vs. 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre) in a HANDICAP MATCH

Young and McIntyre start. Young backs McIntyre up into his own corner, allowing Mahal to tag in. Young slingshots him back in and Slater makes the blind tag. Mahal catches Young with a flying knee and Slater rolls in to cover for 2. Slater stomps Young repeatedly in the corner then tags McIntyre back in. McIntyre clubs Young in the back then stomps him in a different corner. McIntyre connects with a vertical suplex and covers for 1. McIntyre slaps on an armbar. Young connects with some rights and gets a back elbow during a corner splash attempt, but McIntyre comes back with the running one-legged dropkick. McIntyre covers for the 1…2…O’Neil breaks up the count. McIntyre argues with the ref, allowing Young to roll him up with a crucifix out of nowhere for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: The Prime Time Players (1:53)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Poor 3MB 😦

Post-Match: 3MB go to attack but PTP escape the ring just in the nick of time. Heath Slater gets on the mic and says that wasn’t fair at all. He calls Brad Maddox out to restart the match. Maddox makes his way out and admonishes them for yelling. Maddox says he’s not going to restart the match, but they were right it wasn’t fair. Maddox says they are now in a six-man tag team match against…Los Matadores and El Torito! The cycle begins anew! “Ole” plays as the trio do their elaborate entrance, Torito now wearing a white costume. Bulls are white?

Match #4: Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) & El Torito Vs. 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, & Drew McIntyre)

Matador 1 and McIntyre start. Matador 1 takes McIntyre down with a headscissors then follows up with a monkey flip out of the corner. Matador 2 (Diego) tags in and hits McIntyre with a dropkick. Diego connects with a sunset flip for 2, ducks a clothesline, and connects with a chop. Diego goes for a corner float over but McIntyre kicks him instead and covers for 2. Mahal tags in and connects with a flying kneedrop for 2. Slater tags in and stomps Diego. Slater makes with the right jabs then eats a chop. Diego gets caught with a heel kick and Slater covers for the 1…2…kickout. Mahal tags in and stomps Diego, following up with a neckbreaker for the 1…2…kickout. A “TAG THE BULL!” chant breaks out.

Mahal sends Diego to the mat and sends Fernando off the apron. Diego hits Mahal then tags Torito in. Torito hits a springboard headscissors followed by a springboard back elbow and hurricanrana. Torito goes to the top and McIntyre shoves him off. Los Matadores dump McIntyre and Slater out to the floor. Torito hits Mahal with another springboard splash then tags in one of the Matadores. He hits a top rope double fist then tags in the other one. They finish Mahal off with their finisher for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Los Matadores (4:03)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: POOR 3MB :(((((. Also poor El Torito while we’re at it; the dude has got skills and it made him a star in Mexico but here he’s just a dude in a bull costume who’s treated like a sideshow act because he can do cruiserweight moves. Disappointing on one level but I’m sure his bank account is perfectly okay with this.

Post-Match: Ryback interrupts the post-match celebration to walk around the ring some more. Close-up on his angry face as we fade out.

*****

Overall Show Thoughts

An entertaining Main Event this week. No match really stuck out but nothing was terrible and the story arc of Ryback coming out and stealing the spotlight at the end of every match and segment was interesting. And despite the fact that they were punked out three separate times I’m glad 3MB had something to do this time around, even interacting with Brad Maddox and, gasp, speaking. WWE has tweaked the formula of Main Event a bit recently and while it doesn’t necessarily make the show “must-see” it doesn’t feel like the waste of time it used to either. Also big props to Hulu Plus for airing this show without commercials for some reason. You won’t hear me complaining about that.

A video plays mixing Bray Wyatt‘s show-ending vignette last week with clips of Daniel Bryan in his Wyatt Family debut on Monday.

—–

Pyro goes off and we pan the crowd as Michael Cole welcomes the home audience. The Usos commence with their Siva Tau ritual and entrance to “So Close Now“. After a Wyatt Family jump cut, we go back to the ring where Luke Harper & Erick Rowan are already in the ring. Bray Wyatt is once again not at ringside. Not even his rocking chair could be arsed to show up.

