Commentators: Tom Phillips & Byron Saxton

This week on Main Event the United States Champion Sheamus takes on Cesaro. If that alone doesn’t excite you about this show then I don’t know what will.

Match Results

  1. Dolph Ziggler defeated Damien Sandow via pinfall with the Zig Zag (4:11). [**]
  2. Emma defeated Alicia Fox via pinfall with a roll-up (2:13). [NR]
  3. Non-Title: *WWE U.S. Champion* Sheamus and Cesaro [w/ Paul Heyman] fought to a double countout (12:06 shown). [****]

News + Notes

  • The show opened with Sheamus interrupting a scheduled in-ring interview between Renee Young and Paul Heyman. Sheamus threatened to kick him in the face, but Heyman bailed out and Cesaro attacked Sheamus from behind, hitting a Neutralizer. Cesaro then teased a Cesaro Swing but Heyman talked him out of it.
  • Damien Sandow tried to talk but was interrupted by the music of Dolph Ziggler and insinuated that he was being “handcuffed”.
  • Before her match against EmmaAlicia Fox got on the mic and threw it at Emma’s face! After some more attacks the ref checked on Emma, and Emma decided to get the match going anyway.
  • After being rolled up by Emma, Alicia Fox tried to attack her once more but Emma got out of dodge. She then melted down some more, slapping around Tony Chimel while apologizing to him at the same time then going to Phillips and Saxton and singing “We Are Family” while holding both of them in a headlock. Fox then jumped on the announce table and demanded their money! Fox grabbed the script and shoved pieces of it in both Phillips and Saxton’s mouth, and yelled at the crowd some more.
  • Sheamus and Cesaro continued to brawl after the double countout, Cesaro hitting Sheamus with a chair. Sheamus fought back and hit a charging Cesaro with a Brogue Kick to stand tall to end the episode.

REVIEW

Notebook

  • Anyone else find it weird that MAIN EVENT has opening pyro but RAW doesn’t? I could’ve sworn the latter was the more important show.
  • I really liked how MAIN EVENT began with a segment hyping the, uhhhhh, main event of the show. I was already excited about this match but this was fun and got me even more pumped. I like this episode already.
  • All of my wrestling friends already have the WWE Network so these referral ads just depress me.
  • Damien Sandow’s Magneto phase is even less amusing this month than it was last month. I’m liking his new schtick that started this week though; at least it gives him a real personality again instead of just guy who loses and is mad about it.
  • Ziggler Vs. Sandow: A decent match to start off the show, made better by Sandow’s renewed vigor and energy. He seems like he’s actually liking what he’s doing now and it showed in his in-ring work as well as his mannerisms/trash talk. Someone wanting to be there wrestling goes a long way, and as a big Sandow fan this elated me. Outside of that, and Sandow using a standing leglock out of nowhere, this wasn’t all that memorable. I’m just happy Sandow is doing something. (**)
  • Shield/Evolution II should be a good match but it’s gonna take a lot for me to get interested in Payback, especially since there’s a much bigger WWE event, Money in the Bank, at the end of the same month.
  • Emma hasn’t translated well to WWE TV but I still love that entrance. Bubbles rule. I’m an adult.
  • Alicia Fox throwing a mic at Emma‘s face was the best. THE BEST. Alicia Fox for life.
  • Emma Vs. Alicia Fox: Fox was on the ball during this match, channeling her rage into some hard-hitting action including throwing Emma out to the floor via sidewalk backbreaker. And then all of that awesomeness was flattened by Emma getting the roll-up of doom for the victory. THINGS WERE GOING SO WELL. Ah hell, props to this match before that nonsense. (NR)
  • Fox’s post-match meltdown was the greatest thing in the history of WWE TV and no I’m not hyperbolizing. Okay yes I am, but this was amazing and ridiculous and amazingly ridiculous. Alicia Fox for President of Earth.
  • Sheamus proclaiming that his match against Cesaro was gonna be a fight instead of a match caused my eyes to roll into the back of my head. I hate that trope so much. Hate it more than looking in the mirror every day and seeing…this.
  • Looks like the fate of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will be decided on RAW due to Daniel Bryan’s surgery. Anything other than Bryan retaining will break my heart.
  • Sheamus Vs. Cesaro: I had high hopes for this match and not only were they met, they were surpassed as these two brutes just demolished each other for 12 exciting minutes. This had everything, from trading European uppercuts to Cesaro hitting a European from the goddamn floor, to Sheamus hitting a top-rope splash onto Cesaro on the floor, to the melee that resulted in a double countout. Words can’t do this match justice folks, it’s worth checking out and then some. I’d be cool with these two main-eventing every PPV from here to Wrestlemania 50. (****)

Overall

Between Alicia Fox‘s awesome meltdown to Sheamus and Cesaro legitimately having one of the best WWE matches of the year this was a tremendous Main Event. Not one boring minute to be had. Tremendous. Absolutely flat-out tremendous.