—–

Match #1: The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) Vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan)

Harper and Jimmy start. Harper clubs Jimmy down then follows up with a European uppercut. Jimmy gets a kick in and ducks a clothesline, superkicking him in the gut. Jey tags in and hits a running dropkick, following up with an armbar. Jimmy tags back in but runs into an uppercut right. Rowan tags in and clubs Jimmy in the back. Rowan goes for a slam but Jimmy slides out and connects with a right. Rowan reverses an Irish whip and Jimmy goes for a sunset flip. Rowan doesn’t go down but he misses the legdrop. Jimmy goes for a follow-up but Rowan catapults him into the air and he splatters against the mat. Rowan lays Jimmy on the top turnbuckle and hits a series of forearms across the chest. Harper tags in, does the same, then stomps Jimmy when he falls to the mat.

Harper connects with a double chop followed by a right hand. Rowan tags back in and connects with a right to the midsection while Harper holds his arms. Jimmy fights back with rights and chops, then hits an enziguri to the temple. Harper quickly tags in and prevents the tag by knocking Jey off the apron. Harper then connects with a big boot on Jimmy and covers for the 1…2…kickout. This match continues after the break.

-Commercial Break-

Harper commences with the Gator Roll on Jimmy as we return from the break. Harper transitions into a side headlock as Jey tries to get the crowd rallying. It doesn’t work. Jimmy gets to his feet but gets floored with a back elbow and in comes Rowan. Rowan connects with a scoop slam then uses his fists to crush Jimmy’s head Crush-style. Jimmy escapes with a jawbreaker and gets his boot up during a splash attempt. Jimmy climbs to the top and hits Rowan with Whisper in the Wind, and now both men are down. Harper tags in but so does Jey, and Jey takes it to both Wyatt Family members with leaping clotheslines. Jey hits Harper with a back elbow and follows up with a superkick to the midsection and a right hand. Jey hits Harper with a corner forearm, then connects with a Samoan drop. Jey hits Harper with the running butt splash in the corner, then hits Rowan with a superkick knocking him off the apron. Jey turns around and Harper connects with a Michinoku Driver. Jimmy breaks it up and gets sent out to the floor. Jey sends Harper out to the floor then hits a flying tope, knocking both men out. Jey picks Harper up to put him back in the ring but Rowan hits him with a running forearm from behind. Jimmy splashes Rowan from off the apron, then eats a discus clothesline from Rowan as the ref counts both teams out.

Winners: Double Countout (7:02 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: One of those matches were at the end you just sorta shrug and go “alright”. I think these two teams need to take a break from one another.

Post-Match: Harper sends Jimmy flying into the ring steps then wakes Rowan up. The Wyatt Family throw Jimmy into the ring then go for the double team, but Jey runs in and superkicks Harper. Jey ducks a Rowan clothesline and pulls himself and Jimmy out of harms way. After another Wyatt Family jump cut Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan are now laying waste to The Usos in the aisle. Harper and Rowan join in on the fracas. Harper and Bryan send Jimmy into the ring then Bryan hits him with a BUSAIKU KNEE. Bryan makes Wyatt crazy faces off-camera as Cole describes them, then Wyatt takes Jey out with SISTER ABIGAIL. Bryan piles Jimmy on top of Jey and does the kneeling Jesus pose with Wyatt, Harper and Rowan standing in the background, before another Wyatt jump cut concludes the segment.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Weird that the camera didn’t focus on Bryan doing his crazy eye/tongue-wagging schtick; it lost a bit of oomph to have Cole just describe it (or maybe Bryan didn’t do any of that and just had Cole make it up). Interesting that Bryan got to do the Jesus pose with Bray at the end too. I guess they’re co-chiefs of the team? I’m not really digging this alliance so far but that was a cool ending visual.

We go backstage where Smackdown GM Vickie Guerrero is texting or looking at the internet or something on her cell phone. Maybe playing Snake. The sound of a throat clearing causes the camera to pan over, revealing WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton. Orton asks where Triple H & Stephanie are as he needs to speak with them right away. Guerrero says they aren’t here tonight, but Orton continues and says that he made it clear on Monday they needed to consult with him before putting him in any matches. Guerrero tries to tell him it’s best for business but Orton cuts her off and says he’s sick of hearing that. Orton says this Monday on RAW he’s going to give The Authority a piece of his mind because it’s what’s “best for Randy Orton”.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Orton was pretty good here conveying just how much of a petulant spoiled brat he is as World Champion. He’s pretty tolerable in short segments where he isn’t allowed to overexplain and recap his storyline.

MizTV w/ The Big Show

We go to the ring, where The Miz welcomes everyone to his talk segment. Miz says his guest tonight was involved in one of the must-see segments on Old School RAW and we go to the Show/Lesnar/Henry confrontation from Monday while Cole narrates. We go back live where Miz welcomes The Big Show to the ring. “Crank It Up” plays as Show jovially makes his way out.

Miz says when it comes to Brock Lesnar most people run in fear, but Show went after him instead. Miz asks what was going through his mind when he threw Lesnar like a ragdoll. Show says there is only so much crap a person can take before they reach their limit, and the truth is that he doesn’t like Brock Lesnar. Show says he didn’t like Lesnar when he was here before and he likes him even less now that he’s back. Show says everyone is afraid to confront Lesnar because everyone who does ends up like Mark Henry, but last Monday Lesnar was standing in the ring with a giant. Show then challenges Lesnar to a FIGHT. He waits for a second, nothing happens, then challenges him instead.

Instead of Lesnar out comes his advocate Paul Heyman. Heyman introduces himself then says Show isn’t looking to see him, he’s looking to fight his client BRAWWWWWK LESNAR. Heyman calls Lesnar the “Ultimate Fighter” in the WWE then asks if he’d like to fight him right here right now in Philly. Show rips his hoodie off and gets ready. Heyman then says Lesnar does not fight Show when Show wants him to. Heyman tells Show he gets to fight Lesnar when he says he gets to fight him. On behalf of Brock Lesnar, Heyman says that Show may fight him at Royal Rumble. Heyman says that just for the record if Show would like to pick a fight with Lesnar before the PPV, he assures him that Lesnar will not be a hard man to find. Heyman laughs as “Crank It Up” kicks back up.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Unless they’re going to destroy the ring again the idea of a Lesnar/Show match doesn’t really sell me on the Royal Rumble. Should be a decent enough match though, they had a good string of them a decade ago. Wait…yup, a decade ago. I’m old.

A vignette airs about the WWE Network announcement at the CES earlier this week.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: This times infinity. The WWE Network has all the makings of pro wrestling nirvana. I couldn’t be more excited.

619” plays as Rey Mysterio concludes his entrance. The Real Americans and Zeb Colter are ringside, Colter holding up one of his anti-immigrant signs right in his face. Mysterio’s partners, Sin Cara and Los Matadores, and The Real Americans’ partners, Curtis Axel & Ryback, have also already been introduced off-camera.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Oh man the face team is Zeb Colter’s nightmare fuel. Los Matadores have already sunk to jobber entrance status. I guess someone finally realized how terrible of a gimmick that is, Torito notwithstanding.

—–

Match #2: Rey Mysterio, Sin Cara, & Los Matadores (Fernando y Diego) Vs. Curtis Axel, Ryback, & The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) [w/ Zeb Colter]

One of the Matadores and Axel starts off. Matador 1 takes Axel down, but Axel responds with a series of kicks and a scoop slam. Axel rakes the eyes of Matador 1, then hits a shoulderblock. Matador 1 leapfrogs Axel, stops him for an “Ole”, then sends him face-first into the corner. Matador 1 follows up with a chop then whips him into the opposite corner. Axel dodges and Matador 1 head stands next to the top turnbuckle (not really on it) before hitting him with a headscissors takedown. Matador 2 tags in and connects with a kick, covering Axel for a 2-count. Axel backs Matador 2 in the corner and tags out to Cesaro. Cesaro floors Matador 2 with a European uppercut then follows up with a scoop slam. Matador 2 all of a sudden hits a spinning headscissors followed by a springboard back splash. Matador 1 tags in as does Axel, but the former gets the advantage. Cara then tags in and takes Axel down. Ryback tags in and eats back to back dropkicks. Mysterio tags in and goes for the 619 but Ryback bails out to the floor. Both teams stare one another down as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Ryback connects with a scoop slam on Cara as we return from the break but misses the follow-up splash. Cesaro tags in and prevents the tag with a deadlift gutwrench suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Cesaro slaps on a rear-chinlock as the crowd tries to cheer Cara on. Cara connects with a jawbreaker but Cesaro hangs onto the leg as Swagger tags in. Swagger takes Cara to the mat with a belly-to-belly suplex for the 1…2…kickout. Cara heads to the apron as Swagger yells at him to go home. Cara blocks a right and hits one of his own. Swagger grabs Cara’s leg and gets kicked off, tagging out Cesaro. Cesaro then goes after Cara, who hits him with a headscissors out of nowhere.

Swagger tags back in but Mysterio also gets the hot tag. Mysterio hits Swagger with a headscissors then connects with a top-rope seated splash for the 1…2…kickout. Swagger connects with a knee strike but eats boots during a Swagger Bomb attempt. Mysterio covers for the 1…2…Ryback breaks it up. Los Matadores hit Ryback with stereo suicidas, then Torito flattens Axel with a top rope splash of his own. Mysterio reverses a Patriot Lock and goes for a 619 but Swagger grabs the legs and connects with a spinebuster for the 1…2…Cara breaks it up. Cara and Cesaro clear one another from the ring. Mysterio counters a powerbomb with a hurricanrana, sending Swagger into the ropes. Mysterio follows up with the 619 followed by the top rope splash for the 1…2…3!

Winners [via Pinfall]: Rey Mysterio, Sin Cara, & Los Matadores (7:01 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: An entertaining mess of a match, with a cool 619 counter by Swagger towards the end. I had forgotten about Los Matadores so thanks to this episode for reminding me they are still kicking around.

We return from the break as Orton paces the ring. “I Need Five” brings out his opponent, Intercontinental Champion Big E Langston.

—–

Match #3: *WWE Intercontinental Champion* Big E Langston Vs. *WWE World Heavyweight Champion* Randy Orton in a NON-TITLE MATCH

Langston and Orton jockey for position, locked in a collar and elbow tie-up. Langston backs Orton into the corner and breaks clean. Orton grabs a side headlock but get sent into the ropes and flattened with a shoulderblock. Orton slides away from a pinfall attempt then rolls out to the ring to regroup himself. Orton slides back in and gets caught in a side headlock. Orton whips Langston into the ropes, leapfrogs him, but once again gets floored with a shoulderblock. Orton once again bails to the floor while the ref keeps Langston at bay. Orton steps back into the squared circle and connects with a kick to the midsection followed by a headbutt and a series of forearms that bring Langston to the mat. Orton peppers Langston with some jabs then arrogantly stands for a moment before going back to work. Orton connects with a European uppercut and follows up with a headbutt. Orton gets a full head of steam but gets flattened with yet another shoulderblock and Langston covers for a 2-count.

Langston connects with back to back right hands to the midsection then applies a wristlock, attacking the shoulder with forearms. Langston steps over and wrenches the arm behind Orton. Langston rams Orton into the corner and hits a series of shoulderblocks to the midsection until Orton finally gets a knee up to break the combo. Orton clobbers Langston with a forearm and series of headbutts. Langston starts shaking off the strikes then all of a sudden connects with a backbreaker. Langston picks Orton up and connects with a second backbreaker, covering for a 2-count. Orton fights back with forearms but gets sent into the corner off an Irish whip. Langston follows up with a running shoulderblock to the midsection. Orton escapes a slam attempt and once again bails out to the floor for a breather. Langston poses for the crowd then catches Orton attempting to sneak up from behind. Orton slides back out as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

We return from the break, Langston trapped in a rear-chinlock which turns into a side headlock. Langston fights out with elbows but runs right into a knee to the midsection and Orton covers for a 2-count. Orton once again slaps on a rear-chinlock as Cole once again goes nuts for the WWE Network. Feels like this was added in during post-production. Langston fights back but gets sent to the floor by Orton. Orton rams Langston head-first into the steel steps, picks him up, and does it again. Orton rolls Langston back into the ring and covers for the 1…2…kickout. Orton kneels over Langston, looks at the crowd, then slaps on a rear-chinlock.

Langston gets to his feet but gets sent to the corner. Langston gets an elbow up during a corner splash attempt then flattens Orton. Langston fires himself up and takes Orton down with back to back clotheslines followed by a belly-to-belly suplex. Langston gets a running start and connects with the Warrior Splash for the 1…2…kickout. Orton regroups and hits Langston with an over the back backbreaker. Langston bails to the apron so Orton goes for, and connects with, the Hanging DDT. Orton jokingly points to his hear for some crowd response then coils up. Langston fights off the RKO and splashes him in the corner. Langston goes to pick Orton up, but Orton bails back down to the corner. Langston goes to grab him and Orton thumbs him in the eye while the ref is distracted. Orton then follows up with the RKO and covers for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Randy Orton (11:03 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A little slow but overall a good match. Orton taking the cheap way out reinforces how much of a chickenshit his character is and it also helped protect Langston a little bit. Best of both worlds. Normally this would be grounds to whine about champions losing non-title matches but when it’s a secondary champion losing to the top champion it’s perfectly fine. The pecking order is there for a reason.

A Wyatt jumpcut brings us backstage to Bray Wyatt, Daniel Bryan, and The Wyatt Family standing in some nondescript backstage area. Wyatt says if he was to break one of the Usos bones would the other one feel it, then asks if they’re done playing hero and if they release they’re living this giant lie. Bryan then yells “LIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!” and says everything they’ve ever been told is a lie. Bryan says it makes him want to ram his head into a wall until he destroys something. Bryan then stares off into the distance and the jump cut concludes things.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Well that was…a thing. I dug Bryan’s intensity but I ended up laughing at this. Oof. Can we go back to August and do everything over?

“Cha Cha La La” concludes as Fandango and Summer Rae conclude their entrance. “Somebody Call My Momma” hits and out comes his opponent Xavier Woods, alongside The Funkadactyls. They do a little dance that concludes with the splits and out jumps R-Truth from behind. That was pretty awesome, actually. We go to a clip from Main Event that explains why this match is happening (Fandango cost Woods his tag team match by coming out and dancing). Truth joins the commentary booth and Cole acts super white.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I threw shade at The Funkadactyls for doing their same routine on Main Event but I take it back now because that new entrance was awesome. Not sure why Woods gets to keep Brodus Clay’s theme music though. Did Clay just forfeit it when he became a main event player? Also where did Clay and Tensai go, they were just brawling last we…you know this probably not the time to bring that up and my eyes are crossing anyway.

—–

Match #4: Xavier Woods [w/ The Funkadactyls & R-Truth] Vs. Fandango [w/ Summer Rae]

Fandango with the armdrag takedown to start. He celebrates by dancing, obviously. Woods grabs a side headlock, bringing him to the mat. Fandango whips him into the ropes but Woods ducks back to back clotheslines and connects with a tilt-a-whirl headscissors. Woods does some dancing and Fandango immediately attacks him and tosses him out to the floor. Fandango celebrates by, erm, dancing. Lots of dancing here. Hashtag dancing. Woods gets to the apron, connects with a shoulderblock to the midsection, them jumps in and rolls Fandango up for the 1…2…3!

Winner [via Pinfall]: Xavier Woods (1:24)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: I liked the part with the dancing.

Post-Match: Summer Rae gets in Woods’ face so The Funkadactyls trip her up and pull her out of the ring. Fandango attacks Woods, so R-Truth leaves the announce table and attacks. He and Woods take Fandango out with a double dropkick and Fandango falls to the floor. Rae checks on her man as the foursome celebrate by drinking fine wine by the campfire. Just kidding, they danced.

Tom Phillips is standing by backstage with The Usos, who are still in pain from earlier. Jey Uso angrily kicks a chair. Jimmy Uso says they understand what The Wyatts do, taking people out and making them scare, but The Usos stand up and fight back. That’s exactly what they’re gonna do on Monday. Jimmy Uso says they’re going to bring pain to Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan come Monday. The Usos exit to conclude the segment.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Intense promo from Jimmy Uso. Surprised WWE let them talk that never happens. I wouldn’t mind it if they did it more. Good hype for the match on Monday. Also high five to Tom Phillips moving on up in the WWE world!

RAW Rebound: Old School Raw, featuring Ric Flair and Jake “The Snake” Roberts.

  • Jon’s Thoughts: So much snake poop on Dean Ambrose. Almost feel bad for the guy.

Special Op” plays as The Shield make their way out for the main event. We see clips from Reigns beating Punk on Monday. We go back live where Roman Reigns has a live mic (oh no!). Reigns reminds us that Monday was Old School RAW, and subtly mocks Dean Ambrose by mentioning Roddy Piper and Jake Roberts. Reigns says none of that mattered because he beat Punk that night and become the BEST IN THE WOOOOOOORLD. Ambrose is next up and freaks out about snakes and how much he hates them. Ambrose says if the snake was here right now he would choke it to death. Seth Rollins steals the mic and calms him down. Rollins says tonight is not about the history of the WWE, it’s about the future of the WWE. Rollins says one thing he does know is that the future of the WWE does not involve the New Age Outlaws. Rollins says the NAO stuck their nose in Shield business so tonight it’ll be their pleasure to put them out of their misery. Rollins then says as for CM Punk…they’ll just do what they do every time they meet him in the ring: they’ll break him (Rollins puts his arm over Reigns while saying it). Rollins says they are the future of this company and no one can stop them, and concludes with “BELIEVE IN THE SHIELD!”

“Oh You Didn’t Know” brings out The New Age Outlaws, Road Dogg & Billy Gunn. This match is next!

  • Jon’s Thoughts: Good promo from The Shield that did a good job subtly teasing the breakup, with Reigns digging at Ambrose with the namedropping of the legends that humiliated him and Rollins choosing to buddy with Reigns when talking about beating up Punk. Ambrose was great as usual with his freak-out about being covered in a snake. What I wouldn’t give to somehow transport an in his prime Jake The Snake to now and have him feud with Ambrose. It’d be the best.

Main Event: CM Punk & The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) Vs. The Shield (*WWE U.S. Champion* Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, & Roman Reigns)

Punk and Ambrose start. Punk backs Ambrose into the corner and breaks clean. Ambrose yells then they lock up once more. Ambrose grabs a hammerlock then takes him down with a side headlock. Punk reverses into a headscissors but Punk kicks out of it and connects with a side headlock takedown of his own. Dogg tags in and connects with a right to the ribs. Dogg applies a hammerlock and rams him into the corner. Gunn tags in next and keeps the wristlock applied, twisting the arm. Ambrose escapes with a right and tags in Rollins. Rollins runs into an armdrag takedown. Gunn works the arm over and Dogg tags back in, making sure to do a little jiving before kicking the exposed arm. Punk tags in and does a little jiving of his own before hitting a top rope elbow on the arm. Rollins breaks out with a right hook and tags Ambrose in. Punk takes Ambrose down with a drop toehold then works the leg over. Punk goes for a kick but Ambrose ducks out and bails to the floor. Punk picks Rollins up for a GTS but he escapes. The New Age Outlaws then clear the ring of the two remaining Shield members. We are at a stalemate as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

Ambrose works Dogg over, raking his forearm across the face as we return from commercial. Dogg ducks a clothesline and does his shimmy combo of a series of rights and the forearm drop for a 2-count. I REMEMBER THAT. NOSTALGIA. Rollins gets the blind tag and hits Dogg with a springboard knee strike for the 1…2…Gunn breaks up the count. Reigns tags in and repeatedly stomps Dogg in the corner. Ambrose tags back in and stomps Dogg’s gut while Reigns holds the legs down. Ambrose connects with a straight right hand followed by a series of jabs and a little jive of his own to mock Dogg. Dogg catches Ambrose with a right, but Ambrose fights him off and hits the dropkick against the ropes. Rollins tags in and follows up with a dropkick of his own for the 1…2…kickout.

Rollins traps Dogg in a rear-chinlock to wear him down. Dogg gets to his feet and escapes with some elbows. Dogg goes for another right but Rollins ducks and sends Dogg face-first into the middle turnbuckle. Rollins pulls Dogg into the center of the ring for the 1…2…kickout. Rollins angrily stomps Dogg repeatedly then rips at his face. Ambrose tags in and peppers Dogg with cross forearms, then kicks the middle rope Dogg is laying on to send it into his throat. Ambrose hits a series of shoulderblocks inthe corner until Reigns tags in to floor him with a right hand. Reigns covers for the 1…2…kickout. Reigns immediately slaps on a rear-chinlock. Dogg breaks out and plants Reigns with a DDT. Both men are down.

Rollins tags in and clears Gunn from the apron. Punk ducks the cheapshot and Dogg sends Rollins flying with a backdrop. Punk gets the hot tag as Ambrose tags in, hitting a dropkick and a neckbreaker. Winners [via Pinfall]: The Shield (11:04 shown)

  • Jon’s Thoughts: A solid main event, even if The New Age Outlaws being involved killed my buzz at the beginning. To Road Dogg’s credit he sold The Shield’s offense beautifully and was excellent at being the babyface-in-peril. Billy Gunn was…whatever, which is surprising since he’s an NXT trainer now and for a long time had been the only non-HBK/HHH DX member still in shape. Weird. Reigns once again got the win for his team and honestly between that and his boasting of being the new Best in the World he could easily be the one staying heel. That’d be an interesting way to take it.

Post-Match: The Shield celebrate to close the show, with Reigns front and center. That concludes the episode.

Overall Show Thoughts

Outside of the Lesnar/Show announcement this was a lame-duck Smackdown. Every match with meat to it had a commercial break, killing what little momentum they had each damn time, and nothing really stuck out overall. Avoid the hell out of this and go spend your day doing something more constructive.
